How to Choose an Account Aggregator for Your Financial App

Choose an account aggregator by testing it against your app’s real institutions, countries, account types, data fields, consent journey, authentication methods, reliability requirements, and total cost. A large advertised connection count is not proof that users can connect the accounts you need.

Shortlist providers, run the same representative pilot with each one, and compare written quotes under identical assumptions. Treat coverage, credential handling, permissions, security evidence, operational support, regulatory roles, and exit terms as acceptance criteria—not marketing claims.

What an account aggregator does

An account aggregator is an intermediary that connects a financial app to many banks and other financial institutions through one integration. Instead of building and maintaining a separate connection for every institution, your app uses the aggregator’s API or software development kit (SDK). The aggregator manages institution-specific authentication, data retrieval, normalization, error handling, and often consent records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A typical flow looks like this:

  1. Your app asks a user to connect an account for a defined purpose, such as showing balances, verifying income, or assessing a loan application.
  2. The user selects an institution and completes that institution’s authentication or authorization journey.
  3. The aggregator receives permissioned data, obtains tokens or another approved access method, and normalizes the response.
  4. Your backend receives only the products and fields you requested, subject to the user’s permission and the institution’s capabilities.
  5. The aggregator refreshes data, sends updates or errors, and provides tools for reauthentication and revocation.

This model can reduce integration work, but it creates a paid dependency on another company. In the European Union PSD2 context, the OECD describes the trade-off as avoiding the time and cost of building and maintaining every API yourself while adding an intermediary and its charges. The legal and licensing implications depend on the market, the service you offer, and the roles assigned to your company and the provider.

Start with the app’s actual data job

Do not begin by comparing provider logos or headline connection totals. First define exactly what the connection enables. A balance display, account verification, lending decision, personal-finance analysis, payment initiation, and investment dashboard require different data, refresh behavior, and risk controls.

Write the minimum data specification

For each user task, document the fields and timing your product actually needs:

  • Accounts: checking, savings, credit card, loan, mortgage, brokerage, retirement, business, or joint accounts.
  • Identity: account holder name, ownership type, address, or other verification attributes.
  • Balances: current, available, credit limit, payoff amount, and currency where relevant.
  • Transactions: amount, date, merchant, category, pending status, counterparty, and historical range.
  • Liabilities and income: loan terms, repayment data, deposits, payroll indicators, or recurring obligations.
  • Investments and insurance: positions, valuations, policy details, and update frequency if your product needs them.
  • Timing: one-time retrieval, daily refresh, near-real-time updates, webhook events, or user-triggered refresh.

Mark every field as required, useful, or unnecessary. Requesting broad access “just in case” increases consent friction, privacy exposure, storage obligations, and the effect of a future breach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define launch markets and edge cases

List the countries you will support at launch and the institutions your users are most likely to use. Include account types that are easy to overlook: joint accounts, small-business accounts, credit products, investment accounts, and institutions that require strong customer authentication. Keep the list anonymized when sharing it with vendors, but make it concrete enough to test.

Coverage must be measured against this list. A provider can support thousands of institutions yet perform poorly for the banks, regions, or account types that dominate your customer base. Coverage can also differ by product: a provider may expose balances for an institution but not transaction history, or support personal accounts but not business accounts.

Compare providers on the criteria that affect your product

Use the following as a request-for-evidence checklist. These are questions to establish with each candidate, not assumptions that one provider leads every category.

Evaluation axis Evidence to request
Target-market coverage Supported institutions, countries, account types, connection methods, and expected success for your representative institution list.
Data scope and quality Exact fields, normalization rules, balance and transaction semantics, historical depth, update behavior, and known institution-specific gaps.
Authentication and security OAuth or direct-API availability by institution, credential handling, token lifecycle, encryption, access controls, audit evidence, and incident procedures.
Consent and control Permission granularity, user explanations, authorization records, connection visibility, revocation, deletion, retention, and downstream sharing controls.
Reliability and support Institution-level connection and refresh performance, incident communication, status visibility, support response targets, and contractual service levels.
Integration effort API and SDK fit, documentation, sandbox quality, webhooks, test institutions, implementation assistance, versioning, and maintenance burden.
Total cost and contract Setup fees, minimums, per-user or per-connection charges, refresh costs, product add-ons, support tiers, term, renewal, and exit or migration provisions.
Regulatory fit Provider and customer legal roles, licensing or accreditation expectations, privacy responsibilities, data-location options, and market-specific obligations.

Ask vendors to identify what is guaranteed contractually, what is an estimate, and what varies by institution or country. Product pages describe capabilities; they do not independently establish your app’s coverage, uptime, data quality, or legal compliance.

Understand connection and credential methods

The connection method determines what the user sees, what secrets the intermediary handles, and how access is renewed.

OAuth and direct API connections

In an OAuth or direct-API flow, the user is redirected to the institution or an institution-controlled authorization screen. The institution issues a token or authorization grant with defined scopes. The aggregator uses that grant rather than receiving the user’s bank password. Tokens can usually be revoked without changing the password, but expiration, reauthentication, and scope changes still need handling.

MX states of its Data Access product: “Consumers never have to share their username and password.” Treat that as MX’s product statement for its described experience, not as a market-wide guarantee. Confirm which of your target institutions use that method and what happens when a connection falls back to another flow.

Non-OAuth or intermediary credential flows

Some institutions do not provide an OAuth or direct API path. An intermediary flow may ask the user for credentials through a hosted or embedded experience and use them to retrieve data. Plaid’s consumer documentation distinguishes these cases: OAuth/API connections do not store account credentials, while some non-OAuth connections involve Plaid storing credentials. The method is institution- and flow-dependent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask every provider for an institution-level map showing whether credentials are entered at the institution, at the provider, or nowhere; whether credentials are stored, encrypted, or exchanged for tokens; how often they are re-entered; and what happens after a password change. Do not describe a provider as universally “credentialless” unless the contract and coverage data support that claim.

Questions about token and secret lifecycle

  • Which system creates and stores access tokens?
  • What scopes are issued, and can the user narrow them?
  • How are tokens encrypted, rotated, expired, and revoked?
  • Can your application revoke access independently of the user?
  • How are secrets removed from logs, support tools, backups, and test environments?
  • What notification and containment process applies after a security incident?

Design consent as an ongoing control

Consent is more than the first “connect account” screen. Users need to understand what they are sharing, why the app needs it, how long access lasts, and how to stop it.

Specify the permission journey

Before implementation, draw the complete journey from request to deletion:

  1. Explain the product purpose in plain language before the institution selector.
  2. List the account categories and data fields requested, separating required from optional access.
  3. Show the institution’s authorization screen or redirect where applicable.
  4. Record the grant, scopes, institution, timestamp, and expiry or renewal state.
  5. Give the user a connection-management screen that names connected institutions and current permissions.
  6. Provide a visible revoke action and explain what stops immediately, what data remains temporarily, and how deletion is completed.
  7. Apply retention and deletion rules to raw responses, normalized records, caches, logs, backups, and analytics copies.

MX describes a consent dashboard for users to manage and revoke access. Plaid describes connection and permission-management tools for institutional partners. Verify the exact controls available in the product and market you will deploy; a vendor feature name does not replace your own user-facing workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate revocation from deletion

Revoking access prevents future retrieval. It does not automatically erase data your app already stored. Your privacy design should define both actions, their timing, and the evidence retained to demonstrate completion. Also document what happens when a user deletes an app account, disconnects one institution, or withdraws only one permission scope.

Choose the right data model: open banking or open finance

Plaid describes open banking as primarily bank-account sharing and open finance as consumer-permissioned access to broader financial information, including loans, credit, investments, and insurance. The distinction matters because a provider may offer one product without supporting the fields or institutions required by the other.

Map each requested data category to a specific provider product and test response examples. Confirm:

  • Whether fields are available for every target institution or only some.
  • Whether balances and transactions use consistent definitions and currencies.
  • How far back transaction history extends on first connection and after refresh.
  • Whether pending transactions are included and how they transition to posted status.
  • How duplicate, corrected, or reversed transactions are represented.
  • Whether investment prices, loan balances, or insurance details have a stated update cadence.

If your app only needs account verification, purchasing a broad open-finance product can add cost and consent complexity without improving the user outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a representative pilot before signing

Vendor demonstrations rarely reveal institution-specific failures. Use the same test plan, data requirements, and success definitions for every shortlisted provider.

Build the test set

Select institutions and account types using expected customer share, not convenience. Include the largest likely institutions, regional banks, credit unions where relevant, and difficult cases such as joint, business, credit, or investment accounts. Include at least one account that requires reauthentication or strong customer authentication if that will occur in production.

Measure the complete journey

Record results per institution and per attempt, not only an aggregate percentage:

  • Time from connection start to completed authorization.
  • Completion rate and the step at which users abandon.
  • Successful account discovery and correct account-type classification.
  • Presence and accuracy of every required field.
  • First-load history depth and refresh latency.
  • Frequency and clarity of reauthentication prompts.
  • Error categories, recovery path, and whether a retry succeeds.
  • Webhook delivery, duplicate-event behavior, and delayed updates.
  • Support response time and the quality of incident explanations.

The reviewed sources do not provide neutral, app-specific benchmarks for these measures. Do not invent a connection-success rate, uptime figure, or data-quality score; publish your own pilot results only with the test population, dates, and conditions attached.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use pass/fail gates

Set minimums before seeing vendor results. For example, require every launch-critical institution to support the required account type and fields, define an acceptable maximum refresh delay, and require a documented recovery path for expired authorization. A provider that fails a mandatory gate should not win because it is cheaper on optional features.

Compare total cost, not a headline rate

Pricing is often composed of several usage dimensions. Request a written quote based on the same assumptions from every candidate:

Cost component Assumption to standardize
Implementation One-time setup, engineering support, sandbox access, certification, and migration work.
Active users or connections Monthly active users, connected institutions per user, reconnection rate, and dormant-account policy.
Data products Balances, transactions, identity, income, liabilities, investments, payments, or other add-ons.
Refresh activity Scheduled refresh frequency, user-triggered refreshes, webhooks, and retry behavior.
Support and service levels Support tier, on-call coverage, incident communications, and contractual remedies.
Minimums and overages Monthly minimum, annual commitment, volume tiers, burst usage, and charges for exceeding estimates.
Exit Data export, transition assistance, notice period, termination fees, and deletion certification.

Calculate a realistic low, expected, and high usage case. Include the engineering cost of handling provider-specific errors, maintaining fallback logic, responding to reauthentication, and migrating if the relationship ends. A lower per-connection price can be more expensive if it requires substantial custom work or produces unusable data.

Check security, privacy, and regulatory fit

Security review should cover the provider’s controls and your shared responsibilities. Ask for current audit reports or certifications where available, penetration-test summaries, encryption practices, role-based access controls, staff access procedures, vulnerability disclosure, business-continuity plans, and breach-notification timelines. Confirm where data is processed and stored, including backups and support systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regulatory obligations vary by jurisdiction and use case. Determine whether your company is acting as a regulated account-information service, payment service, lender, data controller, processor, or another role. Establish who obtains consent, who responds to data-subject requests, who handles complaints, and who reports incidents. Obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice rather than treating a provider’s accreditation as a complete compliance solution.

Evaluate integration and operational fit

Implementation requirements

  • API version stability, SDK language support, mobile and web compatibility.
  • Sandbox realism, test credentials, simulated institution outages, and webhook testing.
  • Documentation for pagination, idempotency, retries, rate limits, and error codes.
  • Observability: request IDs, logs, metrics, status pages, and institution-level diagnostics.
  • Release notices, deprecation periods, backward compatibility, and migration guides.

Production operations

Design for expired consent, changed passwords, institution outages, duplicate transactions, delayed webhooks, partial data, and users who connect the wrong account. Your application should show an actionable status, avoid repeatedly retrying a failing institution, and preserve the last known value with a timestamp when that is safe for the use case. Never silently present stale financial information as current.

Ask how incidents are declared, how customers are notified, whether support can identify an institution-specific problem, and what service-level commitments are enforceable. A public status page is useful, but it is not a substitute for contractual response and resolution terms.

Use a scoring framework that reflects your priorities

After the pilot, score each provider against weighted criteria. Weight coverage and required data most heavily if a failed connection makes your product unusable; weight security, consent, and regulatory fit most heavily if you handle sensitive decisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category Example weighting question
Coverage Does the provider pass every launch-critical institution and account-type gate?
Data fitness Are required fields present, accurate, timely, and consistently modeled?
User experience Can users authorize, reconnect, understand permissions, and recover from errors?
Security and privacy Are controls, evidence, retention, and incident duties acceptable?
Operations Can your team monitor failures and obtain effective support?
Integration effort Can the team ship and maintain the integration within its capacity?
Total cost Does the quote remain viable at expected and high usage?
Contract and exit Can you export data and leave without unacceptable lock-in?

Keep the underlying evidence beside every score: test account, date, response payload, support ticket, contract clause, or security document. Separate measured results from vendor estimates and unresolved assumptions.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

Choosing by connection count

Problem: A broad count hides gaps in your target institutions, countries, or account types.
Fix: Test a representative institution list and require product-level field confirmation.

Assuming one credential policy applies everywhere

Problem: OAuth, direct APIs, and intermediary credential flows can coexist within one provider’s network.
Fix: Request the method and credential-handling behavior for each launch-critical institution.

Treating consent as a one-time screen

Problem: Users cannot see active connections, narrow permissions, revoke access, or delete stored data.
Fix: Design connection management, revocation, retention, and deletion before launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing prices with different assumptions

Problem: One quote includes refreshes or support while another bills them separately.
Fix: Send identical user, connection, product, refresh, support, and service-level assumptions to every vendor.

Relying on marketing reliability claims

Problem: General uptime language does not show institution-level completion or freshness for your users.
Fix: Run equivalent pilots, retain dated evidence, and negotiate measurable service commitments.

Ignoring exit planning

Problem: A provider change becomes a crisis because tokens, normalized data, and user consent records cannot be migrated.
Fix: Store provider identifiers and consent metadata in a portable model, define export formats, and negotiate transition assistance.

Make the decision

Select the provider that meets every mandatory requirement for your launch institutions and data scope, then offers the best documented combination of consent control, security, operational support, integration effort, and total cost. Keep a second provider or fallback only when the additional coverage or resilience justifies its engineering and commercial burden.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Revalidate volatile facts at signing and before launch: institution coverage, authentication paths, fields, pricing, support, service levels, data locations, and regulatory roles can change by market, institution, product edition, and date. A disciplined, representative pilot is more reliable than a universal “best aggregator” list because it measures the service your customers will actually encounter.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
