Choose the Classic version first, then choose a realm inside that version. The version determines the world, expansion, progression track, or special rules you will play. The realm determines your region, language, faction community, rule set, and day-to-day population. In 2026, Blizzard lists five distinct Classic experiences: Classic Era, Classic Hardcore, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, Mists of Pandaria Classic, and Season of Discovery.
Check the live realm selector and Blizzard’s realm-status information immediately before creating a character. Realm populations, faction balance, availability, transfer policies, and active game phases can change, and a character’s progress stays on its current Classic iteration rather than moving freely between versions.

Understand what “server” means in WoW Classic
Returning players often use “server” to describe two different choices. First, you choose the game version or client: for example, Classic Era, Season of Discovery, or Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition. Second, you choose a realm within that version. A realm is the individual world where your characters, guild, economy, and most social relationships exist.
Recommended Free Tools
These choices are not interchangeable. A busy realm in Season of Discovery cannot substitute for a quieter Classic Era realm, and a character created in the Anniversary progression track does not become a Classic Era character simply because both versions began with the original game world. Decide which version matches your desired experience before comparing realm names.

Compare the five Classic versions available in 2026
| Version | Best fit | What makes it different | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Era | Players who want the original-world experience to remain the focus | The original Classic setting without following the Anniversary progression track | Realm availability and population must be checked live; no current population figure is established here |
| Classic Hardcore | Players who enjoy one-life stakes and permanent consequences | A character that dies cannot continue playing on that Hardcore realm | After death, the character can only be played again if an applicable transfer to a non-Hardcore realm is available |
| Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition | Players returning to continue the Anniversary progression track | Anniversary characters moved forward into Burning Crusade Classic after the January 2026 changeover | Do not assume an expansion beyond the officially announced path; check Blizzard’s current announcements |
| Mists of Pandaria Classic | Players who specifically want the later expansion’s zones, classes, systems, and content | A later-expansion version rather than the original Classic or Burning Crusade setting | It is a separate Classic iteration, so progress does not transfer to the other versions |
| Season of Discovery | Players who want a modified version of the original game | Class-altering runes grant abilities unavailable in standard WoW Classic, alongside additional activities | Its rules and faction-creation limits can differ from other Classic versions |
Blizzard’s Classic landing page is the correct place to confirm which versions are currently active. The list above reflects the versions identified there, but the available phases and realm lists are not permanent. A version can have different realms, transfer rules, or faction restrictions from another version with a similar name.
Classic Era versus the Anniversary track
Classic Era is the choice for a player who wants the original Classic world to stay the destination. The Anniversary track is a progression path. Blizzard’s January 2026 notice stated that remaining Anniversary characters continued into Burning Crusade Classic after Anniversary realms went offline for maintenance. That change did not turn Classic Era into Burning Crusade Classic; the two remain separate destinations.
Season of Discovery versus standard Classic
Season of Discovery uses the Classic foundation but changes class possibilities through runes and adds activities not present in the standard version. Choose it because you want experimentation and altered class roles, not because a particular realm name looks popular. Your Season of Discovery character belongs to that version and does not become a Classic Era character.

Hardcore is appropriate only when the one-life rule is part of the appeal. Blizzard Support states that a character who dies cannot be played again on Hardcore unless transferred to a non-Hardcore realm under the applicable rules. Treat the death consequence as the primary selection criterion, ahead of population or guild size.
Use this order when choosing a realm
- Select the intended version in the launcher. Confirm that you are entering Classic Era, Hardcore, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, Mists of Pandaria Classic, or Season of Discovery before opening the realm list. The realm selector is version-specific, so a name you remember from another client may not appear.
- Choose the ruleset. Decide whether you want Normal, PvP, RP, or Hardcore rules. Normal is Blizzard’s standard experience. PvP realms allow player attacks in the open world. RP realms are intended for role-play. Hardcore applies the one-life restriction. If you do not specifically want open-world conflict or permadeath, Normal is the safer default.
- Agree with friends or your guild before making characters. Confirm the exact version, realm, faction, and time zone they use. “We play Classic” is incomplete: your friends may mean Era, Season of Discovery, or the Anniversary track, and a shared faction does not help if your characters are on different realms.
- Check the current region and language fit. Select the region where you normally play and look for the language community in which you can communicate comfortably. A realm with a high overall population may still have few players of your faction, language, or preferred play schedule.
- Check live availability immediately before character creation. Blizzard’s realm-status pages expose current server availability and population fields. Verify the relevant region and Classic version, then confirm the same information in the in-game realm selector. Population is a live value, not a permanent ranking.
- Match the realm to your main activity. Raiding, battlegrounds, role-play, leveling with others, and an active auction house each benefit from a different kind of community. Ask the guild or group you intend to join which realm and faction they actually use rather than selecting solely from a population label.
- Read the transfer rules for that exact mode. Transfers are version- and ruleset-specific. Do not create a character assuming that a later free move, a paid transfer, or a move from Hardcore will necessarily be available.
Pick the right ruleset for your risk tolerance
Normal realms
Normal realms have no special rules and are considered the standard experience, according to Blizzard Support. They are the sensible starting point for most returning players who want questing, dungeons, professions, and endgame content without automatic open-world player attacks. Normal does not guarantee a quiet realm or a balanced faction population; it describes the realm’s rules, not its activity level.
PvP realms
PvP realms enable player attacks and create the possibility of contested travel, questing, and resource gathering. Choose one when that danger is a feature you actively want. If you mainly want predictable leveling or are returning after a long break, Normal avoids the additional risk of being attacked while learning current routes and systems.
RP realms
RP realms are intended for role-play. The value comes from finding players who enjoy that style, so check the guild and community culture rather than treating the RP label as a population guarantee. A role-player who joins a realm solely because it is busy may find that the social environment does not match their expectations.
Hardcore realms
Hardcore gives every dangerous pull and travel decision more weight because death ends normal play for that character. Blizzard Support says a dead Hardcore character cannot be played again unless transferred to a non-Hardcore realm under the applicable transfer option. Before selecting Hardcore, decide whether you would accept losing a character after a disconnect, mistake, or difficult encounter. If the answer is no, choose a non-Hardcore ruleset.
How region, language, faction, and schedule affect your choice
Realm population is only useful when it describes the community you can actually play with. Consider four dimensions together:
- Region and latency: A realm in your normal region generally gives you a more convenient schedule and connection path. Confirm the region in the realm selector instead of relying on a familiar name.
- Language: Choose a community where group communication, guild announcements, and customer-support interactions are practical for you.
- Faction: The total realm population can hide a weak faction. Ask your intended guild which faction has active leveling groups, dungeon runs, raids, and battleground participation.
- Play schedule: A realm can be active during one time zone’s evening and quiet during yours. Guild raid times and leveling activity are better evidence for your routine than a single population label.
No reliable named realm ranking or current population estimate is established here. Blizzard’s status pages provide live fields, but those values change and should be checked at the time you create the character.
Check live realm status without guessing
- Open Blizzard’s current WoW Classic landing page and identify the version you intend to play.
- Open the region-appropriate realm-status information for that version.
- Note whether the realm is available, its current population indication, and any faction-creation or maintenance message.
- Launch the matching Classic client and compare the in-game realm selector with the status page.
- Refresh the list immediately before final character creation if the realm was recently full, under maintenance, or subject to a faction restriction.
Do not infer current availability from an old forum post, a video, or a realm list captured during an earlier phase. Realm status, queues, and creation restrictions can change between sessions.

In Season of Discovery, Blizzard has said that PvP realms may temporarily limit creation for a dominant faction to help maintain balance. This is a version-specific policy and should not be assumed to apply identically to Classic Era, Hardcore, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, or Mists of Pandaria Classic.
Rank #3
If a realm blocks your desired faction, first confirm that the restriction is temporary and applies to new characters rather than existing ones. Then decide whether to wait, select another realm with your group, or choose the other faction. Do not create a character on a different version merely because its faction button is available; you would be solving a short-term creation problem by changing the entire game experience.
Transfers, progression, and the cost of choosing the wrong realm
A realm choice is not always permanent, but it should be treated as consequential. Blizzard announced that free Anniversary-to-Era transfers ended when Anniversary realms went offline for maintenance on January 12, 2026. Characters left on Anniversary realms continued into Burning Crusade Classic. That deadline was tied to the Anniversary changeover and is not a general promise that characters can move between every Classic version.
The original 20th Anniversary announcement also described different transfer rules for Normal PvE, PvP, and Hardcore characters. It included restrictions for Normal PvE and PvP realms and a Hardcore-to-Normal PvE transfer path under stated conditions. Those rules were mode-specific and time-sensitive. Check the current transfer screen for the exact version and ruleset before relying on any move.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBecause progress remains on its current Classic iteration, a character cannot simply carry its items, levels, achievements, or guild membership into another version. A transfer option, when available, is not the same thing as cross-version progression. If your friends are on a different version, the practical solution is usually to create a new character there rather than assume your existing one can follow.
Access, subscription, and what you do not need to buy
Blizzard’s Classic page says an active WoW subscription or Game Time provides access to WoW Classic versions. You do not need a separate physical game purchase to select a version or realm. The paid requirement is the active subscription or Game Time associated with the WoW account.
That access does not guarantee a particular realm, faction, population, or transfer option. Those are live service conditions that must be checked in the client and current Blizzard notices.

Recommendations for common returning-player goals
| Your priority | Start with | Next decision | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original world, standard experience | Classic Era | Choose a currently available Normal, PvP, or RP realm that fits your group | It keeps the original Classic setting as the main destination |
| Continue the Anniversary progression | Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition | Use the version’s current realm list and verify the announced progression path | Remaining Anniversary characters continued into Burning Crusade Classic after January 2026 |
| Modified Classic with new class possibilities | Season of Discovery | Check rune systems, realm rules, and any faction-creation limit | Runes grant abilities unavailable in standard WoW Classic |
| Later-expansion content | Mists of Pandaria Classic | Find the realm and faction used by your friends or guild | It provides a later expansion’s content and systems |
| One-life challenge | Classic Hardcore | Confirm that you accept the death consequence and current transfer rules | Death ends normal play on that Hardcore character |
These are version and ruleset recommendations, not population rankings. The best individual realm depends on your region, language, faction, friends, guild, and preferred hours.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing a realm before choosing the version
Problem: You select a familiar realm name and discover that your friends are playing a different Classic iteration.
Fix: Confirm the client and version first, then select from the realm list shown for that version.
Assuming “Classic” means one game
Problem: You expect Era, Season of Discovery, and Anniversary characters to share progression.
Fix: Treat each listed Classic experience as its own destination. Ask friends to name the exact version, not just “Classic.”
Using total population as the only criterion
Problem: A high-population realm has little activity for your faction, language, or play hours.
Best Value
Fix: Check the live status and ask the guild you plan to join about faction activity and scheduled events.
Selecting PvP for popularity when you dislike world conflict
Problem: Leveling becomes frustrating because player attacks are part of the realm’s rules.
Fix: Choose Normal unless open-world PvP is something you specifically want.
Choosing Hardcore without planning for death
Problem: A single death, disconnect, or mistake removes access to normal play on that character.
Fix: Select Hardcore only after confirming that the one-life rule is the reason you are returning.
Relying on an expired transfer promise
Problem: You expect an Anniversary-to-Era move or another free transfer that has already closed.
Fix: Read the current transfer screen and Blizzard announcement for your exact mode before creating a character.

A final pre-creation checklist
- Have I selected the exact Classic version I want?
- Are my friends or guild on that same version, realm, and faction?
- Does the ruleset match my tolerance for open-world PvP and permanent death?
- Is the realm in the region and language community I can use comfortably?
- Does its current population and faction activity fit my normal play hours?
- Have I checked the live realm selector rather than relying on an old list?
- Have I read the current transfer rules for this version and ruleset?
- If I am choosing Hardcore, do I accept that death ends normal play for this character?
If every answer is clear, create the character. If one is uncertain, resolve that point first; changing a name later is easier than rebuilding a character, guild network, and progression path on another Classic version.
