Then compare memory, storage, screen, weight, ports and battery life, and check app compatibility before checkout.
Start with the work your laptop must do
List the applications and tasks that matter: everyday browsing and office work, frequent video calls, photo or video editing, gaming, specialist school or business software, or travel with the laptop every day. Check the software maker’s requirements for demanding or specialist apps. A computer can meet Windows 11’s system requirements and still be a poor fit for the programs you rely on.

Make a note of how many browser tabs and apps you typically keep open, whether you work with large files, and how much you need to store locally. These details help set sensible memory, graphics and storage targets.
Understand what Windows 11 requirements do—and do not—tell you
Microsoft’s Windows 11 compatibility floor includes a compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics and an HD 720p display larger than 9 inches. These are installation and compatibility requirements, not a recommendation that 4 GB of RAM or 64 GB of storage will suit your workload. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
For Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use, Microsoft requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during initial device setup. Check the Windows edition and setup details on the exact listing you plan to buy; do not assume that every listing or edition has identical terms.
Choose the processor and graphics for your applications
Use the requirements for the software you run and credible reviews of the exact laptop configuration. Microsoft’s buying guide points to Core i5/i7 and Ryzen 5/7 classes as mid-level options for performance and speed, but a family name alone cannot predict how a particular laptop performs. Chip generation, cooling and power settings also matter.
For graphics-heavy work or games, check whether the application calls for a discrete GPU. Microsoft names NVIDIA GeForce RTX, AMD Radeon RX and Intel Arc among discrete graphics options in its gaming guidance, while noting that requirements vary by game. Compare the specific processor and graphics configuration—not just the brand printed on the case—with the software you intend to use. Microsoft’s PC and laptop buying guide offers workload-based guidance.

Set memory and storage targets that fit your workload
Microsoft says 8 GB of RAM can be fine for light browsing and many tasks, while photo or video editing may call for closer to 16 GB. Its gaming guidance suggests 16–64 GB depending on the game and other needs. These are workload-specific recommendations, not guarantees of performance.
Storage needs depend on your files and applications. A library of large games or media can call for substantially more room: Microsoft’s gaming guidance cites 512 GB–2 TB or more. Its AI-focused guidance lists 16 GB or more of RAM and 256 GB to 1 TB or more of storage. If you expect to keep large projects, games or video files on the laptop, allow for them when choosing capacity rather than relying on the minimum needed to install Windows.
Check whether the specific model allows RAM or storage upgrades. Product families may include configurations with different capacities, and upgradeability is not established for every model. Confirm the model number and the exact listing before purchase; a similar product name does not guarantee the same components.

Decide whether you need a Copilot+ PC
Copilot+ is a separate hardware category, not another name for every Windows 11 laptop or every PC described as AI-capable. Microsoft’s current specifications call for a compatible processor or system-on-a-chip with an NPU rated at 40+ TOPS, 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage. Its listed compatible families include AMD Ryzen AI 300/400, Intel Core Ultra 200V/300V and Qualcomm Snapdragon X. Consult Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications for current requirements and supported processor lists, which can change.

Individual Copilot+ features may have additional requirements, and availability can vary by region and device. If you do not need those features, choose based on the performance, portability, screen, battery and compatibility your everyday tasks require instead.

Screen
Choose a screen size and resolution that suit your work and how you use the laptop. FHD, QHD and 4K are options discussed in Microsoft’s guidance for gaming and AI-related use, not resolutions every buyer needs. Think about comfortable working space, portability and the applications you use before paying for a higher-resolution panel.

Weight and ports
Check the listed weight against how often you carry the laptop. Match its ports to the displays, drives, accessories and other devices you actually connect. A USB-C hub is an optional workaround if the laptop you select lacks ports you need; it is not a required purchase for every laptop.
Battery life
Treat advertised “up to” battery life as a claim measured under particular conditions, not a promise that the laptop will last through your workday. Prefer independent reviews that disclose their testing method and reflect mixed use close to your routine. Compare results only when the test conditions are similar; the TechRadar discussion of what matters in laptop specifications in 2026 also emphasizes workload tradeoffs and battery testing.
Check app compatibility, especially with Arm laptops
Common browser, office, video-call and media workflows may work well on Arm-based laptops, but that does not establish compatibility for every program or peripheral. Before choosing Arm, identify any older or specialist application, device driver or accessory you depend on. Confirm current support with the software or device maker, particularly for tools that are essential to work or school.
Quick Recap
Verify the exact configuration before checkout
- Match the model number: Confirm the precise model and configuration on the retailer’s listing, not just the product-family name.
- Check the components: Verify processor, graphics, RAM, storage and display against your needs and software requirements.
- Review everyday details: Compare weight, ports and battery results from reviews with disclosed, comparable test conditions.
- Confirm Windows and compatibility: Check the Windows edition, setup requirements and support for any essential Arm software, drivers or peripherals.
- Compare the full configuration: Make sure the price you compare is for the hardware you intend to buy, since a single product family can have materially different configurations.
