For smoke and haze, choose a mechanical air cleaner with a published tobacco-smoke Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. Measure the space the purifier must serve, then size up for high ceilings, frequent heavy smoke or an open-plan layout. Favor a HEPA or other pleated mechanical filter, check that the unit is CARB-certified, and compare noise and replacement-filter costs before buying.
How big an air purifier do you need?
Use the tobacco-smoke CADR—not a room-size claim alone—to compare a purifier’s ability to deliver filtered air for smoke particles. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet for wildfire smoke. This is a sizing rule of thumb, not a guarantee of a particular indoor air concentration.

- Measure the area. Multiply the room’s length by its width in feet. For an open-plan space, include the full area the cleaner is expected to serve.
- Find the tobacco-smoke CADR. Smoke CADR is the relevant rating for this purpose; do not substitute a dust or pollen CADR.
- Compare it with the room area. For a 120-square-foot room, EPA’s example calls for a smoke CADR of at least 80.
- Allow for conditions that increase the load. Choose more capacity for ceilings higher than eight feet, frequent heavy smoke or a large, connected space. Two or more well-placed units may make more sense than one undersized purifier.
For frequent heavy smoke, EPA reports that the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) recommends a CADR equal to the room area. For example, that means a CADR of 120 for a 120-square-foot room. The higher target is a more conservative choice for that use case.

Choose mechanical particle filtration
A mechanical cleaner pulls air through a filter that traps particles. HEPA and other pleated mechanical filters are options EPA identifies for smoke; higher-efficiency mechanical filters trap smoke particles without producing ozone. Check the unit’s tobacco-smoke CADR as well as its filter type: the filter designation alone does not tell you whether the complete unit is large enough for your room.

Avoid ozone generators and be cautious with electronic cleaners
EPA does not recommend electronic air cleaners for smoke removal because their effectiveness for smoke particles is unclear and they may produce ozone. Its wildfire guidance also does not recommend photocatalytic oxidation, hydroxyl generators or devices with UV for smoke removal. EPA warns against operating ozone generators in occupied spaces: ozone can irritate airways, and at concentrations that do not exceed public-health standards it does not effectively remove viruses, bacteria, mold or other biological pollutants. For wildfire filtration, EPA advises using CARB-certified air cleaners, which produce little or no ozone.
What should you compare before choosing a portable purifier?
- Smoke CADR: Compare the published tobacco-smoke figure with the area you need to clean. A room-size label without an identified CADR is harder to assess.
- Coverage and ceiling height: Check what room conditions the size claim assumes; a label based on an eight-foot ceiling may not fit a taller room.
- Ozone status: Look for CARB certification and avoid ozone-generating devices.
- Noise at the setting you will use: During smoke events, EPA advises running a portable cleaner continuously at its highest fan setting if possible. A unit that is too noisy for the intended room may be difficult to operate that way.
- Replacement filters: Confirm that compatible filters are available and consider their cost. Smoke may require more frequent replacement, so inspect filters and replace them as needed.
EPA does not certify or recommend specific brands or models. Verify current specifications, certification, noise information and filter availability for any model you consider.

Can an HVAC filter help with smoke?
If your home has forced-air heating or cooling, a compatible central filter can provide filtration while the system fan runs. EPA recommends MERV 13 or higher—or the highest rating the system can accommodate. A higher-rated filter is not automatically a suitable replacement: if you are unsure whether your system can handle it, check with the manufacturer or an HVAC professional.

Central filtration depends on the fan’s operating time. EPA notes that multiple well-placed portable or DIY cleaners may be as effective and may cost less to operate than continuously running central air filtration with a high-efficiency filter, depending on the setup.

Is a DIY box-fan filter a reasonable alternative?
A box fan fitted with MERV 13 filters can reduce smoke particles, but its CADR depends substantially on the design and construction. EPA generally prefers commercial cleaners with known CADR when predictable room sizing matters. In EPA’s controlled-chamber tests, the following DIY designs produced these smoke CADR results:

These figures are EPA laboratory results for the listed designs, not guaranteed performance for every build. In the tested design, adding a shroud increased CADR by 40%; construction and components can change results.

How should you run a purifier during smoky conditions?
- Run the portable cleaner continuously on its highest fan setting if possible.
- When outdoor air is smoky, keep windows and doors closed where practical.
- Reduce indoor particle sources such as candles, smoking, vaping and aerosols.
- Inspect the filter for loading and replace it when needed; smoke can call for earlier replacement.
These steps support filtration, but they do not change the need to choose a cleaner with sufficient smoke CADR for the space.
