Choose an AI security assessment provider by matching its test plan to your system’s architecture and business risks—not by choosing the longest list of prompts, tools, or credentials. Before comparing proposals, define what the system can access and do, set written authorization and safety boundaries, then assess each provider on its threat model, evidence, reporting, remediation guidance, and retest plan.

Start by defining what needs to be assessed

A provider cannot produce a meaningful assessment from the label “AI system” alone. A public chatbot, a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) application, an agent that calls business tools, and a multi-agent workflow expose different components and consequences. Your first procurement task is to describe the system as it operates in your business, including its connections and permissions.

Build an inventory of the real attack surface

Document the models and versions in use where you know them, the applications and interfaces through which users reach them, retrieval sources, connected tools, integrations, sensitive data, user groups, and business-critical workflows. Include agent actions and the permissions behind them: for example, whether the system can only draft a response or can also retrieve records, update data, trigger a process, or communicate with another service.

Describe how the system is deployed and used, who uses it, and which business processes depend on it. The context matters: the same model behavior can have different consequences depending on whether it affects a public FAQ, an internal knowledge base, or a workflow that can take actions. Include relevant application and infrastructure components as well as AI-specific components; an AI assessment should not make conventional security risks disappear from the scope.

Make scope and exclusions explicit

Write down the assets, environments, accounts, data sources, integrations, and workflows the provider may test. State what is excluded, such as production systems, particular third-party services, or actions that could affect customers or business records. If a system has multiple environments, identify which one is approved for testing and how it differs from production.

Scope should be concrete enough that a provider can explain what it will attempt, what it will not touch, and what it will need from you. A proposal that says only “AI red team” without naming the relevant application, retrieval pipeline, tools, data access, and operating context is not yet an assessable plan. OWASP’s provider evaluation criteria treats scope, realistic threat models, safe testing, and authorization as core evaluation topics.

Secure authorization and safety rules before testing

AI security testing can involve adversarial inputs, attempts to access information, and interactions with connected tools. Agree in writing on the authorization and rules of engagement before work begins. A provider’s technical capability does not substitute for your approval to test the systems, data, and services in scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Put operational boundaries in the rules of engagement

Agree on the named systems, environments, accounts, test data, and permitted test methods. Set approval gates for higher-impact actions, identify prohibited destructive or irreversible actions, provide escalation contacts, specify data-handling expectations, and define conditions that require the provider to stop. Establish how the provider should report a suspected exposure or an unexpected effect during testing.

Decide whether testing will use a sandbox and what that environment can safely represent. A sandbox may limit the chance of impact, but it must still let the provider test the relevant behavior and permissions. If the assessment cannot safely exercise a production-connected action, record that limit and agree on an alternative or document it as untested; do not let an unstated assumption turn into a claim of coverage.

Watch for authorization and safety red flags

  • The provider cannot describe its approval boundaries or expects to test systems outside the written scope.
  • The proposal does not name prohibited actions, escalation contacts, or stop conditions.
  • It is unclear how test data, findings, and any sensitive information discovered during testing will be handled.
  • The provider proposes risky actions without explaining how they will be authorized, contained, and reported.

OWASP’s AI red-teaming provider and tooling guide discusses authorization and safe testing alongside provider evaluation. Treat unclear authorization or unsafe methods as reasons to resolve the proposal before signing, not as details to work out after testing starts.

Require tests that match the architecture and business logic

Prompt-only jailbreak demonstrations are not a sufficient plan for an application that retrieves private content, calls tools, or participates in a business workflow. Ask the provider to explain the abuse cases it will test against your actual system and how it will trace risks across the model, application, data, and connected actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a chatbot or user-facing AI feature

Ask how testing will account for the interface, user types, data available to the feature, and intended use. The provider should be able to connect proposed adversarial tests to plausible misuse or security consequences in your environment, rather than presenting a generic list of prompts as though every system had the same exposure.

For a RAG application

Make retrieval sources and access boundaries part of the scope. Ask how the plan considers the relationship between user permissions, retrieved content, and the application’s response. The proposal should say which sources and workflows are included, how the provider will test relevant access behavior, and what it cannot verify if access or data is out of scope.

For an agent or connected workflow

List the tools, integrations, permissions, and actions available to the agent. Ask how the provider will assess whether those actions can be triggered or used in an unintended or unauthorized way, and how it will keep tests from creating real-world impact. The answer should distinguish between a model producing unsafe text and a system carrying out an unsafe action; the latter depends on the surrounding application and permissions as well as model behavior.

Ask how human and automated testing work together

Automation can help explore cases efficiently, but a tool-generated result is not a substitute for a reasoned threat model or for human adversarial work. Ask which parts of the assessment use automation, how the team interprets and validates results, and how manual testing is used to explore business-specific scenarios. OWASP’s guide says automation should reduce cost and working hours without eliminating human adversarial creativity.

Request examples of the kinds of test scenarios the provider would tailor to your system, along with a description of how it would determine whether a result is material. You do not need a vendor’s full testing playbook to compare proposals, but you do need enough detail to see that its method extends beyond a demonstration designed to produce a dramatic-looking output.

Use standards to make proposals comparable, not to outsource judgment

Frameworks can help you define expected coverage and ask providers to map their work to recognizable requirements. They do not, by themselves, prove that a provider is qualified or that an assessment is complete. Ask what a framework means in the proposal: which requirements inform the test plan, which are verified, how evidence is recorded, and what is outside the assessment.

Resource What it can contribute to procurement What it does not establish by itself
OWASP AISVS AI-specific, testable security requirements for design, development, deployment, monitoring, and retirement. It can be used as a verification framework for penetration tests, red-team exercises, audits, and procurement. A provider’s competence or the security of your system simply because a proposal mentions the standard. General application, infrastructure, and supply-chain security should be addressed in parallel.
NIST AI RMF A voluntary risk-management framework for incorporating trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use, and evaluation of AI products, services, and systems. A vendor certification. The framework is being revised, so confirm the applicable edition and any newer profile when procuring.
NIST RMF Assess step A useful model for asking whether controls are implemented correctly, operate as intended, and meet security and privacy requirements, with plans, reports, and remediation actions as assessment outcomes. A substitute for agreeing your own system scope, approval boundaries, and business-specific risks.

Know what AISVS currently specifies

The OWASP Foundation’s AISVS page reports that version 1.0, released in June 2026, contains 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices. Each requirement has a verification level of 1, 2, or 3. The standard is vendor-neutral and free to use, and focuses on AI and machine-learning security. It assumes general application, infrastructure, and supply-chain security are addressed in parallel.

Use those details to ask a provider which requirements and verification levels are relevant to the engagement, rather than asking it to claim blanket “AISVS compliance.” The scope and evidence still matter: a requirement cannot be treated as verified merely because it appears in a mapping document.

Use NIST resources with the right expectations

NIST AI RMF 1.0 was released on January 26, 2023. NIST describes the framework as voluntary and says it is being revised. Since editions and profiles can change, confirm which version applies to your procurement and record that version in the request for proposal or contract.

NIST’s AI Metrology Center can help organizations explore methodologies and metrics for testing, evaluation, verification, and validation (TEVV). NIST explicitly cautions that listing a methodology, metric, or tool is not an endorsement, validation, or determination of suitability. Use a listing as a starting point for evaluation, not as evidence that a particular provider or tool is right for your system.

Compare providers with one common request for proposal

Send the same system description, scope assumptions, authorization expectations, and questions to each candidate. A common request for proposal (RFP) makes it easier to see whether two quotes cover the same work. It also exposes differences that day rates and headline prices conceal.

Ask each provider to answer these questions

  • Scope and fit: Which models, applications, RAG components, agent tools, integrations, data, user groups, and workflows does the proposed plan cover? What is excluded? Does the work include business logic and relevant conventional application or security controls alongside AI-specific tests?
  • Threat model and method: What realistic abuse cases apply to this system, and how will the team test beyond prompt-only jailbreaks? Which activities will be automated, which will involve manual adversarial work, and how will results be validated?
  • Framework mapping: Can the provider map test cases and findings to relevant OWASP AISVS requirements, OWASP AI guidance, NIST AI RMF outcomes, or your own control set? What does the mapping demonstrate, and what remains outside it?
  • Authorization and safety: What named boundaries, approvals, accounts, sandbox conditions, prohibited actions, escalation contacts, data-handling terms, and stop conditions does the provider need?
  • People and quality review: Who will do the work, what relevant experience will they bring, and how will their work be reviewed? Ask whether a product or implementation relationship could affect the assessor’s independence. These are buyer questions, not a claim that any particular individual has been certified.
  • Evidence and deliverables: Will the final report identify reproducible evidence, affected components, test conditions, limitations, business impact, severity rationale, prioritized fixes, and retest recommendations?
  • Cost and follow-up: What work, reporting, remediation support, and retesting are included in the total cost? What would change the scope or price?

Request a redacted sample report so you can examine the actual level of detail. A polished proposal is not proof that the eventual findings will be useful. Look for a clear path from observed behavior to affected component, business impact, and a practical corrective action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare scope and deliverables before price

Build a side-by-side comparison using the written proposals. Record what each provider will assess, the test approach, the people assigned, framework mapping, safety controls, evidence and report contents, remediation support, and retest terms. Mark differences in coverage rather than assuming that similar service names mean equivalent engagements.

Then compare total cost against the actual scope and expected risk reduction. Do not select on day rate alone: a lower rate can reflect a narrower test plan, less reporting, or no follow-up. OWASP’s guide says costs should correlate with measurable risk reduction, clear reporting, and prioritized remediation guidance. Ask providers to explain the relationship between price, work performed, and deliverables.

Judge the closeout by whether the findings can be acted on

An assessment is useful when it leaves the business able to understand what was examined, what was found, what could not be tested, and what to do next. Agree on deliverables before work begins so that “final report” does not become an undefined promise.

Agree on the minimum evidence trail

For each finding, expect enough information for your team to understand and validate the issue: affected components, relevant conditions, reproducible evidence, impact in your business context, and a reasoned severity assessment. A report should distinguish observed results from assumptions and explain limitations or coverage gaps that affect interpretation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask how findings will be prioritized and what remediation guidance will look like. A label such as “high” is not actionable on its own; the report should explain why the issue matters to your system and identify a practical path for addressing it. Where the provider cannot establish impact or reproduce a behavior, that uncertainty should be stated plainly rather than converted into an unsupported conclusion.

Agree on remediation and retesting

Decide whether the engagement includes a remediation briefing, support for technical questions, or a retest after fixes. Specify what a retest will cover and what evidence you will receive. A retest is a separate verification activity: it should establish whether the reported issue was addressed under the agreed conditions, not silently imply that the entire system has been reassessed.

NIST’s RMF assessment model includes selecting an assessment team, approving an assessment plan, reporting results, taking remediation actions, and updating plans. That lifecycle is a practical procurement check: a proposal should not end at a list of vulnerabilities if your organization needs a route from assessment to corrective work.

Run the selection in a deliberate sequence

  1. Inventory the system. Record models, interfaces, retrieval sources, tools, integrations, sensitive data, users, permissions, and critical workflows. Note deployment and operating context where known.
  2. Set the scope. Identify included environments and components, explicit exclusions, and the business risks that matter most. Resolve unclear ownership of connected services before inviting providers to test them.
  3. Approve the rules of engagement. Define authorization, accounts, test data, sandbox expectations, prohibited actions, escalation contacts, handling requirements, and stop conditions in writing.
  4. Issue a common RFP. Send each candidate the same scope and questions on architecture fit, threat model, methods, framework mapping, personnel, safety, evidence, deliverables, and follow-up.
  5. Review the proposed work, not just the credentials. Ask candidates to walk through how their plan addresses your actual attack surface. Investigate generic prompt-only plans, unexplained exclusions, unclear safety controls, and reports that lack reproducible evidence.
  6. Compare total value and contract terms. Match cost to scope, reporting, remediation assistance, and retesting. Confirm who will perform and review the work, what changes require approval, and how findings and data will be handled.
  7. Approve the plan and prepare the environment. Confirm access, test accounts, points of contact, monitoring, test data, and any safety gates before testing begins. Keep the agreed scope and escalation route available to the internal team.
  8. Close the loop. Review findings with the provider, assign remediation owners, document accepted risks or unresolved limitations, and carry out agreed retesting. Update the assessment plan if the system or its permissions change materially.

When a provider recommendation is premature

There is no responsible universal shortlist without knowing the buyer’s geography, sector and regulatory context, AI architecture, deployment model, risk tolerance, and budget. Those factors affect the relevant expertise, scope, legal and operational constraints, and engagement terms. Gather them before comparing named providers, and verify provider qualifications, availability, contract terms, the current AISVS version, and the applicable NIST AI RMF edition at the time of purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The buyer’s goal is not to purchase a familiar label or a framework citation. It is to commission an authorized assessment that tests the system’s real exposure, produces evidence your team can evaluate, and gives the organization a workable path to reduce risk.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
