Azure Media Services is retired, so it can no longer be the service behind a new always-on YouTube playlist stream. If your goal is simply to play prerecorded videos continuously on YouTube, choose a YouTube encoder that runs on hardware you operate or a hosted streaming service. If you are replacing a broader Azure Media Services workflow—such as on-demand encoding, delivery, or content protection—you need to assess that workload separately; a playlist tool is not automatically a like-for-like replacement.
First decide what you are replacing
Microsoft’s lifecycle listing gives June 30, 2024 as Azure Media Services’ retirement date. Microsoft’s lifecycle record establishes the date; it does not identify one universal replacement for every former workload.

If you only need a YouTube playlist stream
You need a way to send a continuous video stream to YouTube Live. YouTube describes an encoder as the component that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its encoder options include software running on a computer and standalone hardware. For prerecorded videos, a hosted continuous-stream service may also fit: YouTube’s directory describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live streaming. Those directory descriptions are not comparative reliability tests.
If you are migrating a media platform
List the Azure Media Services capabilities your system actually used—such as encoding, live streaming, on-demand streaming, delivery, or content protection—before assessing replacements. A creator-focused service that loops a playlist does not, by that fact alone, replace those platform functions. In a June 20, 2024 Microsoft Q&A response, employee moderator Bryan Trach pointed customers needing on-demand encoding, live streaming, on-demand streaming, or content protection toward Microsoft’s partner ecosystem, naming Bitmovin, MediaKind, and Ravnur as examples. Treat those as leads to assess, not a ranked or verified current shortlist: the response does not compare products or map them to specific workloads.

Choose a route for a continuous YouTube stream
The options below address different operating needs, not interchangeable feature sets. The available product-directory and Microsoft sources do not provide a standardized comparison of cost, uptime, stream quality, or failure rates.

Set up the YouTube side
- Enable live streaming on the channel. If it has not been enabled before, YouTube says the first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. That is an initial enablement window, not an uptime promise. Once enabled, YouTube says a stream can go live instantly. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Choose the encoder route. Decide whether you will run software on a computer, use standalone encoder hardware, or use a hosted service. YouTube’s encoder page covers the first two; check the hosted provider’s own setup documentation for its workflow.
- Get the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Enter them where the encoder or hosted service requests them. Treat the stream key like a password: do not post it, share it publicly, or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
- Test before relying on a continuous stream. Confirm that the correct channel and stream are selected, the video plays as intended, and the stream reaches YouTube. Before choosing a hosted service for an unattended stream, check its current plan limits and what it does after a disconnection; the YouTube directory does not establish provider-specific recovery behavior.
Keep copyright and channel eligibility in view
A technically successful stream is not necessarily authorized or eligible for monetization. Use video and audio you own or have permission to stream, and check the rights for every item in a playlist, including music and background audio. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to connect an encoder; it does not determine whether your content has the necessary rights or meets monetization requirements. Review YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content before scheduling a long-running stream.

For a wider Azure Media Services migration, turn the old workflow into a requirements list rather than looking for a single product label. Identify whether you need encoding, live contribution, on-demand packaging or delivery, content protection, or other platform functions, then compare current partner offerings against each requirement. Microsoft’s Q&A names Bitmovin, MediaKind, and Ravnur but does not provide a feature matrix, implementation guidance, or a best-fit recommendation. Ask vendors to confirm current product availability and coverage for your specific workflow.
