Choose a browser extension when one browser is the priority, a standalone desktop app when you want coverage beyond that browser, or a DNS filter when you want policy applied at the network-request level for devices or applications that use your configured DNS. These are different scopes, not interchangeable versions of the same tool.
Start with scope, then check browser support, control, site compatibility, maintenance, and current licensing. Microsoft’s Edge platform is also changing: in an August 7, 2026 announcement, Microsoft said consumer Manifest V2 (MV2) deprecation would begin in August 2026, target completion by the end of 2026, and be followed by enterprise deprecation in early 2027. Those are announced targets, so confirm an extension’s current status before you rely on it.

The three choices at a glance
| Approach | Where it operates | How filtering is applied | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Browser extension | Inside one supported browser | Uses the browser’s extension APIs to block requests and hide page elements | You mainly browse in one browser and want the simplest setup | Coverage and capabilities are limited by that browser’s extension platform |
| Windows desktop app | Potentially across browsers and other Windows traffic, depending on the app | Filters traffic and page content through system-level components supplied by the vendor | You need broader coverage than one browser can provide | More installation, permissions, and subscription or license decisions; coverage is vendor-specific |
| DNS filter | Any application or device that uses the configured DNS resolver | Blocks domains or answers DNS requests according to the provider’s lists and policies | You want network-level policy or coverage for devices without browser extensions | DNS cannot see every page element, and provider features, setup, and pricing vary |
A DNS service and an encrypted DNS connection are not automatically the same thing. Microsoft Edge’s Secure DNS encrypts DNS lookups, but Microsoft’s documentation does not describe Secure DNS itself as an ad blocker.

Its scope is the active browser
An extension runs within the browser that installed it. A filter enabled in Edge does not automatically filter a separate browser, a mail client, a game launcher, or an application with its own networking stack. If you move between browsers, you normally need a separately installed extension in each one, assuming that browser supports the extension.

Within its browser, an extension can combine network filtering with cosmetic filtering. Network rules stop matching requests before or during page loading; cosmetic rules hide ad containers or other elements that remain in the document. The exact balance depends on the browser APIs and the extension’s rule format.
When an extension is the sensible first step
- You use one browser for most web work.
- You want to test filtering without changing Windows networking.
- You need per-site controls, a visible block count, or an easy temporary pause.
- You are willing to check whether important sites still work after enabling it.
Extensions are also the easiest option to remove or isolate when troubleshooting. Disable the extension for one site, compare the result, and re-enable it without changing every application’s connection settings.
Permissions deserve a deliberate review
Microsoft’s Edge guidance tells users to review requested permissions when adding extensions. Read the permission panel before installation and ask whether the access matches the feature you want. An extension that needs to read and change data on websites may require broad access because filtering happens on page requests and content; that access is still worth understanding before you approve it.
Installing an extension in Microsoft Edge
Edge supports extensions from the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store. Microsoft also documents a route for Chrome Web Store extensions, but you must explicitly allow extensions from another store and should review permissions before adding one.
- Open Microsoft Edge and select the Settings and more menu (the three dots).
- Choose Extensions.
- Select Get extensions for Microsoft Edge to browse Edge’s own store.
- Open the listing for the extension you are evaluating, inspect its permissions and publisher details, and choose Get or the equivalent install control.
- Confirm the browser prompt, then open the extension’s settings from the Extensions page or its toolbar icon.
- Load several sites you use regularly, including a sign-in page, a media site, and a site with interactive forms. Confirm that navigation, video, downloads, and payments still work.
Using the Chrome Web Store route
- In Edge, return to Extensions.
- Turn on Allow extensions from other stores when Edge presents that option.
- Open the Chrome Web Store listing for the extension.
- Review the permissions again; a listing being available in the store does not make its access appropriate for every user.
- Install it, then verify that the extension receives updates and remains enabled after an Edge restart.
Store availability is not a guarantee of long-term compatibility. Edge’s extension platform is moving toward Manifest V3, so check the extension’s current release notes or listing if a feature you rely on stops working.

Edge’s Manifest V2 to Manifest V3 transition
What Microsoft announced
In an announcement dated August 7, 2026, Microsoft reported that 95% of the top Manifest V2 extensions on the Edge Add-ons website had moved to Manifest V3. Microsoft said consumer transition notices would begin in August 2026, that MV2 extensions would be gradually turned off by default, and that the consumer transition was targeted for completion by the end of 2026. Enterprise deprecation was slated to follow in early 2027.
These figures and dates describe Microsoft’s announced program, not a guarantee that every extension has already migrated or that every feature behaves identically after migration. Microsoft also stated that the vast majority of extensions, including ad blockers, had transitioned without loss of customer functionality; treat that as Microsoft’s position rather than an independent test of every blocker.

Why the architecture matters
Manifest V3 changes the extension mechanisms available for observing and modifying requests. A blocker may therefore have a different rule limit, update behavior, or filtering path after migration. The practical question is not whether MV3 is universally good or bad; it is whether the particular extension you depend on still supports the rules and controls you need in your current Edge release.
A 2026 study published in the Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies found a statistically significant 1.78 mean difference in blocked trackers between its tested MV2 and MV3 groups. That result came from a defined browser experiment and group comparison. It does not predict the number of trackers your extension will block, establish a universal product ranking, or prove that one architecture is always superior for every site.
Checks to make during the transition
- Look for an explicit MV3-compatible release or a current Edge listing.
- Confirm that custom filter lists, cosmetic rules, and per-site exceptions still work.
- Check whether the extension updates its lists automatically and whether the update schedule is documented.
- Test your most important sites after an Edge update rather than assuming previous behavior will continue.
- If an extension is disabled by default, do not bypass the warning blindly; decide whether its permissions and maintenance status justify another option.
What a Windows desktop blocker adds
Broader coverage than a single browser
A standalone Windows application can place filtering components below the browser layer, allowing it to cover more than one browser and, in some products, selected non-browser traffic. AdGuard explicitly distinguishes the system-wide capabilities of its Windows app from those of its browser extension. That distinction is a statement about AdGuard’s products; other desktop applications can use different drivers, filtering points, exclusions, and coverage.

Desktop filtering is useful when you regularly use two browsers, a desktop mail client, an embedded web view, or applications that do not support extensions. It can also centralize rules that would otherwise have to be maintained separately in each browser.

- Coverage: Identify which browsers, applications, protocols, and user accounts the app actually filters.
- Filtering mode: Determine whether it filters DNS requests, HTTP(S) traffic, page content, or a combination. HTTPS inspection can involve additional certificates or exclusions; do not assume every app handles it the same way.
- Permissions: Read requests for administrator access, local certificates, network drivers, or startup behavior.
- Controls: Check for per-site or per-application allowlists, a pause switch, logging, and an easy way to restore defaults.
- Updates: Confirm how the application and its filter lists are updated and whether updates continue under the license you select.
Typical setup sequence
- Download the installer from the vendor’s official source and verify that it supports your Windows edition and current browser versions.
- During installation, read each component choice instead of accepting unrelated extras by default.
- Open the app’s filtering or protection dashboard after installation and record the initial defaults.
- Enable one filtering scope at a time if the app offers separate browser, DNS, and system controls. This makes later troubleshooting possible.
- Test a normal website, a sign-in flow, a video, a file download, and a site that uses payment or identity verification.
- Create narrow exceptions for broken functions. Avoid disabling the entire protection layer when a single domain or script is responsible.
A desktop app is not automatically “better” because it runs at system level. Its larger scope can also create more compatibility work, and the vendor’s implementation determines what it can and cannot see.
How DNS filtering differs
DNS blocks names, not every element
When an application asks DNS to resolve a domain, a filtering resolver can refuse, redirect, or return a policy response for domains on its lists. This can stop an ad or tracker host before a connection is made. It generally cannot inspect the full page to remove an element that shares a domain with useful content, and it may not affect traffic that uses a different resolver, a hard-coded IP address, a proxy, or an encrypted application-specific channel.
DNS filtering therefore complements browser or desktop filtering rather than replacing it in every case. The provider’s category definitions, list quality, update process, logging policy, and support for encrypted DNS are central to the result. The available evidence does not establish a current provider-by-provider ranking, feature matrix, or price comparison.
Encrypted DNS is a transport feature
Edge’s Secure DNS encrypts DNS queries between the browser and its resolver. Encryption helps prevent intermediaries from reading or altering those lookups, but it does not, by itself, decide which domains are advertisements or trackers. If you enable Secure DNS with a resolver that does not offer blocking policy, you have encrypted resolution, not ad blocking.

Configuring DNS on Windows without overcommitting
- Choose a DNS provider whose filtering categories, privacy terms, and supported protocols match your needs.
- Use the provider’s Windows instructions to set the resolver addresses on the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, or configure the policy at your router if you want multiple devices covered.
- If the provider offers encrypted DNS, follow its instructions for DNS-over-HTTPS or DNS-over-TLS separately from the filtering policy.
- Reconnect the network or renew the connection as instructed, then test name resolution and several ordinary sites.
- Test a site that should be filtered and one that must remain reachable. Keep the previous DNS settings available so you can revert quickly.
Because DNS settings are outside a single browser, a mistake can affect every application on the computer. Record the original settings and use a narrow provider policy before adding aggressive categories.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Comparing the approaches on the decisions that matter
Scope and compatibility
Choose an extension for a browser-specific problem, a desktop app for broader Windows coverage, and DNS filtering for a resolver-level policy. If you use multiple browsers, count them explicitly: an extension-only plan may require separate installations and separate exception lists.
Control and visibility
Extensions commonly expose a toolbar control and per-site exceptions close to the page being filtered. Desktop apps may centralize logs and controls across applications, but the interface and diagnostic detail vary. DNS services usually expose policy categories and resolver-level logs rather than page-element controls.
Maintenance
Extensions depend on browser updates, extension API changes, and filter-list updates. Desktop apps add their own update channel and system components. DNS filtering reduces per-browser maintenance but shifts responsibility to the provider’s lists, uptime, policy changes, and resolver configuration.
Site compatibility
Blocking can affect network requests and hide page elements. Some sites detect blocker use and may restrict access, display a warning, or withhold content. The USENIX Security 2025 literature discusses anti-adblock techniques that detect or restrict visitors; that finding describes a known technique, not an outcome on every site.
Best Value
A decision guide for common Windows setups
“I use Edge almost exclusively”
Start with a maintained Edge extension. Install it from the Edge Add-ons store when possible, review permissions, and test important sites. If an MV3 transition removes a rule or control you need, compare another current extension before moving to a system-wide app.
“I switch between Edge, another browser, and desktop apps”
Evaluate a Windows desktop application whose documented coverage includes those browsers and applications. Keep a browser extension only if it provides controls the desktop app lacks, and avoid stacking multiple filters until you know which layer is causing a failure.
“I want one policy for a household or several devices”
Consider DNS filtering at the device or router level. Confirm which devices honor the resolver, how guest networks and mobile connections behave, and how to bypass the policy when a site requires it. Add a browser or desktop layer only for page-element cleanup or finer per-site controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“I need maximum troubleshooting control”
Begin with one browser extension because it is easiest to pause and isolate. Add DNS or desktop filtering only after you have a specific gap to solve. Layering all three at once makes it difficult to identify whether a blocked domain, a page rule, or a resolver policy caused the problem.
Testing and troubleshooting checklist
Before enabling filtering
- List browsers and applications that must continue working.
- Record current DNS settings if you plan to change them.
- Choose two or three important sites for repeat testing.
- Decide whether you need browser-only, system-wide, or network-wide coverage.
If a site breaks
- Identify the smallest scope that could be responsible: the current extension, the desktop app, or DNS.
- Pause that layer temporarily and reload the page.
- If the page works, re-enable protection and add a narrow site exception rather than disabling everything.
- Check whether the site’s login, video, checkout, downloads, or embedded content uses a separate domain that your filter blocks.
- Clear only the relevant site data or restart the affected application if the filter’s documentation calls for it.
If ads still appear
- Confirm that the extension or app is enabled for the current browser profile.
- Check whether the browser is using a private window where extensions are disabled by default.
- Verify that the site is not being reached through an application-specific browser or embedded web view.
- For DNS filtering, confirm the device is using the intended resolver and that the provider’s category includes the domain.
- Remember that DNS may block a host without removing an ad element served from a shared content domain.
If Edge disables or limits an extension
Check the extension listing and release notes for MV3 support, then review Microsoft’s current transition status. A warning or default-off state can reflect the browser’s platform policy rather than a temporary page error. Move to a maintained compatible extension or a different filtering scope instead of ignoring the warning.
Cost, licensing, and privacy questions
Current prices and license terms were not established in the available evidence, so verify them directly before choosing. Check whether a desktop license covers one Windows device or several, whether browser extensions are free companions to a paid app, and whether DNS filtering charges for additional devices, query volume, or advanced categories.
Read the privacy policy for any service that handles DNS queries or installs a system filtering component. Ask what is logged, how long logs are retained, whether data is associated with an account, and how you can delete or export settings. A free option can still have meaningful trade-offs if it changes categories, limits support, or funds the service through data practices you do not accept.
Recommended Free Tools
Bottom line: match the filter to the problem
For one-browser simplicity, use a current extension and verify its permissions and MV3 status. For coverage that follows you across browsers and selected Windows applications, assess a standalone desktop app’s documented system scope. For a resolver-level policy across applications or devices, choose a DNS provider based on its categories, privacy terms, reliability, and Windows configuration instructions; do not confuse encrypted DNS with ad blocking. Whichever route you choose, test important sites, keep exceptions narrow, and retain a quick way to revert the change.
