It should connect agent identity, task context, tool calls and arguments, approvals, policy decisions, results, and handoffs across delegated agents. It should also enforce least privilege before consequential actions execute, then produce an audit trail responders can use to understand what happened.
Use your own agents and deployment architecture to validate those capabilities. As of October 4, 2026, official vendor descriptions provide examples of different approaches, but the cited material does not establish a controlled comparison or independent proof of product effectiveness.

What should an AI agent security platform monitor?
An autonomous agent changes the security boundary because it can reason, call tools, retain or update memory, and take actions on a user’s behalf. A useful monitoring record therefore needs more than a prompt and a final answer: it should let a security team reconstruct the run and establish who or what authorized each consequential step.
For a representative run, check whether the platform can connect:

- The initiating user or event, task, and environment.
- The agent, its owner, runtime or framework, service identity, and effective permissions.
- Tool and API calls, arguments, retrieved data, memory reads or writes, and inter-agent handoffs.
- Policy evaluations, approvals, denials, errors, and execution results.
- The policy version and relevant trace context needed to explain why an action was allowed.
OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet recommends logging agent decisions, tool calls, and outcomes, preserving audit trails, detecting anomalous behavior, and tracking token use and costs. It also identifies approval-bypass attempts, elevated privilege use, unusual tool frequency, and spikes in high-risk actions as monitoring concerns.
Monitoring should not create a second data-exposure problem. Evaluate redaction, access controls, retention, and export for secrets and personal or confidential information in traces. For delegated workflows, verify that records distinguish the initiating user, parent agent, child agent, and service credential; the NIST AI Agent Standards Initiative identifies agent identity and authentication as areas of standards and research activity.

- Prompt injection: direct instructions from a user and indirect instructions embedded in documents or other retrieved content.
- Tool misuse or poisoning: an attempt to invoke an unapproved tool, manipulate a tool’s behavior, or use valid arguments for an unintended purpose.
- Excessive permissions and privilege escalation: an agent attempting an action beyond its task or assigned scope. OWASP’s Excessive Agency guidance illustrates the mismatch between a narrow need, such as reading documents, and a broader permission such as write or delete access.
- Data or credential exfiltration: attempts to send sensitive material to an unauthorized tool, destination, or agent.
- Memory poisoning and goal hijacking: changes to retained context or instructions that redirect later behavior.
- Approval bypass and anomalous high-impact actions: attempts to evade a required human decision, or unusual actions such as a sudden increase in sensitive operations.
- Cross-agent propagation and runaway activity: unsafe behavior passed between agents, unbounded loops, or cost growth that exceeds operational limits.
For each scenario, inspect both the alert and the underlying trace. A useful result identifies the actor, action, arguments, policy decision, and outcome; it should help an investigator determine which control allowed or stopped the behavior. OWASP also recommends monitoring anomalous tool invocation, approval bypass, privilege elevation, and high-risk action spikes in its agent security guidance.

How should you evaluate a platform?
- Inventory the agents and trust boundaries. Include agents embedded in business applications as well as those deployed through third-party frameworks. Record their owners, runtimes, models, tools, connected data, service identities, and effective permissions. Ask how the candidate discovers new agents and detects changes to those attributes.
- Trace a complete run. Use a representative task to verify that the product links its trigger to retrieval, memory activity, tool calls, approvals or denials, errors, execution results, and any agent handoffs. Confirm that an auditor can distinguish identities across delegation rather than seeing only one shared service account.
- Test enforcement before execution. Determine whether policy is evaluated before a consequential action runs, and whether rules can be scoped by agent, user, task, environment, and risk. Exercise denial behavior, approval requirements, parameter binding, permission expiration, circuit breakers, and emergency stops. Confirm that failure or timeout does not silently turn a denied action into an allowed one.
- Run the threat scenarios. Apply the same controlled tests to each shortlisted product and document expected versus observed decisions, alerts, trace detail, and response actions. Ask vendors to show the relevant product version and configuration rather than relying on a general feature description.
- Check data handling and integrations. Validate redaction and retention controls, and test export into the identity, SIEM/SOAR, data-governance, and telemetry systems your responders actually use. Check compatibility with your frameworks and existing OpenTelemetry or OCSF pipelines.
- Estimate operating work. Include instrumentation and deployment, policy ownership and review, alert tuning, false-positive handling, upgrades, incident export, and retention administration. A product that detects an event but leaves the team without an actionable trace can shift rather than reduce response work.
Keep a written acceptance record for each test: the agent and configuration used, expected policy, observed decision, alert and trace evidence, and any operational dependency. This makes a vendor demonstration easier to compare with a later deployment and exposes gaps hidden by high-level capability lists.
How do observability and verification standards fit?
Use standards-oriented material to turn broad security claims into questions and checks, while accounting for maturity. OWASP describes AISVS 1.0, released in June 2026, as a vendor-neutral verification catalogue with 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices. Its scope includes AI lifecycle security, including agent orchestration and monitoring. Map applicable requirements to evidence for the exact product version, configuration, framework, policies, and tests you evaluate.

For traces, the OWASP Agent Observability Standard frames goals around instrumentation, traceability, and inspectability and extends OpenTelemetry and OCSF. The cited AOS Trace specification is labeled a working draft, so treat it as a useful reference rather than assuming it is a stable dependency. Check the current revision and status before building an integration around it.

How do current platform approaches differ?
| Approach | What official material describes | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Open-source runtime governance toolkit | Microsoft announced its Agent Governance Toolkit on April 2, 2026 as an MIT-licensed open-source project. Microsoft describes policy enforcement before action execution, agent identity, runtime controls, reliability features, compliance evidence, and SDKs for Python, TypeScript, Rust, Go, and .NET. These are project and vendor descriptions, not independent test results. Its Agent OS announcement also claims less than 0.1 ms p99 policy-engine latency; that is a vendor-published figure, not an independently measured result. | Project maturity and maintenance; framework coverage; deployment and policy-authoring model; trace depth; and whether your team can operate, support, and review the code and policies. |
| Commercial AI security platform | Palo Alto Networks positions Prisma AIRS as a platform for AI and agent security. Its agent security materials describe identity verification, runtime behavior monitoring, policy enforcement, and controls for manipulation, data exposure, and unsafe actions. These are vendor descriptions, not comparative proof. | Request a version-specific demonstration. Test framework coverage, inspection points, identity mapping, policy behavior, audit export, deployment changes, data handling, and detection and latency in your own environment. |
| Vendor-neutral verification and observability references | OWASP AISVS provides testable security requirements; OWASP AOS frames agent observability and traces through OpenTelemetry and OCSF extensions. The cited trace specification is marked a working draft. | Use the material to structure requirements and evidence requests; verify the revision and maturity of any specification before treating it as a stable integration contract. |
These approaches are not interchangeable product categories: a toolkit, a commercial platform, and a verification reference address different parts of an evaluation. The cited official material does not establish a matched feature comparison, independent detection efficacy, or a universal ranking. Do not infer that a stated threat coverage or latency figure predicts performance in your deployment.
What should determine the shortlist?
Start with the controls your highest-risk workflows require, then remove candidates that cannot demonstrate them in your environment. A strong fit is one that can both explain and constrain agent behavior across your actual identities, tools, data, and delegation paths.
- Prefer clear, reconstructable traces over prompt-and-response-only visibility.
- Require least-privilege permissions and policy checks before sensitive actions, not alerts only after execution.
- Demand useful evidence for your threat scenarios and incident workflow rather than accepting broad coverage claims at face value.
- Confirm that integrations, retention, and policy operations fit the team that will own the system.
- Record unresolved gaps and compensating controls before deployment; do not treat a vendor label or standards mapping as proof that a control works in your configuration.
OWASP’s concise principle is to “Grant agents the minimum tools required for their specific task,” paired with the instruction to “Log all agent decisions, tool calls, and outcomes” in its AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet. Together, those principles capture the essential buying test: can the platform show what an agent did, and can it prevent actions outside the authority the task requires?
