Choose a youth goalie mask by verifying the exact helmet-and-cage configuration against the current certification list and the child’s league rules, then checking the fit with the goalie wearing it. Certification is an important product screen, but it cannot tell you whether a particular mask fits your child or prevent every injury.
Start with the goalie, not the size label
Bring the child to try on the mask. The CDC recommends measuring around the head just above the eyebrows and ears, with the tape held level, and using the manufacturer’s sizing directions alongside an actual fitting. Age or a label such as “youth” or “junior” is not a substitute for checking fit.

With the mask on, check that the helmet is stable and its padding contacts the head and face as intended. Face pads should feel snug without pressing too tightly. The child should be able to move naturally while the mask stays in position. See the CDC’s Hockey Goalie Helmet Safety fact sheet for its fit guidance.

- Cage clearance: The CDC says the cage or facemask should be no more than one inch from the face. The cage may be a different size from the helmet, so check the assembled mask on the child.
- Chin cup: It should sit centered under the chin and feel snug.
- Neck protection: A throat protector or neck guard should fit snugly and completely cover the throat. Check coverage while the goalie moves, and follow the product maker’s fit directions.
These are fit checks, not a certification of a specific neck guard. HECC operates a neck laceration protector certification program; verify the exact item and the rule that applies to the child’s competition.

Verify the exact mask configuration and league rules
Search the current HECC certified equipment listing for the precise goalie headgear model, size, and mask/cage configuration. The listing includes product-specific names and sizes, including youth and junior examples. Do not assume that certification of a brand, product family, or similar-looking configuration automatically applies to the one being considered.
Rules depend on the governing body, age group, and location. HECC says players in USA Hockey-sanctioned events through age 21, and players in high-school events under Federation rules, must wear HECC-certified goalie headgear and facemask. Check the HECC consumer FAQ and confirm the current requirement with the child’s league or governing body. Do not transfer a rule from one competition system to another.

Check the sticker on a used helmet
For used equipment, inspect the certification sticker as well as the mask’s condition. USA Hockey’s 2025–2029 guidance says an expired HECC helmet certification is no longer current. Confirm the sticker’s status and the applicable league rule before relying on a secondhand helmet; a listing entry alone does not establish that a particular used item remains certified or is in suitable condition. USA Hockey’s protective-equipment and 2025–2029 rules guidance provides its stated context.

Understand what certification testing does—and does not—show
HECC describes testing goalie mask combinations for coverage and field of vision, checking whether a simulated stick blade can make contact through openings, and firing a puck at the mask to assess cage breakage. Its overview specifies an 80 mph puck test condition; that is a laboratory test condition, not a recommended playing speed or a promise of protection. HECC also says the helmet portion is tested for chin-strap strength and elongation, and impact absorption. See HECC’s overview of product certification testing.

Certification is useful for screening the product configuration against a standard. It does not assess fit on an individual child or guarantee that injury cannot occur. As the CDC puts it: “While there is no concussion-proof helmet, a hockey goalie helmet can help protect your athlete from a serious brain or head injury.”
Build a checklist for the rest of the goalie’s gear
A mask is only one part of the setup. The CDC’s goalie-specific list names catching and stick gloves, a chest and stomach protector, goalie skates, leg pads, and shoulder and arm protectors. Other rulesets specify additional items. USA Hockey equipment guidance discusses gloves, shin pads, shoulder and elbow pads, hip pads or padded hockey pants, a protective cup, and required head protection. NFHS’s 2024–25 goalkeeper summary includes a neck laceration protector, flapper-style throat protector, padded pants or hip pads, cup or pelvic protector, chest and arm protector, and a full face mask and helmet with chin strap, among other gear.

Those lists reflect different rulesets and dates, not one universal checklist. Use the child’s current league rules for the applicable age group and competition. The NFHS 2024–25 ice hockey rules changes are specific to that school-sports context.
Compare options using checks you can verify
- Is the exact model, size, and mask/cage configuration on the current HECC list, and does the relevant ruleset accept it?
- Does the helmet fit the child, with snug face pads, cage clearance within the CDC’s guidance, and a centered, snug chin cup?
- For used gear, is the certification sticker current, and is the item’s condition acceptable?
- Does the neck protection cover the throat during movement, and does it meet the applicable rule?
- Does the rest of the protective setup fit and meet requirements for the goalie’s age and competition?
The cited guidance supports these checks, but it does not establish a current model ranking by price, weight, durability, or on-ice performance. Compare those factors only using reliable information specific to the products you are considering.
