How to Choose an AI Tool for Children: Safety Features to Check

The safest choice is not the chatbot with the friendliest marketing. Before a child uses any AI tool, verify five things in the provider’s current documentation and settings: age eligibility, protections against harmful or age-inappropriate interactions, data practices, honest disclosure of the system’s limits, and controls a caregiver can actually use. Then check whether the tool’s purpose fits the child’s developmental stage. These safeguards lower particular risks; they do not prove that a service is suitable for every child, situation, or task.

Start with age eligibility and developmental fit

Age is the first gate, not a detail to handle after creating an account. Find the provider’s stated minimum age, whether parental consent is required, and whether independent conversations are allowed. Also look for an intended age band and purpose. A tool designed for supervised homework may not be appropriate for an eight-year-old’s unsupervised, open-ended conversation.

Age requirements and data obligations vary by country, and providers change their terms and settings. There is no single legal minimum age that applies to every AI service worldwide. Read the live terms, sign-up screen, and child-safety documentation for the country where the account will be used.

Questions to answer before sign-up

  • What is the provider’s minimum age for an account?
  • Does a parent or guardian have to consent, and how is consent verified?
  • Does the product permit independent use, or does it require an adult to be present?
  • Is the experience designed for the child’s developmental stage, or merely available to that age?
  • What happens when the service learns that an account holder has reached a different age band?

UNESCO recommends considering an age limit for independent conversations with generative-AI platforms. That is a useful household rule even where a service technically permits younger users: decide whether the child can use it alone, for which tasks, and for how long.

Inspect the actual content and interaction safeguards

A label such as “kid-safe” is not a specification. Read what the service says it restricts, how those restrictions work, and what happens when a child raises a sensitive issue. Child-centered AI guidance from UNICEF treats safety as a core requirement, including protection from harmful content and interactions.

Look for protections in these areas

  • Age-inappropriate material: The provider should describe controls for sexual content, graphic violence, self-harm, dangerous instructions, illegal activity, harassment, and other topics unsuitable for the stated age.
  • Conversation behavior: Check whether the system refuses unsafe requests consistently, avoids encouraging risky experiments, and gives an age-appropriate explanation rather than a cryptic error.
  • Sensitive or urgent disclosures: Find out whether the tool directs a child toward a trusted adult, emergency services, or a crisis resource when the child mentions immediate danger, abuse, self-harm, or threats.
  • Abuse and bullying: Determine how the product handles requests to insult, threaten, expose private information, or target another child.
  • Image, voice, and file features: Safety rules should cover uploaded photos, generated images, voice conversations, and documents, not only typed text.

Evaluate the provider’s explanation, not just its promise

A useful help page names the categories protected, the age groups covered, known limitations, and the route for reporting a harmful response. Be cautious when documentation only says that content is “moderated” without explaining what that means for a child’s account. No automated filter catches every unsafe answer, so plan for supervision and a way for the child to stop and ask an adult.

Read the data rules line by line

Children may reveal names, school details, family circumstances, health information, feelings, location, or photos in a conversation. Before allowing use, identify what the service collects, why it collects it, how long it keeps it, who can access it, and whether prompts are used to improve models.

The privacy questions that matter

  • Collection: Does the service store prompts, generated answers, uploaded files, voice recordings, device identifiers, location, or usage and behavioral signals?
  • Retention: How long are conversations and account records kept? Are deleted chats removed immediately, or only from the visible interface while backups remain for a stated period?
  • Model improvement: May conversations be used to train or improve models? Is there an opt-out, and does it apply to children’s accounts by default?
  • Sharing: Are data sent to vendors, advertisers, analytics providers, schools, or other services? What happens if the provider is sold or changes its policy?
  • Access and deletion: Can a parent or child view, export, correct, or delete the account and its conversations? Is there a clear process and a stated time frame?
  • Visibility: Can the child see what is collected and how it is used in language they can understand? Can the caregiver manage those choices without taking over every conversation?
  • Engagement signals: Does the service use emotional or behavioral data to keep a child talking longer or to personalize persuasion?

UNICEF’s child-centered principles emphasize data minimization, limited retention, and meaningful visibility and control. UNICEF Digital Impact states: “Children’s data must never be used to optimise engagement at the expense of wellbeing.” Treat that as a practical test: a feature that increases time spent chatting deserves scrutiny even if it is presented as personalization.

Keep the child’s disclosures proportionate to the task

For a spelling exercise, the tool does not need a real surname, school, exact location, medical history, or a photograph. Teach the child to use fictional examples and to pause before uploading anything identifying. Privacy settings cannot undo information that a child has already copied into a prompt or an image.

Check whether the child can recognize the system as AI

A child should not have to guess whether a response came from a person, a search result, or a computer-generated system. Prefer tools that identify themselves as AI and explain their capabilities and limits in language a child can understand. UNICEF identifies transparency and explainability as child-centered requirements.

Signs of useful transparency

  • The interface clearly says when text, images, or audio are generated by AI.
  • The tool explains that it can be wrong, make up sources, misunderstand a question, or lack current information.
  • Uncertainty is expressed when evidence is incomplete instead of presenting every answer with the same confidence.
  • The product distinguishes a generated suggestion from professional medical, legal, financial, or emergency advice.
  • The child can find an explanation of how answers are produced and how to report a problem.

For younger children, agree on a simple rule: an AI answer is a starting point, not an authority. Important claims should be checked with a trusted adult, a teacher, or an appropriate primary source. A polished tone is not evidence that an answer is true.

Understand parental controls precisely

“Parental controls” can mean a time limit, a content setting, an account link, an alert, or something else entirely. Do not assume the phrase means that a parent can read every conversation. Open the settings yourself and record what each control does before handing over the device.

Separate management from conversation monitoring

Control area What to verify
Account and age Can a caregiver link the account, correct an age status, approve use, or remove the account?
Content settings Which topics, features, image modes, voice modes, or external actions can be restricted?
Schedules Can a caregiver set quiet hours, daily limits, or school-time blocks, and do those limits apply across devices?
Alerts What triggers an alert, how quickly does it arrive, and does it show a category, a snippet, or only that an event occurred?
Conversation access Can the caregiver view message contents, or only manage settings and receive safety notifications?
Changing age status What changes when the child reaches the provider’s next age band, and do linked controls end automatically?

Use the least intrusive setting that still addresses the risk. A clear family agreement about when an adult must be involved is more useful than a control nobody has tested. Review settings after software updates and whenever the provider changes its terms.

What one current provider example shows

OpenAI’s Help Center documentation says eligible ChatGPT accounts identified as under 18 can receive ChatGPT for Teens, with age-appropriate protections and optional linked parental controls. The documentation describes caregivers managing selected settings and schedules, while stating that parental controls do not let a parent read or monitor the teen’s conversations. It also says an account identified as 18 or older can move out of the teen experience, potentially ending linked controls. This is a product-specific example, not evidence that other AI services offer the same controls. Recheck the provider’s live documentation before relying on any setting.

Treat companion-like behavior as a separate risk

An AI that acts like a tutor is different from one that presents itself as a friend, confidant, or romantic partner. UNICEF identifies distinct and heightened risks in conversational and relational AI. The concern is not only explicit content; it is the possibility that a child begins to treat a system as a human relationship or depends on it for emotional regulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Warning signs in product design

  • The system claims to miss the child, feel hurt when the child leaves, or need the child’s attention.
  • It discourages the child from talking to parents, friends, teachers, or professionals.
  • It uses streaks, guilt, exclusive language, or escalating notifications to prolong the conversation.
  • It presents simulated affection or secrecy as proof of a special bond.
  • It cannot clearly distinguish role-play from a real person when the child asks.

Prefer tools with a defined task, visible boundaries, and language that reinforces human support rather than replacing it. If a child says the AI is their only friend, is afraid to stop chatting, or is hiding the relationship, pause use and involve a trusted adult. For immediate danger or abuse, contact appropriate emergency or safeguarding services rather than relying on the AI system.

Match the tool to the child’s purpose

Safety features cannot compensate for a poor developmental fit. Write down the intended task before comparing products: explaining a math concept, practicing a language, brainstorming a story, accessibility support, or something else. Then ask whether the tool helps with that task without encouraging overreliance or simulated intimacy.

Purpose-fit questions

  • Can the child complete the task if the tool is unavailable?
  • Does the experience encourage explanation and practice, or simply provide finished work?
  • Can an adult or teacher understand how the tool was used?
  • Are outputs appropriate for the child’s reading level and attention span?
  • Does the tool collect more personal information than the task requires?

For schoolwork, set boundaries such as asking for hints, examples, or feedback instead of submitting generated text unchanged. For creative activities, decide whether the child should disclose AI assistance. The right rule depends on the assignment and school policy, but the child should know that generated work is not automatically their own understanding.

Use a repeatable comparison method

When comparing two or more tools, ask the same questions and record answers from current official terms, help pages, and the settings screen. A blank or vague answer is itself a decision signal; mark it “not stated” rather than assuming the most favorable interpretation.

Comparison axis Record for every tool Why it affects the decision
Age and intended use Minimum age, consent method, independent-use rule, intended age band, and stated purpose A technically available service may not be suitable for the child’s stage or unsupervised use.
Content and interaction safeguards Restricted topics, safeguards for sensitive interactions, refusal behavior, reporting path, and help offered in urgent situations Shows what the service does when a child encounters a dangerous or distressing request.
Privacy and data Data collected, retention, model-improvement use, sharing, deletion, and child/parent visibility Determines the long-term exposure created by ordinary conversations.
Transparency and reliability AI disclosure, child-friendly explanation of limits, uncertainty cues, and correction or reporting tools Helps a child avoid treating fluent output as unquestionable fact.
Caregiver control Settings, schedules, alerts, conversation visibility, account-linking process, and age-transition behavior Prevents a mismatch between what a parent expects and what the control actually does.
Purpose and developmental fit Task supported, reading level, overreliance risks, and any relational or engagement design A narrowly useful tool is often preferable to an open-ended companion experience.

Make a decision without inventing a “safest” winner

Do not rank a service as safest from marketing claims or one favorable demonstration. Independent, comparable real-world safety evidence is rarely available across tools. Instead, set minimum requirements for your child: an eligible age, documented protections for the intended use, acceptable data handling, understandable AI disclosure, and controls you can operate. Reject a tool when a critical answer is missing or when its design conflicts with the child’s needs.

Set up the first use deliberately

  1. Read the current terms and privacy notice. Save the date you checked them and note the minimum age, consent, retention, model-use, and deletion rules.
  2. Create the correct account type. Do not enter a false birth date to bypass an age gate. Complete any required caregiver consent and link the account using the provider’s documented process.
  3. Open every safety setting. Configure content, image, voice, external-action, schedule, and notification controls. Confirm whether each setting applies to all devices.
  4. Test the controls with harmless scenarios. Verify that a time limit blocks access when expected, that a restricted feature is unavailable, and that an alert describes what it actually reports. Do not use a child’s real sensitive information as a test.
  5. Teach three stop rules. The child should stop when an answer is frightening or sexual, when the system asks for personal information, or when it tells the child to keep a secret from a trusted adult.
  6. Agree on verification. Decide which answers require an adult, teacher, professional, or primary source before anyone acts on them.
  7. Schedule a review. Recheck settings after major updates, when the child changes age bands, or when the tool adds voice, image, browsing, or action-taking features.

Know what to do when a response goes wrong

If the AI gives unsafe or disturbing content

Have the child stop interacting, preserve only the minimum information needed to report the incident, and use the provider’s reporting route. Review whether a feature can be disabled and whether the account should be paused. Discuss the incident without blaming the child for asking a question.

If the child shares private information

Stop further disclosure, delete the conversation if the service allows it, use available account-deletion or data-request controls, and consider changing exposed passwords or contacting affected people. Deletion may not remove every backup immediately, so read the provider’s stated process.

If the AI gives dangerous advice

Do not follow or test it. For medical, self-harm, abuse, or immediate-danger situations, involve a qualified professional, trusted adult, crisis service, or emergency service appropriate to your location. The chatbot is not a substitute for urgent human help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the child becomes emotionally dependent

Pause the relational feature or the entire service, ask open questions about what the system said, and rebuild human support around the child. Escalate to a mental-health or safeguarding professional when the child is distressed, isolated, threatened, or unable to stop.

Do not confuse AI software with AI toys

This guide concerns choosing an AI software tool and inspecting its safeguards. Physical AI toys are a separate category with microphones, cameras, connected accounts, and different privacy and developmental risks. Common Sense Media’s January 2026 guidance says to avoid AI toys for children age five and under and to use extreme caution before buying them for ages six to twelve. That caution does not establish that a particular chatbot or educational service is safe, and it should not be transferred between product categories without checking the relevant device’s documentation.

A practical go/no-go checklist

  • The child meets the provider’s current minimum age and any consent requirement.
  • The intended task and independent-use level are appropriate for the child’s development.
  • Documented safeguards address harmful content, sensitive disclosures, and reporting.
  • You know what data is collected, retained, shared, and used for model improvement.
  • Deletion and privacy choices are available and understandable.
  • The interface identifies AI output and explains that it can be wrong.
  • You have verified exactly what parental controls manage, alert, or reveal.
  • The design does not pressure the child toward secrecy, dependence, or excessive engagement.
  • The child knows when to stop and ask a trusted adult.
  • You have a date to review the settings and terms again.

If any critical item is unknown, wait, ask the provider for a clear answer, or choose a more limited tool. Safety features are useful only when their scope is understood and the adults around the child remain part of the decision.
