Choose it through a comparable, authorized proof of concept—not by counting features or accepting a vendor’s raw asset total.
Use the same seed data, scope, known-asset test set, and evaluation period for every candidate. Then compare missed assets, false positives, confidence signals, change detection, prioritization, integrations, and the staff effort required to remediate findings.

First decide what problem you are buying for
External attack surface management (EASM) is concerned with assets reachable from the public internet. Attack surface management is broader: it can include internal digital systems and, depending on the product, physical or other organizational assets. Some platforms combine external discovery with internal inventory and context under labels such as ASM or cyber asset attack surface management (CAASM).

Those categories overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Write a one-sentence buying objective before looking at products:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- External discovery: find domains, cloud workloads, applications, services, certificates, and other assets visible from outside the organization.
- Inventory reconciliation: compare what is recorded in asset systems with what is actually exposed online.
- Exposure management: connect discovered assets to vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, exploitability, and business impact.
- Operational monitoring: detect new assets and service changes continuously or on a defined schedule.
- Workflow enablement: send reliable, owned findings to ticketing, SIEM, reporting, or other operational systems.
If the main problem is an incomplete CMDB, an external discovery product may reveal the gap but will not automatically repair ownership, naming, or lifecycle processes. If the organization already has strong discovery and monitoring, integration quality, history, exports, and access controls may matter more than another raw feed of internet observations.
Define the boundary before a vendor scans anything
Discovery can cross organizational and third-party boundaries quickly. Make the authorized boundary explicit in writing and give the same scope to every candidate.
List the entities and environments
- Legal entities and subsidiaries that belong in the assessment.
- Brand names, domains, country-code domains, and known subdomains.
- Cloud accounts, subscriptions, projects, regions, and service providers.
- Acquired companies whose systems may still be operating under old names.
- Development, staging, disaster-recovery, and test environments.
- Supplier-managed, co-hosted, and outsourced infrastructure.
Separate in-scope, out-of-scope, and disputed assets
Mark assets that must not be scanned or reported, even if they appear technically related. Ask how the product supports exclusions, suppression, ownership reassignment, and disputed attribution. Include a small set of known out-of-scope assets in the test so you can see whether the platform respects your boundary rather than merely producing a larger list.

Use authoritative records to assemble a list of assets the tool should find. Include ordinary and difficult cases: an application behind a content-delivery service, a cloud-hosted API, a certificate shared by several names, a supplier-operated service, and a recently created subdomain. Record the expected owner and environment for each item. Do not reveal more seed information to one vendor than another.
Run a comparable proof of concept
A proof of concept should test the complete path from seed information to an owner taking action. Use an identical scope, seed set, observation window, and success criteria for every candidate.
- Provide the seed set. Give each vendor the same authorized domains, IP ranges, cloud identifiers, or other starting entities. Record exactly what was supplied.
- Freeze the evaluation scope. Document exclusions, supplier boundaries, legal approvals, scan restrictions, and the contact responsible for questions.
- Ask for the discovery method. Have the vendor explain which public relationships and integrations are used to expand from the seeds, such as DNS, certificates, network observations, cloud inventory, web presence, and supplier identification.
- Run the same observation period. Note when discovery begins, when each asset first appears, and when changes are reflected. If a product supports scheduled and on-demand checks, test both where practical.
- Reconcile results. Match discovered assets to the known-asset test set. Classify each result as confirmed in scope, confirmed out of scope, unresolved, duplicate, or false positive.
- Inspect representative findings. Choose several high-, medium-, and low-confidence results. Follow each from discovery through evidence, validation, severity, ownership, and recommended action.
- Test a change. With authorization, add or remove a DNS record, expose or close a test service, or change a cloud resource tag. Measure how the product records the event and how quickly it becomes visible.
- Send a finding through the workflow. Export or integrate a sample into the system your operators use. Check whether the recipient has enough context to act without returning to the security team for basic facts.
Keep a dated evaluation log. A product that appears strong in a live demonstration may require considerable manual cleanup when applied to your actual records and ownership model.
Compare discovery coverage by asset type
Do not use total asset count as the main measure of coverage. A useful inventory has the right asset classes, reliable relationships, and enough evidence for an owner to confirm or reject each result.

| Asset or relationship | What to verify | Acceptance test |
|---|---|---|
| Domains and subdomains | DNS relationships, historical names, environment labels, and ownership evidence | Seed a known production and staging name; check whether both are found and correctly classified |
| IP addresses and exposed ports | Address ownership, service identity, port state, and hosting context | Use a known address with more than one service and check for correct association and deduplication |
| Cloud workloads | Account or subscription linkage, region, resource type, and public exposure | Compare an externally discovered workload with the corresponding cloud inventory record |
| Web applications | Application URL, technology details, environment, and related domains | Test an application fronted by a shared delivery or hosting layer |
| APIs | API hostname or endpoint, authentication exposure, documentation clues, and owner | Provide a known API hostname and see whether it is separated from the parent web application |
| Certificates | Certificate names, validity, reuse across services, and relationship to your organization | Check a certificate that includes several names and determine whether attribution is explained |
| Services and technologies | Observed service, version or technology family, evidence date, and confidence | Compare a known service change with the product’s recorded technology history |
| Supplier-managed assets | Third-party relationship, attribution confidence, and scope controls | Test a supplier asset that should be visible but not treated as directly owned |
Documentation from one EASM product lists domains, subdomains, cloud workloads, web applications, APIs, certificates, services, exposed ports, vulnerabilities, and change detection as inventory areas. The NCSC also identifies DNS, certificates, services, web presence, and supplier identification as common visibility needs. These lists describe useful categories, not a guarantee that every product discovers them with equal accuracy.
Judge attribution, confidence, and provenance
Finding an asset is only half the problem. The tool must show why it believes the asset belongs to your organization and how certain that relationship is.

Evidence every result should expose
- The seed or relationship that led to discovery.
- Observed DNS, certificate, hosting, network, web, or cloud evidence.
- The date and source of the observation.
- Confidence or uncertainty indicators.
- The proposed organization, entity, environment, and owner.
- Links to related assets and duplicate records.
- A way to mark, suppress, correct, or remove a false positive.
Ask the vendor to open an ambiguous result rather than a polished success case. A large number of weakly attributed assets can create more work than a smaller, defensible inventory. Test whether an analyst can change scope or ownership without deleting the underlying evidence.
Test freshness and change detection
Asset inventories decay quickly when organizations deploy cloud resources, change certificates, migrate applications, or hand systems to suppliers. Ask four separate questions:
- How often does full discovery run?
- How often are existing assets re-analyzed for service and exposure changes?
- Can the customer choose daily, weekly, or on-demand scans?
- How soon does a material change appear in the interface, alert, export, and integration?
The Google Cloud page for Mandiant ASM describes daily, weekly, and on-demand scan choices. Qualys documentation describes continuous change detection. These are vendor descriptions, not independent speed or completeness benchmarks; they do not establish a universal cadence or prove that every change will be detected at the same rate.
During the proof of concept, perform at least one controlled change and record detection time, evidence quality, alert behavior, and whether the old state remains available in history. A product that finds a new asset but cannot show when it appeared may be difficult to use for incident review or control assurance.
Inspect finding quality from discovery to remediation
Have the vendor walk through findings in the same order an analyst would use them. For each sample, confirm that the interface presents:
- The affected asset and its current scope.
- What was observed and by which source.
- Confidence and uncertainty, clearly distinguished from severity.
- The reason the issue matters, including relevant exposure and affected service.
- Validation steps or corroborating evidence.
- A practical next action and suggested owner.
- History, status, comments, and suppression or exception handling.
The NCSC recommends accurate findings, clear marking of low-confidence results, and the ability to remove false positives. Treat those as acceptance criteria. If analysts must export data and manually reconstruct evidence before opening a ticket, include that labor in the comparison.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Evaluate prioritization in your own risk context
Risk scores are not interchangeable between products. Ask how the ranking accounts for:
- Where the exposure sits in the attack surface.
- Likelihood that the issue can be exploited.
- Potential business, operational, legal, or safety impact.
- Asset criticality and owner-provided context.
- Threat intelligence and active exploitation information.
- Your organization’s tolerance, exceptions, and remediation deadlines.
The NCSC cites location, exploit likelihood, and potential impact as useful prioritization factors and gives enrichment with known-exploited-vulnerability information as an example of threat-informed ranking. Compare several sample cases with your own security team’s judgment. Look for adjustable rules, explainable scoring, and the ability to override a ranking with a documented reason.
Check integrations and the human workflow
Assess both directions of data flow.
Inbound context
- Asset databases and CMDBs.
- Cloud account and resource inventories.
- Vulnerability scanners and configuration systems.
- Identity, ownership, business-service, and environment data.
- Threat-intelligence sources.
Outbound action
- SIEM and security operations platforms.
- Ticketing and case-management systems.
- Messaging or alerting channels.
- Scheduled reports and raw data exports.
- APIs for internal automation.
Verify field mapping, deduplication, update behavior, permissions, and failure handling. A ticket should contain the asset, evidence, confidence, severity rationale, remediation context, and a stable reference back to history. Ask what happens when an asset owner changes, a finding is suppressed, or an integration is unavailable.

Review role-based access controls and least-privilege options. Microsoft documentation for its EASM product, for example, describes role-based access; the existence of that feature in one product does not establish equivalent granularity elsewhere.
Match capabilities to your organization
The right weighting depends on existing records, staffing, monitoring, and security priorities. Use these implications as prompts rather than fixed buyer categories:
- Small or lightly staffed security team: emphasize clear external views, defensible attribution, simple prioritization, and low-effort remediation workflows.
- Mature monitoring program: emphasize data feeds, APIs, exports, integration reliability, history, and granular access controls.
- Fast-changing cloud environment: test discovery cadence, change detection, cloud context, and ownership updates under realistic deployment conditions.
- Many subsidiaries or suppliers: emphasize entity separation, disputed attribution, exclusions, delegated access, and evidence that can withstand review.
- Existing inventory blind spots: compare discovered assets against recorded assets and measure how easily discrepancies can be assigned and resolved.
The NCSC states that product choice depends on the size and nature of the organization, existing asset records, current monitoring or vulnerability scanning, and present security challenges. It also notes that the appropriate choice can change as the organization evolves.
Use a comparison matrix instead of a feature checklist
| Decision axis | Questions to answer | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery coverage | Which asset types, data sources, seed types, integrations, and expansion methods are supported? | Matched known-asset results by class |
| Attribution quality | What proves ownership, how is uncertainty shown, and how are exclusions handled? | Evidence screenshots or exports for confirmed and ambiguous assets |
| Freshness | What schedules, on-demand checks, change detection, and history are available? | Timed change test and historical record |
| Finding usefulness | Are provenance, validation, ranking logic, and remediation context visible? | Completed walkthroughs of representative findings |
| Operational fit | Can the platform import context and export reliable, owned work to existing systems? | Sample ticket, API payload, report, and role test |
| Organizational fit | Does it match team capacity, inventory maturity, monitoring, and security priorities? | Documented workload, responsibilities, and acceptance criteria |
Score each axis using the same scale and write a reason for every score. Keep raw observations separate from vendor claims and from your team’s judgment.
What commonly cited products document—and what that does not prove
Product examples can clarify terminology, but official feature descriptions are not independent comparative results.
| Product example | Documented positioning or capability | Limit of the evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Mandiant ASM | Continuous monitoring, discovery from organizational seed data, technology and service identification, and daily, weekly, or on-demand scans | The description does not independently establish coverage, attribution accuracy, or detection speed |
| Microsoft Defender EASM | Recursive infrastructure discovery through connections to known legitimate assets, infrastructure and vulnerability insights, and role-based access | Documentation does not provide a cross-product accuracy or completeness comparison |
| Qualys EASM | Inventory areas including domains, subdomains, cloud workloads, web applications, APIs, certificates, services, exposed ports, vulnerabilities, and change detection | The listed capabilities do not establish how well they perform in your scope |
| Tenable One ASM | Positioning around external-facing assets and exposure data, distinguished from a centralized asset inventory | Positioning does not independently compare discovery or prioritization outcomes |
Use these descriptions to formulate demo questions, then verify each claim against your authorized test set. There is no supported basis here for naming a ranked winner, comparing prices, or promising a particular service-level commitment.
Questions to put in the vendor evaluation and contract
- What seed information is required, and what discovery sources and pivots are used?
- How is ownership confidence calculated and displayed?
- Can analysts exclude assets, mark disputed ownership, and restore an excluded result?
- Which asset classes are included in the base service, and which require additional modules or integrations?
- What are the normal and maximum discovery intervals?
- Are on-demand scans available, and are they limited by plan, scope, or rate?
- How are changes, disappearances, duplicates, and historical states represented?
- Can low-confidence findings be separated from confirmed exposures?
- How are threat intelligence and known-exploited-vulnerability data incorporated?
- What inbound and outbound integrations, APIs, exports, and report formats are supported?
- How are roles, delegated administration, audit logs, and data retention handled?
- What happens when a supplier asset is related to your domain but not owned by you?
- What support, deployment, data-residency, and service commitments apply to your edition and region?
- How are pricing, usage limits, renewal terms, and additional asset or scan charges calculated?

Comparing different seeds or scopes
Why it fails: one product may receive more information or a broader legal boundary.
Recovery: rerun the proof of concept with identical seeds, exclusions, dates, and authorized targets.
Accepting a confidence score without provenance
Why it fails: a number does not tell an analyst why an asset was linked to the organization.
Recovery: require observable relationships, dates, sources, and a correction path.
Ignoring out-of-scope behavior
Why it fails: supplier and unrelated assets can contaminate reports and create legal risk.
Recovery: include known out-of-scope cases and test exclusion, suppression, and dispute workflows.
Evaluating only the dashboard
Why it fails: remediation work happens in tickets, SIEMs, reports, APIs, and owner communications.
Recovery: send a real sample finding through the intended workflow and measure the manual steps.
Treating vendor cadence claims as guarantees
Why it fails: documented daily or continuous options do not guarantee equal detection speed for every asset or change.
Best Value
Recovery: perform a controlled change test and document the measured result for your environment.
Buying a category instead of a process
Why it fails: discovery alone does not establish ownership or remediation accountability.
Recovery: assign owners, define response targets, and decide how exceptions and disputed assets will be governed before rollout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlan the rollout around repeatable operations
- Establish governance. Name the service owner, data owners, scanning approvers, asset owners, and escalation contacts.
- Baseline the inventory. Import or record authoritative seeds, known assets, exclusions, and current ownership gaps.
- Validate attribution. Review ambiguous and high-impact assets with infrastructure, cloud, application, and supplier teams.
- Define prioritization rules. Document how exposure location, exploit likelihood, impact, threat intelligence, and organizational tolerance affect rank.
- Connect workflows. Configure the minimum inbound context and outbound destinations needed for an owner to act.
- Set review intervals. Decide how often teams review new assets, material changes, suppressed findings, and unresolved ownership.
- Measure outcomes. Track known assets found, false positives, unresolved attribution, time to owner assignment, time to remediation, and stale records.
Keep the original proof-of-concept results as a baseline. Recheck the same known assets after deployment so a change in coverage or attribution is visible rather than assumed.
Costs, requirements, and evidence limits
Current prices, deployment requirements, service-level commitments, regional availability, and partner terms are not established by the material available here. Obtain those details for the exact edition, scope, and region you intend to purchase. Confirm whether pricing changes with asset count, scan frequency, cloud accounts, data retention, users, integrations, or additional modules.
Also verify data handling, residency, retention, access logging, support coverage, and the process for stopping scans or deleting collected data. Treat every vendor feature statement as a claim to validate in your authorized environment. No independent bake-off in the available evidence supports a universal winner or a numeric accuracy benchmark.
Make the final decision
Select the candidate that produces the most trustworthy, current, and operationally useful view of your exposed assets for your defined boundary. Give more weight to confirmed ownership, transparent evidence, manageable uncertainty, and a working remediation path than to an impressive raw count. Revisit the choice when your cloud footprint, subsidiaries, suppliers, monitoring maturity, or security priorities change.
“Choosing the EASM that is right for your organisation will depend on many factors including the size and nature of your organisation, your existing record keeping and understanding of your online assets, your current level of monitoring or vulnerability scanning, and the current security challenges you are facing.”
