For most OpenZFS datasets, start with LZ4. It is the project’s broad default when CPU headroom and latency matter. Choose ZSTD when reducing stored capacity is more important and you can spend additional CPU, normally beginning between levels 3 and 7. Keep GZIP mainly for an existing configuration or a measured, rarely accessed archive; current OpenZFS guidance says ZSTD usually delivers a similar or better ratio with better performance.
Compression is selected per dataset, affects newly written records, and must be judged on your own data. The commands and property behavior below follow the OpenZFS compression documentation, workload-tuning guidance, and zfsprops manual.

What ZFS compression changes
ZFS compression is a dataset property. When an application writes a record, ZFS tries to compress the record before storing it. A compressed block is used only when the result saves enough allocation space; otherwise ZFS keeps the uncompressed form. Every compression setting also recognizes an all-zero block and represents it as a hole rather than writing a block of zeros.

Because the property belongs to a dataset, two datasets in the same pool can use different algorithms. A child dataset can also have a value inherited from its parent, so the effective setting must be checked on the dataset that receives the writes.

The meaning of compression=on
on is not a permanent synonym for one algorithm. On pools with the lz4_compress feature enabled, on selects LZ4. Without that feature, it selects LZJB. OpenZFS documentation says newly created datasets have defaulted to on since OpenZFS 2.2.0, while older datasets keep the setting they already had. Check the property instead of assuming what an inherited or legacy value means.
Why a good ratio may not reduce allocation
Compressed blocks are rounded to whole sectors and must pass a minimum-saving threshold. OpenZFS gives a concrete example: with a 16 KiB record and 4 KiB sectors, compression must save at least 25 percent before the record occupies fewer sectors. A compressor can therefore report useful byte reduction while a particular record still consumes the same number of sectors.
LZ4, ZSTD, and GZIP compared
| Algorithm | Best starting use | Settings and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| LZ4 | General-purpose datasets; workloads where CPU headroom and latency are priorities | Fast compression and decompression with a moderate ratio. OpenZFS describes it as the safe choice when you are uncertain. |
| ZSTD | Capacity-oriented datasets that can tolerate additional CPU work | Levels 1–19 are supported. Level 1 is fastest; level 19 targets the highest ratio. Plain zstd means zstd-3; OpenZFS suggests levels 3–7 as a practical capacity-focused range. |
| GZIP | Existing deployments or a measured special case such as rarely read archival data | Levels 1–9 are supported. Plain gzip means gzip-6. OpenZFS says ZSTD generally offers similar or better compression with better performance. |
The useful comparison is not a universal compression percentage. Measure CPU cost and latency, space saved on representative files, read and decompression behavior, and how often the data is accessed. Content type, record size, sector size, storage devices, and workload shape all affect the result.

Choose according to the workload
Use LZ4 for the broad default
LZ4 is the sensible first setting for active file shares, virtual-machine images, databases, home directories, and mixed datasets when you do not have a measured reason to optimize for maximum capacity. Its purpose is to provide useful compression without making compression work a dominant part of normal I/O latency or CPU consumption.
OpenZFS states the recommendation plainly: “If you want to use compression and are uncertain which to use, use LZ4.” That is a starting policy, not a promise that LZ4 wins on every file type. If your workload is unusually compressible and storage capacity is the binding constraint, test ZSTD rather than treating the default as final.
Use ZSTD when capacity has priority
ZSTD provides a tunable trade-off. Levels 1 through 19 are available, with higher numbers generally exchanging more CPU time for a smaller representation. The unqualified property value zstd is level 3, which is a moderate starting point. For a capacity-oriented dataset, OpenZFS’s practical guidance is levels 3–7.
Start at level 3 when you want a modest change from LZ4, then test level 5 or 7 if the resulting space reduction justifies the additional CPU. Higher levels are not automatically better for a live workload: the extra compression work can increase write latency and may provide little additional saving on data that is already difficult to compress.

Keep GZIP for compatibility or a demonstrated archive benefit
GZIP remains supported, with levels 1–9 and level 6 selected by plain gzip. It can make sense when an established dataset already uses it and changing policy would require a deliberate rewrite, or when a rarely accessed archive shows a worthwhile capacity gain in testing.
For a new policy, GZIP needs a specific reason. OpenZFS describes ZSTD as offering similar or better ratios with better performance, and says GZIP’s higher ratio is usually worth considering only for data that is rarely accessed. Do not select GZIP merely because its level number is higher.
Use off for data that is already compressed or encrypted
OpenZFS’s concise guidance is to use off only for content that is already compressed or encrypted. Examples include files produced by a compression format and encrypted containers whose bytes have little remaining redundancy. Whether a particular application benefits is still workload-dependent, so verify the effect rather than assuming every such file is identical.
A decision framework before changing a dataset
- Identify the constraint. If latency and CPU headroom are the limiting factors, begin with LZ4. If pool capacity is the limiting factor and CPU is available, test ZSTD.
- Classify the data. Text, source code, logs, and many database or virtual-disk patterns can have useful redundancy. Media files, archives, encrypted containers, and already-compressed objects may not.
- Check access frequency. Frequently written or latency-sensitive data favors a lower-cost setting. A rarely read archive gives a higher compression level more time to repay its CPU cost.
- Confirm the dataset boundary. Set the property on the dataset whose future writes should use the algorithm; changing a parent does not retroactively transform data already stored in a child with its own value.
- Measure representative data. Use the same file types, record sizes, read/write pattern, and concurrency that matter in production. A generic benchmark cannot predict your result.
- Plan for old blocks. Changing the property affects new writes. If the goal is to reduce the representation of existing data, schedule a rewrite or migration and account for the temporary space and I/O it may require.
Inspect the effective setting first
Run this from a host with the ZFS command-line tools, replacing pool with the pool name:
The Tool Desk

The recursive query shows each dataset’s value, including values inherited from an ancestor. Look for an explicit algorithm such as lz4, zstd-5, or gzip-1, as well as on, off, and any legacy configuration. If on appears, check the pool’s feature state and the OpenZFS version context before treating it as LZ4.
Inspect the target dataset rather than only the pool root. A property on pool does not tell you whether pool/data or a deeper child overrides it.

zfs set compression=gzip-1 pool/archive
These are alternative examples, not commands to run together. Choose the value that matches the workload and your test results. A level suffix is optional where the algorithm has a documented default: zstd selects level 3 and gzip selects level 6.
The setting is applied as records are written. It does not recode blocks that are already on disk, and it does not turn an existing dataset into a different physical representation immediately. New files, modified blocks, and future rewrites use the new value.
Why changing the property does not reclaim old space
ZFS does not scan and recompress every existing block when you run zfs set. Data written under the previous setting stays in that representation until the blocks are rewritten. This distinction explains why a new ZSTD policy may show little immediate change on a full dataset: only subsequent writes are affected.
To transform existing data, rewrite or copy it so that new blocks are allocated under the selected property. OpenZFS identifies send/receive workflows and zfs-rewrite as ways a dataset can acquire a new on-disk representation. The appropriate method depends on your snapshot, replication, downtime, and free-space plan; preserve a verified recovery path before starting a large rewrite.

Read the ratio properties correctly
compressratio includes descendant datasets. It is useful for understanding the space effect of a hierarchy, but it can differ from the ratio of the dataset you are examining alone. refcompressratio reports the ratio for the referenced dataset itself. Compare these values with logicalused and used so the ratio is connected to actual pool consumption rather than viewed as an isolated score.
Build a representative test
- Use a copy of the real file mix, not a synthetic stream chosen only because it compresses well.
- Include the write pattern that matters: sequential ingest, small random updates, database checkpoints, virtual-machine churn, or another production behavior.
- Record elapsed time, CPU utilization, latency, logical bytes written, physical space consumed, and read behavior.
- Allow enough data to cross normal record and sector boundaries; a tiny sample can hide allocation rounding effects.
- Repeat the test for LZ4 and the ZSTD levels you are considering. Include GZIP only when a compatibility or archive case justifies the comparison.
No published ratio can substitute for this test on your hardware. The project’s guidance is a useful default, while the winner for a particular dataset is an empirical result.

What published ratio figures do—and do not—tell you
OpenZFS’s workload-tuning page relays historical tests by the LZ4 project on the Silesia corpus: an average ratio of 2.1:1 for LZ4 and 2.7:1 for gzip-1. The page does not state a year for those tests. They are results for a named corpus, not expected ratios for a ZFS pool, and they do not include your record size, sector size, storage system, or access pattern.
That comparison illustrates why GZIP can produce a higher ratio in some data while also costing more performance. It does not establish that gzip-1 will beat LZ4 on your files, nor that a higher ratio will translate directly into fewer allocated sectors.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming on always means LZ4
on follows the pool’s available feature set and the OpenZFS version history. Query the actual dataset and confirm whether the pool has lz4_compress enabled. If you need an unambiguous policy, set an explicit algorithm such as lz4 or zstd-5.
Expecting an instant space reduction
A property change is not a rewrite. Check new writes separately from old blocks, and schedule a controlled rewrite or copy when converting existing data is worth the I/O and temporary capacity.
Choosing by headline ratio alone
Compression ratio is only one axis. A level that saves a few more sectors may increase CPU use or write latency enough to hurt the application. Evaluate ratio, latency, CPU, and read behavior together.
Blaming the compressor for a record-size effect
Sector rounding and the minimum-saving threshold can make two datasets with similar logical compressibility consume different physical space. recordsize is a separate workload-tuning decision. Larger records can improve ratios for compressible data, but do not change recordsize solely to chase a compression number.
Recommended Free Tools
Compressing data that has no useful redundancy
Already-compressed and encrypted content often offers little opportunity for another compression pass. Follow the OpenZFS guidance to consider off for such data, then verify with a representative sample rather than applying a blanket rule to every file in a mixed dataset.
Best Value
Applying a parent setting without checking children
Dataset properties can be inherited or overridden. A recursive property query reveals the effective value throughout the tree; use that output to find datasets that are still using a different algorithm.
Practical starting policies
Mixed, active storage
Set explicit lz4 on a general-purpose dataset, then monitor CPU, latency, and the measured ratio. This is the least surprising starting point when workloads change over time.
Capacity-focused file or backup dataset
Test zstd, zstd-5, and zstd-7 against representative data. Keep the lowest level that meets the capacity target without violating the write-latency or CPU budget.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Cold archive with an existing GZIP policy
Leave GZIP in place when compatibility and operational stability matter, or compare it with ZSTD during a planned migration. A new archive should normally require measured evidence before choosing GZIP over ZSTD.
Encrypted or precompressed repository
Test off against the current setting. If the files are already compressed or encrypted, avoiding a second compression pass may be the more appropriate policy.
The short answer for a new dataset
Use explicit lz4 when you need a dependable general-purpose choice. Use zstd at level 3, then test levels 5–7 when capacity is more valuable than CPU and latency. Use GZIP only for an existing configuration or a measured, infrequently accessed archive where its trade-off is acceptable. In every case, verify the effective property, remember that old blocks are unchanged, and measure the result on representative data.
