What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose the tool by the artifact you need to recover later. Use Obsidian Web Clipper when your priority is an editable, searchable note with highlights and metadata inside your vault. Use SingleFile when you need one portable HTML file that preserves a page’s rendered structure. Use ArchiveBox when you are building a separate, self-hosted collection with several output formats, repeatable imports, or automation. A clipped Markdown note, a self-contained page copy, and a multi-format archive are different deliverables; selecting the right one prevents painful re-capture later.
Start with the recovery question
Before installing anything, decide what “saved” must mean for your project. Researchers usually need one of three artifacts:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A thinking surface: clean text, highlights, source details, and links that can be edited, tagged, searched, and connected to other notes.
- A faithful page copy: a self-contained file that opens in a browser with the page’s layout and embedded resources intact.
- A preservation record: multiple representations of a URL—HTML, screenshots, PDF, extracted text, metadata, or WARC—kept in a collection that can be revisited and backed up.
Those goals overlap, but no single capture is automatically best at all three. Obsidian Web Clipper is designed around the first. SingleFile is designed around the second. ArchiveBox addresses the third. Your choice should follow the artifact, not a generic ranking.
Tool comparison at a glance
| Approach | Best fit | What it saves and how it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Obsidian Web Clipper | Research notes that belong in the vault | Captures main article content, selected text or highlights, page metadata, and template-defined fields as local vault content. | Images are not downloaded automatically, and a Markdown clip is not a complete rendered-page snapshot. |
| SingleFile | Occasional pages where a portable visual copy matters | Saves a complete webpage as one HTML file through a browser extension. | The reviewed project documentation does not establish native Obsidian integration; you organize the HTML file and link to it from a vault note. |
| ArchiveBox | Growing collections, varied page types, and automation | A self-hosted application with browser extension, command-line, web, and API entry points; it can produce HTML, SingleFile HTML, screenshots, PDFs, PNG, JSON, WARC, article text, and other extracted content. | You must operate, secure, store, and back up a separate archiving service, and its many formats do not guarantee perfect capture of every site. |
The capabilities in this table are described in the projects’ own documentation: Obsidian’s capture guide, the SingleFile project, and the ArchiveBox project.

When Obsidian Web Clipper is the right choice
Obsidian describes Web Clipper as “a free browser extension that lets you highlight pages and save web content to your vault.” That wording captures its strength: it turns a web reading session into a note you can revise and connect, rather than treating the page as an isolated download. The extension can capture the main article content by default, accept a selection or highlights, retain available metadata, and apply templates that shape the saved note. See Obsidian’s Web Clipper help and the capture documentation.
What the saved note is good at
- Synthesis: You can annotate, rewrite, split, and link the captured Markdown as you develop an argument.
- Consistent metadata: A template can reserve fields for the source URL, title, author or date when available, tags, and your own research status.
- Selective evidence: Highlight only the passages that matter instead of carrying every navigation element, comment, or advertisement into the vault.
- Local discovery: The result becomes ordinary vault content, so it can participate in your existing search, links, and note structure.
Where a clip stops short of an archive
Obsidian’s documentation warns that images are not automatically downloaded by Web Clipper. They remain links to the remote image URL unless you download the attachments separately. If the website removes an image, changes its address, requires access, or is unavailable offline, the image may not display in your note. A clipped article also does not preserve every visual element of the rendered page. Treat it as a research note, not as proof that you have an offline copy of the source.
A repeatable Web Clipper workflow
- Install the extension for your browser and connect it to the vault you use for research. Confirm that a test capture creates a local note before processing important sources.
- Create a capture template. Include a source URL, page title, author and publication date when available, capture date, and a field for your own research question or summary. Keep the template small enough that it does not bury the excerpt you are trying to evaluate.
- Open the page and select the evidence. Capture the main article when you need broad context; use a selection or highlights when only a passage, table, or definition belongs in the note.
- Apply the template and save to a predictable folder. Use a stable naming convention, such as a short title plus date, so a later snapshot can be linked without replacing the thinking note.
- Check the resulting note immediately. Verify the URL, title, author/date fields, headings, code, tables, and any highlighted text. Look for missing images or embedded media.
- Download required attachments separately. If an image, chart, or PDF is evidence rather than decoration, save it locally and link it from the note instead of assuming the web URL will remain available.
Use this path when the note itself is the unit you will read and edit. Do not promise yourself that the Markdown file can recreate the original page later; it cannot if important resources were never downloaded.

SingleFile is a browser extension for saving a faithful copy of a complete webpage in one HTML file. That single-file design is useful when page appearance, local resources, and portability matter more than clean Markdown. A saved file can be moved, backed up, or opened independently of the original site, subject to the page’s scripts and the extension’s ability to process that particular site.
Use cases that favor one-file HTML
- A long-form article whose layout, captions, footnotes, or visual hierarchy are part of the evidence.
- A page you may need to show later exactly as it appeared, rather than a cleaned extraction.
- A one-off capture where running a separate archive service would add more overhead than value.
- A source with complex formatting that becomes confusing when reduced to Markdown.
Bring the HTML into an Obsidian project without confusing roles
The reviewed SingleFile documentation does not establish a native Obsidian integration. You can still use both tools cleanly:

- Save the page with SingleFile into a dedicated folder inside or beside the vault.
- Create a short Markdown note containing the title, source URL, capture date, and why the page matters.
- Link from that note to the saved
.htmlfile using a relative link that remains valid after you back up the vault. - Keep your analysis, quotations, and backlinks in Markdown while treating the HTML file as the evidence copy.
- Open a representative saved page in the browser you normally use and confirm that text, images, styles, and interactive portions behave as expected.
This split avoids a common mistake: asking a single HTML file to serve as both an editable research note and a durable citation record. HTML is excellent for preserving presentation; Markdown is easier to revise and connect.
When ArchiveBox justifies the extra setup
ArchiveBox is intended for a separate, self-hosted archive rather than a single note-taking action. Its project documentation describes browser-extension, command-line, web-interface, and API workflows, along with outputs such as original HTML, SingleFile HTML, screenshots, PDFs, PNG, JSON, WARC, article text, and other extracted content. That breadth is valuable when a collection must survive changes to the source site or when you want more than one representation of each URL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose ArchiveBox for collection problems
- Volume: You are collecting many URLs over time and want a central index rather than scattered browser downloads.
- Redundancy: A screenshot, PDF, extracted text, and raw HTML answer different recovery needs if one format fails.
- Automation: You want repeatable imports from a feed, list, browser workflow, command line, or API.
- Mixed page types: Your sources include ordinary articles, documents, images, and pages where a single extraction method is unreliable.
Plan the operating burden first
Self-hosting changes the question from “Which extension should I click?” to “How will this service be maintained?” Decide where the archive files live, how they are backed up, who can access them, and how you will recover if the host or storage fails. Updates, permissions, disk use, and monitoring are part of the tool choice even when the software itself is available without a purchase price.
ArchiveBox’s list of formats is a set of project capabilities, not a guarantee that every website will render or replay perfectly. Test the page types that matter to you before making the service your only copy. Keep the original URL and capture date in your Obsidian note so the archive remains understandable if you later change tools.
A practical decision path
Choose Web Clipper when the vault is the destination
Select it if your next action after reading is to annotate, link, tag, compare, or synthesize the material in Obsidian. Build the template first, then capture only the content you expect to use. Add local attachments for images or documents that must remain available offline.

Choose SingleFile when the page itself is the evidence
Select it if losing layout, styling, captions, or the complete rendered page would weaken your record. Store the HTML file predictably and create a small Markdown index note rather than importing the entire page into your editable note.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose ArchiveBox when the collection is the project
Select it if you need a growing, searchable archive with several representations, recurring imports, or access through more than one interface. Budget time for deployment, updates, storage, backups, and access controls.
Use two layers when you need both thought and proof
A strong workflow often captures the same source twice for different reasons: Web Clipper produces the note you will think with, while SingleFile or ArchiveBox preserves a page copy for verification. Put the source URL, capture date, and local snapshot link together in the Markdown note. This is not redundant if the artifacts have distinct jobs; it is redundant only when you create multiple copies without a recovery purpose.
Compare the tools on the five questions that matter
1. What exactly must survive?
If the answer is “my highlights and interpretation,” prioritize editable Markdown. If it is “the page’s visual arrangement,” prioritize one-file HTML. If it is “several independent ways to reconstruct the source,” prioritize a multi-format archive.
2. Will it work without the original website?
Ask whether text, images, fonts, scripts, and embedded documents are local. Web Clipper’s images remain remote unless downloaded. SingleFile is explicitly aimed at a self-contained HTML copy. ArchiveBox can create several local representations, but individual sites can still defeat particular capture methods. Test an example by disconnecting from the network or opening it on a separate machine.

3. Do you need to edit the result?
Markdown is the most convenient of these artifacts for rewriting, linking, and adding your own structure. Single-file HTML retains structure but is not a natural editing surface for research synthesis. ArchiveBox’s outputs vary: extracted text can be edited after import, while screenshots and WARC files are evidence objects rather than notes.
4. Is this a one-off or a collection?
An extension-based capture is usually the least operationally demanding for occasional sources. A self-hosted service becomes more attractive as URL count, formats, and repeatability matter, but only if you are prepared to maintain it.
5. What access and privacy constraints apply?
Archiving a page that requires login, contains a private URL, or is covered by contractual or site-specific restrictions can create a different risk from saving a public article for personal study. Check the relevant terms and your organization’s policy. Protect an archive that contains authenticated captures, and avoid exposing its index or raw files publicly by accident.

Do not infer completeness from a successful save notification. Run a short acceptance check for each workflow you depend on:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the saved artifact with the network disabled.
- Confirm that the title, body text, headings, quotations, tables, and code are present.
- Inspect images, charts, downloadable documents, and captions separately.
- Check whether video, interactive charts, comments, or scripts are merely represented by a link.
- Record the original URL and capture date even when the local copy opens correctly.
- Try the process on a page with a paywall, login, heavy JavaScript, or unusual layout if those pages are central to your work.
These checks distinguish “I have a note” from “I can recover the evidence.” They also reveal when a two-layer workflow is warranted.

Common failure modes and fixes
The note has text but missing images
This is expected behavior for Web Clipper unless you download attachments separately. Save the needed image or document locally, link it from the note, and retain the source URL. If the image is not essential to your argument, mark the omission in your own note rather than silently treating the clip as complete.
The Markdown looks clean but loses page context
Keep the clip for synthesis and add a SingleFile capture or ArchiveBox snapshot when layout, footnotes, or surrounding elements affect interpretation. A clean extraction is not a substitute for a visual record.
The HTML file opens but an interactive element does not work
Interactive behavior can depend on remote services, scripts, authentication, or a live data feed. Preserve a screenshot, PDF, or extracted text alongside the HTML when that element is evidence. ArchiveBox’s multiple output types can provide alternatives, but test them on your actual page class.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The archive grows faster than expected
Set a retention and storage policy before importing large lists. Decide which formats are mandatory, where backups live, how often they run, and who can delete or export captures. Keep the Obsidian note lightweight by linking to the archive rather than duplicating every binary output inside the vault.
A private page appears in a shared archive
Review access controls and sharing defaults immediately. Authenticated pages and private URLs can expose personal or confidential material if the archive directory, web interface, or backup is reachable by other users. Separate private collections from any archive intended for publication or team-wide access.
Organize captures so they remain useful
Use one stable record for the research meaning and one predictable location for the evidence. A practical Markdown note can contain:
- Source title and canonical URL.
- Author and publication date when available.
- Capture date and tool used.
- Your question, summary, and selected quotations.
- A relative link to a SingleFile HTML copy or an ArchiveBox record, when present.
- Notes about missing images, inaccessible media, or authentication requirements.
Keep filenames and folders consistent across projects. If a source is recaptured, add a new date or version rather than overwriting the only evidence copy. Back up the vault and the archive separately when they serve different recovery purposes.
Bottom line: match the tool to the artifact
For most Obsidian researchers, begin with Web Clipper because it puts editable notes, highlights, and metadata where the work already happens. Add SingleFile for sources whose exact page presentation matters. Move to ArchiveBox when you are managing a collection that needs multiple formats, automation, and an independently operated archive. The decisive question is not which product has the longest feature list; it is what you need to recover when the original page changes or disappears.
