The best e-reader is the one that fits what you read, where you get books, and how you use the device. Start with five questions: Are your books mostly plain text or do they need color? Do you borrow from a public library, buy from one store, or load your own files? Will you read near water? Do you need page-turn buttons, audiobooks, handwriting, or PDF markup? Then compare screen size, file and library support, storage, waterproofing, and battery claims for the exact model sold in your market.
For novels and other text-heavy books, a compact black-and-white reader is usually the simplest choice. Color becomes worthwhile for comics, illustrated books, manga covers, children’s books, and highlighted documents. A larger stylus-compatible model is aimed at annotation and document work rather than ordinary page turning.

Begin with the books you actually read
An e-reader is a reading environment, not just a small tablet. Its screen, bookstore, file handling and borrowing options determine whether your existing collection feels convenient or frustrating. List the types of material you expect to read before comparing specifications.

Black-and-white E Ink is designed around long-form text. If you mainly read novels, biographies, news books or other reflowable e-books, prioritize comfortable typography, adjustable text size, front lighting, low weight and the store or file ecosystem you already use. Color is not automatically an upgrade for this use: it can add cost without changing the experience of reading black text on a page.

- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Comics, illustrated books and manga
Color covers, diagrams and illustrations are a reason to consider a color E Ink model. Check the exact display technology and screen size rather than assuming that every color reader is interchangeable. A 6-inch color screen is more portable, while a 7-inch screen gives artwork and panels more room but adds physical size.
PDFs and marked-up documents
Documents often benefit from a larger screen because fewer lines and diagrams are forced into a small viewport. If you need to write in margins, highlight heavily or make handwritten notes, look for explicit stylus compatibility. Stylus support is a specialist feature; it is not necessary for ordinary reading, and the pen may be sold separately.
Choose black-and-white or color E Ink
When black-and-white is the better fit
- You read mostly novels or other text without color-dependent diagrams.
- You want a compact, straightforward reader and do not need handwriting.
- You would rather spend on waterproofing, storage or a case than on a color layer.
Black-and-white models remain a sensible default because the relevant decision is readability and handling, not the number of colors a specification sheet can display.
When color earns its place
- Comics, illustrated non-fiction, children’s books or color-coded charts are part of your routine.
- You want color covers and illustrations to remain visible without using a separate device.
- You are willing to verify the particular color E Ink panel and accept the model’s price and size.
Color E Ink should be judged by the material you will read, not by the assumption that newer always means better. Kobo currently lists both black-and-white and color readers in different sizes, including 6-inch and 7-inch examples.
Screen size, lighting and typography
A compact screen is easier to hold in one hand and pack for travel. A larger screen reduces the need to turn pages in wide layouts and gives PDFs, comics and handwritten notes more room. Whichever size you choose, confirm that the model has front lighting and adjustable text size if those controls matter to you. A specification comparison should use the exact regional model; names can cover different configurations in different markets.
Check the bookstore, file formats and digital rights
Store convenience
Kindle and Kobo readers are built around their respective stores. Buying inside the platform is convenient, but a purchase is normally tied to the account and rights rules of that ecosystem. Do not assume that an e-book bought from one store will transfer to another reader. Verify the title, country rights and any digital-rights-management restrictions before treating a move as possible.

Personal files and sideloading
Kobo’s product information says its readers support a wide range of e-book formats, and TechRadar’s 2026 comparison describes Kobo as more open for sideloading and broader in file support than Kindle. “Supports a format” does not guarantee that every file will open: encryption, an account requirement or a library-loan restriction can still block access. Make a list of the formats in your existing library and check them against the current manufacturer documentation for the model you plan to buy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLibrary borrowing is a location-dependent feature
Public-library support depends on both your country and the library service used by your local system. TechRadar reports that Kindle borrowing is limited to users in the United States. It reports that Kobo borrowing depends on local support for OverDrive. Those are service conditions, not universal device guarantees.
- Find your public library’s online catalog and identify the borrowing service it uses.
- Check whether the library offers e-books in your country on the device platform you are considering.
- Confirm that the exact reader model can authenticate and download those loans, rather than relying on a general brand claim.
- Check what happens when a loan expires; a file that can be downloaded is still governed by the library’s loan and DRM rules.
If library borrowing is a deciding factor, perform this check before purchasing. A reader with excellent hardware is a poor choice if it cannot access the catalog you use.
Decide which physical features change your daily use
Weight and shape
Weight matters most when you read for long sessions or hold the device in one hand. Compare the dimensions and mass of the exact configuration, including whether a case will be fitted. A larger screen can improve document comfort while making the reader less pocketable.
Page-turn buttons
Touch controls are unobtrusive, but physical buttons can be useful when your other hand is occupied, when wearing gloves or when you prefer not to swipe. Kobo’s Libra Colour includes page-turn buttons. Treat buttons as a handling preference rather than a measure of text quality.
Waterproofing
Water resistance is valuable for reading beside a pool, in a bath or during wet-weather travel. Confirm the stated rating for the exact model; do not infer it from a family name. The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation specification in Amazon’s UK support guide lists IPX8 waterproofing. Kobo’s US listing identifies waterproofing for Clara Colour. A water-resistant rating does not make a device immune to damage from salt water, cleaning chemicals or a damaged seal, so follow the manufacturer’s conditions.
Rank #3
- Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Consider audiobooks, handwriting and annotation separately
Audiobooks
Bluetooth audiobook support is a selection criterion listed in Kobo’s buying guidance. If you listen as well as read, verify that the exact reader supports Bluetooth audio, the services you use and the file or account rules attached to those books. Do not assume that every model in a product family has identical audio features.
Handwriting and stylus input
Stylus compatibility is useful for margin notes, planning, signatures or document markup. Kobo lists stylus compatibility on selected devices and says the Kobo Stylus is sold separately. The accessory is therefore an additional purchase and must be matched to a supported model; a generic capacitive pen is not a substitute for documented active-stylus support.
Highlighting without a stylus
For ordinary books, touch selection is usually enough for highlights and typed notes. If you only mark an occasional passage, buying a larger note-taking model may add bulk without solving a real problem. Reserve the stylus decision for readers whose workflow genuinely includes sustained handwriting or document review.

Storage
Sixteen gigabytes is listed for the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation, Kobo Clara BW and Kobo Clara Colour examples in the cited product documentation. Kobo lists 32 GB for Libra Colour. Storage needs depend on book type: novels consume little space, while comics, PDFs and audiobooks can be much larger. Leave room for software and future downloads instead of calculating only against today’s library.
Charging connector
The Amazon UK support guide lists USB-C charging for the Paperwhite 12th Generation. Check the connector on any other model independently, especially if you want one cable for several devices.
Battery estimates are not a common test
Amazon lists up to 12 weeks of battery life for the Paperwhite 12th Generation. Kobo says its e-readers can last several days or weeks between charges. These are manufacturer estimates, not results from one standardized test, and actual life changes with front-light brightness, wireless use, Bluetooth audio, note-taking and reading time. Use the figures to set expectations within a model family, not to rank brands as though every number came from the same laboratory.
Rank #4
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Upgrade your reading experience – The Signature Edition features an auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and 32 GB storage.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.
Current model examples and what they suit
The examples below were documented on October 13, 2026. They illustrate different priorities, not a complete market inventory or universal recommendations. Specifications can vary by market or configuration, and prices and stock change.
| Model | Documented screen | Storage | Documented features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) | Not stated in the cited Amazon UK support guide | 16 GB | Adjustable warm light, USB-C charging, IPX8 waterproofing; Amazon lists up to 12 weeks of battery life; release listed as 2024 |
| Kobo Clara BW | 6-inch black-and-white E Ink Carta 1300 HD | 16 GB | Compact black-and-white reading |
| Kobo Clara Colour | 6-inch color E Ink Kaleido 3 | 16 GB | Waterproofing listed on Kobo’s US product page |
| Kobo Libra Colour | 7-inch color E Ink Kaleido 3 | 32 GB | Page-turn buttons; compatible with Kobo Stylus, which Kobo’s international comparison page says is sold separately |
These entries show why a model name is not enough. The Paperwhite example has a documented battery estimate and waterproof rating; the Kobo examples emphasize screen type, size, storage and handling differences. Confirm live specifications on the manufacturer’s page for your country before ordering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match common reader profiles to a sensible starting point
The portable novel reader
Choose a compact black-and-white model with adjustable lighting and text size. Put store access and library compatibility ahead of color, stylus support and maximum storage. Waterproofing becomes a priority if you read while travelling or near water.
The comics and illustrated-book reader
Start with a color model and compare 6-inch versus 7-inch handling. Check that the file formats and DRM used by your comics service work on the device. Storage deserves more attention than it does for a novels-only library because image-heavy books are larger.
The public-library borrower
Begin with the library’s country and service support, then choose hardware. Verify whether your library uses OverDrive and whether the exact Kobo model is supported, or whether Kindle borrowing is available to you; TechRadar’s comparison limits Kindle borrowing to US users.
The document annotator
Prioritize a larger screen and documented stylus compatibility. Confirm how the reader handles your PDF files and whether handwritten notes can be exported in the format you need. A stylus sold separately should be included in your total budget.
Best Value

The audiobook listener
Verify Bluetooth audio, account compatibility and storage for downloaded audio. If audiobooks are occasional rather than central, a simpler reader may be better value than choosing a model around a feature you rarely use.
A practical buying procedure
- Write down your reading mix. Separate novels, comics, illustrated books, PDFs, library loans and audiobooks.
- Identify your content sources. Record the stores you use, the formats in your personal files and the public library service in your country.
- Set the screen requirement. Choose black-and-white for text-first reading, color for meaningful illustrations, and a larger panel when documents or handwriting dominate.
- Choose handling features. Decide whether you need page-turn buttons, waterproofing, one-handed portability or a stylus.
- Check storage and charging. Compare the stated capacity with your largest files and confirm the charging connector.
- Read the exact regional specification. Confirm waterproofing, Bluetooth, battery estimate, supported formats and accessories for the configuration sold where you live.
- Test the ecosystem before paying. Open your library’s catalog, review borrowing instructions and check the DRM status of representative personal files.
- Recheck availability and price. Retail prices and stock are changeable; do not treat an older listing as a current offer.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying color for a text-only library
Color does not automatically improve black-and-white novels. If you do not read illustrated material, spend the decision-making effort on comfort, lighting, waterproofing and ecosystem fit.
Assuming format support means universal access
A reader may accept an EPUB or another format while refusing a particular file because it is encrypted, tied to an account or still on loan. Check both the format and the rights attached to the file.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming library support is worldwide
Library borrowing is regional. Confirm your own library and country rather than relying on a US feature description or a general brand comparison.
Comparing battery numbers as laboratory results
“Up to” figures and “several days or weeks” statements use different conditions. Wireless radios, lighting and audio can shorten runtime substantially. Treat a battery claim as a rated estimate.
Forgetting accessory compatibility
A stylus may be sold separately and work only with selected models. Check the supported list before buying the reader or pen.
What the sustainability claim does—and does not—tell you
Rakuten Kobo’s comparison page says a device exterior contains a minimum of 85.5% recycled content: 75.5% post-consumer recycled content and 10% ocean-bound plastic. The page does not state a publication year, and this is a manufacturer claim rather than an independently audited figure. Use it as one product attribute, not as a complete assessment of durability, repairability or lifecycle impact.

Choose the ecosystem first when library borrowing or an existing digital collection is central. Choose the screen second: black-and-white for text, color for illustrations, and a larger panel for documents and handwriting. Then confirm the practical details—waterproofing, buttons, Bluetooth, storage, charging and the battery estimate—for the exact regional model. This process prevents an attractive specification from outweighing the feature that determines whether you can read the books you actually own or borrow.
