An absolute pore size of 0.3 micron or smaller also removes bacteria, but not viruses. Most portable filters do not remove viruses.
Start with the source and the risk
Clear-looking stream or lake water can still contain germs. Treat uncertain water before drinking it, using it to cook, brushing your teeth, or preparing food. The right method depends on which germs you need to address, how cloudy the water is, how much you need, and whether you have heat or treatment supplies available.

These methods address biological contamination, not every kind of hazard. Water suspected of containing fuel, toxic chemicals, or radioactive material should not be treated as safe by filtering, boiling, or disinfecting; use bottled water or another source and follow local health advice.

What the filter label needs to establish
For a portable filter, look for a specific, verifiable claim on the exact model’s label or authoritative product documentation. CDC guidance says a filter with an absolute pore size of 1 micron or smaller, or NSF 53 or 58 certification for cyst reduction or removal, removes parasites. A filter with an absolute pore size of 0.3 micron or smaller removes bacteria as well as parasites. These thresholds do not mean the filter removes viruses.

Do not treat “filter” or “purifier” as a universal performance guarantee. If virus protection matters for the water source, plan to boil or disinfect after filtering, or use another treatment method documented to cover viruses. CDC describes filtering and then disinfecting as a practical option when boiling is unavailable; disinfectant effectiveness varies by organism and product, so follow the label’s dose and contact time. Some disinfectants are less effective against parasites. Chlorine dioxide has some effectiveness against Cryptosporidium, but CDC describes filtering first as the safest approach.
Choose a treatment method that fits the conditions
| Method | What it can address | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Portable filter | Parasites when the model meets the cited pore-size or cyst-certification criteria; bacteria when its absolute pore size is 0.3 micron or smaller. | Most portable filters do not remove viruses. Verify the exact model’s claim. |
| Filter, then disinfect | Filtering removes particles and relevant parasites; disinfection can address viruses and bacteria, depending on the method and organism. | Some disinfectants are less effective against parasites. Follow product directions and contact times. |
| Boiling | CDC calls boiling the best way to kill germs. | For clear water, bring it to a rolling boil for 1 minute, or 3 minutes above 6,500 feet. Let it cool safely; settle or pre-filter cloudy water first. |
| Portable UV | Can kill parasites, bacteria, and viruses in small amounts of clear water. | Cloudiness and particles can block germs from UV light, so filter cloudy water first. |
Build a hiking or camping kit around a real backup
For trail use, choose a portable water filter only after confirming its specific coverage claim. If viruses are a plausible concern, carry a suitable disinfection option as well, or plan to boil water. When using a chemical disinfectant, follow the product’s directions rather than assuming that all products work equally well against every organism.

Plan for cloudy water: particles can interfere with UV treatment, and CDC advises settling or pre-filtering cloudy water before boiling. Consider how much water you need and whether your chosen method requires fuel, heat, or consumables. The CDC guidance cited here does not compare individual models’ weight, flow rate, service life, freezing tolerance, replacement availability, or cost; check current manufacturer documentation for those details.

After a disaster, CDC advises using bottled, boiled, or treated water and following health-department recommendations. A portable filter can be one part of an emergency water plan, but it cannot make water with fuel, toxic chemicals, or radioactive materials safe. Keep an alternative source or bottled water in mind when contamination of that kind is possible.
