Choose the airline first, then choose the suitcase. A case is carry-on compliant only when its largest outside measurements—including wheels, handles, corner guards and other protrusions—fit the operating airline’s current height, width and depth limits for your cabin and route. A useful strict U.S. target is 22 × 14 × 9 inches, but it is not a worldwide rule. Confirm the policy for the carrier actually operating each flight before buying and again before departure.
Why the airline’s rule matters more than the suitcase label
“Carry-on,” “cabin size” and “international carry-on” are marketing descriptions, not acceptance guarantees. The operating airline, cabin class, fare, route and aircraft determine what may go in the overhead bin. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) states that carry-on allowances may vary by airline, cabin class and aircraft type. A codeshare can therefore create a mismatch: the airline that sold the ticket may publish one allowance while the partner operating the flight uses another.

Start with the carrier named as the operating airline on your itinerary. Check its baggage page for the exact cabin and route, and look for special rules on regional aircraft, basic or economy-light fares, and flights where overhead storage is limited. Delta, for example, notes that partner airlines can have different guidelines and that additional restrictions may apply when overhead space is constrained. The gate agent’s sizer and the operating carrier’s policy control if a product page, booking site or general travel chart disagrees.

| Source or use | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| IATA general reference | 56 × 45 × 25 cm (22 × 18 × 10 in) | A broad reference for carry-on baggage, including wheels and handles. Individual airlines may publish smaller dimensions or weight limits. |
| Common U.S. benchmark | 22 × 14 × 9 in | Delta and American Airlines publish this maximum for carry-on items. Their measurements include handles and wheels. |
| FAA traveler guidance | 45 linear inches | Height + width + depth. The FAA says most airlines use this as a reference but directs travelers to check the airline’s current maximum size. |
The 45-linear-inch figure cannot rescue a bag that fails one individual dimension. A 21 × 15 × 9-inch case totals 45 inches, yet it is 1 inch too wide for a 22 × 14 × 9-inch rule. Always compare height, width and depth separately, in the order and units used by the airline.
How to measure an aluminum suitcase accurately
Use the suitcase’s ready-to-travel exterior, not just the aluminum shell. Manufacturers sometimes list shell dimensions separately from overall dimensions, and a wheel housing or telescoping handle can add enough height or depth to fail a sizer.
- Identify the manufacturer’s measurement basis. Prefer a specification that explicitly says “external” or “overall” dimensions and includes wheels and handles. If the page lists only shell dimensions, treat the number as incomplete until you measure the assembled case yourself.
- Set the case upright and close every component. Retract the telescoping handle, close the latches or zipper, and place the wheels in their normal orientation. Do not compress a flexible pocket or push in a rigid corner guard.
- Measure the maximum height. Run a straightedge from the floor or lowest wheel contact point to the highest fixed part. Include wheel assemblies, top handles, rails and raised corner pieces.
- Measure the maximum width. Measure from the widest left edge to the widest right edge, including side handles, wheel housings and any external brackets.
- Measure the maximum depth. Include front and rear shell bulges, expansion panels, latch hardware and wheels that extend beyond the shell. Measure the case in its packed, closed condition if an expansion feature is available.
- Record the three values in one unit. Convert centimeters to inches only after recording the original specification, and round conservatively. A value of 22.1 inches should not be treated as 22 inches for a strict sizer.
- Check the airline’s sizer dimensions. If you own a physical sizer or can test at the airport, insert the case without forcing it. A case that fits only when tilted, its handle is pressed down, or its wheels are lifted is not reliably compliant.
Leave a modest dimensional margin when the airline’s limit is strict. A listed 22 × 14 × 9-inch case may be difficult to insert if manufacturing tolerances, a protruding wheel housing or a rigid corner exceeds the nominal measurement. The margin is a risk-reduction tactic, not a substitute for the airline’s sizer.

Choose a target size for your itinerary
When 22 × 14 × 9 inches is the right target
For flights governed by a U.S. carrier that publishes 22 × 14 × 9 inches, look for an aluminum case whose complete outside dimensions are at or below those numbers. If you fly several U.S. airlines, treating 22 × 14 × 9 inches as a conservative ceiling makes your selection more versatile than relying on a larger “international” label.
When the IATA reference is relevant
The 56 × 45 × 25 cm (22 × 18 × 10 in) IATA reference is wider and deeper than the common U.S. benchmark. It is useful for understanding the scale of a general international allowance, but it does not override a carrier’s own rule. An airline may use a smaller cabin bag, a personal-item-only fare or an aircraft-specific limit.

When the route or aircraft changes the answer
Regional jets and turboprops can have smaller overhead compartments. Some carriers accept a compliant bag at check-in but require it to be gate-checked when bins are full. A bag that fits the published dimensions can still be checked operationally; pack medication, documents, batteries and other essentials so they remain accessible if that happens.
Aluminum’s advantages—and the size trade-offs
Aluminum shells provide a rigid exterior and can resist crushing better than many soft-sided cases. Metal corner frames, latches and a structured interior can also make the case feel secure. Those benefits come with compromises that matter under a carry-on limit.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Higher empty weight: Aluminum hardware and a rigid shell can consume a large share of a weight allowance before packing begins.
- Less forgiving shape: A hard case cannot be squeezed into a sizer the way a soft bag sometimes can. Wheel housings and corner guards are part of the envelope.
- Capacity versus compliance: An expansion mechanism may add liters but push depth beyond the airline’s limit when open. Treat the expanded dimension as the controlling one if you intend to use it.
- Surface wear: Dents and scratches are cosmetic risks for metal shells. A dent that changes the maximum dimension can also create a practical sizer problem.
- Hardware service: Wheels, handles, latches and combination locks are replaceable only if the maker supplies parts or repair support. Check that policy before prioritizing shell material.
Compare specifications on the same axes
Compare each candidate using complete outside dimensions, empty weight, stated capacity and hardware—not liters alone. The figures below illustrate why a product called a carry-on may not fit a strict 22 × 14 × 9-inch rule.
| Case example | Listed external dimensions | Stated capacity | Empty weight | Result against 22 × 14 × 9 in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero Halliburton Classic Aluminum 3.0 International Carry-on | 22 × 14 × 9 in | 33 L | 11 lb | Matches the stated dimensions exactly; confirm the operating airline because the manufacturer describes airline fit as reference information. |
| Away Bigger Carry-On Aluminum Edition | 22.7 × 14.5 × 9.6 in, including wheels and handles | Not stated in the supplied specification | Not stated in the supplied specification | Exceeds the benchmark in height, width and depth. |
| RIMOWA Original Cabin | 21.7 × 15.8 × 9.1 in | Not stated in the supplied specification | Not stated in the supplied specification | Within the height number but exceeds the benchmark in width and depth. |
The exact-size example demonstrates the right way to read a specification: 22 × 14 × 9 inches is useful only when those are the complete outside measurements. Its 33-liter capacity does not tell you whether it will pass a particular carrier’s sizer, and its 11-pound empty weight can be decisive on a weight-restricted itinerary.
Plan weight before you compare capacity
Some airlines begin applying a cabin-bag weight limit at 5 kg (11 lb), according to IATA. An 11-pound empty aluminum case leaves no payload under an 11-pound allowance. Even a 7 kg or 8 kg limit leaves only the difference between that allowance and the case’s empty weight for clothing, electronics and toiletries.

Allowable packed contents = airline weight limit − measured empty case weight.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For example, a 7 kg limit minus a 4.5 kg case leaves 2.5 kg for everything inside. Weigh the case with its removable accessories installed, including a protective cover or packing cubes you will actually use. Verify whether the airline weighs the carry-on together with a personal item; policies differ.
Capacity in liters is still useful, but only after dimensions and weight work. Two cases with similar capacity can have different usable space because one devotes more volume to wheel wells, a frame or a divided lid. A rigid aluminum case also cannot be overstuffed beyond the latches without increasing its outside depth.
Inspect the hardware that affects real-world compliance
Wheels
Spinner wheels improve maneuverability but often create the widest and deepest projections. Check whether the listed dimensions include them, and inspect the wheel housings for anything that extends beyond the nominal body. A damaged or loose wheel can increase the maximum dimension and make an otherwise compliant case difficult to roll into a sizer.
Telescoping and top handles
Measure with the telescoping handle fully retracted. A recessed handle is less likely to add depth, while exposed rails or a raised grip can become the highest point. Confirm that the top carry handle does not sit above the manufacturer’s stated height.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Latches, hinges and locks
Aluminum cases commonly use frame latches rather than a zipper. Latches should close without forcing the shell together, and hinges should not protrude beyond the depth measurement. A built-in combination lock can be convenient, but check the maker’s instructions for airport-security access and replacement procedures rather than assuming every lock is accepted in every country.
Repair and warranty support
Ask whether wheels, handles, latches and shell components are available separately, how repairs are authorized, and whether coverage differs by country. A long warranty does not guarantee quick service during a trip, so pack a simple contingency such as a strap and keep essential items in a personal item.

- List every operating carrier. For a multi-leg journey, write down the airline operating each segment, cabin and fare type.
- Copy each carrier’s three-dimensional limit. Keep height, width and depth separate; note any weight limit and personal-item rule.
- Set the strictest target. If one segment allows 22 × 18 × 10 inches and another allows 22 × 14 × 9 inches, shop to the smaller envelope.
- Shortlist only cases with complete external measurements. Exclude pages that provide shell dimensions but omit wheels, handles or corner hardware.
- Check empty weight and calculate payload. Remove any case that leaves too little weight for the contents you need.
- Check expansion settings. Record both closed and expanded depth; use the expanded figure if you plan to travel expanded.
- Verify the return policy. A case can be technically compliant yet unusable if your airline’s sizer rejects it. Buy from a seller that allows an unused return after a home measurement.
- Test before departure. Pack it as you will travel, weigh it, and test the outside dimensions. Recheck the airline’s baggage page shortly before the flight because rules and equipment assignments can change.
Pitfalls and how to fix them
Relying on total linear inches
Symptom: The suitcase adds up to 45 inches but will not fit the airline’s box. Fix: Compare each axis with the published maximum; the largest individual difference controls.
Trusting “international carry-on” wording
Symptom: A product page calls the case cabin-sized, but one dimension is larger than your carrier’s limit. Fix: Ignore the label and use the complete external measurements. The examples above show that a case can exceed 22 × 14 × 9 inches while still being marketed as a carry-on.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMeasuring only the aluminum shell
Symptom: The shell fits a ruler, but the wheel frame or handle hits the sizer. Fix: Measure the maximum outside envelope with all fixed protrusions included.

Ignoring the empty case weight
Symptom: The packed case is overweight even though it has unused volume. Fix: Calculate payload from the airline’s kilogram limit and choose lighter hardware or a different shell if necessary.
Assuming every flight in a booking follows one policy
Symptom: The outbound flight accepts the case but a partner or regional segment does not. Fix: Apply the strictest rule among the operating carriers and aircraft types in the itinerary.
Forcing a borderline case into the sizer
Symptom: The bag fits only when tilted, pressed or stripped of an accessory. Fix: Treat it as noncompliant and choose a smaller case or leave more dimensional margin. Airport staff are not required to accept a bag that needs force.
Final decision checklist
- The operating airline and exact cabin or fare are identified for every flight.
- The airline’s current height, width, depth and weight limits are recorded.
- The candidate’s dimensions are external measurements including wheels, handles and protrusions.
- Each dimension—not just the sum of the three—is within the strictest limit.
- Closed and expanded depths are understood, and the intended setting complies.
- Empty weight leaves enough payload for the planned contents.
- Wheel, handle, latch, lock, warranty and repair details suit the trip.
- The packed case has been measured and weighed before leaving home.
A 22 × 14 × 9-inch aluminum suitcase is a sensible U.S. benchmark, not a universal promise. Selecting by the operating airline’s individual dimensions, leaving practical margin, and budgeting for the metal shell’s empty weight gives you the best chance of passing the airport sizer without sacrificing the durability and security that led you to aluminum.
