Choose a context window from the largest complete request you actually send—not from the biggest number in a model’s marketing page. Add the tokens in your instructions, conversation history, files, code, images or other media, the answer you need, and (for reasoning models) hidden reasoning. Then leave a safety margin. A 128K window can be ideal for a focused task, 200K gives more room for large projects, and 1M is useful for very large codebases or document collections, but a larger limit does not guarantee better recall, lower cost, or better answers.
What a context window is—and what it is not
A context window is the maximum number of tokens available to one request. OpenAI defines it as the maximum number of tokens that can be used in a single request. Google describes the window as the combined input and output limit. In practice, the budget can include:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Your system and developer instructions.
- The current user prompt.
- Earlier turns included in the conversation.
- Attached documents, source code, tables and examples.
- Images, video and audio converted into tokens.
- The visible answer generated by the model.
- Hidden reasoning or “thinking” tokens on models that use them.
That means a model advertised as “128K context” does not necessarily accept 128,000 tokens of files plus a 10,000-token answer. The answer and, where applicable, reasoning must fit in the same total budget. Interfaces may impose smaller limits than the underlying API, and providers can change limits by model snapshot, plan, region or account tier.

Once a request ends, the model does not automatically retain every token for the next request. A chat application may show earlier messages again, summarize them, or retrieve selected files, but that is an application feature rather than proof that the model can permanently remember a whole project.

Start with the size of your largest real request
Use the largest request you expect to send in normal operation, not an average prompt. Include the worst-case conversation history and the biggest combination of files a user can attach. A practical estimate is:
required context = input tokens + visible output tokens + reasoning reserve + safety margin
For example, suppose a code-review request contains 70,000 tokens of source, 8,000 tokens of instructions and history, and you need a 6,000-token review. A non-reasoning model would need at least 84,000 tokens before a margin. If the model uses hidden reasoning, reserve additional capacity; OpenAI recommends reserving at least 25,000 tokens for reasoning and outputs while experimenting with reasoning models. A 128K limit may therefore be workable, but only if the actual output and reasoning stay within that reserve. A request close to the ceiling is fragile: a slightly longer file, an extra chat turn or a longer answer can trigger truncation or an incomplete response.

Tokenize samples instead of counting characters
Tokens are not words or bytes. English text, source code, JSON, languages with different writing systems and formatted tables tokenize differently. Gather representative samples and use the provider’s tokenizer or counting endpoint. Google model metadata exposes input_token_limit and output_token_limit. Anthropic recommends its token-counting API. Measure the actual file types you send, including markup, comments, line numbers and serialized tool results.
For multimodal requests, count every modality together. Google’s token guidance states that text, images, video and audio are tokenized, so a short written prompt can still consume substantial context when it includes media. Do not estimate a video or a high-resolution image as if it were a few words.

How much context do common workloads need?
The right capacity depends on the payload, the answer length and how much history you keep. These are planning ranges, not guarantees about model quality.
| Workload | Typical context strategy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Single email, short article or small analysis | 8K–32K is often sufficient | Most of the budget remains available for a clear answer and follow-up. |
| One long report, contract set or technical chapter | 32K–128K | Enough room for the source plus instructions, citations and a useful response. |
| Several large reports or a substantial repository slice | 128K–200K | Reduces splitting, but still requires filtering and a response reserve. |
| Large repository, many manuals or multiple books | 200K–1M | Can place a broad corpus in one request, subject to cost, latency and retrieval quality. |
| Entire very large codebase or mixed media archive | 1M-plus, or retrieval in stages | A huge limit is useful only when the model and interface support it and the model can find the relevant parts reliably. |
Google describes 1M-plus-token Gemini windows as roughly enough for 50,000 lines of code or eight average English novels in one context. Those are scale examples, not a promise that every model will understand every line equally well. A repository with generated files, vendored dependencies and duplicated documentation can consume that allowance without improving the answer.

| Window size | Best fit | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| 128K | Focused document analysis, a bounded code review, or a long conversation with deliberate history management | Less room for hidden reasoning, long answers and growth in attached material |
| 200K | Large document sets and broad project slices when you want fewer retrieval steps | Still not the whole internet or an unlimited repository; plan output and cost |
| 1M | Very large codebases, many manuals, or several books in a single request | Higher latency and cost may apply, and attention or retrieval accuracy can fall as the prompt grows |
Moving from 128K to 200K gives 56.25% more nominal capacity; moving from 200K to 1M gives five times as much. Those arithmetic differences do not translate directly into five times the useful work. Long-context models can technically ingest a corpus yet miss a detail buried in the middle, weigh repeated or irrelevant passages heavily, or produce an expensive answer that a smaller retrieved context would have handled better.
Provider limits are not interchangeable
OpenAI models
OpenAI documents context as a total budget for input, output and, where applicable, reasoning. In its example, gpt-4o-2024-08-06 has a 128K total context and a maximum output of 16,384 tokens. The output cap is separate from the total: a request with a very large input cannot also assume the full 16,384-token answer if the combined total would exceed 128K. OpenAI directs users to the exact model documentation for current context, token and output caps, because these values vary by model and snapshot.
Anthropic models
Anthropic’s help documentation describes 200K context for paid Claude plans, with a 500K Enterprise option for Claude Sonnet 4. Its API documentation says Sonnet 4 can ingest 1M tokens, while other models support 200K or more. Consumer-plan and API limits are therefore not interchangeable. Anthropic also notes that thinking tokens count toward the limit, so a nominal input allowance is not the same as usable file capacity.

Google Gemini models
Google says many Gemini models have context windows of 1M tokens or more. Its documentation gives the practical scale of about 50,000 lines of code or eight average English novels. The model metadata reports separate input and output limits, and Google’s token guide counts text, images, video and audio together. Check the exact model metadata and the interface you are using before relying on the headline number.

A repeatable method for sizing your model
- Define the largest allowed request. List the maximum conversation turns, file sizes, code directories, examples, tool results and media a user can submit. Do not rely on an average case.
- Collect representative files. Include the formats and languages you actually use. A token count for plain English will not predict a minified JavaScript bundle, a CSV export or an image-heavy PDF.
- Count input tokens with the provider’s tool. Use a tokenizer or counting endpoint, and include system instructions and serialized tool calls. For Gemini, inspect
input_token_limit; for Anthropic, use its token-counting API. - Set the visible answer budget. Decide whether you need a 1,000-token answer, a 6,000-token report or a long generated file. Subtract that amount from the total window.
- Add reasoning headroom. For reasoning models, reserve additional space. OpenAI’s guidance is to reserve at least 25,000 tokens for reasoning and outputs while experimenting.
- Add a safety margin. Leave room for small changes, formatting overhead, an extra attachment and a longer-than-usual answer. Avoid designing for 99–100% utilization.
- Test the boundary. Send requests near the planned maximum and verify whether the API rejects them, truncates history, shortens the answer or returns an incomplete result. Test both the smallest and largest model snapshots you may deploy.
- Choose a fallback. Decide in advance whether to retrieve fewer passages, summarize older turns, split the job into stages or switch to a larger model when the estimate is exceeded.
When a smaller curated context beats a giant prompt
Long context is most valuable when the task genuinely requires broad simultaneous access—for example, checking consistency across many chapters or tracing interfaces across distant parts of a repository. For focused questions, retrieval or filtering is often better:
- Retrieval: search for relevant files or passages, then send only the top results.
- Filtering: exclude generated output, dependencies, binaries, duplicate documents and irrelevant directories.
- Rolling summaries: summarize completed conversation sections and retain decisions, constraints and unresolved issues.
- Hierarchical analysis: summarize each document or module first, then ask a second request to compare those summaries.
- Context caching: where a provider supports it, cache a stable corpus instead of resending it, while checking cache pricing, expiry and model restrictions.
These methods reduce input cost and latency and can improve attention by putting the important evidence in a smaller, clearer set. They can also lose details during summarization, so keep links or identifiers that let a later step retrieve the original passage.
Context size does not guarantee recall or answer quality
A model can accept a million tokens and still fail to use a fact buried among hundreds of thousands of irrelevant tokens. Performance depends on where evidence appears, how often it is repeated, whether instructions conflict, and how well the model was trained and evaluated for long-context retrieval. Evaluate your own workload with questions whose answers are known and placed at the beginning, middle and end of the context.

Measure more than whether the request succeeds. Track factual accuracy, citation or line-reference accuracy, missed requirements, answer completeness, latency, input and output cost, and failure rates near the limit. Compare a full-context request with a retrieved version. If the smaller prompt is equally accurate and substantially faster or cheaper, the larger window is not providing useful value for that workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cost, latency and availability trade-offs
Every additional input token can affect billing under a provider’s pricing rules, and long requests generally take longer to upload, process and return. A large context can also consume rate-limit capacity faster, reducing how many concurrent requests your application can serve. Caching may lower repeated-input cost, but cache eligibility and pricing are provider-specific.
Plan and interface availability matters as much as the model’s API specification. A consumer chat plan may expose a different limit from the API; an Enterprise option may have a larger window; a model may be unavailable in a particular region; and an application wrapper may enforce its own maximum. Verify the account, endpoint, model ID, region and rate limits you will actually use.
Why a long prompt gets truncated or returns an incomplete answer
The total, not just the input, exceeded the limit
History, files, output and reasoning are added together. Reduce the requested answer length, remove old turns or select a larger model.
The chat interface has a smaller cap
An app can enforce a lower limit than its underlying API. Check that product’s plan documentation and test through the exact interface used by your team.
Best Value
Automatic history management removed content
Some clients summarize or drop older messages to stay within budget. Preserve important decisions in a compact project summary and keep source files retrievable.
The output cap was too low
A request can fit its input yet stop early because the model’s maximum output is smaller than the answer you requested. OpenAI’s documented example pairs a 128K total with a 16,384-token maximum output; do not assume every model has the same ratio.
Reasoning consumed the reserve
Thinking tokens can count toward the total even when they are not shown. Leave the recommended headroom and lower the visible answer budget before increasing input.
A file was counted differently than expected
Markup, tables, code, non-English text and media can tokenize unexpectedly. Recount the exact serialized payload rather than estimating from file size.
Decision examples
Reviewing one 300-page policy collection
Tokenize the full collection, add instructions and reserve enough output for findings and references. If the total fits comfortably under 128K, a larger model adds little capacity value. If it approaches the limit, retrieve the clauses relevant to each question or move to a 200K option.
Understanding a 50,000-line codebase
Google’s documentation uses 50,000 lines as an approximate 1M-token scale example, but line length and language change the count. Exclude dependencies and generated files, measure the repository, and test whether the model can locate definitions and call sites. If most questions concern one service, retrieval over a smaller slice may be faster and more accurate than sending the whole repository.
Maintaining a long-running support conversation
Do not keep every turn forever. Store a structured summary of the customer’s goals, environment, decisions and unresolved issues, then retrieve the relevant original messages when needed. Reserve tokens for the actual response and for reasoning rather than spending the entire window on history.
A practical selection checklist
- What is the largest input in tokens after real tokenization?
- How many tokens must the visible answer contain?
- Does the model use hidden reasoning, and how much reserve will you keep?
- Do images, audio or video add to the same budget?
- What are the exact input and output limits for this model ID and snapshot?
- Is the limit different in the consumer app, API, Enterprise plan or region?
- What will the request cost at peak size, and how will caching affect it?
- What latency and rate-limit impact can your users tolerate?
- Have you tested retrieval accuracy at the beginning, middle and end of a long context?
- What is your fallback when the request exceeds the planned limit?
The bottom line for choosing 128K, 200K or 1M
Choose the smallest window that fits your largest measured request with a clear reserve for the answer, reasoning and growth. Start around 128K for bounded documents and code reviews, consider 200K when your normal payload genuinely exceeds that range, and use 1M-plus for workloads that benefit from seeing a very large corpus at once. Validate the exact model, plan and interface, then compare long-context accuracy and cost with a retrieval-based design. The number is a capacity limit—not a guarantee of memory, comprehension or value.
