Choose an AI voice generator only after checking the terms for the specific product, plan, and region you will use. Compare how it verifies speaker consent, what rights it receives in recordings and voice models, whether your plan permits commercial use, how sharing and deletion work, and whether synthetic output must be disclosed. A provider’s grant of rights to generated output does not settle what it may do with your uploaded audio or voice model.
Start with the exact product and contract
“AI voice generator” can mean text-to-speech, cloning a real speaker, or an API used in another product. Terms for those services may differ even under the same brand. Before uploading audio, identify the product, plan, and contract that actually apply to you, including any regional terms. The examples below illustrate questions to ask; they are not a like-for-like ranking.

- Consent and identity: Does the service require the speaker’s explicit written permission, a rights warranty, identity checks, a verification recording, or only a self-attestation? Can you clone only your own voice?
- Input and model rights: What license does the provider receive for audio and voice models? Can it use them to operate or improve services, develop products, or sublicense? How long does that license last, and can you withdraw it?
- Output and commercial use: Who owns or may use generated output? Does permission depend on your plan, project, attribution, or rights to the source voice?
- Privacy and lifecycle: What retention and deletion controls exist for recordings and models? What remains after account closure or a deletion request?
- Sharing and disclosure: Is a clone private by default? Who can use it if shared, and can you end access? Must output be identified as synthetic?
- Prohibited uses: What restrictions apply to impersonation, deception, fraud, political content, or other uses?
Keep a copy of the terms that applied when you signed up or uploaded a voice. Contract language and product features can change; check the current documents before a new project or upload.
Get permission from the speaker, not just the platform
Document permission from the person whose voice is being recorded or cloned, including the intended uses and whether commercial distribution is planned. Keep that record yourself. A platform’s willingness to accept an upload does not prove that you have the necessary rights.

Provider controls are not interchangeable. ElevenLabs says its Professional Voice Clone flow is limited to the account holder’s own voice: the voice owner must create and verify their clone, then may privately share it. Its help page says another person’s consent does not let an account holder create that person’s Professional Voice Clone (ElevenLabs’ Professional Voice Clone guidance). By contrast, Speechify’s cited AI Voice API supplemental terms require audio from a consenting speaker directly contracted by the customer, with explicit written consent (Speechify AI Voice API terms, updated June 10, 2024). Those are product-specific requirements, not a universal rule for either company’s other products.
A consent checkbox alone is not the same as provider verification. Consumer Reports’ qualitative report on six voice-cloning services described self-attestation in the flows it examined and cautioned that this safeguard is not foolproof (Consumer Reports’ voice-cloning report). That assessment applies to the services and flows it reviewed, not necessarily every current product.

Read the provider’s license to your input
Check the rights granted over uploaded audio and resulting voice models separately from rights to generated output. A service may allow you to use output while receiving a broad license to process or use the input.
For example, ElevenLabs’ cited Terms of Service for non-EEA users say that, as between the user and the company, users retain rights in input and output except as specified in the terms. The same terms grant ElevenLabs a license to use content, including voice, to provide and improve services and develop products. They describe that license as perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, and sublicensable. They also say users may request deletion of User Voice Models created with input recordings (ElevenLabs Terms of Service). These are non-EEA terms; a model-deletion request is not evidence that every copy or category of input is erased on the same schedule.

Ask whether the provider can use a recording or model beyond generating your requested audio, and whether deleting the model ends any license already granted. If the terms do not make the answer clear, do not upload a sensitive or third-party voice until you have clarification.
Verify commercial rights for the model and plan you will use
Do not assume that all output from a provider is commercially cleared, or that a commercial-use statement covers every model in its interface. Confirm the exact model, plan, project, and terms.

- ElevenLabs: Its publishing help page says the free plan does not include a commercial license and cannot be used for commercial purposes. For other use, it says commercial use depends on necessary intellectual-property rights and compliance with applicable law, its terms, and its Prohibited Use Policy (publishing generated content; Prohibited Use Policy).
- Adobe Firefly: Adobe describes its Firefly Speech Model as trained on licensed and public-domain content and says its output can be used for professional projects. Adobe’s page also lists an ElevenLabs partner model, so verify which model generated your audio (Adobe Firefly AI Voice Generator). Adobe’s generative-AI licensing terms say customers retain rights in input and own output, subject to the terms; its user guidelines prohibit uses that violate third-party copyright, privacy, publicity, or other rights (Adobe Generative AI Feature Licensing Terms; Adobe Generative AI User Guidelines).
- LOVO: LOVO’s site describes its service as allowing users rights to created content, including commercial rights. Treat that as a general claim, not an unconditional grant for every plan or use; consult the current applicable terms and its legal and commercial-rights help materials (LOVO; LOVO legal and commercial-rights help).
These product statements do not replace the applicable contract, and output permissions do not grant rights to imitate a speaker without permission.
Check what sharing a voice model allows
A private workflow and a shared or listed clone create different exposure. Find out who can generate audio with the model, whether it becomes available to other users, and how access can be revoked.

ElevenLabs’ Voice Library Addendum, last updated March 6, 2026, says that making a User Voice Model available in the Library authorizes other users to access and use it through that service; it also requires the model to be based on the sharer’s own voice and appropriate rights and permissions (ElevenLabs Voice Library Addendum). Its help material describes private sharing for a verified Professional Voice Clone. Before sharing any model, read the relevant sharing terms and confirm how to end access.
Look for synthetic-voice disclosure and use restrictions
Some contracts require you to tell audiences that audio is AI-generated. Speechify’s cited AI Voice API supplemental agreement requires commercially reasonable disclosure that output is AI-generated and not a human voice. This requirement is specific to that API agreement and does not establish the rule for every Speechify product (Speechify AI Voice API terms).
Also read the provider’s prohibited-use policy rather than relying on a general promise that output is yours. ElevenLabs’ policy places responsibility for legal compliance and use classifications on customers and prohibits specified harmful or unlawful uses (ElevenLabs Prohibited Use Policy). Provider permissions cannot override a third party’s rights or applicable law.

- Identify the contract: Record the provider, exact product, model, plan, and applicable regional terms.
- Confirm authority: Obtain and retain permission from the actual speaker for the intended recording, cloning, and distribution.
- Read the input license: Note permitted provider uses, sublicensing, duration, withdrawal, retention, and deletion terms for both audio and models.
- Confirm output permission: Check commercial rights, attribution or project limits, plan restrictions, and any dependence on source-voice rights.
- Review sharing and disclosure: Determine who can access a model, how access ends, and whether output must be labeled or disclosed as synthetic.
- Check prohibited uses and law: Confirm that the planned use complies with the provider policy and relevant local rules.
Contract terms and applicable law are separate questions. The U.S. Copyright Office’s AI initiative addresses copyrightability of AI-generated work and the use of copyrighted material in training; its Part 1 report recommended a federal digital-replica law on July 31, 2024. This is context, not a rule that resolves every voice use or applies to every jurisdiction (U.S. Copyright Office: Copyright and Artificial Intelligence). For a high-stakes commercial voice license, get advice from a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.
