Choose a portable air purifier by its tobacco-smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR), then match that rating to the floor area and ceiling height it must serve. For a room with an 8-foot ceiling, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates 65 cubic feet per minute (cfm) of CADR for every 100 square feet. If wildfire smoke or another fine-particle event is the concern, choose a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet; for frequent heavy smoke, matching CADR to the room area is a reasonable higher target.

After sizing, verify that the cleaner does not intentionally produce ozone, determine whether it has meaningful gas-adsorbing media as well as particle filtration, and compare noise, energy use, placement requirements and replacement-filter availability. A purifier only helps while air can pass through it, so the best specification is one you can operate for long periods.

Start with the room and the right CADR

CADR is the amount of filtered air a cleaner delivers for a particular particle category. A higher tobacco-smoke CADR means more clean air delivered against the smallest particles in the standard smoke, dust and pollen categories. It is normally measured at the highest fan speed, so treat the published number as the performance ceiling, not necessarily the quiet setting you will use every day.

Measure the length and width of the room and multiply them. Include connected areas in an open plan if one unit is expected to clean that entire space. The EPA’s general portable-cleaner chart assumes an 8-foot ceiling and gives these estimated minimum CADR values for particle removal:

Floor area Estimated minimum CADR How to use the figure
100 sq ft 65 cfm Small bedroom, office or nursery with an 8-foot ceiling
200 sq ft 130 cfm Use a higher rating if doors remain open to other rooms
300 sq ft 195 cfm Typical larger bedroom or compact living room
400 sq ft 260 cfm Living room or studio area at the chart’s ceiling height
500 sq ft 325 cfm Increase capacity for tall ceilings or substantial smoke entry
600 sq ft 390 cfm Consider multiple units in a divided or irregular space

These are estimates, not a guarantee that a room will reach a particular particle concentration. The EPA’s sizing guidance is available in its guide to air cleaners in the home.

Adjust for ceiling height

The chart is based on 8-foot ceilings. A room with a 10-foot ceiling contains about 25 percent more air than the same floor area with an 8-foot ceiling, so select proportionally more CADR. As a practical rule, multiply the chart value by ceiling height divided by 8. This is a sizing adjustment, not a laboratory guarantee.

Handle open floor plans and several rooms

For a connected 400-square-foot kitchen, dining and living area, size for the combined area rather than the room where the purifier sits. If doors, walls or a long hallway prevent good air exchange, one large rating may not clean every room evenly. Two or more units can provide better coverage: add their tobacco-smoke CADRs and place them where people spend time, with unobstructed intake and exhaust.

Use tobacco-smoke CADR for PM2.5 and wildfire smoke

Fine particles such as PM2.5 are the particulate concern in wildfire smoke. The EPA’s cleaner-room guidance says to choose a device with a tobacco-smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. For example, a 120-square-foot room calls for at least 80 cfm of tobacco-smoke CADR. This rule is specific to the wildfire-smoke use case; it is not a universal replacement for the general sizing chart.

People who face frequent, heavy smoke can choose a more conservative target: a tobacco-smoke CADR approximately equal to the room’s area in square feet. In a 300-square-foot room, that means about 300 cfm rather than the 200 cfm implied by the two-thirds rule. Use the higher target when smoke is severe, windows cannot be sealed well, the ceiling is high, or the purifier must operate at a quieter setting than its maximum.

Why the smoke rating matters

CADR is category-specific. Tobacco-smoke CADR is useful for fine particles because that test category represents smaller particles than the common dust and pollen categories. Do not compare a purifier’s pollen number with a room-size target intended for tobacco smoke, and do not treat a high CADR as a general pollution score.

Know what the filter can and cannot remove

Mechanical particle filtration

A portable HEPA-style or other mechanical filter captures particles as air passes through the filter. CADR combines the filter’s particle-cleaning capability with the volume of air moved, which is why both filter design and fan airflow matter. A thick filter, a well-sealed housing and a fan that can maintain airflow under resistance generally support useful performance, but only the tested CADR tells you how much clean air the complete unit delivers.

Gases and odors require a different medium

Particle CADR does not establish effectiveness against gases or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For those pollutants, look for activated carbon or another gas-specific absorbent. The amount and thickness of that material matter; a thin carbon coating may have limited capacity compared with a filter containing substantial sorbent media. A purifier can therefore be excellent for smoke particles while doing little for a solvent odor or other gas.

No cleaner removes everything

The EPA states, “No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.” Filtration should supplement source control and ventilation decisions, not justify continued indoor smoking, combustion or chemical use. Close windows during a smoke event when outdoor air is worse, eliminate indoor particle sources where possible, and address mold or leaks at their source.

Check ozone emissions before buying

Avoid devices that intentionally generate ozone, including ozone generators and some ionizing designs. Ozone is itself an air pollutant and can irritate the lungs. For wildfire-smoke use, EPA guidance points consumers to cleaners certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), whose certification limits ozone emissions. Confirm that the exact model is certified rather than assuming every product in a category qualifies.

Mechanical filtration and activated-carbon adsorption do not require ozone generation. If a unit advertises ionization, plasma, electrostatic or “active” purification, read its ozone disclosure and certification status before operating that feature. A removable or switchable ionizer is not automatically harmless; leave it off unless the product’s emissions have been independently limited and the setting is appropriate for your space.

Compare the alternatives to a single portable unit

Approach Where it works best Advantages Limitations to check
Portable cleaner with known tobacco-smoke CADR One room or a defined open area Published, comparable airflow rating; can target the room people occupy Limited to the room or air that reaches it; filter and electricity costs recur
Several portable cleaners Large, divided or multi-story homes CADRs add when units serve the same air volume; each unit can be placed near occupants More noise, outlets, filters and controls to manage
Central HVAC with a compatible MERV 13-or-higher filter Multiple rooms connected to one ducted system Can filter more of the home while the blower runs Must be compatible with the system; filtration occurs only when the system operates; a central filter does not guarantee equal cleaning in every room
DIY fan-and-filter cleaner Budget-constrained, temporary smoke response Can be assembled from commonly available fans, filters and cardboard CADR may be unknown; sealing, filter resistance and design quality determine results; electrical and tip-over safety are your responsibility

EPA generally prefers commercial cleaners with a known CADR when one is suitable, because the rating indicates the room size the unit can serve and standardized models offer more predictable reported performance. A compatible HVAC filter can complement portable units, but do not install a high-resistance filter unless your HVAC manufacturer or technician confirms compatibility.

Evaluate noise, energy and maintenance as part of performance

Noise determines the speed you will actually use

Because CADR is usually reported at maximum speed, compare the sound level at the setting you can tolerate while sleeping, working or watching television. A very high-rated unit run on its lowest setting may deliver less clean air than a moderately sized unit run continuously at a stronger setting. Fan noise, rattling and control-light brightness are practical reasons people stop using a cleaner.

Energy use rises with size and runtime

ENERGY STAR’s comparison page lists estimated annual energy savings for its program context of 175 kWh for 100 square feet, 176 kWh for 200, 189 kWh for 300, 252 kWh for 400, 316 kWh for 500 and 379 kWh for 600. These are program-page estimates, not a forecast of your electricity bill or a rating for a particular model. Your result depends on wattage, fan speed, local electricity rates and how many hours the cleaner runs. Larger models generally use more energy, so match capacity to the area rather than relying only on an oversized coverage claim.

Budget for filters before choosing a model

Check the exact replacement-filter part number, price and availability before buying the purifier. A filter that is difficult to obtain can turn a well-sized machine into an idle box. Smoke events load filters faster than ordinary operation, so keep a spare when wildfire smoke is seasonal. Follow the manual’s replacement indicator or schedule; vacuuming a disposable particle filter is not a substitute for replacing it when it is loaded.

(Note: For significant amounts of pet hair on floors or fabric surfaces, we recommend use other cleaning products.)
  • 3-Stage Advanced Filtration: Our air filter combines a high-efficiency purification filter with 3 layers to can effectively filter out the impurities in the air. This high-performance system delivers thorough air purification, creating a healthier living environment for you and your loved one. (Note: The filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 6 months, and must not be cleaned with water or other liquids.)

Keep airflow unobstructed

Place the unit where its intake and outlet are not blocked by walls, curtains, furniture or bedding. Follow the manual’s clearance instructions, keep it on a stable surface, and avoid locations where water can splash into it. In a cleaner-air room, close the door and windows when outdoor smoke is high so the purifier is not overwhelmed by constant infiltration.

Operate a purifier effectively during wildfire smoke

  1. Choose the room. Select a room with few windows and doors, ideally where occupants can spend the smoke episode. Close openings and reduce indoor particle sources.
  2. Use a CARB-certified portable cleaner. Verify certification for the exact model and disable any optional ozone-producing feature.
  3. Run it continuously when feasible. EPA guidance emphasizes the highest fan setting that occupants can tolerate during heavy smoke. If maximum speed is too loud, a lower setting still filters air but delivers less CADR.
  4. Keep the intake and exhaust clear. Follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions and do not push the unit against a wall or under furniture.
  5. Check the filter during and after the event. Replace it sooner if it is visibly loaded, the airflow falls, or the manufacturer’s indicator calls for service.
  6. Use HVAC strategically. If your system accepts a MERV 13-or-higher filter, run the blower as recommended by the system manufacturer. Remember that ducted filtration helps only while the system circulates air.

Multiple portable cleaners can be a practical alternative to continuous central operation, especially when people occupy separate rooms. Their combined CADR matters only where their cleaned air actually mixes; placing every unit in one corner does not clean distant bedrooms equally.

DIY filter-fan cleaners: what the measurements show

A DIY cleaner can cost less, but its performance depends strongly on the fan, filter thickness, number of filters, sealing and shroud. In controlled EPA measurements of specific designs, the following wildfire-smoke CADRs were recorded:

Test design Measured wildfire-smoke CADR
Box fan with one 1-inch MERV 13 filter 111 ± 1 cfm
Same one-filter design with a cardboard shroud 156 ± 4 cfm
One 4-inch MERV 13 filter with a shroud 248 ± 15 cfm
Two 1-inch filters with a shroud 263 ± 22 cfm
Four-filter Corsi-Rosenthal box with a shroud 401 ± 31 cfm

These results apply to EPA’s test setup and the listed designs, not to every fan, filter or home-built assembly. The increase with a shroud, thicker filter and multiple filters demonstrates why an apparently similar build can perform differently. Use a fan with a suitable safety grille, secure the filters so they cannot fall, keep the assembly away from moisture and never defeat electrical safety features. EPA’s DIY guidance is available at DIY Air Cleaners.

A practical buying checklist

  • Area: Calculate the room or connected open area and note the ceiling height.
  • Smoke CADR: Use at least 65 cfm per 100 square feet for the EPA’s 8-foot-ceiling estimate; for wildfire smoke, use at least two-thirds of room area in square feet, with more for heavy smoke.
  • Particle category: Compare tobacco-smoke CADR with tobacco-smoke CADR, not pollen or dust values.
  • Filtration scope: Decide whether you need only particles or also gas and odor adsorption; look for substantial activated carbon when gases matter.
  • Ozone: Avoid intentional ozone generation and verify CARB certification for wildfire-smoke use.
  • Operating setting: Check noise at the speed that delivers usable airflow, not only the quietest mode.
  • Placement: Confirm clear intake and exhaust paths and the manufacturer’s required clearance.
  • Filters: Verify replacement availability, expected interval and smoke-event replacement needs.
  • Energy: Compare wattage and expected runtime; larger is not automatically better if it is rarely operated.
  • Alternatives: Consider several room units, a compatible HVAC filter or a carefully built DIY cleaner when the layout or budget makes one portable unit unsuitable.

Troubleshoot common results

The room still smells smoky

Smoke odor can come from gases and materials that have absorbed smoke, not just airborne particles. Confirm that the purifier has substantial activated carbon if gas removal is important, close infiltration paths, and clean smoke-contaminated surfaces. A high particle CADR alone does not prove odor removal.

Air quality improves only near the machine

Recheck sizing for the full area, ceiling height and open doors. Move the purifier so air can circulate around it, or add a second unit in the occupied room. A single unit cannot be expected to deliver equal cleaning through closed doors and a long hallway.

The purifier is too loud to run

Use a lower speed continuously if that is the setting occupants will tolerate, but recognize that CADR falls with airflow. A second, quieter unit can provide more total usable CADR than one loud unit that is frequently switched off.

Airflow has dropped

Inspect the filter and intake for loading or blockage, then replace the filter according to the manual. Smoke can shorten filter life. Do not operate a clogged unit in the hope that the original CADR still applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The HVAC system struggles after a filter change

Turn to the equipment manual or a qualified HVAC professional to confirm filter size and resistance compatibility. A MERV 13-or-higher filter is useful only when the system can move air safely through it.

Bottom line for choosing

Write down the area, ceiling height and pollution scenario before comparing products. Select a tobacco-smoke CADR that meets the room calculation, increase capacity for heavy smoke or open layouts, and choose multiple units when one cannot distribute clean air effectively. Then eliminate ozone-producing options, distinguish particle filtration from gas adsorption, and verify noise, energy use and replacement-filter logistics. Those operating details determine whether the purifier will deliver its rated clean air throughout the hours when particulate pollution is actually present.
