Choose a router whose WAN and LAN ports can handle your internet plan, then decide between one router and a mesh system based on your home’s layout and where coverage is weak. For a large or multistory home, mesh placement and Ethernet backhaul can matter more than a router’s headline Wi-Fi speed. Treat coverage figures and combined radio rates as estimates or specifications—not promises of the internet speed a device will get.
Start with the wired connection, not the Wi-Fi number
Your internet plan reaches the router through a wired connection, so check the entire path: the modem or ONT, the router’s WAN port, and any LAN ports used by wired devices. If one link is slower than the service or device you want to support, it can become the bottleneck.

For example, Google lists two Ethernet ports supporting 1 Gbps wired speeds on each Nest Wifi Pro router. That is a relevant ceiling for a plan or wired device requiring more than 1 Gbps, regardless of the router’s combined wireless-rate figure. Check the exact model’s port speeds before buying, especially for multi-gigabit service. Google’s Nest Wifi Pro specifications describe the device’s ports and wireless capabilities.

- For wired devices and mesh nodes: Check the speed and number of LAN ports. A multi-gigabit switch can add ports when the router and topology support it.
- For the service handoff: Make sure the modem or optical network terminal (ONT) and its connection to the router can also handle the plan.
Decide whether one router can cover the home
Square footage alone does not determine whether one router is enough. Floors, walls, building materials, the home’s shape, router placement, and nearby network congestion all affect coverage. A centrally located router may work well in a compact layout, while a long or multistory home may need multiple access points.

Google’s US coverage guidance estimates that Nest Wifi Pro can cover up to 200 square metres with one router, 400 with two, 600 with three, and 800 with four. These are estimates, not guarantees: Google says results vary with home size, construction, and neighbourhood congestion. Use them as a starting point for planning, not as a promise that every room will receive a strong signal. Google’s coverage guidance explains the estimates and their conditions.
Place the main router in an open, central position where practical. Google advises: “For the strongest signal, place your router at eye level in plain view, like on a shelf or TV stand.” Avoid hiding it in a cabinet or placing it at the far end of the home if you need coverage throughout the building. Google’s setup guidance includes this placement advice.

For mesh, plan node positions and backhaul
A mesh system uses multiple units to extend coverage. Its performance depends not just on how many units you buy, but also on where they sit and how they connect to one another. Follow the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance; Google recommends placing points roughly two to three rooms apart and putting an additional point partway toward a weak area, rather than directly in the dead zone.
If Ethernet runs are available, check whether the chosen system supports wired backhaul—the Ethernet connection between mesh units. A wired link can avoid relying on the wireless connection between nodes, but support depends on the exact model and topology. Google documents Ethernet connections for compatible Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi, and Google Wifi devices; older Nest Wifi points have no Ethernet ports and cannot be hardwired. Check the port layout before assuming every mesh unit can use Ethernet. Google’s Ethernet setup instructions cover compatible connections and the use of a switch to add ports.

Choose Wi-Fi features your devices can use
Wi-Fi 6E adds access to the 6 GHz band, but a device needs Wi-Fi 6E support to connect directly to that band. Nest Wifi Pro is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E system using 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz. If your phones, laptops, and other important clients do not support 6E, they cannot use its 6 GHz connection directly.
Wi-Fi 7 adds features such as Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 320 MHz channel bandwidth. TP-Link’s US HB610 product page lists those features and notes that clients must support corresponding features to use them. Check the exact router and client specifications rather than assuming that a Wi-Fi 7 label makes every device faster. Regional availability and specifications can also differ; confirm the version sold in your country. TP-Link’s HB610 page lists its stated Wi-Fi 7 features, 2.5-GbE ports, and backhaul options.

Read speed and device-count claims carefully
A combined radio rate adds theoretical capacity across bands; it is not the speed of a single device’s internet connection. Google lists Nest Wifi Pro at up to 5.4 Gbps combined across bands in the US and 4.2 Gbps outside the US. The manufacturer says these totals derive from IEEE specifications and depend on supported client capabilities, including Wi-Fi 6 or later clients supporting 160 MHz channels. Actual performance also depends on the ISP, devices, network conditions, local regulations, and environment. Google’s specifications describe those qualifications.
Field trials can illustrate what newer technology may achieve under particular conditions, but they are not household guarantees. In a 2025 residential Wi-Fi 7 trial involving CableLabs and Intel, the Wireless Broadband Alliance reported up to 3.5 Gbps TCP throughput in a 4,500-square-foot, two-story home, up to 3.7 Gbps downlink at close proximity with a 320 MHz channel, and more than 2 Gbps at typical residential distances on the access point’s floor. Those trial results do not predict performance from arbitrary equipment or in another home. The Alliance’s Phase 1 report describes the trial context.

- WiFi 6E Tri-Band Mesh WiFi – Cover up to 7,200 Sq.Ft with next-gen seamless WiFi and make dead zones and buffering a thing of the past¹ ²
- Brand-New 6 GHz Band – Experience the latest frequency of WiFi, eliminating interference from all legacy devices. The 6 GHz band can work as a backhaul to ensure stable connections between nodes by default. You can switch it to Wi-Fi Network mode and connect your WiFi 6E-compatible devices to 6GHz Network³
- True Tri-Band Speed – All three WiFi bands work together to unleash your network’s total speeds up to 5,400 Mbps for 200 devices(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);5 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)¹ ³

- Unlock the Full Potential of WiFi 6 - Opening the 6 GHz band will change the game for WiFi 6. WiFi 6 brings about upgraded performance in network efficiency and capacity. Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential
A 2026 Phase 2 report from the Wireless Broadband Alliance found up to doubled aggregated throughput under heavy 6 GHz co-channel interference and a 35–48% reduction in application-layer latency in its trial environment. Those findings concern the reported tests; they should not be generalized to every Wi-Fi 7 product or home. The Phase 2 report gives the trial context.
Likewise, Google’s figure of 100 connected devices per Nest Wifi Pro router is qualified: it assumes each device uses a maximum data rate of 1 Mbps and that broadband and Wi-Fi coverage are sufficient. It is not a promise of high throughput when 100 devices are actively demanding data. Google’s specifications state the conditions.
Compare systems against your actual home and plan
Use this checklist to narrow the choice without relying on a single coverage or speed headline:
- Plan speed: Match the modem or ONT, router WAN port, and relevant LAN ports to your service and wired-device needs.
- Layout: Consider floors, distance, walls, and where coverage is weak; do not choose node count from square footage alone.
- Backhaul: Check whether the exact mesh units support Ethernet between nodes and whether your home has suitable wiring.
- Client devices: Identify whether your important devices support Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 features you intend to use.
- Country and compatibility: Confirm local product specifications and whether additional units can join the same mesh generation.
As examples of trade-offs, Nest Wifi Pro offers Wi-Fi 6E but has 1-Gbps Ethernet ports and cannot be combined in one mesh with older Nest Wifi or Google Wifi devices. TP-Link’s US HB610 page describes a Wi-Fi 7 mesh system with 2.5-GbE ports and Ethernet and wireless backhaul; confirm the current regional model and specifications before purchase. Neither example is automatically the right choice without knowing the plan, home, devices, wiring, and budget.
