Choose an AI agent platform by proving five things before you deploy: every agent and user has a clearly defined identity, permissions are limited to the exact tools and data required, sessions cannot be confused between users or tenants, audit records contain enough context to investigate actions, and your team can export and retain that evidence. A feature labelled “audit logging” is not enough if it stores only a transcript reference, omits a channel, or cannot be correlated with the identity that authorized a command.

There is no published cross-platform benchmark that establishes a universal winner. Microsoft Copilot Studio, Google Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, and AWS Bedrock Agents with AgentCore document meaningful but different controls. The right choice depends on your identity architecture, data boundaries, regulated-record requirements, deployment region, licensing, and how much session and monitoring logic your application must provide.

Start with an evidence-based decision

Evaluate a platform as a control system, not as a chatbot feature. Ask what identity is presented on every model, data, and tool call; what an administrator can restrict; what the service isolates automatically; what your application must enforce; and what an investigator can reconstruct later. Require written answers for your exact edition, region, channels, retention settings, and deployment mode.

Separate three kinds of evidence during the evaluation:

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
  • Authorization evidence: the principal, role, policy, resource, and decision that allowed or denied an operation.
  • Execution evidence: the tool, connector, command, request, result, timestamp, and session or request identifiers.
  • Conversation evidence: the prompt, response, transcript, and resources shown to the user.

A platform may provide one kind without the others. Microsoft’s Purview Audit solution, for example, records a transcript thread ID rather than the full interaction text; Microsoft describes a separate DSPM for AI capability for retrieving related chat text and accessed-resource links. Treat those as separate evidence paths when designing investigations.

Define the identities your agents will use

Give agents an explicit execution identity

Document whether each agent runs as a dedicated service principal, a shared application identity, a user-delegated identity, or a mixture. A service that authenticates the calling user does not automatically make every downstream tool call operate with that user’s permissions. Record the identity at each hop: user to agent, agent to model, agent to connector, and agent to data store.

For high-impact workflows, prefer a distinct principal per agent or tenant when operationally practical. Separate principals make revocation, anomaly detection, and forensic attribution more precise. If a shared principal is unavoidable, maintain an application-side mapping from the authenticated user and tenant to the permitted agent, session, tools, and data scopes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test identity propagation through chains

Agents increasingly call other agents, gateways, or tools. Ask whether the original user identity, authorization context, and tenant information are propagated or replaced at each hop. A chain that loses the original actor can leave an audit trail showing only a generic service account, making it difficult to prove who approved a destructive action.

A useful test case is a user who can read a document but cannot export it. Have the agent retrieve, summarize, and attempt to export that document through a second tool. Verify that the downstream tool receives the intended identity and denies the prohibited operation, and that the denial is correlated with the initiating request.

Govern identity centrally

Confirm whether administrators can inventory agents, assign owners, require approved authentication methods, and apply organization-wide policies. Google’s governance documentation describes agent visibility and inventory, identity and access controls, and security and compliance administration. Microsoft describes tenant and environment policy controls. AWS guidance combines IAM, IAM Identity Center, AgentCore Identity, gateway interceptors, and policy controls. Ask which system is authoritative when policies conflict.

Scope permissions to the smallest useful surface

Limit models, data, schemas, and tools

Least privilege must cover the agent’s execution role and every resource it can reach. Build an allow-list for models, knowledge bases, object storage locations, action-group schemas, secrets, network destinations, and APIs. Do not treat a broad role as acceptable merely because an agent is “internal.” Internal agents can still be manipulated by untrusted content or a compromised integration.

AWS Bedrock Agents documentation describes service-role permissions for model inference, action-group API schemas stored in Amazon S3, attached knowledge bases, and optional capabilities such as collaborators, provisioned throughput, guardrails, encryption, and code interpretation. It recommends omitting permissions for unused capabilities and replacing broad * agent identifiers with specific IDs after an agent is created. Apply the same review pattern to every platform: remove optional permissions, then verify that the agent fails safely when it requests an unapproved resource.

Separate read, write, and administrative actions

Use different roles or policies for retrieval, generation, mutation, and administration. A support agent may need to read a ticket and draft a reply but not close the ticket, change billing data, or create credentials. Require explicit approval or a human checkpoint for irreversible operations. Log the policy decision and the resulting action, not only the final response shown to the user.

Constrain knowledge sources and retrieval

Inventory every connected knowledge source, including indexes, file stores, databases, and web or HTTP retrieval. Verify document-level and row-level authorization where sensitive data is involved. Test whether a user can induce the agent to reveal content from another tenant by asking for a summary, citation, or hidden system context. Record the resource identifiers returned to the agent so an investigator can determine exactly what data influenced an answer.

Control connectors, actions, and publishing

Administrative controls should cover more than model selection. Microsoft describes Power Platform data policies and agent publishing controls that can govern authentication, knowledge sources, actions, connectors, skills, HTTP requests, publication channels, and triggers. Determine whether each control is organization-wide, environment-specific, agent-specific, or available only at runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build an explicit action inventory:

  • Connectors and APIs the agent may call.
  • HTTP destinations, methods, headers, and payload fields.
  • Triggers, schedules, webhooks, and event subscriptions.
  • Publication channels and external sharing settings.
  • Skills or plugins that can execute code or alter data.

Disable unused categories at the broadest policy layer, then add narrowly approved exceptions. Test both direct and indirect paths. For example, blocking a connector but leaving unrestricted HTTP requests may not reduce risk if the agent can call the same service through a URL.

Prove tenant, user, and session isolation

Do not equate authentication with isolation

A valid login proves who presented credentials; it does not prove that a supplied session identifier belongs to that person. AWS states that AgentCore Runtime validates session ID format but does not verify that a session belongs to the invoking user. In a shared-principal, multi-user design, the application must bind each authenticated user to the correct session and must not accept an untrusted client’s session ID.

This is a design responsibility, not a checkbox. Store the authenticated subject, tenant, agent, session identifier, creation time, and expiration together in a server-side record. On every invocation, derive the session from that record or verify ownership before forwarding the request. Reject mismatches, replayed sessions, expired sessions, and sessions assigned to another tenant.

Choose an isolation model deliberately

Compare separate principals per user, separate principals per tenant group, and a shared principal with strong application enforcement. AWS recommends distinct principals per user or tenant group for high-security deployments where practical. A shared model may reduce operational overhead but increases the consequences of a session-binding defect and makes attribution harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test cross-boundary attacks

Include negative tests in acceptance criteria:

  • Present a valid user token with another user’s session ID.
  • Change the tenant identifier in a request after authentication.
  • Replay a session after logout or expiration.
  • Ask an agent to retrieve another tenant’s document through a chained tool.
  • Invoke a disabled connector through an alternate action or HTTP route.

Each test should produce a denial, an attributable audit event, and no leakage in the response, error message, or telemetry.

Design an audit record that supports investigation

Required fields

For each meaningful event, require enough data to answer who, what, when, where, and with which authority. At minimum, seek:

  • Authenticated actor and effective execution principal.
  • Tenant, environment, agent, tool, connector, and resource identifiers.
  • Action or command, policy decision, result, and error details.
  • Timestamp with a documented time standard.
  • Session ID, request ID, trace ID, or equivalent correlation keys.
  • Model, agent version, or configuration revision where relevant.
  • Links to the transcript or content record when the event does not contain content.

Ask for a sample event schema, not a marketing description. Determine which fields are immutable, whether administrators can alter or delete records, and how clock skew or retries are represented.

Understand transcript versus audit records

An audit event can prove that an action occurred without preserving the conversation that led to it. Microsoft says its Copilot Studio Purview Audit solution records a transcript thread ID rather than full interaction text. The related DSPM for AI solution may retrieve chat text and links to accessed resources. Therefore, specify separate retention, access, legal-hold, and export requirements for audit events and transcripts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask whether prompts and responses are stored by default, whether sensitive fields are redacted, and whether transcript retrieval works for every channel. A thread reference that cannot be resolved after a retention period is not equivalent to a preserved conversation.

Check coverage and duplication

Microsoft notes that some channels are excluded from logging and that one action can generate multiple logged events. Map every channel, trigger, tool, and event type in your deployment. Define how your SIEM deduplicates retries and groups related events without discarding useful evidence. Require documentation of regional, licensing, retention, and configuration prerequisites.

Compare the documented platform approaches

Platform Identity and governance evidence Permission and action controls Audit and isolation considerations
Microsoft Copilot Studio Power Platform data policies, data-loss-prevention features, publishing controls, and Purview integration. Telemetry includes invocation events, tool or action calls, policy decisions, and runtime activity signals. Policies can govern authentication, knowledge sources, actions, connectors, skills, HTTP requests, publication channels, and triggers. Purview Audit records a transcript thread ID rather than full interaction text. Microsoft describes DSPM for AI for related chat text and accessed-resource links. Some channels are excluded, and one action may create multiple events.
Google Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform Governance documentation describes agent visibility and inventory, identity and access administration, security and compliance controls, agent identity, and gateways. Evaluate the exact release and configuration for resource and tool restrictions; product names and availability can change. Documentation discusses audit trails for data access and request-response logs. Verify event fields, retention, regions, and channel coverage for your deployment.
AWS Bedrock Agents with AgentCore AWS guidance combines IAM, IAM Identity Center, AgentCore Identity, gateway interceptors, Cedar-based AgentCore Policy, Secrets Manager, CloudTrail, and EventBridge. Bedrock service roles can cover model inference, S3-hosted action schemas, knowledge bases, collaborators, provisioned throughput, guardrails, encryption, and code interpretation. Unused capabilities should be omitted; broad agent-ID wildcards should be narrowed after creation. AgentCore Runtime does not verify that a supplied session ID belongs to the invoking user. The application must enforce session-to-user mapping in shared-principal designs. CloudTrail records the authenticated principal and target session ID; CloudWatch Logs can support command auditing, with request IDs for correlation.

This table describes documented control patterns, not measured performance or a ranking. Confirm current product names, regions, licensing, preview status, and schemas before signing a contract.

Assign responsibilities before deployment

Write a responsibility matrix that names the team accountable for each control. AWS explicitly assigns several safeguards to the customer, including IAM access controls, application session-to-user mapping, agent code and dependency security, command security, and network configuration. Comparable responsibilities can exist on other platforms even when the service supplies policy features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Platform team: creates approved environments, network boundaries, baseline policies, logging destinations, and agent inventories.
  • Application team: binds users to sessions, validates tenant context, handles secrets, secures code and dependencies, and implements approval gates.
  • Security team: reviews permissions, threat models prompt and tool abuse, monitors anomalies, and tests isolation.
  • Compliance and records team: defines retention, legal hold, transcript access, redaction, export, and evidence review procedures.
  • Agent owner: maintains the tool and data allow-list, tests failure modes, and removes unused capabilities after changes.

Do not accept “the provider logs it” as an ownership statement. Identify who enables collection, pays for retention, exports events, monitors failures, and investigates an alert.

Connect logs to your monitoring workflow

Verify that platform events can reach your SIEM, data lake, or case-management process without losing correlation identifiers. AWS describes CloudTrail records for runtime and API actions, CloudWatch Logs for command auditing, and request IDs that correlate the API caller with the command that ran. Ask equivalent questions of every candidate:

  1. Which service emits the event, and is collection enabled by default?
  2. Can events be delivered to a customer-controlled destination in near real time?
  3. Are actor, target resource, action, result, session, and request identifiers preserved?
  4. Can your identity provider’s subject ID be joined reliably to the event?
  5. What happens when logging is unavailable: fail closed, queue, retry, or continue silently?
  6. Can administrators detect policy changes, connector additions, agent publication, and role updates?

Build detections for unusual tool sequences, repeated denials, new destinations, privilege changes, cross-tenant attempts, and abnormal session reuse. AWS Prescriptive Guidance summarizes the operating model this way: “Effective agent operations require robust identity and permission management through identity propagation from users through agent chains, permission boundaries for agent actions and tool access, audit trails of agent decisions and actions, and circuit breakers for abnormal behavior patterns.”

Use a repeatable evaluation procedure

  1. Map a real workflow. Select one read-only use case and one high-impact action. List users, tenants, models, tools, data stores, network destinations, triggers, and publication channels.
  2. Define authorization outcomes. For every step, specify who may read, create, modify, approve, export, or delete. Mark actions that require human confirmation.
  3. Request architecture and event artifacts. Obtain role examples, policy boundaries, session behavior, sample audit events, transcript references, retention options, and channel exclusions for your edition and region.
  4. Configure the smallest permission set. Start with no optional capabilities, add only required resources, and replace wildcard resource identifiers with exact IDs where supported.
  5. Exercise identity propagation. Trace a request through every agent and tool. Confirm that the effective identity and tenant remain correct at each hop.
  6. Attack the session model. Attempt session substitution, replay, tenant changes, and direct client-supplied identifiers. Verify denial and logging.
  7. Validate audit reconstruction. Starting from an identity-provider event, reconstruct the agent invocation, tool call, policy decision, resource access, result, and transcript or content reference.
  8. Measure operational burden. Record who must configure policies, rotate secrets, review alerts, export evidence, and respond when logging or a dependency fails.
  9. Set acceptance gates. Require written evidence for isolation, permission scope, event coverage, retention, export, and responsibility before production approval.

Questions to put in a vendor evaluation

  • What identity does the agent use for each tool call, and can it act with the end user’s permissions?
  • Can each agent or tenant have a separate principal, with permissions limited to exact resources?
  • Which connectors, HTTP requests, tools, triggers, and publishing channels can administrators disable or restrict?
  • Are sessions bound to authenticated users by the service, or must the application enforce that mapping?
  • Which events include actor, resource, action, result, timestamp, and request or session identifiers?
  • Does an event contain content, a transcript reference, or neither?
  • How are transcripts stored, retained, redacted, retrieved, and placed under legal hold?
  • Which channels, event types, regions, and deployment modes are excluded from logging or isolation guarantees?
  • Can events be exported and correlated with the identity provider and SIEM?
  • Which controls are generally available in your region and license, and which are preview or separately enabled?

Common failure modes and fixes

“The user is authenticated, so the session is safe.”

Why it fails: a client can submit another session identifier unless the application checks ownership. Fix: derive or validate the session server-side, bind it to the authenticated subject and tenant, and reject mismatches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The role has access to the platform, so the agent is covered.”

Why it fails: broad roles often include unused models, data, schemas, tools, or optional features. Fix: create a per-agent allow-list, remove unused permissions, and replace wildcard resource IDs with specific identifiers.

“An audit log is the conversation.”

Why it fails: an event may contain only metadata or a transcript thread ID. Fix: verify transcript storage and retrieval separately, including excluded channels and retention behavior.

“Blocking one connector blocks the action.”

Why it fails: unrestricted HTTP, another skill, or a chained agent may provide an alternate route. Fix: inventory equivalent paths and enforce destination and method restrictions at policy and network layers.

“More events always mean better evidence.”

Why it fails: retries and multi-event actions can obscure the causal sequence. Fix: preserve request and session identifiers, define event grouping, and test your SIEM’s deduplication and correlation rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The provider owns every security control.”

Why it fails: application mapping, code, dependencies, IAM, network boundaries, retention, and monitoring may remain customer duties. Fix: approve a named responsibility matrix and test each customer-managed control in deployment.

Make the final choice

Select the platform that can demonstrate your required identity path, least-privilege policy, isolation behavior, event schema, transcript strategy, and operational ownership in your actual configuration. Favor documented, testable controls over a long feature list. If a platform cannot show whether an event contains content or only a reference, cannot explain excluded channels, or leaves session binding ambiguous, treat that uncertainty as a deployment risk and require compensating controls or a different architecture.

Recheck documentation immediately before procurement and before production changes. Microsoft security and governance documentation cited here was updated on 2026-10-07; Google’s governance page reported an update on 2026-10-06 UTC; AWS product and guidance pages were current when accessed, although update dates were not shown in the referenced passages. Product names, regions, previews, licensing, retention settings, and logging schemas can change.
