Choose algae-based ink by matching the product to your printing process, substrate, curing equipment, and appearance target. For packaging, start with the press and material; for screen printing, compare Modern Black and Vintage Black technical requirements; for art, confirm that a black-only printmaking ink fits your palette and drying method. Treat environmental, chemical, and certification statements as product-specific claims that must be confirmed on the current technical data sheet (TDS), safety data sheet (SDS), and certificate for the exact SKU.

What algae-based ink is—and what it is not

Living Ink describes ALGAE INK™ as a black printing ink made by combining ALGAE BLACK™ pigment derived from algae with water or soy carriers. The company positions it as a drop-in replacement for inks colored with carbon black. The line is described for offset, flexographic, flat-bed screen, and rotary screen printing, so “algae ink” is not one universal formula. Each product still has a defined viscosity, curing method, mesh range, substrate list, and storage window.

Living Ink’s product family is centered on black pigment. That matters when planning artwork, brand colors, or multicolor packaging: an algae-derived black does not automatically provide a complete color system. Ask the supplier which other colors, bases, extenders, or overprint coatings are available for your process rather than assuming that a black product has matching algae-based colors.

Product pages state that the ALGAE INK line uses water- or soy-based carriers and contains no PVC, phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), mineral oils, or intentionally added PFAS. Those are manufacturer or retailer product claims, not a blanket guarantee for every regional formulation, additive, or finished package. Obtain the current SDS and TDS for the exact product and manufacturing region before making a restricted-substance statement to a customer.

Start with the process and substrate

The fastest way to choose correctly is to identify the job’s press, substrate, and production conditions before comparing shades. The same algae-derived pigment can behave differently in a water-based screen ink, a conventional flexographic ink, or a UV-curable flexographic formulation.

Use case Products or routes documented Questions to answer before ordering
Paper packaging Offset, flexographic, and screen-printing versions of ALGAE INK are described. Which press type, ink-transfer system, drying method, coating, and paper grade will be used?
Plastic packaging or labels Some plastic substrates and labels are documented; ACTExact® UV Black Algae Ink is described as a UV-curable flexographic option for packaging and labels. Is the exact plastic film or label stock listed by the supplier? What anilox volume, viscosity, lamp power, line speed, and surface treatment are required?
Screen printing on fabric or rigid goods Modern Black and Vintage Black water-based screen inks. What substrate, mesh count, squeegee setup, flash and oven capacity, wash requirements, and production speed apply?
Art and printmaking Standard Screen ALGAE INK is recorded as a printmaking material. Is the available black tone suitable, how quickly must it dry, and do you need colors beyond black?

Packaging: choose the ink architecture first

For a paper carton, bag, or other porous package, a conventional water- or soy-carrier product may be appropriate if the press and drying system are compatible. For high-throughput labels or films, investigate a flexographic formulation designed for that line. ACTEGA describes ACTExact® UV Black Algae Ink as a UV-curable flexographic ink using carbon-negative algae pigment for packaging and labels. “Carbon-negative” in that description is not a quantified lifecycle result; no independent, publisher-dated comparative carbon figure has been published.

Do not treat a successful drawdown on paper as proof that the same ink will adhere to polyethylene, polypropylene, coated film, or a pressure-sensitive label construction. Film surface treatment, primer, varnish, and laminate can change adhesion and rub resistance. The supplier should confirm the intended substrate and process, and your converter should test the complete finished construction.

Screen printing: let mesh, cure, and cleanup drive the choice

Modern Black and Vintage Black are water-based screen inks with different visual targets and mesh guidance. Both require an oven-capable workflow and prompt cleanup. Before buying, verify that your screen tension, mesh, squeegee, flash unit, oven, and wash station can reproduce the supplier’s conditions. A product that looks right in a sample jar is not a fit if your shop cannot reach its cure schedule or prevent screens from drying in the stencil.

Art and printmaking: confirm the black and the workflow

Standard Screen ALGAE INK is documented for printmaking, making it the most direct route for artists who want to work with this pigment system. Confirm whether the black is a neutral, cool, warm, or antique-looking black under your paper and lighting. Also check open time, drying speed, reworkability, and cleanup against your studio routine. If your planned edition needs a full palette, establish whether compatible non-black colors can be used without changing adhesion or drying behavior.

Modern Black versus Vintage Black Screen ALGAE INK

The two documented screen products are not interchangeable shade names. Modern Black is intended to read as a deep, contemporary black; Vintage Black is an antique-black variant. Their recommended mesh ranges also differ, so the choice affects both appearance and stencil setup.

Characteristic Modern Black Vintage Black
Visual character Deep, modern black Antique black with a more aged appearance
Carrier Water-based Water-based
Recommended mesh 150–240 threads per inch (T/in) 110–320 T/in
Hardener or fixator Built-in hardener Optional Fixator NFO is available
Cure requirement 330°F (165°C) for a minimum of 90 seconds; product guidance also gives 120–180 seconds of oven dwell 330°F (165°C) for a minimum of 90 seconds; product guidance also gives 120–180 seconds of oven dwell
Cleanup Clean promptly with water and mild detergent before ink dries Clean promptly with water and mild detergent before ink dries
Storage 41–89°F (5–32°C); one year unopened, according to the retailer’s product page 41–89°F (5–32°C); one year unopened, according to the retailer’s product page
Freezing Do not freeze Do not freeze
Certification listed on product pages OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT; verify the current certificate for the exact SKU OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT; verify the current certificate for the exact SKU

Choose Modern Black when a dense, current-looking black and a 150–240 T/in screen fit your artwork and press. Choose Vintage Black when an antique appearance is intentional or when the wider 110–320 T/in guidance gives you more flexibility. The broader mesh range does not remove the need for a proof: deposit, opacity, fabric color, and cure all affect the final result.

  1. Confirm the substrate. Record the fabric, paper, board, plastic, or coated item and check that the product page or TDS lists it. For garments, plan a wash-fastness test; for rigid goods, plan adhesion and rub testing.
  2. Select the mesh. Set Modern Black within the 150–240 T/in guidance or Vintage Black within the 110–320 T/in guidance. Record mesh count and thread type so a repeat job can be matched.
  3. Prepare the stencil and ink. Use a stencil system compatible with water-based ink. Stir uniformly, note the lot number, and avoid adding reducer, retarder, or crosslinker unless the supplier specifically allows it.
  4. Set the print hardware. Confirm squeegee hardness, angle, pressure, flood stroke, off-contact, and flash settings with a test print. The available product information does not establish one universal squeegee specification, so do not copy a setting from another ink.
  5. Check flash and wet-on-wet behavior. Make sure an intermediate flash leaves the first layer stable without skinning the screen. Test registration and opacity on the actual substrate.
  6. Cure in an oven. The documented minimum is 330°F (165°C) for at least 90 seconds. The product guidance gives 120–180 seconds of oven dwell; verify the temperature at the ink film, not only the oven display, and adjust for line speed, garment thickness, and load.
  7. Test the finished print. Check adhesion, opacity, rub or scuff resistance, color consistency, and wash fastness where relevant. Keep an uncured control sample so a failure can be traced to the cure cycle rather than the ink.
  8. Clean immediately. Flush screens, tools, and squeegees with water and mild detergent before the ink dries. Dried water-based ink is substantially harder to remove and can damage stencil detail.

Modern Black has a built-in hardener. Vintage Black can be used with optional Fixator NFO when the supplier’s instructions call for it. Do not add a fixator to Modern Black simply to increase durability, and do not assume Vintage Black’s optional additive is necessary for every substrate; document the formulation and pot life for each job.

Packaging tests that prevent expensive failures

Packaging buyers should test the entire print-and-convert sequence, not just a wet ink sample. A useful proof uses the real substrate, the intended press settings, the planned drying or UV-curing equipment, and the finishing steps that the package will experience.

  • Adhesion: Use the converter’s standard tape, cross-hatch, or rub method after the ink has fully cured. Test both printed and varnished areas.
  • Scuff and abrasion: Simulate filling, stacking, transport, and handling. Record whether the failure is ink removal, substrate fiber pick, or coating failure.
  • Color and opacity: Compare a drawdown and production proof under consistent lighting. Blackness can change with ink film thickness, anilox volume, paper absorbency, and overprint varnish.
  • Finishing compatibility: Test lamination, aqueous coating, UV coating, die cutting, folding, and heat exposure where those operations are part of the package.
  • Regulatory status: Confirm food-contact, toy, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, or other applicable requirements with the ink supplier and packaging converter. The product information does not establish food-contact approval or any other jurisdiction-specific authorization.
  • Process repeatability: Record press, anilox or screen details, viscosity, line speed, cure settings, substrate lot, ink lot, and storage temperature.

For UV flexographic work, ask ACTEGA or the authorized supplier for lamp spectrum, energy dose, line-speed limits, anilox recommendations, viscosity range, and substrate list for ACTExact® UV Black Algae Ink. A UV label ink cannot be substituted for a water-based screen ink merely because both use algae-derived black pigment.

Using algae ink for art and printmaking

Artists generally have more control over substrate and drying than packaging converters, but consistency still matters for editions. Standard Screen ALGAE INK is documented as a printmaking material, so begin with a small proof on the paper or board you intend to use.

Evaluate the mark before committing to an edition

  • Print a stepped test with light, medium, and heavy deposits to see how the black changes with squeegee pressure and screen openness.
  • Compare the dried color in daylight and your gallery or studio lighting. “Black” can appear neutral, blue-leaning, brown-leaning, dense, or translucent depending on the paper.
  • Check drying time, blocking when sheets are stacked, and whether the surface remains tacky under your normal humidity.
  • Test erasure, overprinting, registration, and cleanup with your chosen stencil and tools.
  • If you need color, verify compatible inks separately; the documented evidence does not establish a complete algae-based palette.

Keep the ink container sealed between sessions, avoid freezing, and mark the date opened. For an edition, retain a reference print and record mesh, stencil exposure, ink lot, paper lot, drying conditions, and any additives so later sheets can be matched.

Chemistry, sustainability, and certification claims

Algae-derived pigment can reduce reliance on carbon-black pigment in the formulation, and Living Ink presents ALGAE INK™ as a drop-in replacement. ACTEGA describes its UV flexographic product as using carbon-negative algae pigment. Neither statement supplies an independent, product-specific lifecycle comparison in the available product information, so avoid quoting a percentage carbon reduction or calling a package carbon neutral without a verified assessment.

OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT is listed on the Modern Black and Vintage Black product pages. Certification can apply to a defined product, formulation, and validity period; it does not automatically cover another color, additive, varnish, substrate, or finished package. Request the current certificate number and scope, then compare it with the SKU and production region on your purchase order.

The SDS is essential even for a water-based ink. It identifies handling precautions, storage limits, disposal guidance, and any hazardous components that may be present in the complete formulation. “Water-based,” “soy-based,” or “PFAS-free” should not be treated as a substitute for reading the SDS.

A practical buying and proof checklist

  1. Name the job: packaging, commercial screen printing, or art/printmaking.
  2. Specify the substrate: include coating, surface treatment, fabric color, film type, label construction, or paper weight.
  3. Specify the process: offset, flexographic, rotary screen, flat-bed screen, or hand printmaking.
  4. Request documents: current TDS, SDS, certificate, color information, and storage or shelf-life statement for the exact SKU.
  5. Confirm equipment: mesh or anilox range, viscosity control, flash and oven capacity, UV lamps where applicable, and cleanup facilities.
  6. Run a controlled proof: use the real substrate and production settings, then test adhesion, rub resistance, wash fastness, opacity, color, and cleanup.
  7. Check regulatory needs: obtain written confirmation for food contact or other regulated uses instead of inferring approval from environmental claims.
  8. Record repeatability data: lot number, storage temperature, ink age, mesh or anilox, press speed, cure temperature, dwell time, and finishing conditions.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely causes to investigate Corrective action
Print rubs off after production Insufficient cure, incompatible substrate, contaminated surface, or coating interference Verify ink-film temperature and dwell, retest adhesion on the actual substrate, and obtain supplier guidance before changing additives.
Ink dries in the screen Long pauses, excessive airflow, or delayed cleanup Keep the screen flooded during pauses, reduce unnecessary airflow, and wash with water and mild detergent promptly.
Black looks gray or uneven Insufficient deposit, wrong mesh, absorbent stock, inconsistent pressure, or incomplete mixing Compare a controlled drawdown, check mesh and stencil, standardize squeegee settings, and verify substrate absorbency.
Vintage Black does not look antique Lighting, paper color, film thickness, or an unintended overprint changing the appearance Evaluate cured samples under the final lighting and compare the supplier’s shade reference before changing the product.
Film or label ink fails adhesion Untreated or low-energy surface, wrong formulation, varnish or laminate incompatibility, or inadequate UV dose Confirm surface treatment and product designation, then test UV dose, line speed, and finishing with the converter.
Color changes between batches Different ink lots, storage outside 41–89°F (5–32°C), freezing, substrate variation, or cure drift Use in-date material, prevent freezing, condition ink and substrate consistently, and compare recorded process data.

Availability, pricing, and what is not established

Current marketplace stock, regional availability, consumer pricing, and affiliate listings are not published in the product information. Screen-printing shops should buy through a supplier that can provide the current technical documents and lot traceability. Packaging converters should request a formal quotation and production trial rather than relying on a retail listing. Artists should confirm package size, shelf life, shipping temperature controls, and return policy before ordering.

A small proof is usually less expensive than correcting a failed run, but the exact cost depends on substrate, press time, screens, curing energy, finishing, and labor. Compare the total trial cost with the risk of adhesion, wash-fastness, or regulatory failure instead of comparing ink prices alone.

Bottom-line selection

For packaging, select the formulation built for your press and substrate, and investigate ACTExact® UV Black Algae Ink when a UV-curable flexographic label or packaging process is appropriate. For screen printing, pick Modern Black for a deep contemporary black within 150–240 T/in or Vintage Black for an antique look with 110–320 T/in guidance, then meet the documented cure and cleanup requirements. For art, Standard Screen ALGAE INK is a documented printmaking option, but test the black on your paper and confirm whether a black-only system meets your project. In every case, make the final decision from a real-substrate proof and current SKU-specific documentation.
