Choose an application observability platform by proving that it can ingest the signals your services actually emit, connect those signals into fast investigations, and fit your security, deployment, staffing, and total-cost limits. Do not choose from feature checklists alone. Start with representative incidents, test the complete path from alert to root-cause evidence, and model telemetry and retention costs at your expected scale.
What an application observability platform must do
Observability is the ability to investigate unexpected behavior by asking both “What is happening?” and “Why is it happening?” A platform is useful when it lets an engineer move from a symptom to the affected service, dependency, request, and error context rather than merely displaying isolated charts. The OpenTelemetry observability primer describes the roles of the main signals:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Signal | What it tells you | Typical investigation use |
|---|---|---|
| Metrics | Aggregated numeric measurements over time | Detecting error-rate, latency, saturation, or traffic changes |
| Logs | Timestamped messages and event details | Finding exceptions, configuration errors, and business or security events |
| Traces | A request’s path through services, represented by spans | Locating the service, database, queue, or external call that added latency or failed |
The platform should preserve enough context—service, environment, release, region, dependency, and request identity—to connect related signals. A trace may show where latency increased, a metric may show simultaneous resource pressure, and a log may contain the specific error. That cross-signal workflow is a buying requirement, not an assumption.

- Where did a request become slow?
- Which downstream service, database, queue, or third-party dependency was involved?
- Did the symptom begin after a release, configuration change, traffic spike, or infrastructure event?
- Is the error rate affecting a user-facing service objective?
- Can an engineer pivot from a metric to the relevant trace and then to the matching log without specialist knowledge?
Use these questions to define acceptance tests. A platform that collects data but cannot answer them quickly is not a good fit, regardless of how many integrations it advertises.
Identify every user and owner
List application developers, SREs, platform engineers, operations or security staff, and incident managers who will use or administer the system. Record what each group must do: instrument code, build dashboards, investigate alerts, manage access, configure retention, tune sampling, or control spend. AWS recommends evaluating feature fit, granularity, personas, security and authentication, integrations, scalability, and vendor support in its observability implementation guidance.
Inventory the production estate
Create a service-by-service inventory covering languages, frameworks, operating systems, containers, Kubernetes or other orchestration, serverless functions, databases, queues, cloud providers, data centers, and important third-party APIs. Mark which services are business-critical, internet-facing, regulated, or owned by another team. This inventory becomes the minimum coverage requirement for a shortlist.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck telemetry and instrumentation coverage
Verify all required signals and runtimes
For every candidate, verify ingestion of the traces, metrics, and logs you need, along with any additional signals required by your architecture. Confirm support for each language and framework, deployment environment, database, and serverless runtime. Ask whether the platform’s agents or collectors can run inside your approved network boundaries and whether they can reach the destination without unacceptable egress or firewall changes.

Understand what OpenTelemetry does—and does not do
OpenTelemetry documentation describes a vendor-neutral set of APIs, SDKs, and Collector components for generating, receiving, processing, and exporting telemetry. It is not a database, analysis interface, APM service, or complete observability platform. You still need a backend for storage and querying, plus dashboards, alerting, access controls, and operating procedures.
The OpenTelemetry project says its documentation lists support from more than 90 observability vendors, with that support-count update modified August 29, 2025. Treat “more than 90” as a project-published figure, not proof that every platform supports every signal, semantic convention, feature, or deployment mode.
Test the actual export path
OpenTelemetry compatibility does not guarantee equivalent functionality or even a usable forwarding configuration. AWS cautions that although most platforms accept OpenTelemetry-compatible signals, not every agent can be configured to forward them to every platform. Check all of the following:

- Language and runtime SDKs required by your services
- Collector distributions, processors, exporters, and deployment topology
- Trace, metric, and log coverage for each runtime
- Resource attributes and semantic context retained during export
- Sampling, filtering, batching, and retry behavior
- Whether you can route the same telemetry to another backend later
The Google Cloud instrumentation guidance illustrates two common patterns: instrument with an OpenTelemetry SDK and send through a Collector, or export directly from the application process. A Collector centralizes destination-specific configuration and generally keeps application instrumentation more portable; direct export can avoid operating a Collector but may couple application code to a provider. Google recommends a Collector when the environment supports it, while runtime examples differ, so validate the pattern in your own architecture.

Run a proof of concept around real incidents
A useful proof of concept (PoC) uses a representative service, realistic traffic, and failure scenarios. Do not score a platform from a scripted demo using synthetic data alone.
- Select representative workloads. Include at least one user-facing request path, an asynchronous or queue-based path if you use one, a database dependency, and a service deployed in each important environment.
- Instrument with your intended production pattern. Use the SDK, agent, or Collector configuration you expect to operate. Record code changes, deployment objects, network rules, and privileges required.
- Generate normal and failure traffic. Introduce latency, dependency errors, elevated resource pressure, a failed release, and malformed or unexpected input. Keep the scenarios repeatable.
- Start from the alert or symptom. Measure whether an on-call engineer can identify the affected service and open the relevant trace, span, metric, and log without undocumented expert steps.
- Test correlation. Verify that service, environment, release, region, dependency, and request identifiers remain searchable and consistent across signals.
- Test query and visualization work. Build a service overview, dependency view, latency breakdown, error investigation, and release comparison. Note which views require proprietary agents or custom data modeling.
- Exercise the incident workflow. Route alerts to your paging or incident system, attach useful context, acknowledge and resolve an alert, and verify that permissions work for responders and viewers.
- Repeat after data reduction. Apply the sampling, filtering, or retention policy you would use in production and confirm that the evidence needed for diagnosis remains available.
- Record operational effort and cost inputs. Capture Collector resources, dashboard and alert maintenance, onboarding time, query limits, ingestion volume, retention, and support requirements.
A platform should pass only when the team can complete the investigation with the data and access model it will have in production. The Snowflake observability overview describes this cross-signal workflow and highlights ingestion limits, retention controls, storage tiers, query performance, and pricing mechanics as buying considerations; it is company-authored educational material rather than independent comparative testing.
Compare candidates on the dimensions that affect operations
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer in the PoC and procurement review |
|---|---|
| Application and runtime coverage | Are required languages, frameworks, clouds, containers, serverless functions, databases, and third-party dependencies supported and instrumentable? |
| Signal coverage and context | Which traces, metrics, logs, and other signals are ingested? Are request and deployment attributes preserved? |
| Investigation workflow | Can users move from an alert or symptom to a trace, dependency, metric, and log? How flexible are queries and service maps? |
| OpenTelemetry path | Which OTLP signals, SDKs, Collectors, exporters, and agent-forwarding options work? What configuration limits or migration barriers exist? |
| Security and governance | How are identity, authorization, residency, retention, audit records, network access, and organization-specific controls handled? |
| Deployment and reliability | Does SaaS, managed, or self-hosted deployment fit? Who operates collectors, upgrades, scaling, backups, and availability? |
| Team fit and time to value | What specialists, training, instrumentation effort, onboarding, and ongoing ownership are required? |

| Ecosystem fit | Are alerting, paging, incident management, CI/CD, cloud, ticketing, and required automation integrations available? |
Evaluate deployment, security, and governance
Choose the operating model deliberately
Cloud-managed and SaaS services usually reduce backend maintenance and shorten time to value. Self-hosted or open-source deployments can increase control and may reduce license expenditure, but they add setup, upgrades, capacity planning, backups, troubleshooting, and staff training. Agents and collectors still require management in every model.

Resolve security requirements before selection
Document data residency, retention, identity and access management, authentication, authorization, auditability, network egress, encryption, and security-review requirements. Confirm where raw logs and trace attributes are stored, whether sensitive fields can be redacted before export, and how administrators and incident responders are separated. AWS specifically advises evaluating authentication and authorization support and whether user and login experiences meet organizational requirements. Regulatory and certification fit depends on your jurisdiction and policy; verify it for the exact service, plan, and deployment.
Plan for reliability and scale
Determine how collectors buffer data during an outage, how retries affect applications, what happens when quotas are reached, and how the backend scales with services and telemetry. Test high-cardinality attributes, burst traffic, long-running traces, and noisy logs. Establish an owner and runbook for dropped telemetry, collector failures, backend availability incidents, and accidental cost spikes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Model the full cost of the data lifecycle
Do not compare headline prices without stating assumptions. Estimate volume by signal and service, expected growth, hot and cold retention, query frequency, ingestion and query limits, sampling or filtering, support, infrastructure, and engineering time. AWS identifies subscription, named-user, consumption, and volume-based pricing patterns and recommends total-cost-of-ownership analysis as users, architecture footprint, features, and applications grow.

Check billing units and current terms
Billing models differ by product, plan, geography, and telemetry configuration. For example, official Grafana Cloud Application Observability pricing documentation states that a new pricing model took effect February 13, 2026 and describes telemetry-based billing rather than host-hours for serverless environments such as CaaS and FaaS. This is a product-specific example, not a market-wide standard. Confirm current prices, quotas, retention, overage treatment, and contract terms immediately before committing.
Use a transparent decision scorecard
After the PoC, score each surviving candidate against weighted requirements rather than selecting the platform with the longest feature list. A practical scorecard can assign the highest weights to incident investigation, required runtime and signal coverage, and security constraints; medium weights to integrations, deployment effort, and team usability; and a separate cost model for current, growth, and incident scenarios.
Record evidence for every score: a successful test, a documented limitation, a required workaround, or an unresolved question. Mark non-negotiable failures separately so a low price cannot compensate for missing telemetry, unacceptable residency, or an investigation workflow the on-call team cannot use.
Warning signs that require a deeper test
- “OpenTelemetry compatible” is asserted without listing supported signals, protocols, runtimes, or forwarding configuration.
- A demonstration shows dashboards but not a complete alert-to-root-cause investigation.
- Pricing is stated only as a base plan without ingestion, retention, query, overage, or support assumptions.
- Required security, residency, audit, or access-control details are unavailable for the exact plan.
- The deployment model assumes skills or staffing your team does not have.
- Sampling or filtering removes the context needed to connect traces, metrics, and logs.
Make the choice reversible where possible
Keep application instrumentation as backend-neutral as practical, preferably through OpenTelemetry APIs and a Collector where that fits your environment. Standardize resource attributes, service names, environments, deployment identifiers, and redaction rules. Store dashboards, alerts, Collector configuration, and access policies as code when the platform supports it. Define an export or migration test before signing a long commitment: identify which raw telemetry, derived data, queries, alerts, and historical context can move and which must be rebuilt.
OpenTelemetry’s mission and values statement says: “With OpenTelemetry, we strive to provide a level playing field for all observability providers, avoid lock-in to any vendor, and interoperate with other OSS projects in the telemetry and observability ecosystem.” That goal can preserve choice, but it does not eliminate backend-specific schemas, query languages, retention limits, or proprietary analysis features. Verify portability with your own data and workflows.
Quick Recap
Questions to answer before signing
- Can every critical service emit the required signals through an approved network path?
- Can an on-call engineer diagnose each PoC incident using the intended permissions and production sampling policy?
- Are deployment, residency, retention, audit, and identity controls acceptable to security and compliance owners?
- Who will maintain instrumentation, collectors, dashboards, alerts, upgrades, and cost controls?
- What will the platform cost under current, growth, and incident workloads?
- Which capabilities, data, and operational artifacts would be difficult to move later?
