Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallChoose a Wi-Fi 7 router by matching its features to your internet plan, the devices you actually use, your home’s layout and your wired connections—not by its combined peak-rate label. Check whether your clients support Wi-Fi 7, 6 GHz and MLO; make sure the router’s WAN and LAN ports suit your needs; then decide whether one access point can cover your home or you need mesh.
What to check before comparing routers
- Confirm your internet speed and equipment. Check the speed your provider delivers and how your modem or gateway connects to the router. A faster router cannot raise the speed of a slower internet plan.
- List your important devices. Include phones, laptops, consoles, streaming devices and any Wi-Fi adapters. Check each device’s specifications for Wi-Fi 7, 6 GHz and MLO support.
- Map your wired connections. Note whether you connect a desktop, NAS or switch, and check the speed of their Ethernet ports. Compare those needs with the router’s WAN and LAN ports.
- Assess coverage where you use the network. Consider room layout, walls and other obstacles, and whether a centrally placed access point can reach the rooms that matter.
- Check security and model support. Confirm the security options your devices need and review the manufacturer’s firmware update and support policy for the exact model.
Will my old phones and laptops work with a Wi-Fi 7 router?
Generally, older devices can connect to a Wi-Fi 7 router using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, but they do not gain Wi-Fi 7 features or 6 GHz access just by connecting to the new router. TP-Link notes that Wi-Fi 7 capability depends on the client hardware and that 6 GHz requires a 6 GHz-capable client. Check the TP-Link Wi-Fi 7 Router and Deco FAQs and each device maker’s specifications before treating an upgrade as a speed improvement for your existing devices.

Does every Wi-Fi 7 router offer 6 GHz?
No. Wi-Fi 7 is based on IEEE 802.11be, but the standard’s capabilities do not guarantee that every router implements every band or feature. Verify the exact model’s supported bands and your region’s available spectrum. The Wireless Broadband Alliance describes Wi-Fi 7 channel widths up to 320 MHz, compared with up to 160 MHz for Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6; 320 MHz is a 6 GHz capability, and the number of usable channels depends on local spectrum availability. See the Wireless Broadband Alliance’s Wi-Fi 7 report announcement and Cisco Meraki’s Wi-Fi 7 technical guide.
The available 6 GHz spectrum varies by country. HPE’s 2026 buyer guide describes 1,200 MHz in some regions and 500 MHz in some countries; those figures are not universal guarantees of what a router can use in your location. Check the model specification and local regulatory availability rather than assuming a particular channel width.

What do MLO and 4K-QAM mean in practice?
Multi-Link Operation (MLO)
MLO lets compatible access points and clients exchange traffic over multiple links. Depending on implementation, links can be aggregated, steered between, or used for redundancy. The Wireless Broadband Alliance describes throughput and latency-sensitive use cases, while TP-Link cautions that the result depends on the client’s MLO type. Treat MLO as a feature to verify on both router and client, not as a guaranteed speed increase for every device.
4096-QAM (4K-QAM)
4K-QAM can carry more data per symbol, but Cisco Meraki notes that it needs a very high signal-to-noise ratio—close to 42 dB for high data rates—and works best within a few feet of the access point. It is therefore not a sound basis for predicting whole-home performance. Signal quality and distance matter.

Should I get a Wi-Fi 7 router or a mesh system?
Choose one router when a well-placed access point reaches the rooms you use
Try a central, elevated location with fewer walls and obstacles between the router and your devices. Microsoft Support recommends placement that improves signal and checking strength in problem areas. Repositioning an existing access point may solve a weak spot without adding hardware. Its Wi-Fi and home layout guidance also covers practical layout considerations.

Consider mesh when weak areas persist
A mesh system can help when the layout, distance or obstacles leave rooms with poor coverage and one access point is not enough. There is no universal floor-area threshold that determines when mesh is necessary; assess the actual signal in the rooms that matter. If comparing kits, check whether you can add nodes, whether older nodes remain compatible and whether key features require compatible firmware. TP-Link says its Deco products are designed to work together, but MLO networking is available only with Wi-Fi 7 Deco units and compatible firmware.

What router do I need for multi-gigabit internet?
Multi-gigabit performance requires the whole wired path to support it: an internet plan that delivers the speed, a router WAN port that can accept it, LAN ports and client Ethernet interfaces that can carry it, successful link negotiation, and suitable cabling. A single fast port does not make slower equipment faster. TP-Link recommends CAT6 or above for over-gigabit connections and advises checking the client adapter, provider-delivered speed and negotiated physical link speed. Match the WAN port to the service and the LAN ports to wired devices such as a desktop, NAS or switch.
How should I compare candidate routers?
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Bands | Which bands the exact model supports, especially whether it includes 6 GHz. |
| Client compatibility | Whether the devices you care about support Wi-Fi 7, 6 GHz and MLO; MLO behavior depends on client support and implementation. |
| Wired ports | Whether WAN and LAN port speeds fit your internet service and wired clients. |
| Coverage | Whether one well-placed access point covers the rooms you use or persistent weak areas call for mesh. |
| Security and updates | Whether the router offers suitable security options and what firmware support the manufacturer provides for that model. |
| Total setup cost | The router price plus any mesh nodes you need; compare current model and regional pricing directly. |
Do not treat a combined marketing rate as the speed one device will achieve. Real results depend on the client, band, signal, configuration and internet connection. The sources cited here do not establish a controlled, apples-to-apples performance comparison among specific router models, so choose and compare exact candidates using their specifications and independent tests rather than assuming a single model is best for every home.

Security and ownership details to check
Microsoft Support identifies WPA3 as the current standard in its guidance and advises avoiding older security types such as WEP. Confirm that a router supports suitable security for the devices you need to keep connected. Review the firmware-update policy for the exact model as well: manufacturers do not share a common support lifetime, so one brand’s policy should not be assumed for another.
