How to Choose an 8TB SSD for PS5: Two Verified Options and the Fit Rules

The PS5 supports compatible M.2 NVMe SSDs up to 8 TB, but capacity alone does not make a drive suitable. Among the product information available here, two 8 TB paths are identified for PS5: CORSAIR MP600 PRO LPX and WD_BLACK SN850P with heatsink. Treat them as a shortlist, not a ranked top five: confirm the exact SKU and its full dimensions with cooling installed before buying.

What an 8 TB PS5 SSD must meet

PlayStation’s support guidance allows compatible M.2 SSDs from 250 GB through 8 TB. The drive must be an M.2 NVMe device using PCIe Gen4 x4 and Key M; M.2 SATA drives are not supported. PlayStation recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s. These are compatibility requirements and guidance, not a guarantee that every drive with an 8 TB capacity will fit or perform identically.

The supported module lengths are 30, 42, 60, 80, and 110 mm, commonly described as sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110. The combined width of the SSD and heat-dissipation structure must not exceed 25 mm. Total thickness must not exceed 11.25 mm, with no more than 8 mm above the board and 2.45 mm below it.

Those limits apply to the assembled drive. A bare module’s dimensions are not enough if a heatsink is attached or must be added. PlayStation says effective heat dissipation is required and that single- and double-sided devices can be supported, subject to the specified fit envelope. Update the console system software before installation, and contact the SSD maker if the exact assembled dimensions are unclear.

Two identified 8 TB options

The available manufacturer information identifies these products, but does not establish a verified ranking, current regional stock or price, or a complete side-by-side comparison of fit and warranty. Confirm the exact capacity suffix and heatsink configuration on the listing you intend to buy.

CORSAIR MP600 PRO LPX 8 TB CORSAIR describes it as a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe 1.4, M.2 2280 SSD and identifies it as PS5/PS5 Pro compatible. CORSAIR product page Check the exact listing and confirm the installed heatsink’s total width and thickness against PlayStation’s limits.
WD_BLACK SN850P 8 TB with heatsink Western Digital’s PS5-console product-line data sheet lists an 8 TB heatsink SKU, WDBBYV0080BNC-WRSN. How to choose without relying on a “best five” ranking

  1. Match the exact 8 TB SKU. Product families may include different capacities and cooling configurations. Confirm the listing’s model number, capacity and region rather than assuming every version of a product line fits.
  2. Confirm the interface and speed. Look for PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe, Key M, and a sequential read specification at or above PlayStation’s recommended 5,500 MB/s.
  3. Measure the assembled drive. Include the bundled heatsink or any cooling hardware you plan to add. Check length, width, total thickness, and the board-relative thickness limits against PlayStation’s guidance.
  4. Compare ownership details using exact-SKU specifications. Check warranty and endurance from the manufacturer documentation for the specific 8 TB model. Current price and stock should come from the retailer listing for your region; neither is established by the product documents cited here.

These checks are more useful than treating “8 TB” or a product-family name as proof of compatibility. The available specifications do not support ranking five distinct models or claiming one of these two is faster or better in real-console use.

Is an 8 TB Samsung 990 PRO established as an option?

Not by the Samsung materials cited here. The surfaced 990 PRO capacity announcement discusses 4 TB, and the series announcement does not establish an 8 TB SKU. Do not treat the 990 PRO as a verified 8 TB choice on that evidence. See Samsung’s 4 TB 990 PRO announcement and its 990 PRO series announcement.
