1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the correctly sized, highest-efficiency air conditioner that names a lower-global-warming-potential (GWP) refrigerant on its specification sheet, then have it installed and serviced by a technician qualified for that refrigerant. For room air conditioners, ENERGY STAR identifies R-32, R-454B and R-290 as lower-GWP choices. In the United States, new stationary residential and light-commercial systems generally must use a refrigerant with a GWP below 700, subject to a limited equipment-manufacture exception.

What “lower-GWP refrigerant” means
Global warming potential compares a refrigerant’s warming effect with carbon dioxide over the comparison period used by regulators. Carbon dioxide is assigned a reference value of 1; a refrigerant with a GWP of 675 has substantially more warming impact per kilogram released than carbon dioxide.
GWP is only one part of an air conditioner’s climate impact. Electricity use over the equipment’s life, refrigerant leakage, manufacturing, service and disposal all matter. A correctly sized, efficient unit can therefore have a smaller total footprint than an inefficient unit using a refrigerant with a lower published GWP.

ENERGY STAR’s room-air-conditioner guidance identifies R-32, R-454B and R-290 as lower-GWP refrigerant options. The published EPA figures below apply to the refrigerants and regulatory tables cited for this guide, not necessarily to every blend, product model or market.
| Refrigerant | Published GWP | Safety information in the cited material | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| R-32 (HFC-32) | 675 (U.S. EPA, 2026) | A2L; use conditions apply | Below the U.S. 700-GWP limit for the residential and light-commercial air-conditioner subsector; zero ozone-depletion potential in the cited EPA table |
| R-454B | 470 (U.S. EPA, 2026) | A2L; use conditions apply | Below the U.S. 700-GWP limit; zero ozone-depletion potential in the cited EPA table |
| R-290 | Not stated in the cited ENERGY STAR material | Classification and installation requirements depend on the listed product and applicable code | Included by ENERGY STAR among lower-GWP room-air-conditioner refrigerants |
The figures are not a ranking of complete systems. Compare the actual model’s efficiency, charge, capacity and service requirements rather than choosing solely by the smallest refrigerant number.
Which refrigerants should you look for?
R-32
R-32 is HFC-32. EPA’s 2026 table lists a GWP of 675 and identifies it as an A2L refrigerant acceptable for residential and light-commercial air conditioners and heat pumps under specified use conditions. ENERGY STAR includes R-32 in its lower-GWP room-air-conditioner guidance.
Because R-32 is mildly flammable, the equipment must be engineered, labeled and charged for R-32. A technician cannot treat an R-32 system as interchangeable with an older system designed for another refrigerant.
R-454B
EPA’s 2026 table lists R-454B at a GWP of 470. It is also classified A2L and is acceptable for residential and light-commercial air conditioners and heat pumps under the stated conditions. R-454B is a blend, so service instructions, charging procedure and recovery equipment must follow the manufacturer’s documentation.
As with R-32, the designation on the nameplate matters. A system designed for a different refrigerant should not be converted simply because the replacement appears to have a lower GWP.

R-290
R-290 appears on ENERGY STAR’s lower-GWP list for room air conditioners. The cited material does not provide a comparable GWP figure or a single set of requirements for every R-290 product, so evaluate the specific model’s charge, certification, safety instructions and local code compliance. Do not assume that requirements for an R-32 or R-454B appliance automatically apply to an R-290 model.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s technology-transition table sets a 700-GWP limit for new stationary residential and light-commercial air-conditioning and heat-pump systems. The installation compliance date is January 1, 2025. The table also provides an exception for specified components manufactured or imported before that date.
This rule affects new equipment, not a blanket requirement to replace a functioning system immediately. It does mean that the exact refrigerant is important when you compare remaining inventory, replacement equipment and future service. Ask the seller or contractor whether the model is new equipment covered by the current rule, and ask for the manufacture or import documentation if an older component is being offered.
Rules can differ by equipment category and jurisdiction. A room unit, a central split system and a heat pump may have different certification and installation details. Confirm the applicable federal, state or local requirements before ordering.
Step 1: Select the equipment type before comparing refrigerants
First decide what the building actually needs:
- Room or window air conditioner: A self-contained appliance for one room or a small zone.
- Through-wall unit: A permanently mounted room unit that requires a compatible wall sleeve and electrical supply.
- Portable unit: A movable appliance; check its exhaust arrangement, condensate handling and the manufacturer’s refrigerant information.
- Central split system: An outdoor condenser paired with an indoor coil and ductwork. Capacity should be based on a professional load calculation.
- Mini-split or heat pump: An outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor heads; verify refrigerant, line-set limits and cold-weather performance for the exact model.
A lower-GWP refrigerant does not make an unsuitable equipment type suitable. A portable unit may not cool several closed rooms effectively, while a central system can be wasteful if the ducts or building envelope are poor.

Step 2: Size the unit correctly
Oversizing is a climate and comfort mistake. A unit that cools the air very quickly may shut off before it removes enough humidity, leaving the room clammy and causing frequent cycling. Undersizing can produce long runtimes, poor comfort and higher wear.

Room air conditioners
Use the current ENERGY STAR room-area-to-Btu table as the starting point, then apply the published adjustments:
- Reduce the required capacity by 10% for a heavily shaded room.
- Increase capacity by 10% for a very sunny room.
- Add 600 Btu/h for each regular occupant beyond two.
- Add 4,000 Btu/h when the unit serves a kitchen.
Measure the room rather than guessing from the old appliance’s label. If several rooms are connected by open doorways, account for the total area and the way air moves; a single room-unit rating does not guarantee even cooling throughout a floor.
Central, mini-split and heat-pump systems
Ask for a documented heating and cooling load calculation rather than accepting a rule-of-thumb replacement. The calculation should reflect local design temperatures, insulation, windows, orientation, infiltration, occupancy and internal heat gains. Have the contractor state the selected capacity and explain why it matches the calculated load.

Step 3: Verify the refrigerant on the product, not in the advertisement
“Green,” “climate friendly” and “next-generation” are not refrigerant designations. Before paying a deposit, obtain the manufacturer’s specification sheet and inspect the unit’s nameplate or data label. Confirm all of the following:
- The exact designation, such as R-32, R-454B or R-290.
- The refrigerant charge or charge range, when the manufacturer publishes it.
- The equipment category for which the refrigerant is approved.
- The safety classification and required installation controls.
- The model number, electrical requirements and rated capacity.
- The applicable certification mark and efficiency rating.
Photograph the nameplate at installation and keep the specification sheet with the invoice. This record helps a future technician identify the correct recovery cylinder, lubricant, service procedure and replacement parts.
Step 4: Treat A2L safety as an installation requirement
R-32 and R-454B are A2L refrigerants, meaning they are mildly flammable. EPA states that equipment using flammable or mildly flammable refrigerants must be designed for them; they cannot simply be retrofitted into equipment that was not designed for that refrigerant.

Before hiring an installer, ask:
- What training or credential qualifies the technician to work on this A2L model?
- Which safety standard and local code govern the installation?
- Does the model require charge limits, leak detection, airflow, ventilation or refrigerant sensors?
- Are the line-set length, room volume and equipment location within the manufacturer’s limits?
- Will the technician use the specified tools and recovery equipment?
- Who will document commissioning, leak checks and the final charge?
Do not accept an answer that amounts to “it is the same as the old unit.” A2L equipment may require different procedures for brazing, evacuation, leak testing, recovery and electrical or airflow controls. The manufacturer’s installation manual and local authority having jurisdiction control the details for the selected model.

Refrigerant choice and efficiency should be evaluated together. ENERGY STAR certification can help identify efficient products, while DOE/FEMP and CEE-AHRI directories can be used to verify listed performance where the product category is covered.
| Cost or performance item | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Matches the room estimate or professional load calculation | Prevents excessive cycling, humidity problems and unnecessary energy use |
| Efficiency rating | Certified rating for the exact model and configuration | Provides a consistent basis for estimating electricity consumption |
| Purchase price | Equipment, accessories, electrical work and taxes | The advertised unit price may omit installation-critical costs |
| Operating cost | Expected runtime, local electricity rate and climate | A higher-efficiency model can repay an upfront premium over its life |
| Maintenance | Filter access, coil cleaning, leak checks and parts availability | Poor maintenance raises energy use and leakage risk |
| Service and warranty | Qualified local technicians, refrigerant-specific parts and warranty terms | A technically compliant unit is difficult to keep running without local support |
DOE’s cost-effectiveness approach is straightforward: compare the lifetime energy savings with any higher purchase and installation cost. Use realistic operating hours and your electricity tariff; a laboratory rating is not a promise of a particular household bill.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 6: Check certification, local service and future parts
Certification is useful only when it applies to the exact model and configuration you are buying. Check the product listing, model suffix, capacity and voltage rather than relying on a similar-looking family name.
Call two local service companies before purchase and ask whether they work on the named refrigerant and model family. Confirm availability of control boards, sensors, compressors, fan motors and manufacturer-approved refrigerant. A lower-GWP choice that cannot be serviced locally may create longer outages or expensive emergency work.
Review the warranty for required maintenance, authorized service, refrigerant-related exclusions and who pays labor. Keep commissioning records, invoices and refrigerant additions; they establish a useful service history.

Step 7: Plan maintenance and refrigerant recovery
Proper maintenance reduces energy waste, helps the equipment last longer and can limit refrigerant leakage. Follow the manufacturer’s filter-cleaning schedule, keep outdoor coils clear, maintain airflow and have unusual temperature, noise or runtime changes investigated promptly.
EPA prohibits knowingly venting refrigerant during maintenance, repair or disposal, including HFC substitutes. Ask the contractor to recover the charge with approved equipment and to explain where the recovered refrigerant will go. Do not puncture, cut or discard a sealed appliance until the refrigerant has been properly removed.
At replacement, obtain a written record showing the old charge was recovered and the appliance was routed through an appropriate reclamation or disposal process. This protects against illegal releases and gives the next owner or technician accurate information.
A practical buying checklist
Use this checklist while comparing quotes:
- Identify the equipment type and the rooms or zones it must serve.
- Calculate capacity with the ENERGY STAR room guidance or a professional load calculation.
- Shortlist efficient models certified for the required capacity and electrical service.
- Read the specification sheet and record the exact refrigerant designation.
- Confirm the model’s GWP is permitted for the applicable U.S. equipment category and installation date, if relevant.
- Check the refrigerant’s safety classification and every installation control in the manual.
- Verify the installer’s A2L capability for R-32 or R-454B equipment.
- Get written prices for equipment, labor, electrical work, accessories, commissioning and permits.
- Compare projected lifetime energy cost, warranty, parts and local service.
- Put the recovery and disposal plan in the contract.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by refrigerant name alone
A lower published GWP does not compensate for an oversized, inefficient or poorly installed system. Compare capacity, efficiency and lifetime energy use at the same time.
Assuming any replacement refrigerant will work
R-32 and R-454B equipment must be designed for those refrigerants. Retrofitting an older system without manufacturer approval can create fire, pressure, lubricant, control and warranty problems.
Trusting a generic “eco” claim
Require the designation on the nameplate and specification sheet. If the seller will not identify the refrigerant, do not treat the product as a verified lower-GWP choice.
Ignoring humidity and shade
Apply the room-sizing adjustments and avoid buying extra capacity “just in case.” Oversizing can reduce dehumidification even when the thermostat reaches its set point quickly.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Leaving disposal to an unknown hauler
Confirm who recovers the charge and where the appliance will be processed. Venting is prohibited, and an informal pickup does not prove legal recovery.
The decision in one sentence
Buy the smallest correctly sized, efficiently certified model that names an approved lower-GWP refrigerant, meets the rules for your equipment category, can be safely installed by a trained technician and has a documented maintenance and recovery path.
