The most reliable choice is an EPA-registered, skin-applied repellent whose label-listed protection time covers your planned exposure. DEET and picaridin are CDC-recommended options, but neither is a universal winner for every product, person, or setting. IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), and 2-undecanone can also be effective when they are in EPA-registered formulations.
Start by checking three label details: the EPA registration number, the active ingredient and concentration, and the stated protection time. Then account for heat, sweating, swimming, rain, clothing friction, and how long mosquitoes will be able to reach you. Use repellent as one layer of protection alongside clothing, screens, nets, and mosquito control around your home.

The short answer: choose by registration, duration, and conditions
A repellent is a product, not just an ingredient. Two products containing the same active ingredient can have different concentrations, formulations, and label directions. The practical selection process is:

Look for the EPA registration number on the package. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says registered skin-applied repellents are evaluated for safety and effectiveness when used according to their labels.
- Identify the active ingredient and concentration. CDC-listed options include DEET, picaridin, IR3535, OLE, PMD, and 2-undecanone.
- Match the label protection time to the outing. A short evening walk, a sweaty hike, and an afternoon of swimming create different demands.
- Follow the label during use. Reapply only as directed; more frequent application is not automatically safer or more effective.
There is no evidence establishing one ingredient as the best choice in every current retail formulation and field condition. A registered product used correctly is a more defensible choice than an unregistered product making broad “natural” or “chemical-free” claims.

What EPA registration tells you
EPA registration is a useful screening step because the agency evaluates registered pesticide products for safety and effectiveness when used as directed. Find the registration number on the product label rather than relying on a marketing phrase such as “plant based,” “all natural,” or “clinically tested.”
Some products are exempt from EPA registration. EPA notes that exempt products have not necessarily been evaluated for effectiveness, and CDC says the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents is unknown. That does not prove every exempt product fails; it means you do not have the same government evaluation of the product’s mosquito-repellent claim.
EPA’s online product finder can be filtered by active ingredient and protection time. Its underlying database was last updated in June 2019, so use the live package label and current registration information for product-specific verification. Do not assume that a listing, an old review, or a retailer description is current.

DEET, picaridin, and other active ingredients
| Active ingredient | What the official guidance establishes | How to compare products | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| DEET | CDC-recommended. EPA reports registered direct-to-skin formulations from 5% to 99%, with roughly 2 to 12 hours of mosquito repellency depending on percentage. | Read the specific formulation’s label protection time. Concentration and product formulation matter. | The 2–12-hour range is broad and is not a guarantee for any particular product. Heat, activity, perspiration, water, and rubbing can shorten protection. |
| Picaridin | CDC-recommended and listed by EPA as a registered skin-applied active ingredient. It is also called KBR 3023 or icaridin outside the United States. | Compare the registration, concentration, and label duration of the particular product. | Do not assume every picaridin product lasts the same length of time or that one concentration works identically in every setting. |
| IR3535 | CDC-listed as an active ingredient in recommended EPA-registered repellents. | Use the label’s protection time and application directions. | No universal duration or head-to-head ranking is established by the official guidance. |
| Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) and para-menthane-diol (PMD) | CDC-listed options when used in EPA-registered formulations. | Confirm that the product is a formulated, EPA-registered repellent and follow its age and duration instructions. | CDC advises not using OLE or PMD products on children younger than three. Pure, unformulated lemon eucalyptus essential oil is not the same as a validated repellent. |
| 2-undecanone | CDC-listed as an active ingredient in recommended EPA-registered repellents. | Rely on the product’s registration and label duration. | Product-specific protection time must be checked; a general promise cannot be inferred from the ingredient name. |
DEET: the widest documented concentration range
EPA reports registered direct-to-skin DEET products at concentrations from 5% through 99%. Its published information describes approximately 2 to 12 hours of mosquito repellency depending on the percentage. That figure is a broad agency-reported range, not a promise that a 30%, 50%, or 99% product will protect you for a specific number of hours.
For a particular DEET product, the package label is the controlling source. A lower concentration may be appropriate for a short outing; a longer exposure may call for a formulation with a longer label-listed duration. Regardless of concentration, sweat, rain, swimming, and rubbing can remove repellent sooner.
Picaridin: compare the formulation, not just the name
Picaridin is a CDC-recommended ingredient and an EPA-registered skin-repellent active ingredient. Outside the United States it may be labeled icaridin or KBR 3023. Those names refer to the ingredient, not to one standardized worldwide formulation.

These ingredients are legitimate options when they appear in recommended EPA-registered repellents. The label remains central because concentration, formulation, and testing conditions determine the protection claim.
OLE and PMD require special care in product identification. A formulated, EPA-registered repellent containing one of these ingredients is not interchangeable with a bottle of pure essential oil. CDC does not recommend pure oil of lemon eucalyptus as a repellent, and it advises against OLE or PMD products for children under three.
How long will mosquito repellent last?
Protection time is product- and circumstance-dependent. The number printed on the label is the best estimate for that formulation under its testing conditions; it is not a stopwatch that overrides what happens outdoors.
Use the outing length as your first filter
| Planned exposure | Selection approach | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Brief errand or short walk | Choose a registered product whose label duration clearly exceeds the time outside. | Apply evenly to exposed skin and avoid rubbing it away with clothing or equipment. |
| Several-hour evening event | Prefer a product with a label duration that covers the whole event, allowing for conditions that reduce protection. | Heat, perspiration, and repeated contact with chairs, towels, or gear can shorten the practical interval. |
| Hiking, running, or other strenuous activity | Use the label as a baseline but plan for conditions that may require label-permitted reapplication. | Sweat, friction, and wiping your face or neck can remove repellent. |
| Swimming, heavy rain, or water exposure | Read whether and when the label permits reapplication after water exposure. | Do not invent an interval; follow the product’s directions. |
| Overnight or repeated outdoor exposure | Combine topical repellent with long sleeves, pants, netting, and other barriers. | Topical protection alone may not cover every period or body area. |
CDC’s Yellow Book gives a general warning that products with less than 10% active ingredient may provide limited protection, often about one to two hours. That statement is not a formulation-specific promise, so use it as a reason to read the label rather than as a substitute for the label.

Application: a label-first procedure
- Read the entire label before opening the container. Note approved body areas, maximum frequency, age restrictions, water instructions, and first-aid information.
- Apply sunscreen first. CDC advises sunscreen before repellent, with repellent applied second.
- Apply only to exposed skin and clothing as directed. Do not apply repellent under clothing. Avoid cuts, irritated skin, and eyes.
- For the face, put repellent on your hands first. Adults should apply it to their own hands and then spread it onto a child’s face, avoiding the eyes and mouth. Do not spray directly onto a child’s face.
- Use enough for an even layer, not a soaking layer. More product does not automatically provide longer protection.
- Reapply only when the label allows it. Water, perspiration, and rubbing may affect the interval, but the label determines the permitted response.
- Wash treated skin after coming indoors. Follow the label’s cleanup directions, and wash treated clothing before wearing it again when the label calls for laundering.
- Store the container safely. Keep it away from children, food, heat, and flames when the label warns of flammability.
EPA’s safety guidance states: “Always follow the product label instructions.” That instruction applies even when an online post, a friend, or a different product suggests another routine.
Children and age-specific limits
Children need an adult-controlled application routine. Keep the container in an adult’s hands, apply to your own hands before a child’s face, and prevent children from handling or licking treated skin.
EPA states that DEET has no age restriction, but the product label still controls how it may be used. “No age restriction” does not mean unlimited application or permission to ignore directions.
Recommended Free Tools
CDC advises against OLE and PMD products for children younger than three. Choose a different CDC-listed option or rely on physical barriers for that age group, following pediatric and product-label guidance.
When “natural” or device-based claims are not enough
Unregistered natural products
Natural origin does not establish effectiveness. Some unregistered products have not been evaluated by EPA, and CDC describes the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents as unknown. If a product lacks an EPA registration number, you cannot use that number as a government-verified shortcut to its performance.
Pure essential oils
Pure oil of lemon eucalyptus is not the same as an EPA-registered OLE or PMD formulation. Do not substitute an essential-oil bottle for a tested repellent product, especially when the package does not provide an EPA registration number and clear directions.

Clip-ons and spatial repellents
EPA treats spatial and clip-on products as separate categories with label-specific limitations such as coverage area and wind. A device designed for a patio or a small zone should not automatically be assumed to protect a moving person across a large area. Check the label for the covered space, placement, operating conditions, and any restrictions.
Sound-wave devices
EPA says sound-wave mosquito devices are not registered and that it has no safety or effectiveness data for them. They should not replace a proven topical repellent or physical barrier.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Layer topical repellent with physical and environmental protection
CDC describes repellent as one part of mosquito-bite prevention. Add barriers when exposure is long, intense, or difficult to predict:
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when practical.
- Use screens on windows and doors and repair gaps that let mosquitoes indoors.
- Use bed nets where screening is unavailable or sleeping areas are exposed.
- Consider permethrin-treated clothing or gear for the items and situations covered by the product label.
- Never apply permethrin products directly to skin. They are intended for clothing or gear according to their labels.
- Remove or empty standing water around the home, including containers that collect rain.
- Keep outdoor living areas managed so mosquitoes have fewer breeding sites and hiding places.
Layering reduces the amount of work any single product must do. It also protects areas that cannot be treated with skin repellent, such as covered skin and sleeping spaces.
A practical decision framework
If you want the simplest defensible choice
Pick an EPA-registered DEET or picaridin product whose label protection time exceeds your planned exposure. Use the directions exactly, then add clothing or screens if conditions are severe.

If children will use the repellent
Check the age directions before purchase. An adult should control application, and OLE or PMD should not be used on children under three according to CDC guidance.
If the outing involves sweat or water
Choose a label duration that leaves margin for the conditions, carry the product if the label permits reapplication, and use clothing as a second barrier. Do not create your own reapplication schedule.
If you are choosing between two products with the same ingredient
Compare EPA registration, concentration, label protection time, approved application areas, water instructions, and package directions. The ingredient name alone does not resolve the choice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshooting common failures
You still get bites soon after applying
- Check whether every exposed area was covered, including ankles, wrists, neck, and the tops of feet.
- Review whether sweat, swimming, rain, towels, or clothing removed the product.
- Confirm that the product is EPA-registered and within its expiration or storage guidance.
- Read the label before reapplying; do not exceed its maximum frequency.
- Add long clothing, netting, or screens rather than simply applying more product.
The product seems ineffective in a yard or patio
- Check whether the device or spatial product’s labeled coverage matches the area and wind conditions.
- Do not rely on sound-wave devices; EPA reports no safety or effectiveness data for them.
- Reduce standing water and improve screens or barriers around the home.
You cannot find a protection-time claim
Treat the missing information as a comparison disadvantage. Look for a different EPA-registered product with a clear label duration, or contact the manufacturer using the contact information on the package. Do not infer duration from the ingredient name or concentration alone.
What to check before buying
- EPA registration number is printed on the label.
- Active ingredient and concentration are clearly identified.
- Label protection time fits the planned exposure.
- Age directions fit everyone who will use it.
- Application areas, water exposure, and reapplication limits are understandable.
- The package is intact and the product has been stored as directed.
- You have a plan for clothing, screens, nets, or other barriers if conditions change.
Bottom line
An effective mosquito-repellent choice is an EPA-registered product matched to the outing, not a universally superior ingredient. DEET and picaridin are the most straightforward starting points because CDC recommends them, while IR3535, registered OLE or PMD, and 2-undecanone are additional options. Let the label’s protection time, age directions, and application limits decide among products, and strengthen topical protection with clothing, screens, nets, and mosquito-source control.
