The right AI memory system depends on what your assistant must remember, for how long, and who can inspect or erase it. Start by separating short-term conversation state from long-term user context. Then compare the memory unit, retrieval method, scope boundaries, correction and deletion behavior, privacy controls, security, and the infrastructure your team must operate. There is no evidence-backed universal winner; the best choice is the one that answers your real questions accurately without retaining more than it should.
What an AI memory system actually stores
“Memory” is an umbrella term for several different mechanisms. Treating them as one feature causes design and buying mistakes. A system may store recent messages for the active thread, compress old messages into a summary, extract durable facts such as preferences, or build links between people, projects, and events. A document retrieval index may supply useful context without being personal memory at all.

Conversation or working state
Working state contains the recent messages, tool results, pending decisions, and task status needed to continue one conversation. It is usually associated with a thread or session. Durable checkpointing lets an application resume after a process restarts, but checkpointing a thread does not mean every message should become a permanent user profile.
Summary memory
A summary compresses earlier conversation so the model has room for new turns. It saves context-window space, but it can omit wording, dates, or minor details. OpenAI describes its ChatGPT memory summary as high-level and says it may omit information. Treat a summary as continuity assistance, not as a complete transcript or authoritative record.

Fact or profile memory
Fact memory keeps selected durable information: a dietary preference, a recurring goal, a confirmed project decision, or an account attribute. Mem0’s documented default extracts memories instead of storing a verbatim transcript. Extraction reduces retrieval noise, but every extracted fact needs a way to be corrected when it becomes stale.
Relational or graph memory
Graph memory links entities and relationships, such as a person, a project, a decision, and the date that decision changed. Zep documents building user-level knowledge-graph memory from chat messages. Mem0 documents graph memory on its managed platform. Graph structure can help with multi-hop and relationship questions, but its presence does not prove better answers for every workload.
Retrieval corpus
A retrieval corpus is a set of documents or other source material searched to supply context. Company policies, manuals, and project files can be essential to an assistant without belonging in a personal profile. LangGraph’s long-term store supports user- or application-specific data, while Zep’s guidance distinguishes user memory from business data and documents. Define those boundaries before indexing anything.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Short-term state and long-term memory solve different problems
LangGraph documents two horizons. Short-term memory is thread-level persistence for a multi-turn interaction. Long-term memory stores user-specific or application-level data across conversations. A useful architecture often uses both: a checkpoint for the active task and a separately scoped store for durable facts.
Do not promote every turn into long-term memory. A temporary instruction, an unverified guess, or a secret pasted while debugging may be necessary for the current task but inappropriate to retain. Conversely, a stable preference may need to survive a new session even after the old thread is archived.
Comparison framework: the questions that determine fit
Use the same questions for every candidate. Broad labels such as “long-term memory” conceal important differences in storage, retrieval, and control.
| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Memory unit | Does it retain raw messages, summaries, extracted facts, entity relationships, or a combination? Can exact source text be preserved when wording matters? |
| Horizon and scope | Is data limited to one thread, tied to one user across sessions, shared by an application, or available to a group? How are those boundaries enforced? |
| Retrieval | Does selection use recency, semantic similarity, exact terms, entity links, temporal signals, or a hybrid? Can you inspect why an item was returned? |
| Updating and forgetting | Can a user correct a stale fact, explicitly update or delete it, remove a conversation, and discover whether copies remain in logs, indexes, summaries, or backups? |
| User control | Can people view, correct, suppress, or disable memories? Are controls identical across plan, platform, region, and workspace? |
| Privacy and governance | What sensitive content may enter the system? What is retained, who administers access, and what are the model-training and retention rules for the actual account or service? |
| Prompt security | Is retrieved text treated as untrusted data rather than elevated into system or developer instructions? |
| Operations | Who runs the database, embeddings, graph, migrations, monitoring, backups, and deletion workflows? Is it managed or self-hosted? |
| Evaluation | Can you test recall, correction, temporal, multi-hop, isolation, and forgetting tasks using representative data? |
Choosing a system as a personal-assistant user
If you are not building software, a native assistant memory feature is usually the simplest starting point. The important question is not whether a product advertises “memory,” but whether you can see and control what it retains.

What ChatGPT’s memory illustrates
OpenAI says ChatGPT Memory can use relevant preferences and details from chats and other available sources. Depending on plan and region, sources may include past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, Library files, or connected-app content. It does not retain every detail, and what is considered relevant can change.
Controls vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Where the controls are available, users may be able to review sources, correct information, delete saved memories, or turn memory off. Verify the settings shown in your own account rather than assuming that another plan has the same options.
Deletion is a multi-step question
Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory. OpenAI’s Help Center says removal may require deleting both the saved memory and the originating chat, plus clearing other sources where the same information remains. Deletion updates can take time, and OpenAI says logs of deleted memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
Turning off “Reference chat history” schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days; the original chats remain unless you delete them separately. Ask four questions before relying on a memory control: what is removed immediately, what is scheduled, what source records remain, and whether backups or audit logs have a different lifecycle.

Personal accounts and workspaces are not interchangeable
OpenAI says personal-account chats and remembered information may be used for model improvement when “Improve the model for everyone” is enabled. It says ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspace content is not used to train models by default. The same Help Center guidance says improved memory is disabled by default in ChatGPT for Healthcare and ChatGPT Enterprise with Regulated Workspace, and that this feature is not covered under the BAA. Regulated users should follow the specific workspace guidance and verify current settings and contractual terms.
Developer pattern: framework-native persistence
LangGraph’s documented pattern gives an application explicit control over state. An in-memory checkpointer is useful for examples; the documentation recommends a database-backed checkpointer in production, including a Postgres example. Its long-term store can support semantic search, and the documentation covers summarization, trimming, message deletion, checkpoint management, database setup, and migrations.
This control comes with ownership. Your team must define schemas, identity scopes, access checks, backups, migrations, retention schedules, deletion propagation, and monitoring. A database-backed checkpointer can preserve an active thread, while a separate long-term namespace can hold user facts. Keep those stores distinct so a request to delete a profile fact does not accidentally erase the audit trail needed for an active job—or leave the fact duplicated in a summary.

Developer pattern: specialized memory APIs
Mem0’s extraction-and-search flow
Mem0 documents a two-part loop. First, add useful interactions so the system extracts and stores durable facts. Before the next model call, search for relevant memories and include the useful results in the prompt. The default behavior is extracted memory rather than a verbatim transcript.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDocumented retrieval signals include semantic similarity, keyword matching, entity overlap, and temporal scoring. The described storage components include SQL facts and metadata, vector embeddings, and entity storage. Managed Platform behavior and open-source retrieval are configured differently, so confirm which component you are operating and which behavior is enabled.
Mem0 says extraction is additive when a fact changes and advises explicit update or delete operations for corrections or removal. Scope searches with identifiers such as user, agent, or run. Do not store secrets, raw credentials, or unredacted sensitive data merely because the API accepts text.
Zep’s graph-oriented flow
Zep’s v2 Memory API accepts session messages and builds user-level knowledge-graph memory. Its high-level memory.get operation selects relevant context using the latest session messages, while also retrieving facts derived from other sessions for that user. Its graph API provides more control over search and context construction.
Zep documents a useful ingestion choice: assistant messages can be excluded from graph ingestion while still being supplied as context for interpreting short user replies. That can prevent the assistant’s own guesses from becoming durable user facts, but it requires deliberate configuration and testing.
The documentation page is explicitly for Zep v2 and points to other version indexes. Confirm the current API version, migration guidance, and retention behavior before committing to an integration.
Vector database or knowledge graph?
A vector index and a knowledge graph answer different retrieval needs. A vector search is a natural fit when the assistant needs semantically similar passages or facts despite wording differences. Keyword matching helps with exact names, codes, and phrases. A graph represents entities and edges, which can help answer relationship and multi-hop questions. Temporal scoring helps when the current value must be distinguished from an older one.

| Question pattern | Retrieval emphasis to evaluate | Failure to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| “What food do I usually avoid?” | Semantic and fact retrieval, scoped to the user | A one-time exception is treated as a permanent preference |
| “What did we decide about project A?” | Exact terms plus semantic search and project scope | A similarly named project leaks into the answer |
| “Who approved the change that replaced the old deadline?” | Entity links and temporal reasoning | The system returns an obsolete relationship |
| “When did my preference change?” | Timestamped facts and ordered events | The latest fact is returned without its effective date |
| “Forget my home address.” | Direct identity lookup and deletion workflow | A copy survives in summaries, embeddings, logs, or backups |
Do not select a graph simply because it sounds more sophisticated, or a vector store simply because it is familiar. Run both approaches against the questions your assistant must answer and record stale, missing, and cross-user retrieval—not only successful answers.
Security: retrieved memory is data, not authority
Memory can contain user text, documents, tool output, or content inserted by an external party. Zep warns that retrieved text may include end-user, document, tool, or other external material. Send that material through the model provider’s untrusted-data channel and keep it out of privileged system or developer instruction channels.

Test prompt-injection resistance explicitly. A stored note saying “ignore previous instructions” must remain a quoted data item, not become an instruction. Apply authorization before retrieval, not after generation: a model should never receive another user’s memory and be expected to hide it by wording alone.
- Assign a stable, non-guessable scope key for each user, tenant, project, and run as needed.
- Separate identity and authorization metadata from free-form memory text.
- Redact secrets and credentials before extraction or indexing.
- Log which memory identifiers were retrieved, while protecting the logs themselves.
- Provide a deletion job that covers primary records, derived embeddings, graph edges, summaries, caches, and applicable backups.
How to evaluate candidates with your own test set
Vendor examples and benchmark claims are useful starting points, not guarantees. Build a small, versioned evaluation set from realistic conversations and score both correct and harmful behavior.
- Define the memory contract. Write down what may persist, what must remain thread-only, retention periods, permitted scopes, and who may delete or correct data.
- Create canonical scenarios. Include a stable preference, a correction, a dated change, a project-specific decision, a multi-hop relationship, a short reply that needs prior context, and an explicit forget request.
- Plant distractors. Use similarly named projects, conflicting old values, another user’s records, and malicious text in a document or tool result.
- Test the full lifecycle. Add a fact, retrieve it, correct it, retrieve again, delete it, and search every derived store for remnants. Measure the time until deletion is effective.
- Inspect provenance. Record which memory items were returned, their timestamps and scopes, and whether the answer reflects the latest valid value.
- Repeat after changes. Re-run the set when models, prompts, embedding models, retrieval settings, schemas, or vendor API versions change.
Useful metrics include recall of required facts, precision of returned memories, correction accuracy, temporal accuracy, cross-user isolation, deletion completeness, latency, and token usage. A system that remembers everything but cannot forget is not a successful personal assistant.
What published benchmark numbers do—and do not—tell you
The 2025 Mem0 paper reports results on the LOCOMO benchmark. It reports a 26% relative improvement in the LLM-as-a-Judge metric over the compared OpenAI system, around a 2% higher overall score for Mem0 with graph memory than its base configuration, a 91% lower p95 latency, and more than 90% token-cost savings versus the paper’s full-context method.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling a transcript “memory”
A complete transcript may be expensive to retrieve and may include irrelevant or sensitive material. Decide whether the use case needs exact quotations, a summary, extracted facts, or linked entities, and store each in an appropriate layer.
Letting every assistant message become a fact
Assistant-generated guesses can be mistaken for user-confirmed information. Filter what enters durable memory, attach provenance and timestamps, and require explicit confirmation for high-impact attributes.
Using one global namespace
A single shared index makes accidental disclosure likely. Scope by user and, where necessary, tenant, project, agent, and run. Verify isolation with adversarial tests rather than relying on a prompt instruction.

Choosing by feature count
Graph search, temporal scoring, and multiple storage back ends are capabilities, not proof of quality. Favor the smallest architecture that meets your tested requirements and that your team can operate reliably.
Ignoring version and plan differences
Controls and APIs change. Record the product version, model, plan, region, workspace type, and configuration in evaluation results, then re-test after upgrades.
Quick Recap
A practical selection checklist
- Have you separated thread state, summaries, durable facts, graph relationships, and document retrieval?
- Do you know exactly which users, projects, or applications can read each memory?
- Can a person inspect, correct, suppress, and delete retained information?
- Does deletion reach summaries, vectors, graph data, caches, logs, and backups?
- Can retrieval combine the signals your questions require: recency, semantics, exact terms, entities, and time?
- Are external and retrieved texts confined to untrusted-data channels?
- Who operates the database, migrations, backups, monitoring, and incident response?
- Have you tested stale facts, corrections, dates, multi-hop questions, isolation, and forgetting?
- Are benchmark claims labeled with their metric, baseline, benchmark, date, and source?
- Have you verified current plan, region, workspace, API version, retention, and training settings?
