How to Choose an Air Purifier for Smoke, Dust, and Pollution

Choose by the air problem and the room’s real size, then compare the right clean-air delivery rate. For wildfire smoke and other fine particles, use a purifier’s tobacco-smoke CADR and aim for at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. Check dust CADR separately if household dust matters. If pollution includes odors or gases, add a substantial activated-carbon stage; particle CADR does not measure gas removal. Avoid ozone-generating products, and consider a compatible MERV 13-or-higher HVAC filter when a forced-air system can safely use one.

Start with the decision that matters most

Write down three things before comparing products: the total area the cleaner must serve, the pollutants you need to reduce, and the fan speed you can tolerate for hours at a time. A purifier that is too small will move too little air; one that is powerful but noisy may be left off. Filter cost and availability determine whether you can keep it operating through a long smoke event.

  • Wildfire smoke, PM2.5, cooking smoke: prioritize the tobacco-smoke CADR.
  • Visible household dust: check the dust CADR as well as the smoke rating.
  • Odors and some gases: look for a large activated-carbon or other gas-adsorbent filter. Do not treat a particle CADR as a gas-removal rating.
  • Several connected rooms: size for the entire open-plan area, or use separate units so each room receives enough clean air.
  • Forced-air home: a compatible MERV 13-or-higher HVAC filter can complement or, in some cases, substitute for room units while the fan is running.

No residential air cleaner removes every pollutant. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states: “No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.”

What CADR means and which number to use

Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) combines how quickly a device removes particles with how much air it processes. The EPA explains that a higher CADR means more particles filtered and a larger area served. Portable-unit CADR is generally measured at the highest fan setting, so a published room-size claim does not prove that the same performance is available on a quiet setting.

Tobacco-smoke CADR for fine smoke

Tobacco-smoke CADR is the most useful of the common particle ratings for wildfire smoke and fine PM2.5. Smoke particles are generally smaller than the particles represented by dust and pollen tests. For smoke episodes, compare this number first rather than relying on a generic “up to X square feet” label.

Dust CADR for larger household particles

Dust CADR describes removal of larger particles than the tobacco-smoke test. It is relevant to settled household dust, lint and similar debris. A unit can have a strong smoke CADR but a different dust CADR, so check both when dust is a major reason for buying.

CADR is not a gas or odor score

CADR applies to particles. It says nothing by itself about smoke odor, solvent vapors, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde or other gases. For those pollutants, look for an adsorbent medium such as activated carbon and inspect how much material is present. A thin carbon coating may have limited capacity compared with a filter containing a substantial mass of carbon. There is no widely used, standardized portable-device rating system for gas-filter performance, so treat unqualified odor-removal claims cautiously. See the EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.

Calculate the purifier size for your space

Measure the complete area

  1. Measure the length and width of every room the purifier is expected to serve.
  2. Multiply length by width to get square feet. Add the rooms together when doors stay open and one unit is intended to clean the combined area.
  3. Include the full open-plan living, dining and kitchen area; do not size only for the corner where the unit sits.
  4. Note ceiling height. EPA’s common estimates assume an eight-foot ceiling. Taller ceilings contain more air and require more capacity or longer operation.

For an irregular floor plan, divide it into rectangles, calculate each rectangle, and add the results. If doors are usually closed, size each closed room separately instead of assuming air will mix evenly through the home.

EPA’s general CADR estimates

The following figures are EPA estimates for an eight-foot ceiling. They are a planning guide, not a guarantee of a specific model’s performance at a low-noise setting.

Area served Estimated minimum CADR
100 sq ft 65 cfm
200 sq ft 130 cfm
300 sq ft 195 cfm
400 sq ft 260 cfm
500 sq ft 325 cfm
600 sq ft 390 cfm

When a listing gives several CADR values, use the tobacco-smoke value for fine smoke and the dust value for dust. If the product lists only a broad room-size number and no CADR, comparisons are less reliable.

Use the wildfire-smoke rule

For wildfire smoke, EPA advises a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. A 120-square-foot room therefore calls for at least 80 tobacco-smoke CADR. This is a minimum; frequent heavy smoke, an open doorway, air leakage or a ceiling higher than eight feet can justify stepping up to a larger unit. EPA’s guidance is available in Preparing for Smoke and Heat.

For a 300-square-foot room, the two-thirds calculation is 200 tobacco-smoke CADR. If the unit will run on a medium setting rather than its tested maximum, choose more capacity so the needed airflow is available at that setting.

Match the filter technology to the pollution

Mechanical particle filtration

Mechanical filters capture particles by forcing air through fibers. A HEPA-style or other high-efficiency particle filter is appropriate for smoke particles, dust and pollen, provided the whole unit moves enough air. Filter efficiency without adequate airflow can still result in too little clean air reaching the room.

Activated carbon for gases and odors

Carbon works by adsorption, holding some gas molecules on its surface. It can help with odors and certain volatile compounds, but performance depends on the gas, contact time, airflow and carbon quantity. Choose a design with a visibly substantial carbon bed or cartridge when gas removal is important. Replace it when odor breakthrough occurs or according to the manufacturer’s schedule; a particle filter can remain visually clean while carbon capacity is exhausted.

Technologies to avoid for smoke

EPA recommends cleaners that produce little or no ozone and points consumers to the current California Air Resources Board (CARB) certified-device list when checking ozone emissions. Do not select an ozone generator as an air-cleaning strategy. EPA also does not recommend photocatalytic oxidation, hydroxyl generators or UV-component devices for smoke removal: they are not designed to remove smoke particles and may create harmful pollutants. The agency’s updated guidance is at Indoor Air Filtration.

Ionization features deserve the same caution. If a device uses ionization, verify its ozone status and make sure the mechanical filter and CADR independently meet your needs. A marketing label such as “advanced purification” is not a substitute for a measured particle CADR.

Compare a room purifier with central HVAC filtration

A forced-air HVAC system can filter air throughout the ducted area, but only when the system fan moves air. EPA advises using at least MERV 13, or the highest rating the system can safely handle, with advice from the equipment manufacturer or a qualified technician. Higher resistance can reduce airflow or stress a system that was not designed for it.

  • Confirm the filter’s dimensions and airflow direction match the equipment.
  • Check the furnace or air-handler manual before moving above the currently specified MERV rating.
  • Run the fan as practical during a smoke event, balancing filtration against energy use and comfort.
  • Use portable units in bedrooms or other areas that the central system does not circulate effectively.

An HVAC filter does not clean a room while the fan is off, and it cannot compensate for a system that does not exchange air with a closed room. Portable units provide local, continuous cleaning and can supplement central filtration.

Account for noise, placement and operating cost

Noise and usable fan speed

Manufacturers commonly quote noise at several settings, but the setting associated with the advertised CADR is often the highest and loudest. Compare sound levels at the speed you can realistically use overnight or while working. A larger unit operated at a lower speed may deliver the same effective airflow more quietly than a small unit run at maximum.

Filter replacement

Check the exact replacement-filter part number, price and availability before buying. Smoke events load filters faster than normal household use; a filter that might last many months in ordinary conditions can require earlier replacement after prolonged wildfire exposure. Keep a spare particle filter during fire season if local supply is unreliable. Carbon stages may need replacement on a different schedule from the particle filter.

Placement and airflow

Leave clearance around the intake and outlet specified by the manufacturer. Do not push the unit behind furniture, curtains or under a desk where airflow is blocked. Place it in the room where people spend time, close doors and windows during severe outdoor smoke when safe, and avoid positioning the outlet so it blows directly across a dirty surface.

A practical buying procedure

  1. Define the pollutant. Decide whether the priority is fine smoke, dust, odors and gases, or a combination.
  2. Measure the area. Add all connected spaces the unit must serve and note ceiling height.
  3. Set the smoke target. Multiply floor area by two-thirds to obtain a minimum tobacco-smoke CADR for wildfire smoke.
  4. Check dust CADR. If dust is also important, compare the published dust rating rather than assuming the smoke number covers it.
  5. Verify gas capability. Choose a substantial activated-carbon stage for odor or gas concerns; do not infer gas removal from particle CADR.
  6. Reject ozone-focused designs. Prefer mechanical filtration and verify little-or-no-ozone status through CARB’s current certification list.
  7. Compare real operating settings. Look at noise, airflow and controls at medium or low speeds, not only the maximum-setting specification.
  8. Price ownership. Add the cost of compatible replacement filters and estimate how often smoke exposure may shorten their life.
  9. Plan placement. Ensure unobstructed intake and outlet airflow in the room where cleaning is needed.

DIY box-fan cleaners: an emergency or budget option

A box fan paired with high-efficiency HVAC filters can provide temporary particle cleaning when commercial units are unavailable or unaffordable. Filter orientation, sealing and airflow design matter. A cardboard shroud around the fan can reduce recirculation around the filter edges.

In EPA chamber tests, a one-filter design using a 1-inch MERV 13 filter measured 111 ± 1 cfm. Adding a cardboard shroud raised the result to 156 ± 4 cfm. A 4-inch filter with a shroud measured 248 ± 15 cfm; two 1-inch filters with a shroud measured 263 ± 22 cfm; and a four-filter Corsi-Rosenthal box measured 401 ± 31 cfm. EPA reported a 40% CADR increase from the shroud in its tested configuration. These are chamber measurements, not promised results in a particular home.

Build and use one safely

  1. Use a sound, appropriately sized box fan and high-efficiency filters with the airflow arrows pointing toward the fan.
  2. Seal gaps between filters and the fan frame so air cannot bypass the filter media.
  3. Add a rigid cardboard shroud on the outlet side when the design allows it.
  4. Keep the assembly stable and away from water, curtains and children.
  5. Inspect filters frequently during smoke; replace them when loaded, damaged or difficult to use.

A DIY cleaner does not automatically provide gas removal, quiet operation or a verified ozone profile. Treat it as a particle-filtration option and keep normal electrical and fire-safety precautions in place.

How to run a purifier during a smoke event

Before smoke arrives

  • Install a fresh, correctly fitted filter.
  • Close windows and doors when outdoor smoke is hazardous, while maintaining safe ventilation for combustion appliances.
  • Move the purifier into the bedroom or main occupied room if you have only one unit.
  • Confirm that replacement filters are available locally or can be ordered.

During heavy smoke

  • Run the unit continuously or for long periods at the highest tolerable speed.
  • Use the smoke CADR target, not the room-size label alone, to judge adequacy.
  • Keep indoor activities that generate particles, such as frying or candle burning, to a minimum.
  • Watch for a rising noise level, reduced airflow or a loaded-filter indicator, which can signal that the filter needs attention.

After the event

Continue filtration until indoor odors and particle levels have returned to normal. Replace a heavily smoke-loaded filter before the next event, even if the scheduled interval has not elapsed.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by advertised square feet alone

Problem: The label may assume an eight-foot ceiling and maximum fan speed. Correction: compare tobacco-smoke CADR with the two-thirds room-area rule, then allow extra capacity for high ceilings and heavy smoke.

Assuming HEPA removes every pollutant

Problem: Particle filters do not automatically remove gases or odors. Correction: add substantial activated carbon when gas-phase pollution matters and keep expectations specific to the gases involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a purifier with an ozone-generating feature

Problem: Ozone can itself harm indoor air quality, and ozone-oriented technologies do not replace particle filtration. Correction: select a mechanical filter with little-or-no-ozone status and verify certification information.

Installing a restrictive HVAC filter without checking compatibility

Problem: A filter that is too restrictive can reduce system airflow. Correction: confirm the highest compatible MERV rating with the manual, manufacturer or technician.

Ignoring replacement-filter supply

Problem: A purifier that cannot be kept supplied is ineffective during the next smoke event. Correction: check part numbers, recurring prices and local availability before purchase, and keep a spare when practical.

Quick selection examples

Small bedroom during wildfire smoke

A 120-square-foot bedroom needs at least 80 tobacco-smoke CADR under EPA’s two-thirds rule. Choose a unit that meets or exceeds that value at a tolerable operating setting, and use a larger model if the ceiling is high or smoke is frequent and intense.

Dusty 400-square-foot living area

For a room of this size, EPA’s general estimate is 260 cfm. Compare both dust CADR and tobacco-smoke CADR, because the household may need larger-particle removal every day and fine-particle protection during smoke events.

Open-plan home with cooking odors

Measure the entire connected floor area rather than the kitchen alone. Select particle CADR for the full space and add a purifier with a substantial carbon stage if odors are a priority. Carbon capacity is not represented by the CADR number.

Home with a compatible forced-air system

Install the highest MERV rating the system supports, ideally MERV 13 or higher, and run the fan during smoke periods. Add a portable unit in bedrooms or rooms that receive little ducted airflow.
