For most first websites, start with either a reputable shared plan or a managed WordPress plan. Choose shared hosting when low cost, flexibility and hands-on control matter most. Choose managed WordPress hosting when you want simpler installation, updates, backups and support. Buy only the capacity and management you need now, but confirm that the plan has a clear upgrade path.
Before paying, separate three decisions that are often bundled together: your website platform, your domain name and your hosting service. Then compare the exact billing term, renewal price, technical compatibility, backup and restore process, security controls, support and resource limits. No source establishes one universally best provider, speed guarantee, uptime figure or traffic threshold, so plan-level terms matter more than a category label.

What web hosting does—and what a domain does
Web hosting is the service that stores your website’s files, database and other content on an internet-connected server and delivers them when someone visits. A domain is the human-readable address visitors type, such as example.com. The domain points people toward the hosting account, but registering a domain does not automatically provide storage for a website. Learn WordPress describes domains and hosting as related but separate parts of getting a site online (Domains and hosting).
You can buy both services from one company or keep them separate. Keeping them separate can make it easier to move hosting later, while one account may be simpler for a first-time owner. Either way, check who controls the domain, where its renewal price is shown and how to change its DNS settings. A domain renewal is a recurring charge distinct from the hosting bill.

What happens after a visitor enters your address
- The visitor’s browser asks the domain’s DNS records where the site is hosted.
- The hosting server receives the request and retrieves the relevant files or generates a page from the site’s database.
- The server sends the page, images, scripts and styles back to the browser over HTTPS.
That process is why a plan must support your chosen software, provide HTTPS and offer enough storage and server resources for the site’s actual workload.
Choose the platform before choosing the plan
WordPress and other applications
First decide whether you will use WordPress, another content-management system, an online store application or a site builder. A WordPress site does not require a product labelled “WordPress hosting.” Generic hosting is suitable when it meets WordPress’s current server requirements. WordPress.org explains that WordPress-specific services are distinguished by setup and management features—such as preinstallation, updates, backups or development tools—not merely by their name (Hosting WordPress).

When a WordPress-specific plan helps
A WordPress-focused plan can save time if it includes one-click installation, automatic core updates, staging, migration assistance, malware monitoring or WordPress-aware support. Confirm each item in the plan’s terms; a provider’s category or directory description does not prove that every tier includes every feature.
When generic hosting is enough
Choose compatible generic hosting if you are comfortable installing software, arranging updates and managing backups yourself, or if you expect to run several applications from one account. The lower price or broader application support can be useful, but you take responsibility for more of the operating work.
Understand the main hosting choices without assuming a universal ladder
“Shared,” “managed WordPress,” “VPS,” “cloud” and “dedicated” describe different combinations of infrastructure, isolation and management. They are not a guaranteed progression that every beginner must follow. Managed WordPress describes the service work a provider performs and can run on different underlying infrastructure.
Shared hosting
Shared hosting places multiple customer sites on a server. It is usually the practical starting point for a modest personal site, portfolio, local-business site or early blog because the provider handles the server and the entry commitment is often lower. In exchange, you share server resources and normally have less control over system configuration. “Unlimited” storage, visitors or sites should never be treated as unlimited in practice; read the acceptable-use and resource clauses.

Managed WordPress plans concentrate on one application and may include installation, automatic updates, scheduled backups, staging and WordPress-trained support. They can reduce routine maintenance, but they may restrict plugins, themes, server settings or other applications. Ask exactly what is managed, whether updates can be deferred, how restores work and whether staging is included in your tier.

VPS, cloud and dedicated infrastructure
These categories can provide more control, isolation or scaling options, but the available sources do not establish universal definitions, prices or traffic breakpoints for them. Do not buy one by default because a salesperson mentions future growth. Consider such infrastructure only when you have a concrete requirement—such as a software stack that needs administrator access, a measured resource constraint, compliance isolation or a workload that your current plan cannot handle—and verify the provider’s current specifications.
A six-step decision process
1. Describe the first site
Write down the site’s purpose, platform, expected content and any special functions before comparing plans. A five-page brochure site, a photo-heavy portfolio, a membership system and an online store can have different storage, database and support needs. Note whether you need email accounts, multiple domains, scheduled jobs, staging or a development environment.
2. Set your maintenance preference
Decide which tasks you want to perform. If you prefer to handle software updates, plugin compatibility, backups and troubleshooting, compatible generic hosting may be sufficient. If you want the provider to perform more of that work, investigate managed WordPress services. Do not infer the management level from the word “managed”; list the specific tasks included and excluded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Verify technical compatibility
For WordPress, WordPress.org’s requirements page, accessed in October 2026, recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, HTTPS, and a web server such as Nginx or Apache with mod_rewrite (WordPress requirements). Ask the host to confirm these versions for the exact plan, not merely for the company’s newest server.
Older PHP 7.4 and MySQL 5.5.5 combinations may still run WordPress in legacy environments, but those versions are end-of-life and can expose a site to security vulnerabilities. Treat current supported versions as a buying requirement rather than planning around legacy compatibility.
4. Compare the complete financial commitment
Record the initial charge, billing term, renewal price, cancellation and refund rules, domain registration or renewal cost, taxes and optional add-ons. A monthly equivalent shown for a multi-year prepayment is not comparable with a true month-to-month price. Introductory prices can change at renewal; WordPress.com’s comparison guidance also warns readers to check this distinction (WordPress.com versus WordPress.org).
5. Check recovery, security and support
Find the backup schedule, retention period, restore procedure, restore fee and whether backups are stored separately from the live account. Verify HTTPS certificate coverage, account isolation, malware response, two-factor authentication and available support channels. Ask whether support is available by ticket, chat or phone, during which hours and with what WordPress expertise. Directory listings and marketing descriptions are not guarantees for every plan.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
6. Confirm the upgrade path
Choose a plan that is adequate for the first site and can be upgraded without rebuilding it. Check what changes when you move tiers: price, storage, CPU or memory limits, database limits, backup retention, staging, support response and migration work. No reliable source establishes a universal visitor number at which an upgrade is required, so use your plan’s resource graphs and real symptoms rather than a generic threshold.
Technical requirements checklist for WordPress
| Requirement or feature | What to verify before purchase | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| PHP | PHP 8.3 or greater on the selected plan | Current WordPress compatibility and security support |
| Database | MariaDB 10.11 or greater, or MySQL 8.0 or greater | WordPress data storage and supported software versions |
| Web server | Nginx or Apache with mod_rewrite support |
Permalinks and normal WordPress request handling |
| HTTPS | An SSL/TLS certificate covering the domain and renewal method | Encrypted connections and modern browser compatibility |
| Installation | Automatic installer or a documented manual process | Shorter, less error-prone setup for a beginner |
| Updates | Which WordPress, plugin and theme updates are automatic, optional or your responsibility | Updates can improve security but can also create compatibility issues |
| Backups | Frequency, retention, storage location and restore steps | A backup is useful only if you can recover the site |
| Resources | Storage, databases, files, memory, CPU policies and inode limits | Prevents surprises hidden behind broad “unlimited” wording |
You can send a prospective host the exact question published by WordPress.org: “I’m interested in running the open source WordPress https://wordpress.org/ web software, and I was wondering if my account supported the following:” Then list the PHP, database, web-server and HTTPS requirements above.
Compare plans on the terms that affect ownership
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Price and commitment | What is charged today? What is the renewal rate? Which billing term is required? What are cancellation, refund, tax and domain-renewal charges? |
| WordPress compatibility | Are the recommended PHP and database versions available now, and can you change versions later? |
| Setup and maintenance | Is installation automatic? Are core, plugin and theme updates managed? Is staging or a developer tool included? |
| Recovery and security | How often are backups made? How long are they retained? Can you restore without support, and is there a fee? Is HTTPS included? How are accounts isolated? |
| Support | Which channels and hours apply to this tier? Does support troubleshoot WordPress or only the server? |
| Capacity and growth | What are the storage and resource limits? What does “unlimited” exclude? What is the next tier and its price? Is migration included? |
WordPress.org notes that hosting is more secure when PHP applications such as WordPress run under your account username instead of the server’s default shared username (requirements and security note). Ask how the plan isolates accounts and runs PHP; do not assume all shared environments use the same configuration.
Maintenance: decide who is responsible for what
Make a responsibility list before checkout. On self-managed hosting, you may need to update WordPress, plugins and themes, test compatibility, monitor logs, configure backups, apply restores, harden administrator accounts and investigate malware. On a managed plan, some of those tasks may be automated or performed by the provider, but the scope varies.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Updates
Ask whether automatic updates cover WordPress core only or also plugins and themes. Confirm whether you receive a notice, whether updates can be paused and whether the host offers staging so you can test changes first.
Backups and restoration
Ask how many restore points exist, whether backups are daily or more frequent, where they are stored and whether a full account restore is possible. Test the restore instructions with a noncritical copy if the service allows it. A backup that cannot be downloaded or restored independently is a weaker safety net.
Security
Use HTTPS, a unique administrator password, two-factor authentication where available and least-privilege user accounts. Confirm how the provider handles server patching, suspicious files and compromised accounts. Security support does not remove your obligation to update vulnerable plugins or protect your credentials.

Pricing: read the renewal line, not just the headline
Hosting offers are provider- and term-dependent, so there is no stable universal monthly price to use as a benchmark. A low displayed monthly figure may require a long prepayment and may renew at a higher rate. Compare the total amount due for the initial term with the total expected at renewal. Include the domain’s recurring fee and any paid backup, migration, email, staging or security add-ons.
Save a copy of the checkout summary and terms showing the plan name, renewal amount, included domains, refund window and cancellation method. If a discount applies only to the first term, record the date on which the regular price begins. Recheck the live terms immediately before purchase because offers and inclusions change.
Set up the site after buying hosting
- Register or connect the domain. If the domain is elsewhere, copy the host’s nameservers or DNS records exactly and keep access to the registrar account.
- Enable HTTPS. Confirm that the certificate covers the primary domain and any
wwwversion, then set the site to use HTTPS. - Install WordPress. Use the host’s documented installer or the manual process in WordPress.org’s installation guidance. WordPress.org’s beginner materials treat hosting and the domain as early setup decisions (Installation FAQ).
- Create administrator accounts carefully. Use a strong unique password, enable two-factor authentication if offered and avoid using an easily guessed username.
- Configure backups and updates. Set the schedule, retention and notification preferences, then locate the restore control before publishing content.
- Test the public site. Open pages on a phone and desktop, test contact forms, confirm redirects from HTTP to HTTPS, check that images load and verify that the domain resolves from more than one network.
The Learn WordPress “Getting Started, Get Set Up” course provides a beginner-oriented sequence for connecting a domain, hosting and WordPress (Get Set Up).
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying on the lowest introductory price alone
A cheap first term can become expensive at renewal or require a long commitment. Compare the complete first-term and renewal totals, including the domain and optional services.
Assuming a WordPress label means everything is managed
One plan may automate core updates while leaving plugins, themes, backups and security to you. Read the feature list and responsibility terms for the exact tier.
Choosing infrastructure for hypothetical traffic
There is no universal visitor threshold supported by the available sources. Start with an adequate plan, monitor resource use and upgrade when measured constraints or a concrete technical requirement appears.
Ignoring restoration details
“Daily backups” does not tell you retention, storage location or restore cost. Obtain those details and learn the actual recovery procedure before a failure occurs.
Best Value
Treating “unlimited” as unlimited
Storage and traffic descriptions may still be subject to fair-use rules, CPU limits, file-count limits or restrictions on particular workloads. Ask for the numerical or policy limits that apply to your plan.
Forgetting the domain renewal
The domain can expire even when hosting remains active. Confirm its renewal date, price and billing owner, and enable renewal reminders or automatic renewal only after checking the account’s payment security.
When should you upgrade?
Upgrade when the current plan’s documented limits or observed behavior prevent the site from operating reliably, not simply because a larger product sounds more professional. Useful signals include repeated resource-limit notices, database or file-count limits, inability to run a required application, a needed server setting that the plan cannot provide, or a support and backup level that no longer matches the site’s risk.
Before moving, ask whether the provider can migrate the site, whether the IP address or DNS records will change, how long the transition takes and whether the old account remains available during testing. Keep a verified backup and lower DNS time-to-live before a planned move so you can recover if the new environment is misconfigured.
How to find a good host for a WordPress website
WordPress.org’s beginner FAQ uses that exact question and points readers toward hosts that support the software and make installation practical (WordPress installation FAQ). Its hosting directory explains that listing criteria include contributions to WordPress.org, customer base, ease of auto-install and auto-upgrades, GPL compliance, design and tone, and current software. Some listed providers disclose that they donate a portion of a referred fee to WordPress.org (WordPress hosting directory). These are directory and listing facts, not independent rankings of speed, uptime, support quality or value, and they do not prove that every plan includes every feature described.
Use the directory or a provider’s documentation as a starting point, then verify the exact plan’s versions, billing, backups, restore process, support and limits. Your location, audience, platform and maintenance preference determine whether a particular offer is suitable.
