How to Choose an Air Purifier for Urban Pollution: Filters, CADR, and Room Size

For urban particle pollution, choose a mechanical air purifier whose smoke CADR is large enough for the entire room—not merely the corner where you place it. Measure the connected floor area, adjust upward for ceilings above 8 feet, and select a unit you can run at the fan speed whose CADR you need. If odors, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), or other gases are also a concern, add a purifier with a substantial, explicitly gas-targeted activated-carbon or other sorbent stage; a HEPA filter alone is a particle solution.

Use filtration alongside source control and appropriate ventilation. No air cleaner removes every pollutant, and CADR measures particle delivery, not gas removal. The guide below shows how to size capacity, evaluate filter technology, compare real-world trade-offs, and operate a purifier effectively.

What an air purifier can—and cannot—do for city pollution

Traffic, construction, heating, cooking and outdoor smoke can raise indoor concentrations of fine particles such as PM2.5. A portable purifier recirculates room air through a filter, reducing the particles that pass through it. It does not stop pollution at the source, seal a leaky building, or make outdoor air safe to breathe everywhere.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that “No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.” Its consumer guide also says, “Filtration does not replace the need to control pollutants and ventilate.” Read the full guidance in the EPA Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.

  • FIND COMFORT: Our filter has strong filtration performance of fine particles. 99.97% filtration efficiency for 0.1 to 0.3μm airborne particulates, including pollen, dust, and animal dander allergens. Tested by an independent lab
  • Particles: Mechanical filters, including HEPA and other pleated filters, trap particles. This is the core capability needed for PM2.5 and smoke-like pollution.
  • Gases: Odors and some VOCs require an adsorbent such as activated carbon. More carbon generally provides more capacity than a very thin carbon sheet, but the product must identify the gases it targets.
  • Pollution sources: Avoid bringing pollution indoors where possible, use kitchen and bathroom exhaust correctly, and ventilate with clean outdoor air when conditions allow.

Portable filtration can produce small improvements in cardiovascular and respiratory health in studies, but benefits are not necessarily noticeable to an individual. Treat a purifier as a risk-reduction tool, not a medical device or a guarantee of health outcomes.

Start with the number that matters: smoke CADR

CADR (clean air delivery rate) combines a filter’s particle-removal performance with the volume of air the machine moves. For the smallest particles among the common smoke, dust and pollen ratings, EPA identifies tobacco-smoke CADR as the most relevant figure. For urban PM2.5, compare smoke CADR first rather than relying on a “HEPA” label alone.

Manufacturers typically report CADR at the purifier’s highest fan speed. A unit may therefore clean less air—and make less noise—at its quieter settings. Confirm which speed produced the published number and whether you are willing to run the machine at that setting for the required period.

EPA’s smoke guidance uses a simple rule: select a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. For example, a 300-square-foot room calls for at least 200 cfm under that rule. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) says two-thirds is suitable under normal circumstances; during areas heavily affected by wildfire smoke, AHAM recommends a smoke CADR that matches the room area. Those rules are guidance for smoke-like particles, not a universal rating for every urban gas or pollutant. See the EPA Indoor Air Filtration guidance and AHAM’s wildfire-smoke recommendations (September 28, 2020).

Measure the whole space before choosing a model

Calculate floor area

  1. Measure the room’s length and width in feet.
  2. Multiply length by width to obtain square feet.
  3. Include every connected area the purifier must serve. An open living room, dining area and kitchen should be treated as one space if air moves freely between them.
  4. If the ceiling is higher than 8 feet, choose more capacity than the 8-foot estimate suggests. EPA’s sizing assumptions use an 8-foot ceiling.

Do not size from the area immediately around the device. A purifier placed in a bedroom but expected to clean a connected hallway and living room needs capacity for that combined area. If one available unit cannot meet the target, two or more strategically placed units can provide the needed total airflow.

EPA’s minimum particle-removal estimates

The following EPA estimates assume an 8-foot ceiling and are intended for particle removal. They are not guarantees for every pollution condition.

Room area Minimum CADR
100 sq ft 65 cfm
200 sq ft 130 cfm
300 sq ft 195 cfm
400 sq ft 260 cfm
500 sq ft 325 cfm
600 sq ft 390 cfm

Use the table as a minimum estimate, then check the smoke-CADR rule and your ceiling height. A room that is 300 square feet with a high ceiling, frequent outdoor infiltration, or a desire for faster cleanup warrants more capacity than the 195-cfm minimum.

Choose the filtration stack for the pollutants you actually face

Mechanical and HEPA filtration for particles

HEPA and other pleated mechanical filters physically capture particles as air passes through the filter media. For city PM2.5, prioritize the measured smoke CADR, the room area it covers, and the speed at which that rating is achieved. “HEPA” without a meaningful airflow rating does not tell you how quickly a room will be cleaned.

Check that replacement filters are available for the exact model. A filter that is difficult to source can turn a capable machine into an expensive fan once the media loads with dust.

Activated carbon for gases and odors

Particle CADR does not validate removal of gases. If your concern includes cooking odors, solvent smells, VOCs or other gaseous pollutants, look for activated carbon or another sorbent specifically described for those gases. EPA notes that thick filters containing a substantial amount of carbon can be effective; a thin, deodorizing layer may offer limited capacity. Inspect the label for the target gases rather than assuming that any carbon sheet handles all of them.

There is no widely used, consumer-wide gas-filter performance rating comparable to particle CADR. Treat broad claims such as “removes all VOCs” cautiously, and ask what gas, concentration, test method and carbon quantity the claim represents.

Avoid ozone-generating cleaners

Do not select a device that intentionally produces ozone. EPA warns that some ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, plasma cleaners and UV systems may emit ozone. In its smoke guidance, EPA does not recommend electronic cleaners, photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), hydroxyl generators or devices with UV components for smoke removal because they are not designed to remove particles reliably and may produce ozone or other pollutants.

How to verify performance claims

The AHAM Verifide mark indicates independent testing for removal of tobacco smoke, pollen and dust, along with compliance with California Air Resources Board ozone limits. AHAM’s searchable directory provides model and room-size information through its portable-room-air-cleaner selection guide (December 4, 2024).

Use independent verification as a check on published particle claims, not as proof that a machine removes every urban pollutant or gas. When comparing two units, record the following values from their documentation:

  • Smoke CADR and the fan speed used for that rating.
  • Suggested room size and whether it assumes an 8-foot ceiling.
  • Whether an AHAM-verified room-size listing exists.
  • Filter construction, especially the amount and purpose of activated carbon.
  • Noise at the speed needed to reach your target CADR.
  • Replacement-filter model, availability and the manufacturer’s replacement instructions.
  • Power use, physical dimensions, weight and the clearance needed around air inlets and outlets.

Do not compare a manufacturer’s “maximum room size” directly with another company’s smoke CADR unless you know the assumptions behind both numbers. A tested airflow figure tied to a defined room is more useful than an unsupported square-foot marketing claim.

Noise, placement and operating speed determine real cleaning

Place the purifier in the room where people spend the most time, with unobstructed space around its intake and outlet. Do not wedge it behind furniture, curtains or a door. Keep doors and windows closed during a smoke episode when it is safe to do so; otherwise outdoor air can continuously overwhelm the filtered airflow.

Higher fan speeds and longer run times generally filter more air. For smoke episodes, EPA advises running a portable cleaner continuously at its highest fan setting. In ordinary urban conditions, a lower setting may be acceptable if it still delivers enough clean air for the room, but a silent setting that moves very little air cannot substitute for adequate CADR.

Noise is therefore a sizing issue, not merely a comfort preference. If you need a quiet overnight setting, choose a unit with enough headroom that its lower speed still provides useful airflow. A larger purifier operated below maximum can be more practical than a small purifier that must run loudly all the time.

Maintenance: keep the airflow and budget realistic

Replace loaded filters

As filters collect dust and particles, resistance rises and airflow can fall. A loaded filter works poorly. EPA does not specify one universal replacement interval for every portable purifier; follow the model’s instructions and inspect the filter more often during heavy pollution. AHAM notes that prolonged smoke operation may require more frequent replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace or clean a filter when the manufacturer instructs you to, when it is visibly dirty, or when the purifier indicates a service condition. During smoke events, EPA advises inspecting filters and cleaning or replacing them when dirty or smelling. Do not wash a filter unless the manufacturer explicitly says it is washable.

Include operating costs in the decision

Before buying, identify the exact replacement filter and its expected service guidance, then check that it is sold through a reliable channel. Add electricity use and filter replacements to the ownership calculation. A cheaper machine that requires an unavailable or unusually expensive filter may cost more to keep effective than a higher-capacity unit with dependable supplies.

Keep airflow paths clear

  • Leave the clearance specified by the manufacturer around intake and exhaust grilles.
  • Keep rugs, clothing and loose curtains away from the intake.
  • Do not cover the unit or place objects on its outlet.
  • Check prefilters, if present, and clean them only as directed.

When an HVAC filter is the better complement

If your home has a forced-air heating or cooling system, EPA recommends using at least a MERV 13 filter—or the highest rating the system can accommodate. The filter must fit snugly, and the system fan must run for the filter to clean air. A filter that is too restrictive for the equipment can reduce airflow or cause mechanical problems, so confirm compatibility with the system manufacturer or a qualified technician when uncertain.

HVAC filtration can distribute particle removal across multiple rooms, while a portable purifier can provide higher, targeted airflow in a bedroom or other occupied space. They are complementary options, not interchangeable ratings: MERV describes HVAC filter efficiency under its test conditions, whereas smoke CADR describes a portable cleaner’s delivered particle-cleaning airflow.

A practical buying process

  1. Define the pollutants. For PM2.5, dust and smoke-like particles, start with mechanical filtration. Add a substantial, gas-targeted sorbent only if gases or odors matter to your situation.
  2. Measure the complete area. Multiply length by width, combine connected open areas, and adjust upward for ceilings above 8 feet.
  3. Set a CADR target. Use EPA’s minimum table and the smoke-CADR rule of at least two-thirds of room area. In severe wildfire-smoke conditions, AHAM’s guidance is to match smoke CADR to room area.
  4. Check the operating speed. Confirm the published CADR is measured at a speed you can tolerate for the required run time, and account for the fact that quieter settings move less air.
  5. Verify the claim. Look for AHAM Verifide information and compare the listed room size and smoke CADR. Treat the mark as a performance check for tested particle claims, not a gas-removal guarantee.
  6. Inspect the filter system. Confirm the exact replacement-filter part number, carbon quantity or target gases, replacement instructions and expected availability.
  7. Plan placement and upkeep. Reserve unobstructed floor space, decide where the unit will run most, and budget for electricity and replacement filters.
  8. Reject ozone-generating designs. Avoid products that intentionally produce ozone or rely on technologies EPA does not recommend for reliable smoke-particle removal.

Common scenarios and the right interpretation

Small bedroom near a busy road

Measure the bedroom rather than relying on the manufacturer’s generic “small room” label. Select a smoke CADR meeting the appropriate table value or two-thirds rule, then use the unit with doors and windows managed to limit infiltration when outdoor conditions are poor. A carbon stage may help with odors, but it does not replace particle filtration.

Open-plan apartment

Add the living, dining and kitchen areas that are physically connected. If the combined area exceeds one purifier’s practical capacity, use multiple units or place the largest unit where occupants spend the most time. High ceilings require additional headroom beyond the 8-foot estimates.

Wildfire smoke entering the city

Use the more demanding context: AHAM advises a smoke CADR equal to the room’s area for heavily smoke-affected conditions. EPA’s smoke guidance recommends continuous operation at the highest fan setting and keeping doors and windows closed when safe. Check the filter during the episode because heavy loading can shorten its useful life.

Odors or solvent fumes without much visible dust

A HEPA-only purifier addresses particles, not gases. Seek a product with substantial activated carbon or another sorbent that names the gases it targets. Because no common gas-CADR system exists, scrutinize the manufacturer’s test details and avoid assuming that a small carbon pad provides broad VOC control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limits you should keep in mind

  • CADR is a particle metric; it does not certify gas removal.
  • A room-size estimate cannot account for every building’s leakage, ceiling height, pollutant source or outdoor concentration.
  • Running a purifier only occasionally may leave long periods of unfiltered exposure; longer operation generally delivers more filtered air.
  • A dirty or obstructed filter reduces useful airflow.
  • Filtration cannot replace source control and ventilation with clean outdoor air when appropriate.

For official explanations of filter types, operation and limitations, consult the EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home. For smoke-specific operating advice, see EPA Indoor Air Filtration.
