Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a Delhi bedroom, choose a powered-fan purifier with a genuine HEPA (or equivalent fine-particle) filter, enough CADR for the room volume, and a substantial activated-carbon stage if smoke or odours matter. Size it for at least about 20% more coverage than the measured room, check replacement-filter availability in Delhi, and avoid ozone-generating designs.
Start with the room’s floor area and ceiling height, then compare CADR rather than relying on a large marketing area. Delhi’s particulate pollution changes by location and time, so a purifier that can clean the room at a useful fan speed during winter peaks is more important than an attractive app or an optimistic maximum-area claim.

What a Delhi home purifier needs to remove
Delhi and the wider National Capital Region face a mixture of airborne particles and gases. The Central Pollution Control Board’s NCR AQI system reports both PM2.5 and PM10, using averages from specific monitoring locations. Those readings are location-specific and can change quickly, so an AQI number from one station is not a guarantee of the air at your window.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →PM2.5 deserves particular attention because the particles are small enough to penetrate deeply into the lungs. PM10 also matters because it includes larger dust particles that can enter a home through windows, doors and balconies. A purifier’s particle-removal performance is primarily a question of its clean-air delivery rate and fine-particle filter, not its brand, app or display.

Gases and odours are a separate problem. Traffic exhaust, cooking smells, solvents and some volatile organic compounds (VOCs) require an adsorbent material, normally activated carbon. A thin carbon-coated sheet may reduce a smell briefly, but a thicker or larger carbon bed offers more material for adsorption. EPA guidance specifically notes that more absorbent material is more effective for gases.
Measure the room before looking at models
Closed bedrooms and living rooms
Measure the length and width of the space the purifier will actually serve. Multiply them to obtain floor area, then multiply by ceiling height to estimate room volume. A purifier placed in a 200-square-foot bedroom should be sized for that bedroom, not for the total area of the flat.
For an ordinary ceiling of about 8 feet (2.44 metres), a 200-square-foot room is approximately 18.6 square metres and 45.4 cubic metres. That volume lets you translate an air-change target into a CADR requirement instead of accepting a vague “up to” area claim.

Open-plan homes
If doors normally stay open between a living room, dining area and kitchen, size for the entire connected area. A unit rated only for the living room will dilute its cleaning effect across the adjoining spaces. If doors are usually closed, treat each occupied room as a separate zone and either move one purifier between rooms or use multiple units.
High ceilings and split levels
Floor-area ratings generally assume a standard ceiling. When the ceiling is higher than about 8 feet, the same floor area contains more air, so choose a larger-rated purifier or calculate from the actual volume. Split-level rooms, stairwells and large voids are particularly difficult for one compact unit to serve evenly.
EPA guidance allows multiple air cleaners when one model cannot cover the required area. Two appropriately sized units can also let you keep one running in a bedroom while another operates in the living area, rather than depending on a single machine at maximum speed.

Use CADR as the primary performance number
CADR, or clean-air delivery rate, is the volume of filtered air delivered over time. EPA’s plain-language rule is: “The higher the CADR, the more particles the air cleaner will remove and the larger the area it can serve.” Compare CADR at the same test condition whenever manufacturers provide that information.
Do not confuse CADR with the physical airflow of an empty fan. CADR reflects the amount of clean air delivered after the filter and housing are taken into account. A high-CADR machine may be larger or louder, but it can clean a room faster or operate at a lower, quieter setting.
Calculate a practical target
Use this calculation:
Required CADR (m³/h) = room volume (m³) × desired air changes per hour.
Three air changes per hour means the purifier can theoretically deliver a room’s volume of clean air every 20 minutes. Five air changes per hour corresponds to once every 12 minutes. The 2025 Consumer Education and Research Society (CERC) buying guide uses those intervals as practical targets and recommends about 20% more rated coverage than the room.
| Room example | Approximate volume at an 8-foot ceiling | CADR for 3 air changes/hour | CADR for 5 air changes/hour | With approximately 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 sq ft bedroom | 45.4 m³ | 136 m³/h | 227 m³/h | About 163–272 m³/h, depending on the target |
| 300 sq ft room | 68.1 m³ | 204 m³/h | 341 m³/h | About 245–409 m³/h |
| 420 sq ft open room | 95.2 m³ | 286 m³/h | 476 m³/h | About 343–571 m³/h |
These are planning calculations, not a guarantee of a particular indoor PM2.5 concentration. Doors opening, leakage around windows, cooking, dust loading and the purifier’s selected fan speed all change the result. The 20% margin gives the fan some reserve so it does not need to run at maximum continuously.
Interpret maximum-area claims conservatively
A manufacturer’s maximum room-size figure is best treated as a ceiling under stated test conditions, not a promise for a Delhi winter pollution episode. Check which standard, ceiling height and fan setting produced the claim. If the specification provides only a square-metre number, convert your room and still look for CADR.

One Philips India buying-guide example states that a 420-square-foot room should have at least two-thirds of that number as CADR, giving 280 m³/h. That example is a useful cross-check, but a volume-and-air-change calculation is more transparent when your ceiling is unusually high or the space is open plan.
Choose the right filter stack
HEPA or an equivalent fine-particle filter
For PM2.5, dust and pollen, choose a purifier that clearly identifies a genuine HEPA or equivalent fine-particle filter. EPA recommends a HEPA-designated unit or a high smoke CADR for the smallest particles. Be cautious with phrases such as “HEPA-like,” “HEPA-type” or “nano filter” unless the maker states the filtration standard and provides a meaningful CADR.
A pre-filter sits before the fine-particle filter and catches hair, lint and larger dust. It protects the expensive filter and can extend its useful life. Look for a pre-filter that can be vacuumed or washed exactly as the manual permits; never wash a filter unless the manufacturer says it is washable.

HEPA media does not remove gases reliably. If your home receives traffic fumes, neighbours’ smoke or persistent cooking odours, look for a substantial activated-carbon stage. Ask how much carbon is present or inspect the filter design. A very thin carbon sheet can be helpful for light odours but should not be treated as equivalent to a deep carbon bed.
Carbon capacity is finite. Once adsorption sites are filled, odour performance falls even though the particle filter may still work. Filter-life indicators based mainly on operating hours may not detect heavy gas loading, so replace the carbon stage according to the manual and your observed odour performance.
Avoid ozone-generating designs
Do not buy an ozone generator as an air-cleaning solution. The CERC guide advises people with low immunity, asthma or dialysis treatment to choose true HEPA with a pre-filter and avoid ozone-based purifiers. Ozone is itself an irritant and is not a substitute for removing PM2.5.

For higher-risk settings, CDC/NIOSH identifies in-room HEPA units with powered fans as a preferred auxiliary air-cleaning option. A conventional fan-driven HEPA purifier is therefore the safer default than an ionizer or a device whose main claim is “active” air treatment. If a unit includes an ionizer, ultraviolet feature or plasma mode, check whether it can be disabled and whether the manufacturer documents ozone emissions.
Compare models on the specifications that affect results
Once a model meets the CADR and filter requirements, compare ownership and usability. App controls should come after the fundamentals.

How to interpret the Philips S2000 example
Philips India’s current product listing for the Philips S2000 states a 344 m³/h CADR, a recommended room size of 79 m², HEPA plus carbon filtration, PM and gas sensing, and a 12-month filter-life indicator. Those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent Delhi apartment comparison.
The 344 m³/h figure would provide roughly 3 air changes per hour in a 114.7 m³ room before allowing for leakage and other losses. At an 8-foot ceiling, that is approximately 505 square feet. A 20% reserve would reduce the comfortable planning area, and a high-pollution bedroom may justify a faster target. Verify the exact model suffix, current warranty, seller, price and replacement-filter stock before purchase because specifications and availability can change.

Replacement filters
Filter replacement is not optional maintenance. A saturated particle filter increases resistance, reduces airflow and can make the purifier noisier; exhausted carbon loses odour-control capacity. Before buying, record the exact replacement-filter part number and check that it is sold through a reliable Delhi channel.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume a “12-month” indicator means every household will get 12 months. The S2000 specification lists a 12-month filter-life indicator, but actual life depends on pollution, dust, fan speed and hours of operation. Treat the indicator as a prompt to inspect or order a filter, not as laboratory proof of remaining performance.

Electricity
Estimate energy cost from the rated input power: watts divided by 1,000, multiplied by hours per day and days operated, then multiplied by your electricity tariff. A purifier that draws 40 watts for 12 hours daily uses about 0.48 kWh per day. Your tariff and the actual fan speed determine the rupee cost, so compare power at the setting you will really use.
Noise and convenience
Check noise at medium and high speed, not only the quietest mode. During a severe AQI episode, you may need a higher setting for several hours. A slightly oversized purifier operated at medium speed can be more comfortable than an undersized unit running flat out.
Place and operate the purifier correctly
- Choose the room first. Put the unit in the bedroom or living area where people spend the most time, rather than in a hallway where it serves no complete room.
- Keep intakes and exhausts clear. Leave the clearance specified in the manual and keep curtains, sofas, beds and shelving away from the grilles. Obstructed airflow lowers effective CADR.
- Close the room when appropriate. During severe outdoor pollution, closing windows and doors reduces new particle entry. Do not block required ventilation or ignore indoor heat, humidity and carbon-dioxide concerns; balance ventilation with outdoor AQI and comfort.
- Run it before occupancy when possible. Starting the purifier before bedtime gives it time to reduce the room’s particle load. Keep it running at a speed that maintains clean air while people are present.
- Use automatic mode as an aid, not a guarantee. PM and gas sensors can change fan speed, but sensor readings are not a substitute for correct sizing. If the room smells smoky or a portable monitor shows rising PM2.5, select a higher manual speed.
- Maintain the pre-filter. Follow the manual’s cleaning interval. Dust on the pre-filter is a sign that it is doing useful work; removing that dust keeps airflow from falling.
- Replace the filter promptly. Use the indicator, calendar reminder and visible condition together. Reset the indicator only after installing the correct replacement.
Delhi-specific operating decisions
Winter pollution episodes
During a high-AQI episode, outdoor air can overwhelm a small purifier if windows remain open. Keep doors and windows closed when practical, run a suitably sized unit continuously or for long periods, and avoid indoor particle sources such as incense, smoking and frying without an exhaust strategy.

Cooking and household sources
Use a kitchen exhaust fan or range hood at the source. A room purifier can reduce residual particles but cannot replace source control. After cooking, a higher fan setting may clear the connected room faster; carbon helps with odours, while HEPA handles the resulting particles.
Monitoring-location differences
CPCB AQI values are averages tied to monitoring locations. A reading from central Delhi may not match conditions in Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad or a different neighbourhood. Use the nearest credible reading as context, but let your room’s symptoms, visible dust, indoor PM monitor and ventilation conditions inform operation.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
- Choosing by square-metre marketing alone: Recalculate from room volume and CADR, then add roughly 20% headroom.
- Buying a tiny desktop unit for a bedroom: Check whether its CADR reaches the 3–5 air-change target; if not, use a larger unit.
- Assuming HEPA removes every pollutant: Add substantial activated carbon for gases and odours, and control sources.
- Treating a thin carbon sheet as a carbon bed: Ask for carbon quantity or thickness and expect finite odour capacity.
- Ignoring high ceilings or open doors: Size for the actual connected volume or use multiple units.
- Running only sleep mode during a pollution spike: Use a higher setting until the room is clean, then reduce speed for comfort.
- Forgetting replacement-filter supply: Confirm the exact filter code and local stock before paying for the purifier.
- Trusting an air-quality display blindly: Sensors are useful for trends and automation, not proof that every pollutant has been removed.
- Buying ozone equipment: Select a powered-fan HEPA design and disable ionization if the product allows it.
A practical Delhi buying checklist
- Measure length, width and ceiling height; include every connected area the purifier must serve.
- Calculate room volume and a 3–5 air-change CADR target.
- Add about 20% rated-capacity headroom so normal operation does not require maximum speed.
- Confirm a genuine HEPA or equivalent fine-particle filter and a washable or replaceable pre-filter.
- Choose a substantial activated-carbon stage when smoke, traffic fumes or odours are concerns.
- Reject ozone-generating designs, especially for asthma, low immunity or dialysis households.
- Compare noise, power draw, sensor controls, warranty and Delhi service only after CADR and filtration pass.
- Price the replacement filter, verify stock and understand the life indicator.
- Plan placement with clear intake and exhaust paths.
- Use AQI and indoor conditions to decide when to close windows and increase fan speed.
The decision in one sentence
For most Delhi bedrooms, buy the quietest powered-fan HEPA purifier whose CADR exceeds the room-volume calculation by about 20%, add real activated carbon for gases and odours, and choose a model whose replacement filters and service are available locally; for large or open rooms, use a higher-CADR unit or more than one purifier rather than trusting an optimistic coverage label.
