Choose by what will make you want to keep watching: a nearby team you can see in person, players or basketball that hold your attention, a history or identity you connect with, and games you can actually watch where you live. You can sample several teams before picking a favorite.
Start with the kind of connection you want
Think about what would make following a team rewarding for you. If the experience of going to games matters, begin with the team nearest you. If you mainly watch on screen, notice which players and matchups keep your attention. History and team identity can help decide between two teams you already enjoy. These are personal criteria, not a ranking of team quality.

- Local connection: Is there a team you could realistically see in person?
- On-court interest: Which players or games make you want to watch the next possession?
- History and identity: Does a team’s story or connection to its city resonate with you?
- Viewing access: Can you watch its games through services available in your location?
Check the local option first
The WNBA’s official directory lists 15 teams for the 2026 season, including expansion teams Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire. Use the official team directory to find team profiles, rosters, schedules, and ticket links. Check the current schedule and venue before planning to attend; team locations and future plans can change.
For 2026, each team was scheduled to play 44 regular-season games. That schedule length can mean many chances to follow a nearby team, but it does not say anything about which team is the best fit for you.

Watch a few teams and see whose games hold your attention
You do not need to make a permanent choice before you know what you enjoy watching. Follow a few teams or players, watch several games, and notice which ones you find yourself returning to. You might connect with a player first and then become interested in that player’s team; you might also discover that a particular team’s games are simply more engaging to you.
A free WNBA ID lets you select a favorite team, follow players, and receive tailored content and updates. The WNBA app supports team and score following, content, and recaps. Use those tools to keep up while you explore rather than treating your first selection as final.

Use history as a tie-breaker, not a scorecard
If you are choosing between teams you already like watching, their histories and identities may help you decide. The league’s history page is a place to start exploring the WNBA’s past. For example, the Las Vegas Aces’ third championship over Phoenix is one possible thread to follow if a championship story interests you.
A title count or a broadcast spotlight is not a measure of how well a team suits a new fan. Choose history because the story matters to you, not because it is supposed to establish an objectively correct favorite.

The WNBA’s 2026 national broadcast release reported 216 nationally distributed games and named ABC/ESPN, Prime Video, CBS Sports/Paramount+, ION, NBC/Peacock/NBCSN, USA Network, and NBA TV among its distribution partners. Which option works depends on the particular game and your location, so check the schedule and the broadcaster listing for games you want to see.
League Pass offers live and on-demand games, with monthly and annual billing options shown on its official page. Availability varies by country and within local team markets. In the United States, games nationally televised on the listed partner platforms are not available live on League Pass, though they are available the following day. Check access for the specific game and your location before subscribing.

Choose now—or keep sampling
- Pick a starting point: Choose a nearby team if attending games is important, or begin with a player or matchup that interests you.
- Follow and watch: Use WNBA ID or the app to keep up, then watch several games across the teams you are considering.
- Check access: Confirm where the games you want to watch are available, including any local-market or broadcast restrictions.
- Notice your habits: Which games do you look forward to, talk about, or seek out afterward? Let that answer guide your favorite.
There is no need to select a team for life. A favorite can start as a practical choice—such as a local team—and deepen as you learn its players and story, or shift as you discover what kind of basketball you enjoy.
Keep an eye on future team changes
League plans can affect which team is local to you over time. The WNBA has announced approved expansion teams in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia planned to begin play in 2028, 2029, and 2030, respectively. Separately, NBA Communications reported a planned Connecticut Sun relocation to Houston in 2027; Mohegan Sun Arena is to remain the team’s home for the 2026 season. Treat future markets and venues as subject to change, and verify them through current official team information before making plans around a location.
