Choose aerogel only when it solves a specific building problem that thicker, conventional insulation cannot. It is most defensible for a wall, roof, floor edge, reveal, or thermal bridge where available thickness is severely limited, an existing profile must be preserved, or a flexible product can fit an irregular retrofit. Start with the complete assembly—substrate, climate, moisture control, fire requirements, attachment, finish, code path, and installed cost—not with a conductivity number from a product sheet.
Aerogel blankets, sheets, coatings, and composite systems are not interchangeable. The values reported for one named grade do not describe every aerogel product or the finished wall or roof. Use the process below to decide whether aerogel belongs on your shortlist, then require current documentation for the exact product and assembly before specifying it.

Begin with the project constraint
Aerogel is a specialist response to a constrained detail, not a default replacement for all insulation. Write down why ordinary insulation will not work before looking at brands or product names.

- Very little added thickness: A narrow internal lining, window reveal, parapet, floor edge, or service zone may not accommodate the thickness needed from a conventional material.
- Preserving an existing profile: Historic trim, masonry dimensions, roof edges, room proportions, or a façade appearance may be important enough to favor a thinner intervention.
- Irregular retrofit geometry: A flexible blanket or sheet can sometimes follow complicated surfaces more readily than rigid boards.
- Targeted thermal bridges: A small junction may need a thin treatment even when the main wall has enough space for another insulation type.
Aspen Aerogels presents limited insulation space, building-physics constraints, and historic preservation as situations in which a thin Spaceloft blanket may help. Those are manufacturer statements about that product, not proof that aerogel outperforms every alternative in every building.

When another insulation is usually the better starting point
If the assembly has ample depth, the substrate is straightforward, and purchase and installation cost dominate the decision, compare conventional insulation first. A thicker, familiar system may provide the required performance with a simpler code pathway, easier detailing, and more readily available installers. Aerogel’s value proposition is strongest when its thinness or form solves a real constraint; it is not established here as a universal performance or cost winner.
Record the brief before selecting a material
- Building element: wall, roof, floor, reveal, pipe or service zone, or junction.
- Existing construction and substrate, including masonry, concrete, timber, sheathing, finishes, and any decay.
- Maximum added thickness and any dimensions that cannot change.
- Climate, rain and wind exposure, interior humidity, and temperature range.
- Thermal target, expressed for the complete assembly (for example, a required U-value), not just for the insulation layer.
- Moisture, waterproofing, and drying requirements.
- Intended interior or exterior finish and how it will be attached.
- Applicable fire, electrical, historic-preservation, energy, and local building requirements.
- Access, disruption, labor, and the sequence of preparation and finishing work.
Know which aerogel form you are evaluating
The word “aerogel” covers different products. A blanket, a coating, and a faced board can have different densities, binders, facings, test methods, installation limits, and approvals.
| Product form | Where it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible blanket or sheet | Very tight cavities, irregular surfaces, retrofit linings, reveals, and details where preserving the existing profile matters. | Exact grade, thickness, declared conductivity and test conditions, vapor behavior, substrate, attachment, finish compatibility, fire classification, and temperature limit. |
| Coating | A thin applied layer where the selected primer, coating, and finish form a tested or documented system. | Required dry-film thickness, target U-value, wall build-up, climate, substrate preparation, trial-area results, curing, moisture behavior, and local acceptance. |
| Thermal-bridge tape or faced/composite board | Narrow junctions or assemblies where a factory-facing or integrated finish helps detailing. | Current product documentation, dimensions, edge and joint details, attachment, fire and moisture approvals, and suitability for the specific junction. |
Blankets and sheets
Spaceloft is an example of a flexible aerogel blanket promoted for constrained building applications. ECOFINE describes its Aerogel A2 as a silica-and-glass-fiber blanket or sheet for renovation and low-thickness insulation. Those descriptions identify intended applications, not an approval for every wall, roof, or floor. Confirm whether the chosen grade is intended for interior or exterior use, whether it needs a facing, and how joints and penetrations are treated.

Coatings
Do not treat an insulation coating as a blanket in liquid form. Cowin reports a thermal conductivity of 0.040 W/(m·K) for a stated building-retrofit coating sample and cites report XT226-250016. The same page states an added thermal resistance of 0.26 m²·K/W for that sample context. Those figures belong to the reported product and test context; they are not a whole-wall calculation. Cowin advises reviewing the target U-value, wall build-up, climate, and local requirements and making a representative trial area with the selected primer, coating, and finish.
Other formats
Tapes and composite boards may be useful at narrow junctions, but the available evidence does not establish a particular product’s suitability for your project. Treat them as possibilities to investigate, not as pre-approved solutions.
Compare complete assemblies, not isolated conductivity
Thermal conductivity is a property of a material under specified test conditions. A building’s heat flow depends on the thickness installed, joints, fasteners, framing, air leakage, thermal bridges, surface resistances, and the rest of the wall or roof. Two products with different forms and test methods cannot be ranked by copying one number into a table.

| Named product or source | Reported value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| ECOFINE Aerogel A2 | Declared thermal conductivity: 0.016 W/(m·K). | Product-specific value from the Aerogel A2 page; it does not represent every aerogel grade or the finished assembly. |
| Cowin retrofit coating sample | Thermal conductivity: 0.040 W/(m·K); added resistance: 0.26 m²·K/W. | Values presented for a stated sample and report XT226-250016; not a whole-building result. |
| Spaceloft technical guide | Euroclass C, s1, d0; maximum operating temperature 200 °C. | Product-guide values for that grade and configuration; check the exact facing, installation, and local rules. |
| ECOFINE Aerogel A2 | EN 13501-1 class B/s1/d0. | Classification for Aerogel A2 as documented by the manufacturer; it cannot be transferred to another product or to an entire assembly. |
Ask the supplier or designer to show the calculated or tested performance of the proposed build-up at its actual thickness. Request the boundary conditions, including indoor and outdoor temperatures, moisture assumptions, framing fraction, fasteners, joints, and surface finishes. A coating’s reported resistance, for example, cannot be added to a wall schedule without checking how the coating is applied and how the substrate and finish behave.

Follow a project-specific selection sequence
1. Survey the existing building
Before enclosure work, look for roof and plumbing leaks, rising or penetrating damp, condensation, decay, insect damage, hazardous materials, structural movement, and concealed services. Building Science Corporation’s retrofit guidance treats these conditions as part of assessing a home before insulation work. That guide focuses on general retrofit practice and mineral-fiber strategies; use its assessment principles, not its material details, as aerogel installation instructions.
2. Define the thermal target
State the required U-value or heat-flow limit for the complete element and identify how the local code measures it. Include thermal bridges at edges, fasteners, framing, and junctions. If the target is not written down, a supplier cannot tell you whether a thin blanket, a coating, or a conventional build-up will work.
3. Match form and geometry
For an uneven masonry surface or a narrow reveal, a flexible sheet may be easier to fit. For a broad wall with adequate depth, a conventional board or batt may be simpler. For a coating, verify that the substrate can accept the required preparation and that the specified thickness is achievable consistently. Keep the finish and joint details in the same decision, because a material that fits the cavity but cannot be finished or sealed is not a usable system.
4. Compare like-for-like data
For every candidate, record declared conductivity, test method and conditions, thickness, calculated layer resistance, complete-assembly performance, vapor and moisture properties, fire classification, temperature limits, attachment, finish compatibility, and installed cost. Do not compare the 0.016 W/(m·K) Aerogel A2 value directly with the 0.040 W/(m·K) Cowin coating sample as if they were equivalent products; one is a blanket or sheet specification and the other is a reported coating sample.
5. Resolve moisture and drying
Inspect and repair bulk-water paths first. Confirm the vapor behavior of the full build-up, including primers, adhesives, facings, membranes, paints, and claddings. Spaceloft guidance calls for maintaining the vapor permeability of the finished solution and warns against unsuitable coatings. A hydrophobic material can resist liquid uptake while the assembly still traps vapor or leaks at a joint.

6. Check fire, heat, and electrical constraints
Use the classification for the exact product and configuration. The Spaceloft guide lists Euroclass C, s1, d0, while Aerogel A2 lists EN 13501-1 class B/s1/d0. Neither rating makes an entire wall fire-rated, and neither justifies calling a product fireproof. Near flues or heat-producing appliances, follow national regulations and the product’s temperature limits. The Spaceloft guide gives a 200 °C maximum operating temperature for its product. Where insulation restricts cooling around cables, have the electrical design checked for cable derating.
7. Obtain current documentation and approve a sample area
Request the current technical data sheet, installation instructions, fire and emissions documentation, details for joints and penetrations, and any assembly approvals for the intended geography. Survey the substrate, then install a representative trial area using the actual primer, adhesive or fastener, aerogel layer, and finish. Check adhesion, flatness, thickness, drying, condensation risk, and how openings and services are handled before committing to the whole project.
Moisture, vapor, and substrate conditions
Moisture failures usually occur at the assembly level. A blanket can be water-repellent yet still be installed over a leaking wall, a cold substrate, or a trapped-vapor configuration. The sequence is therefore: stop bulk water, confirm substrate condition, model or assess vapor movement, then choose the finish and attachment.
- Repair roof, façade, plumbing, and ground-moisture sources before insulating.
- Remove or stabilize friable, mold-damaged, or decayed material; do not cover an unresolved defect.
- Check whether the existing wall must dry inward, outward, or in both directions.
- Make sure adhesives, primers, membranes, and paints do not create an unintended vapor barrier.
- Detail seams, corners, penetrations, window returns, and transitions so air and water controls remain continuous.
If a historic wall or a moisture-sensitive assembly is involved, obtain an envelope assessment rather than relying on a generic product sheet.
Attachment, cutting, and finishing
Aerogel products can be sensitive to handling and detailing even when they are flexible. Aerogel A2 guidance says the material can be cut and drilled; it describes adhesive or mechanical attachment on brick or concrete and stapling or nailing on wood. Those are product-specific instructions, so follow the current manual for the selected grade.
Attachment questions to answer
- Is the substrate clean, sound, dry, and strong enough for the adhesive or fastener?
- Will fasteners create thermal bridges or puncture a membrane?
- How are seams held tight without gaps or excessive compression?
- Can the finish key to the facing, or is a carrier board, mesh, or additional layer required?
- What happens at corners, window frames, outlets, pipes, and structural movement joints?
Have the installer demonstrate the intended cutting and dust-control procedure, then inspect the trial area before approving production work. A nominal insulation thickness is not the installed thickness if the material is folded, crushed, gapped, or interrupted by services.

Fire and temperature information must stay product-specific
Fire classifications describe a tested product configuration. The documented difference between Spaceloft’s Euroclass C, s1, d0 and Aerogel A2’s B/s1/d0 shows why one grade’s result cannot be borrowed by another. Check the facing, adhesive, finish, mounting method, and any required reaction-to-fire or resistance rating for the whole assembly.
Recommended Free Tools
Near chimneys, flues, heaters, hot pipes, or industrial equipment, verify operating-temperature limits and clearances. The 200 °C maximum operating temperature in the Spaceloft guide applies to that product and does not replace local requirements. Electrical designers should check cable ampacity where insulation reduces heat dissipation.
Cost and “is it worth it?”
No current, representative, independently comparable installed-price or payback figure is established for aerogel building projects. Do not treat an old online price or a laboratory value as a current market benchmark. The U.S. Department of Energy describes high-cost pressurized, batch drying of large amounts of solvent from weak gel as a manufacturing challenge for aerogel-based building insulation; that statement explains a processing issue, not a retail quote.
Build a project estimate that includes:
- Material for the exact grade, thickness, facing, and expected waste.
- Substrate cleaning, drying, repair, and removal of existing finishes.
- Primer, adhesive, fasteners, membranes, mesh, carrier boards, and joint treatments.
- Labor for cutting, fitting, sealing, and quality checks.
- Access equipment, occupant protection, temporary removal of services, and reinstatement.
- Final plaster, render, cladding, paint, or other finish.
- Design, testing, moisture assessment, permits, and inspection.
Compare that installed total with a conventional assembly that meets the same thermal, moisture, fire, acoustic, and durability requirements. Aerogel can be economically rational when avoiding the loss of historic fabric, floor area, roof geometry, or expensive relocation of services; the evidence does not support a universal payback period.

The useful comparison is not “aerogel versus insulation” in the abstract. Compare options on the same building element and target assembly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Decision axis | Aerogel blanket or sheet | Aerogel coating | Conventional insulation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Added thickness | Potentially attractive where the available depth is unusually small. | Thin applied layer, but performance depends strongly on specified film thickness and the base wall. | Often needs more depth, which may be acceptable where space is available. |
| Geometry | Flexible formats may follow irregular retrofit surfaces. | Can cover complex shapes if the substrate and application process permit. | Boards, batts, or blown systems may require more regular cavities or additional framing. |
| Thermal evidence | Use the exact grade’s conductivity and assembly calculation. | Use the reported coating test and a whole-wall calculation; do not extrapolate from coating data alone. | Use product data and the same assembly method for a fair comparison. |
| Moisture and vapor | Must be integrated with the wall’s drying strategy; hydrophobicity is not a leak-control plan. | Primer, coating, and finish can alter vapor behavior. | Behavior varies by material and placement; the complete build-up still requires analysis. |
| Cost control | May carry higher material and detailing costs; no general current premium is established here. | Labor and surface preparation can dominate the estimate. | Often benefits from familiar supply chains and installation methods where thickness is available. |
Use this comparison to identify the constraint that matters most. If the project has no meaningful thickness, geometry, or preservation limitation, aerogel may not justify its additional documentation and detailing burden.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing from a headline conductivity
Problem: A low W/(m·K) number is treated as the performance of a finished wall. Fix: Require a calculation or test for the complete build-up at the installed thickness, including bridges and joints.
Transferring fire ratings
Problem: A B/s1/d0 result for Aerogel A2 or a C, s1, d0 result for Spaceloft is applied to another grade or assembly. Fix: Verify the exact configuration and the local code route.
Covering a wet or damaged substrate
Problem: Insulation hides leaks, decay, or trapped moisture. Fix: Survey, repair, dry, and document the substrate before installation.
Ignoring finish compatibility
Problem: A coating, plaster, paint, or cladding undermines adhesion or vapor drying. Fix: Test the entire primer-to-finish sequence on a representative area.
Using a marketplace listing as a specification
Problem: A listing gives no verifiable grade, test conditions, fire data, or approved assembly. Fix: Treat a listing as a lead only; obtain the manufacturer’s current documents and confirm intended use.
Assuming “thin” means easy
Problem: Narrow products still require careful seams, corners, penetrations, and transitions. Fix: Price the detailing, access, inspection, and finish work, not just the aerogel layer.
What to put in the specification
A defensible specification names the product and the system around it. Include:
- Manufacturer, exact product name, grade, facing, thickness, and permitted orientation.
- Declared thermal data, test method, and design value used in the calculation.
- Substrate preparation, moisture limits, primer, adhesive, fastener type, spacing, and joint treatment.
- Vapor-control and water-management layers, including how continuity is maintained at openings and junctions.
- Fire classification for the supplied configuration and any required assembly rating.
- Temperature limits and clearances from heat sources.
- Finish, curing, protection from damage, and inspection of the trial area.
- Waste, storage, handling, worker protection, and disposal requirements.
- Documents required for approval, permits, and handover.
Where the existing assembly, historic fabric, moisture condition, fire requirement, or code pathway is uncertain, involve a qualified building-envelope professional. There is no single aerogel specification that applies to every home or geography.
A practical decision rule
- Define the constraint: If you cannot name the thickness, geometry, preservation, or junction problem, pause before selecting aerogel.
- Set the assembly target: Establish thermal, moisture, fire, finish, and code requirements for the whole element.
- Shortlist the form: Choose blanket, sheet, coating, or another system based on the geometry and substrate.
- Demand comparable evidence: Use exact-product data and a complete-assembly calculation, not a generic aerogel claim.
- Resolve risks: Repair water problems, verify vapor drying, check fire and temperature limits, and coordinate electrical details.
- Test and price: Build a trial area and compare the full installed cost with a conventional assembly meeting the same requirements.
- Approve documentation: Specify only after current technical documents, local compliance, and installation responsibilities are clear.
The Bottom Line
Aerogel merits consideration when a project has a genuine space, geometry, or preservation constraint and the selected product can be documented as part of a complete, code-compliant assembly. If thickness is available and cost and simplicity control the decision, a conventional system may be the sounder choice. Decide from the tested build-up, moisture and fire details, installation method, and total installed cost—not from the word “aerogel” or a single laboratory number.
