How to Choose a Wi-Fi Router for an NBN 500 Plan

For an NBN plan with a nominal 500 Mbps download tier, look for a Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) or newer router with Gigabit Ethernet on both its WAN and LAN ports. That is a sensible starting point—not a guarantee that a phone or laptop will reach 500 Mbps over Wi-Fi. Confirm the router works with your retail provider and NBN connection technology, then choose one router, mesh Wi-Fi or a wired access point according to your home’s coverage needs.

What matters most when choosing a router for NBN 500

Evaluate the whole connection, not just the number printed on a router’s box. The service tier, provider, router, cabling, ports, Wi-Fi conditions and the device receiving the signal can all affect the result. NBN says actual internet experience varies with factors including access technology, provider, plan, busy-period usage and equipment. Its router guidance and home optimisation advice are useful starting points, but your retail provider must confirm requirements for your specific service.

  • Wi-Fi generation: Wi-Fi 6 or newer is a reasonable baseline for a new purchase.
  • Ports: choose Gigabit Ethernet WAN and LAN ports for a sub-gigabit plan.
  • Coverage: base the decision between a single router and additional access points on the home’s layout and signal conditions.
  • Compatibility: verify the router and any required setup settings with your ISP.
  • Client devices: an older phone, laptop or other device may not use the full capability of a new router.

Does Wi-Fi 6 mean you will get 500 Mbps?

No. Wi-Fi 6 is a useful generation-level selection criterion, not a promise of a particular speed on an individual device or in every room. NBN’s published comparison gives typical maximums of up to 1 Gbps for Wi-Fi 6 and up to 500 Mbps for Wi-Fi 5. NBN expressly describes the figures as a guide; capabilities vary, and they are not real-world speed guarantees. See NBN’s router guidance.

Wi-Fi generation in NBN’s guide Published typical maximum What to take from it
Wi-Fi 5 Up to 500 Mbps A guide figure, not a guarantee that one client will achieve 500 Mbps.
Wi-Fi 6 Up to 1 Gbps A higher guide figure, still not a real-world promise or a guaranteed speed for a single device.

Those figures describe Wi-Fi generations in NBN’s guide; they do not establish the speed you will see on a particular device. The client’s Wi-Fi capability, distance, walls, interference, router placement and simultaneous household use all matter. A router’s advertised aggregate Wi-Fi rate should not be read as the expected speed for one device in one room.

For a new router purchase, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) or newer is a sensible baseline. NBN’s general advice is to check for at least Wi-Fi 6 or newer when seeking to make the most of an internet connection, while noting that the right equipment depends on the plan and the household’s needs. Older Wi-Fi devices can still connect to a newer router, but they may not benefit from all its capabilities. NBN discusses device compatibility in its connected devices guidance.

Check the Ethernet ports before buying

For plans at or above 100 Mbps and below 1 Gbps, NBN specifies Gigabit Ethernet WAN and LAN ports. WAN means the router’s connection toward the NBN connection equipment; LAN means the connection from the router to a wired device. Confirm that both types of port are Gigabit Ethernet rather than assuming a router has them because its Wi-Fi label sounds fast. NBN explains the port requirement and notes that an Ethernet-connected device is limited by the router port speed in its router guidance.

Ports are only one part of a wired path. If you want to test or use a wired connection, the cable and the device’s Ethernet port also need to support the speed you are trying to achieve. A slower port anywhere along that path can become the limit, regardless of the router’s Wi-Fi generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow the connection from service to device

When comparing router specifications, trace the route the data takes: from the NBN connection equipment into the router’s WAN port, through the router, and out over Wi-Fi or a LAN port to the device. The WAN port matters for the incoming connection; LAN ports matter when a computer, television or access point is wired to the router. A Gigabit label on only one side does not tell you that every part of the path supports the speed you want. Check both port types, plus the cable and wired device where applicable.

This is also why a router’s wireless marketing number cannot substitute for checking the Ethernet specifications. The plan, connection equipment, router ports and client capability are separate parts of the setup. For this sub-gigabit plan, NBN’s guidance makes Gigabit Ethernet WAN and LAN the relevant baseline; it does not mean each Wi-Fi device is guaranteed to receive the plan’s full nominal download tier.

Choose one router, mesh or a wired access point by coverage need

A single router may be enough if it can provide a dependable signal where the household actually uses its devices. Coverage depends on more than the plan speed: the floorplan, building materials, router position, appliances and other potential interference sources can affect the signal. NBN notes that one router may not provide full coverage, which can lead to slower speeds or dropouts, and says mesh may help in larger or multi-storey properties. Its home optimisation advice also covers placement and ways to improve coverage.

Option When it makes sense What to consider
One Wi-Fi router The signal reaches the rooms where devices are used. Place it centrally, raised and in an open position; test coverage in distant rooms.
Mesh Wi-Fi A larger or multi-storey layout has areas the main router does not cover well. Useful for extending coverage where needed; it is not necessary for every NBN 500 household.
Wired access point or direct Ethernet A device or part of the home can be connected by cable, or a wired access point can be positioned where coverage is needed. Can provide an alternative to relying on a distant Wi-Fi signal; confirm that cabling and ports support the intended speed.

Do not buy mesh solely because the plan is 500 Mbps. It solves a coverage problem, not a plan-tier problem. If the router’s signal is already reliable in the rooms that matter, a single suitable router may be adequate. If a far room or another floor has weak or unstable reception, investigate placement first, then consider mesh or a wired access point according to the building and available cabling.

Improve placement before adding equipment

  • Put the router in a central location relative to the devices that use it.
  • Raise it and keep it in an open position rather than tucked into a cabinet or behind furniture.
  • Avoid placing it beside thick masonry, large appliances or likely sources of interference.
  • Check the signal in the rooms where performance matters, not just beside the router.

How to decide whether coverage equipment is justified

Start with where the weak signal occurs and whether the router is positioned sensibly. If reception is poor only in a distant room, the issue may be coverage rather than the plan tier or the router’s maximum advertised rate. A mesh system is one option for a larger or multi-storey home where a single router does not reach the places that matter. If you can run Ethernet, a wired access point or a direct wired connection is another option. These approaches address different layouts, so there is no need to add coverage equipment if one well-placed router already serves the household reliably.

When comparing options, consider the home’s floorplan and construction together with the rooms and devices that need service. Do not assume that a mesh kit will guarantee a particular speed in every location; NBN’s guidance supports it as a way to help with coverage, not as a promise of a specified throughput. A cable-fed access point also depends on the cable and its ports supporting the intended connection speed.

Check provider and NBN compatibility before purchase

Router setup requirements can depend on the retail provider and the NBN access technology at the property. The available information does not establish one router model or one set of settings that is guaranteed to work for every service. Before buying, ask the provider to confirm compatibility with your exact connection and whether the router needs particular settings. NBN also explains that actual performance depends on the access technology, provider and plan, among other conditions, in its frequently asked questions about more fibre.

Check the provider’s advice for your service rather than treating the router’s Wi-Fi generation as proof of compatibility. If the provider supplies or recommends a router, compare its specifications against the practical criteria here—especially Gigabit WAN and LAN ports and suitability for your coverage needs.

Match the router to household devices and use

A new router cannot upgrade the Wi-Fi radio inside an older phone, laptop, television or other connected device. The least capable part of the path can limit the result for that device. The number of devices and what they are doing at the same time also matter: several active users and devices can share the connection, so a speed test on one device is not a guarantee that every device can each use the plan’s full download tier at once. NBN outlines these considerations in its connected devices guidance.

For context, NBN cites OMDIA’s 2023 Fiber Development Index Analysis for a global average of around 25 connected devices in a fixed-broadband household. That is a global figure, not a count specific to Australian households, and connected does not mean every device is using substantial bandwidth at the same moment. Think about the devices and activities in your own home rather than using the global average as a buying requirement.

Use your actual household pattern to compare routers. Consider how many devices connect, which ones are older, and whether several people are likely to be using the connection at once. The device count alone is not a complete measure of demand: a device that is connected but idle is not the same as multiple household members actively using the internet simultaneously. The practical point is to avoid expecting one new router to make every older device perform like a newer one, or to ensure every device can each receive the whole plan tier at once.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Confirm the service: identify your retail provider and NBN connection technology, then ask the provider whether the router is compatible and whether any particular setup is required.
  2. Set the wireless baseline: look for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) or newer. Treat generation-rate figures and advertised aggregate Wi-Fi rates as guides, not promised client speeds.
  3. Verify both port types: check for Gigabit Ethernet WAN and LAN ports. Also check the cable and wired device if you plan to use Ethernet.
  4. Assess coverage: consider the floorplan, construction and the rooms where devices are used. Start with placement; add mesh or a wired access point only if the signal needs extending.
  5. Consider device age and concurrent use: account for older Wi-Fi devices and the demands of several household members using the connection at the same time.
  6. Compare real options on the same criteria: Wi-Fi generation and device compatibility, Gigabit WAN/LAN, coverage and expansion options, provider setup and household suitability.

A simple way to compare shortlisted routers

Use the same questions for each option instead of ranking devices by one headline number. First, does it meet the Wi-Fi 6-or-newer baseline, and are the devices you use capable of benefiting from it? Second, are both WAN and LAN ports Gigabit Ethernet? Third, will a single unit suit the home, or does the option support the mesh or wired access-point approach you may need? Finally, has your ISP confirmed that it is compatible with your connection and any required setup? These checks keep the comparison focused on the parts that matter to the household rather than on an aggregate Wi-Fi rate that does not predict one client’s result.

There is no single model recommendation that can be made from the plan tier alone. The provider, NBN technology, floorplan, budget and device mix all affect suitability. A category-level shortlist—a Wi-Fi 6 or newer router with Gigabit Ethernet ports—gives you a useful starting point, but confirm the exact product and service settings with the retail provider before purchase.

How to diagnose speeds below expectations

Compare a wired test with Wi-Fi near the router, then check Wi-Fi in the rooms where service is poor. This helps separate a broad service or equipment issue from a wireless coverage problem. A good result near the router and a weaker result farther away points toward conditions in the home—such as placement, walls or distance—rather than showing by itself that the NBN plan is slow.

  1. Test a wired device if possible. Use a device and cable that support the intended speed, and connect through a Gigabit LAN port. A slower port or cable may limit the result.
  2. Test Wi-Fi close to the router. Use the same device and test method where practical, so the comparison is useful.
  3. Test the rooms with problems. If performance drops substantially away from the router, review placement and coverage before deciding whether mesh or a wired access point is needed.
  4. Ask the ISP about a low wired result. If wired speeds are also below what you expect from the service, contact the retail provider to check the plan, connection and service-specific requirements.

Test results can vary with device capability, concurrent household use, busy-period conditions and other factors. A Wi-Fi result alone does not prove the provider’s service is underperforming; compare the pattern across wired, nearby and distant tests and discuss low wired results with the ISP.

The sensible choice for most NBN 500 shoppers

Start with a provider-compatible Wi-Fi 6 or newer router with Gigabit Ethernet WAN and LAN ports. Choose a single unit if it covers the home reliably; consider mesh or a wired access point only when the layout leaves weak-coverage areas. Treat 500 Mbps as the plan’s nominal download tier, not a guaranteed Wi-Fi result for every device, and check the provider’s requirements before committing to a specific model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my router support 500 Mbps on an NBN 500 plan?

It may, but the plan tier alone cannot confirm that. Check for Gigabit Ethernet on both the WAN and LAN ports, and confirm with your ISP that the router is compatible with your NBN connection and provider settings. The device, cable, Wi-Fi conditions, coverage and concurrent household use can also affect the result.

Do I need Wi-Fi 6 for NBN 500?

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) or newer is a sensible baseline for a new router. NBN’s guide lists typical maximums of up to 1 Gbps for Wi-Fi 6 and up to 500 Mbps for Wi-Fi 5, but those are guide figures, not guaranteed real-world speeds for an individual device. Older devices can connect to a newer router but may not use all its capabilities.

Do I need mesh Wi-Fi for an NBN 500 plan?

Not necessarily. Mesh is worth considering if a single router does not cover the rooms you use, particularly in a larger or multi-storey home. If one well-placed router provides reliable coverage, mesh is not required just because the plan is 500 Mbps. A wired access point or direct Ethernet may be another option where cabling is available.

What do WAN and LAN mean on a router?

The WAN port connects the router toward the NBN connection equipment. LAN ports connect wired devices to the router. For an NBN plan between 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps, NBN specifies Gigabit Ethernet WAN and LAN ports. A wired connection can still be limited by a slower cable or device port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an older phone or laptop use a new Wi-Fi 6 router?

Older Wi-Fi devices can connect to a newer router, but the device’s own Wi-Fi capability can limit the speed and features it uses. A router upgrade does not upgrade the Wi-Fi radio inside a phone, laptop, television or other client device.

Why is Wi-Fi slower in one room than next to the router?

Distance, walls, building materials, router placement, appliances and other interference can affect the signal. Put the router centrally, raised and in an open position, then compare service near the router with the rooms where performance is poor. If a coverage gap remains, consider mesh or a wired access point.

What should I do if my speed is below expectations?

If possible, compare a wired test through a Gigabit LAN port with Wi-Fi near the router and Wi-Fi in distant rooms. Use a cable and device that support the intended speed. A weak result only in distant rooms suggests a coverage issue; if wired speeds are also below expectations, contact your retail provider to check the plan, connection and service requirements.

Can one device get the full 500 Mbps while everyone else is online?

The plan’s nominal download tier is not a promise that each device can use the full tier at once. Several active users and devices share the connection, and device capability and conditions also matter. NBN cites a global average of around 25 connected devices in fixed-broadband households, based on OMDIA’s 2023 analysis; that figure is not specific to Australian households and connected devices are not necessarily all active at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For an NBN 500 plan, shortlist a provider-compatible Wi-Fi 6 or newer router with Gigabit Ethernet WAN and LAN ports. Choose mesh or a wired access point only if your home’s layout leaves coverage gaps. Neither a Wi-Fi generation label nor a plan tier guarantees 500 Mbps on every device, so check provider requirements and assess the whole connection.
