How to Choose an Eco-Friendly Island Destination Without Greenwashing

To choose an eco-friendly island destination without being misled by greenwashing, check exactly what a sustainability claim covers, who verified it, what evidence was assessed, and when the credential expires. A hotel’s certificate does not make an entire island sustainable, and an award, pledge, self-assessment, and independent certification are not interchangeable.

Start by checking what the label covers

Identify the entity named on the certificate or award: an island-wide destination, a hotel, a tour operator, an attraction, or another organization. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) maintains separate standards for destinations, hotels, tour operators, meetings and events, and attractions. A credential for one property or business does not establish sustainability across the island. GSTC explains its standards and terminology.

Look for the precise covered area and entity, not just a destination name used in marketing. An island may contain certified businesses without holding a destination credential; conversely, a destination-level credential does not automatically certify every hotel or activity provider there.

Tell certification apart from pledges and recognition

GSTC defines certification as a voluntary assessment by an independent third party through an audit. GSTC accredits certification bodies; it does not directly certify tourism products or services. Ask which body performed the assessment and whether it is credible for the scheme in question.

  • Leak-Proof Straw Lid for Easy Sipping: Designed with a secure straw lid for convenient one-hand drinking on the go. The leak-proof design helps prevent spills in backpacks, gym bags, lunch bags, or car cup holders, making it ideal for school, office, travel, and daily hydration.
  • Triple-Wall Vacuum Insulation: Made with Triple-Wall stainless steel vacuum insulation to help keep drinks cold for hours. Great for water, iced drinks, sports drinks, and everyday beverages during workouts, commuting, outdoor activities, or long workdays.
  • Compact 18 oz Size for Daily Carry: The 18 oz capacity is lightweight, portable, and easy to carry without feeling bulky. Perfect for women, men, commuters, and anyone who wants a smaller insulated water bottle for everyday use.
  • Built with reusable stainless steel for long-lasting daily use and a BPA-free lid for safe drinking. The durable metal body helps reduce disposable plastic bottle waste while offering a clean, modern look for gym, office, travel and outdoor use.
  • Carry Loop & Wide Mouth Design: The built-in carry loop makes it easy to grab and go, while the wide mouth opening allows simple filling, adding ice cubes, and cleaning. A practical reusable water bottle for gym, hiking, camping, school, office, travel, and outdoor use.
  • Certification: an entity has undergone an assessment against a defined standard by a third party. Check the assessor and the certification’s scope and validity.
  • Standard recognition: GSTC recognition indicates that a standard has been checked for alignment with minimum sustainability elements. It does not by itself establish that a certification process is reliable. GSTC says, “GSTC recognition does not ensure the certification process is reliable, only that the set of standards used to certify includes the minimum elements to ensure sustainability.”
  • Self-assessment: completing GSTC’s destination self-assessment tool is guidance for improvement, not certification or official approval. GSTC describes the tool’s purpose.
  • Award or pledge: these may signal recognition or intent, but do not assume they are equivalent to third-party certification. Check the scheme’s stated criteria and verification process.

GSTC’s recognized-standards inventory dated 31 December 2024 shows that standards differ by owner, scope, geography, version, and recognition date. It is not a live registry of currently certified destinations, and recognition of a standard does not prove current performance. See the dated inventory.

Check the evidence, date, and renewal terms

A persuasive claim should let you find the criteria used, the assessment method, the assessor, the award or certification date, its validity period, and any public progress reporting. If those details are missing, the badge alone tells you little about how thoroughly the destination was assessed or whether its status is current.

Validity rules vary by program. For example, Green Destinations’ 2023.2 program document says applicants report against 75 mandatory criteria before technical checking and independent assessment. It gives an Award a two-year validity and Certification a three-year validity. Those figures describe that program document, not every scheme; check current program rules and the specific destination’s status before relying on them. Read the Green Destinations 2023.2 program document.

Green Destinations’ collection distinguishes GSTC-certified destinations, awarded destinations, and white-label destinations. Do not flatten those categories into “certified,” and verify a specific destination’s current status rather than assuming the collection or an older announcement establishes it. See the destination collection.

Look beyond nature protection to the full set of impacts

GSTC organizes its destination standard around four areas: sustainable management, socioeconomic impacts, cultural impacts, and environmental impacts. Criteria are adapted to local context. A destination’s claim is more informative when its evidence covers residents’ well-being and livelihoods, cultural impacts, and environmental management alongside governance and planning—not only beaches, wildlife, or conservation messaging.

Island-specific questions can make the evidence more concrete: how does the destination manage visitor pressure, infrastructure, water and other resource use, environmental impacts, and residents’ concerns? Look for documented outcomes and improvement actions, not only broad promises. A credible assessment can acknowledge unresolved problems as well as strengths.

Use assessments as diagnostics, not as rankings

GSTC’s Phuket, Thailand, assessment illustrates why a single green label or headline score can hide trade-offs. The assessment period ran from October 2024 to September 2025 and included desktop analysis followed by a five-day onsite visit with interviews involving authorities and stakeholders. GSTC reported relatively strong performance in sustainable management, socioeconomic sustainability, and cultural sustainability, alongside significant environmental challenges. This was an assessment, not evidence that Phuket holds a destination certification. Read the GSTC Phuket assessment summary.

The same summary describes Phuket as having received over 10 million international visitors in peak years before the pandemic. That is historical context, not a current annual visitor count. The assessment is useful as an example of examining several sustainability dimensions together, not as a basis for ranking Phuket against other islands.

Sentosa Development Corporation says Sentosa received a GSTC-D certificate in 2022 and describes a whole-of-island approach. That announcement does not establish that the certificate remains valid today. Before describing any destination as currently certified, check a current certification register for the covered entity, scheme, and expiry date. See Sentosa Development Corporation’s sustainability page.

Compare destinations on the same questions

There is no supported cross-island ranking in these sources, and destinations’ labels are not automatically comparable. Compare the details rather than the badge:

  1. Scope: Is the credential for the whole destination, a defined area, or an individual business?
  2. Standard: Which scheme and standard version were used, and what impacts do they cover?
  3. Verification: Who assessed the claim, and was it an independent third-party audit?
  4. Recency: When was the assessment or award made, and when does it expire or require renewal?
  5. Evidence: Can you inspect findings, outcome data, and improvement actions across management, socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental impacts?
  6. Local trade-offs: Does the destination address resource use, infrastructure, environmental pressures, visitor management, and resident well-being?
  7. Separate providers: Do the hotel and tour operators you plan to use have their own verifiable credentials, rather than relying on the destination’s label?

Only compare like with like where the assessment scope, criteria, and standard version are clear. A certificate based on one scheme or boundary is not a universal sustainability score.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What exact entity and area does this claim cover?
  • What is the name and version of the standard, and where can I read its criteria?
  • Who verified the claim, and what assessment method did they use?
  • When was the assessment completed, and when does the credential expire or come up for renewal?
  • Are findings or progress reports public, including areas where the destination still needs to improve?
  • Does the evidence address local residents and culture as well as environmental issues?
  • Are my chosen accommodation and activities separately assessed?
