1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a washing machine in this order: confirm the installation space, match the drum to the loads you actually wash, then compare certified models with the yellow EnergyGuide label and ENERGY STAR metrics. Front-loaders are usually the most efficient configuration, but a top-load impeller washer is a different comparison from a top-load agitator washer.
There is no reliable rule that converts household size directly into a required cubic-foot capacity. Your laundry frequency, bedding, available space, loading preference and the exact model’s installation instructions matter more than a household-size chart.

Start with the constraints that can eliminate a washer
Measure the installation space before comparing features
Measure the opening’s width, depth and height, including trim, baseboards and any countertop overhang. Then check the exact model’s installation document rather than relying on a retailer’s rounded dimensions. Record the following before shopping:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Clear width, depth and height, including room for hoses, the power cord and ventilation where specified.
- Door or lid clearance. A front-loader needs space for the door to swing open; a top-loader needs enough overhead clearance to raise the lid fully.
- Water-supply, drain and electrical locations. A machine that fits the cabinet opening can still fail if the hookups are inaccessible or the drain arrangement is incompatible.
- Whether the washer must be stacked, placed under a counter or installed beside a dryer. ENERGY STAR identifies stackable and under-counter models as options for tighter spaces.
- Floor strength and levelness. A washer can vibrate, walk or make excessive noise if the floor is uneven or the machine is not leveled according to its instructions.
Leave the clearances specified by the manufacturer. Do not assume that a washer with the same listed width as your old machine will have the same hose routing, door swing or service access.

Describe your real laundry pattern
Write down how often you wash, the usual load sizes, whether you wash bulky bedding, and whether you prefer adding items after a cycle starts. This description is more useful than choosing by the number of people in the home. A household that washes small loads daily may need a different drum from one that runs fewer, larger loads on weekends.
Understand the three washer configurations
Front-load washers
A front-loader tumbles clothing in a horizontal drum through a door on the front. The design generally uses less water and energy than either major top-load configuration, although the exact result depends on the certified model and its settings. ENERGY STAR says certified front-load washers use about 50% less energy and water than a top-load agitator washer, and about 25% less of both than a top-load impeller washer. Those are broad comparisons from ENERGY STAR, not a guarantee that any two individual models will perform identically. See the agency’s clothes-washer guidance and product finder for model-level information.
The front door can make it easier to use a dryer or folding surface above the washer, and many models can be stacked with a matching dryer. You must, however, be comfortable bending to a lower opening and keeping the door area dry between cycles.

An agitator is a post that rises from the center of the wash basket and moves clothing through the water. It can provide a familiar loading experience and a shorter reach into the drum, but the post occupies space and can limit how bulky items sit in the basket. ENERGY STAR’s strongest efficiency comparison is between front-loaders and this configuration: certified front-loaders use about half the energy and water, on average, according to the agency’s consumer guidance.
Top-load washers with an impeller
An impeller is a low-profile disk or plate at the bottom of the basket rather than a tall central post. The open center can leave more usable room for large items, but usable capacity still depends on the basket shape, cycle limits and the manufacturer’s instructions. ENERGY STAR says front-load washers are about 25% more efficient on energy and water than certified top-load impeller washers in its broad comparison.
| Configuration | Wash action and access | Space considerations | Efficiency context from ENERGY STAR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front-load | Horizontal tumbling through a front door; requires bending and door-swing clearance | Often stackable; verify front clearance and gasket-care requirements | About 50% less energy and water than a top-load agitator; about 25% less than a top-load impeller, as broad certified-category comparisons |
| Top-load agitator | Central post moves clothing; overhead loading and no front door swing | Agitator occupies drum space; check comforter and load guidance | Reference configuration for ENERGY STAR’s front-load comparison |
| Top-load impeller | Low-profile plate moves clothing; overhead loading | Open center may provide more room for bulky pieces; verify actual limits | Front-load washers are about 25% more efficient on energy and water in ENERGY STAR’s broad comparison |
Choose capacity by laundry pattern, not a household-size formula
What the cubic-foot number tells you
Capacity is the drum’s stated volume, usually in cubic feet. It is not a promise that every type of load can be packed to that volume. A comforter, jeans, towels and delicate garments occupy space differently, and the machine may impose separate limits for particular cycles.
ENERGY STAR advises considering whether your typical loads are small or large and where the washer will be installed. Its guidance does not establish a universal rule such as “four people need a particular capacity.” Treat any such chart as a convenience, not a specification.

When a larger drum helps
A larger basket can fit bulky bedding and may let you combine loads, potentially reducing the number of cycles. That advantage disappears if your normal loads are small and you routinely run the washer partly empty. Washers use about the same amount of energy regardless of load size, according to ENERGY STAR, so filling the drum appropriately is generally better than running many small cycles.
Check the manual for the items you actually wash
Before buying, find the manufacturer’s manual or installation guide for the exact model. Confirm its stated capacity, comforter guidance, maximum load instructions, cycle-specific restrictions and whether an agitator changes the usable area. ENERGY STAR notes that removing a bulky agitator can create more room for laundry, especially large items such as comforters; that observation does not mean every impeller or front-loader can handle every comforter.
Compare efficiency with the labels and metrics that matter
Use the yellow EnergyGuide label for like-for-like comparisons
The EnergyGuide label shows estimated annual energy use and an estimated annual operating cost. Compare models of similar size and configuration, because a very large washer and a compact washer do not represent the same service. The cost is an estimate based on assumptions such as average use and an assumed energy price; your utility rates, water-heating system, cycle choices and laundry frequency can produce a different bill.
Use the label to rank similar models rather than treating its dollar figure as a guarantee. Keep the label available when comparing a store display, an online listing and the exact model number on your quote.
Understand IMEF and IWF
ENERGY STAR defines the Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) as a capacity-adjusted measure that combines washer energy, the energy used to heat water, the energy associated with removing remaining moisture and low-power-mode energy. A higher IMEF indicates greater efficiency.
The Integrated Water Factor (IWF) compares weighted water consumption per cycle with the washer’s capacity. A lower IWF indicates lower water use per cubic foot. Compare these values within similar size and configuration groups; a metric is not a substitute for checking the machine’s actual capacity and installation requirements.
The official ENERGY STAR clothes-washer criteria page lists current qualification information and model metrics. It states that the criteria displayed there were changed on April 22, 2021, so do not present the following thresholds as timeless or assume they apply to a future revision.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Put ENERGY STAR claims in context
ENERGY STAR says certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than regular washers. It also says full-sized certified washers use 14 gallons per load versus 20 gallons for a standard machine. Those figures are ENERGY STAR’s category-level consumer estimates, not a promise for every household or cycle.
The agency says models that have earned ENERGY STAR can save about $530 in energy costs over the product’s lifetime. The page does not state the assumed lifetime or the year of the estimate, so regard that figure as an illustrative estimate rather than a guaranteed saving.
Calculate the total cost instead of chasing a single number
Purchase and installation costs
Compare the washer’s purchase price with delivery, haul-away, installation parts, stacking hardware, pedestal or under-counter requirements and any electrical or plumbing work. No single price is valid across regions or dates, and the cheapest machine can cost more if it requires an unusual installation or fails to fit the available space.
Operating-cost estimates
Use EnergyGuide’s annual estimate together with your local electricity, gas and water rates. A front-loader’s lower water use may matter most in a home that heats water electrically or pays high sewer charges; the same label value can have a different financial impact elsewhere. Treat the label as a standardized comparison, not a personal bill forecast.

ENERGY STAR provides a rebate finder and says partners sponsor rebates for certified products. Availability, qualifying model numbers, dates and income or utility requirements vary. Verify the current terms with the sponsoring utility or program before counting a rebate in your budget.
Follow a repeatable buying process
- Measure the room. Record the opening, floor-to-ceiling height, door or lid clearance, hookup positions and the route from the delivery entrance to the laundry area.
- Choose the loading format. Decide whether a front door or overhead lid suits your reach, room layout and habit of adding forgotten items.
- Describe your largest routine load. Include comforters, mattress pads, towels and other bulky pieces, not just everyday clothing.
- Set a practical capacity range. Use your load frequency and the available space; do not substitute a household-size chart for the model’s manual.
- Shortlist certified models. Search the ENERGY STAR product finder and record the exact model number, capacity, IMEF and IWF.
- Read the EnergyGuide label. Compare estimated annual use and cost with similarly sized models, noting that the figures use standardized assumptions.
- Verify installation documents. Confirm dimensions, clearances, stacking or under-counter compatibility, hose and drain requirements, floor limitations and delivery access.
- Price the complete purchase. Add installation, accessories, haul-away and any rebate only after confirming current eligibility and terms.
- Check the owner’s manual. Look for cycle restrictions, comforter instructions, cleaning requirements, detergent guidance and maintenance warnings before placing the order.
Operate the washer for lower resource use
Run full loads when practical
ENERGY STAR says washers use about the same amount of energy regardless of load size, so it advises running full loads when practical. Do not overfill: clothing needs room to move, and the manual’s load guidance takes priority.

There is two water inlets on the panel for connecting the hose to easily add water. With the simple control panel, this mini washer is easy to operate and you can get clean clothes in three steps.
- [Product Usage Tips] 1. Don't overload. Overload may cause the motor to turn on overheating protection. 2. Balance the spinner to prevent it from losing balance, hitting the inner walls, stopping work. 3. If the machine doesn’t drain, check that the water hose is not clogged or bent, which may prevent the spinner from working properly. 4. Make sure the drain height is less than 45 inches.
Use cold water when the load allows it
ENERGY STAR says water heating accounts for about 90% of the energy used to operate a washer and suggests cold washing for most loads. Use a warmer setting when oily stains, sanitation requirements, fabric-care instructions or the detergent call for it.
Select an appropriate spin setting
A high or extended spin can remove more moisture and reduce dryer time, according to ENERGY STAR. Use the highest suitable setting for the fabric and load balance; delicate items may require a gentler spin.
Recommended Free Tools
Prevent moisture and odor problems
Front-load door care
The airtight seal on a front-loader can trap moisture after a cycle. ENERGY STAR advises leaving the door ajar for an hour or two so moisture can evaporate. Keep children from climbing into an open washer.
Cleaning and detergent instructions
Some manufacturers recommend monthly cleaning steps, but the procedure and products differ. Follow the exact owner’s manual for gasket, dispenser, drum and filter care rather than applying a universal bleach routine. Wipe standing water where the manual permits, and investigate persistent odor, leaks or residue instead of masking the symptom with extra detergent.
Know what current federal rules do—and do not—tell you
The U.S. Department of Energy’s consumer clothes-washer page includes both proposed actions and final rules. A proposal is not an enacted requirement. The page reports proposed notices dated May 16, 2025 concerning water-use and compact-washer standards. It separately reports a 2024 final-rule confirmation with compliance required March 1, 2028, and a test-procedure rule whose amendments became mandatory for testing starting July 16, 2025.
Because rulemaking and compliance details can change, use the current DOE and Federal Register status when making claims about what manufacturers must meet. For a purchase decision, the model’s present certification, EnergyGuide label and installation documents are more immediately useful than a proposed future standard.
