Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor Windows Copilot+ features, look first for a PC with an NPU rated above 40 TOPS—but treat that as an eligibility check, not a guarantee of speed for every AI task. The best choice depends on the exact features and apps you plan to use, whether they support the PC’s processor and acceleration paths, and how well the rest of the computer fits your needs.
What “local AI” means on a PC
Local inference means some or all of an AI model runs on the computer rather than relying entirely on a remote service. For example, Microsoft describes Phi Silica as a small language model optimized for the NPU in supported Copilot+ PCs, with uses such as text understanding, summarization, rewriting, and short-form generation. Microsoft also documents Windows AI components for local image processing, transformation, and creation. These capabilities do not mean every AI app—or every Copilot feature—works offline. Microsoft’s Windows AI components documentation describes the supported components.

An NPU is a processor specialized for AI operations, but local AI is not limited to NPUs. Windows ML can use CPU, GPU, or NPU acceleration, and Windows execution providers support hardware from Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, and NVIDIA. Windows may also use another compatible compute backend when an accelerator cannot run a particular workload. What matters is whether the software supports your PC’s chip, drivers, model format, and acceleration route—not just the NPU figure. See Intel’s Windows ML overview and Microsoft’s execution-provider documentation.
Which specifications matter most?
NPU capability and Copilot+ eligibility
Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as Windows 11 computers with an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Its developer guide says many new Windows AI features require an NPU with 40+ TOPS. If those features are a priority, check the exact PC configuration and NPU capability rather than relying on a processor-family name or a general “AI PC” label. Microsoft lists examples of Copilot+ hardware based on Snapdragon, AMD Ryzen AI 300, and Intel Core Ultra 200V families. The Copilot+ PCs developer guide explains the threshold and platform examples.

Application and model compatibility
Check the requirements for each app you expect to use. Confirm which processors and acceleration backends it supports, along with its Windows version, driver, model-format, and memory requirements. A Windows feature’s compatibility does not establish compatibility for a third-party app, and the reverse is also true.
Memory and storage for your workload
There is no single RAM or storage amount that suits every local AI workload. Requirements depend on the applications and models you intend to run, as well as the space needed for Windows, other apps, and your files. Use the software’s stated requirements as your baseline; avoid assuming that a Copilot+ label guarantees capacity for a separate model or development workload. Intel’s Windows ML documentation gives memory guidance for particular acceleration paths, not a universal minimum for all local AI use.

CPU, GPU, and the rest of the computer
Some software may rely on the CPU or GPU instead of the NPU, or use a different supported backend. Consider the PC as a whole: battery, display, ports, keyboard, weight, warranty, upgradeability, and price may matter more to your everyday use than a higher AI specification. Compare the precise configurations available in your market, not just model-family names.

How to choose an AI PC
- List the tasks you want to do. Be specific: for example, live captions or translation, image editing or generation, local summarization, running a developer model, or using a particular third-party AI app.
- Check requirements for each feature and app. Verify supported hardware, operating-system version, model, drivers, and memory. Do not assume that a Windows feature and a separate application share the same requirements.
- Decide whether Copilot+ features are essential. If they are, verify that the exact configuration has an NPU meeting Microsoft’s documented 40+ TOPS threshold. The Copilot+ designation is a useful eligibility marker for many Windows features, not a universal local-AI performance rating.
- Compare workload-relevant performance evidence. TOPS is a stated operations rate; by itself it does not establish app speed, supported model size, image quality, or battery impact. Those outcomes also depend on hardware, software, drivers, model format, precision, and workload. If performance is central, seek measurements for the app and task you care about rather than inferring results from TOPS.
- Check feature availability where you live. Confirm the feature, language, market, and Windows version you need. Microsoft says Copilot+ experiences can vary by device and market and may require Windows updates.
- Balance AI capability against everyday needs. Compare memory, storage, screen, battery, ports, keyboard, weight, warranty, upgrade options, and price across the exact configurations you can buy.
How to compare two AI PCs
| Comparison | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Copilot+ feature eligibility | Exact NPU capability and whether the Windows feature you want requires Copilot+ hardware. Microsoft’s developer guide describes the threshold. |
| App compatibility | Supported CPU, SoC, GPU or NPU backend, drivers, model formats, Windows version, and app-specific requirements. Microsoft’s execution-provider documentation describes supported execution paths. |
| Workload performance | Measurements for the task and model you intend to use. TOPS alone does not establish real application performance. |
| Memory and storage | The app’s and model’s requirements, plus room for files and other software. There is no universal threshold for every local AI workload. |
| Features and lifecycle | Windows version, feature rollout, supported language and region, update needs, and any compatibility-layer requirements. Microsoft’s March 31, 2025 announcement described selected features expanding across AMD Ryzen AI 300, Intel Core Ultra 200V, and Snapdragon X Series devices; it is not a complete current feature matrix. |
| Everyday fit | Price, battery, display, ports, weight, keyboard, warranty, and upgradeability for the exact configuration and market listing. |
Check availability before buying
Copilot+ experiences can vary by device and market, and some may depend on Windows updates. In a March 31, 2025 announcement, Microsoft described selected features extending across AMD Ryzen AI 300, Intel Core Ultra 200V, and Snapdragon X Series devices, with availability rolling out in stages. That announcement establishes expansion at that time, not the availability of every feature on every PC today. Check the current feature details for your region and intended Windows version. Microsoft’s PC listings also note that specifications can change and products may not be available in every market.
