How to Choose AI Training That Leads to Skills You Can Use at Work

Choose training that lets you practise AI on tasks you actually do at work, gives you feedback, and teaches you to check outputs and manage risks. Most workers should start with general AI literacy; specialist training in developing or maintaining AI systems is for roles that require it.

Start with the work you want to do better

AI changes tasks within occupations, rather than making the same skills necessary for everyone. Useful capabilities can include interacting with AI, digital and data skills, and complementary cognitive and transferable skills. The OECD’s Employment Outlook 2023 treats skill needs as a mix, not a single universal AI qualification.

Before comparing courses, name one or two real tasks you want to handle more effectively—for example, drafting a first version of a routine document, organising information, or checking a set of options. Then look for a course that teaches the relevant process and its limits. A broad promise to teach “AI skills” does not tell you whether the content fits your job.

Do you need AI literacy or technical training?

General AI literacy for using AI at work

For most workers who use AI tools, the useful starting point is general AI literacy: interacting effectively with AI, recognising risks, and critically evaluating its output. The OECD’s 2025 brief, Bridging the AI skills gap: Is training keeping up?, distinguishes this broad need from specialised skills for building AI systems. A practical course at this level should help you apply AI to work-like tasks and decide when an answer needs verification or should not be used.

Specialist training for building or maintaining AI systems

Choose advanced technical training when your role involves developing, deploying, or maintaining AI systems, or when a clearly defined next role requires those capabilities. The OECD’s 2023 report notes that specialised AI skills require a combination of formal higher education and on-the-job learning. Do not assume you need model-building instruction simply because AI affects your occupation.

Use this checklist to assess a course

Inspect the syllabus and ask the provider for specifics. A strong fit should make these points clear:

  • Role and task fit: Which learner roles and work tasks is the course designed for?
  • Skill level: Does it teach general AI use, specialist development, or a defined combination?
  • Real practice: Do learners complete realistic assignments or projects, rather than only watch demonstrations?
  • Feedback and assessment: Does someone assess the work or give feedback, so you can tell whether you can perform the skill?
  • Critical evaluation: Does the course teach you to test outputs, identify limitations, and judge when human review is needed?
  • Responsible use: Does it address risks such as privacy, safety, transparency, and accountability, while keeping human judgment central?
  • Practical access: Does the schedule, format, support, and workload fit your circumstances?
  • Workplace fit: Can you complete exercises using approved tools and data without violating your employer’s rules?

These are comparison criteria, not a universal rating system. OECD and UNESCO guidance supports role-relevant skills, critical evaluation, and project-based learning, but does not establish that one delivery format or credential works best for everyone.

Compare courses on the evidence they show

When you have two or more options, compare what each syllabus actually promises and requires. If a provider does not state an item, ask rather than assuming it is included.

What to compare Evidence to look for
Role and task relevance Named job tasks and learner roles the course addresses
Skill level A clear description of general AI literacy, specialist system-building, or both
Practice and transfer Work-like exercises or projects that require learners to apply AI
Feedback and assessment Feedback, assessed work, or another way to demonstrate competence beyond attendance
Critical use and safeguards Instruction in output evaluation, limitations, risks, privacy, and responsible use
Access and support Format, schedule, learner support, and fit with workplace constraints

Look for practice, not just a certificate

A completion certificate can record participation, but it does not by itself show that you can perform a task. Look for a work sample, project, or assessed exercise that requires you to apply the skill and explain how you checked the result. UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence recommends project-based learning and transferable capabilities alongside technical skills, including critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and learning how to learn.

Ask how feedback works: who reviews the work, what criteria are used, and whether learners can revise after receiving feedback. If the course offers only lessons and a badge, it may still be useful for orientation, but it gives you less evidence that you can transfer what you learned to your job.

Check workplace rules before using real work data

Training should help you use AI responsibly, but a course cannot replace your employer’s current policy. Before entering workplace or sensitive information in a tool or exercise, check which tools and data your organisation permits. OECD identifies privacy, safety, transparency, explainability, and accountability as workplace AI policy concerns; the specific rules that apply to you depend on your organisation.

Prefer exercises that use sample or anonymised data when approval is unclear. A useful course should leave room for human review and accountability, rather than presenting AI output as automatically reliable or ready to send.

What the available figures do—and do not—say

In its 2025 analysis, the OECD found AI-related material in 0.3% to 5.5% of analysed training courses across Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the United States. The analysis used text matching on course catalogues covering formal and non-formal education and training; the OECD cautions that informal and workplace learning may not be captured. This is not a current global share of all AI training, nor a measure of course quality.

An OECD brief published in 2026 summarises survey evidence that more than half of workers using AI reported receiving employer-funded training. Workers who reported training were also more likely to report positive outcomes, including better job performance and working conditions. These are reported associations, not proof that a specific course caused those outcomes or a guarantee of what an individual learner will experience.

Make the choice based on your next task

Choose the course that connects a real task in your role to hands-on practice, useful feedback, critical evaluation, and responsible use. Start with general AI literacy unless your responsibilities call for developing or maintaining AI systems; judge any credential by the work you can demonstrate, not by the badge alone.
