How to Choose a Wallet for STX and Other Stacks Assets

For most people, the sensible starting point is Leather or Xverse. Stacks Labs describes both as free, self-custody wallets for STX and BTC, and its official materials identify Ledger integration or support for both. Choose between them by checking your device, the assets and Stacks applications you plan to use, the signing methods those applications require, and whether you want optional hardware-backed key storage. A wallet’s general Stacks compatibility does not prove that it supports every token, NFT, app action, or hardware model.

The short answer: start with Leather or Xverse, then verify your exact use case

There is no single “best” Stacks wallet for every user. The two principal choices in the Stacks Labs wallet guide are Leather and Xverse. Both are presented as free, non-custodial software wallets that work with STX and BTC. Both can be connected to a Ledger hardware wallet according to the cited Stacks materials.

That recommendation is a starting point rather than a blanket compatibility guarantee. Wallet features, supported assets, browser and mobile availability, app integrations, and protocol instructions can change. Before depositing funds, check the current wallet page and the Stacks application you intend to use. Confirm the exact asset and operation—such as receiving STX, transferring a token, signing a contract call, viewing an NFT, stacking, or moving BTC into an sBTC flow.

What you are choosing: custody, keys, and access

Self-custody means you control the recovery phrase

Leather and Xverse are described as self-custody wallets. The wallet software helps you create addresses and sign transactions, but it does not hold the controlling secret for you in the way an exchange account does. The recovery phrase is the critical backup: anyone who obtains it can generally recreate the wallet and control its assets, while losing it can leave you without a way to restore access.

A device password or PIN is different. Stacks Labs explains that the password or PIN unlocks the wallet application on a particular device; the recovery phrase is the key to restoring the wallet. Changing an app password does not replace the recovery phrase, and a phone or browser profile should never be treated as the only backup.

Custody changes your responsibilities

  • You must verify the receiving address before sending funds.
  • You must protect the recovery phrase from theft, loss, screenshots, cloud sync, and accidental disclosure.
  • You must check network, asset, and application details before signing.
  • You cannot normally ask a wallet provider to reverse a transaction sent to the wrong address.

Self-custody can reduce dependence on an intermediary, but it does not make a transaction automatically safe or irreversible errors recoverable. Choose it only if you are prepared to manage backups and approvals yourself.

Compare devices and platforms before installing

The official Stacks wallet directory shows that device availability differs across wallet choices. Start with the device you actually use, then confirm that the current release supports the browser, operating system, or mobile platform you need.

Leather

The directory lists Leather with browser-extension and mobile options. It also lists application connections, non-custodial use, buying or trading STX, stacking or pooling, and Ledger integration. If your normal workflow is a desktop browser that connects to several Stacks applications, Leather is a natural candidate to test first. Verify that the mobile and extension versions expose the same operation before assuming feature parity.

Xverse

Xverse is listed with mobile and Chrome availability. The directory identifies buying, swapping, and stacking, along with application connections, NFT viewing and trading, non-custodial use, and Ledger support. This makes it worth considering if you move between a phone and Chrome or expect to manage NFTs as well as fungible assets. Confirm which functions are available on each platform and whether the application you use supports the wallet’s current connection method.

Other directory entries

Ryder, D’CENT, and Asigna also appear in the official directory. Their listings have their own device and feature information, but the cited material does not establish a complete, wallet-by-wallet matrix for STX, BTC, sBTC, every token standard, NFT actions, or every Stacks application. If one of these options interests you, write down your required operations first and verify each one against current documentation.

Match the wallet to the assets and tasks you actually need

STX and BTC

Stacks Labs describes Leather and Xverse as working with STX and BTC. That is a useful baseline, not proof of identical behavior. Check the current receiving and sending screens, network labels, and fee presentation before moving a significant amount. A wallet can support an asset for holding while offering fewer options for swapping, staking, trading, or application signing.

sBTC

The official sBTC information page identifies Leather and Xverse as supported wallets. Its described flow starts with BTC in a supported non-custodial wallet and uses a Stacks receiving address. Read the current sBTC instructions carefully: bridging or depositing is an asset-specific operation, and the address, network, amount, and transaction status must all be checked before confirmation.

Do not infer that every wallet listed in the general directory can receive or use sBTC just because it supports STX. Confirm sBTC support and the precise operation in the current sBTC documentation and wallet interface.

Tokens and NFTs

Stacks applications may use fungible tokens, NFTs, contract calls, and custom signing flows. Xverse’s directory entry specifically mentions NFT viewing and trading; Leather’s entry specifically mentions application connections and STX-related functions. Those descriptions do not establish identical support for every token or NFT collection.

  • Confirm that the wallet can display the asset, not merely hold it at an address.
  • Check whether the intended application can connect to the wallet.
  • Verify that the wallet can sign the required transfer, approval, listing, or contract-call method.
  • Use a small test transaction when the asset or application is unfamiliar.

Buying, swapping, stacking, and pooling

The directory lists buying or trading STX for Leather and buying, swapping, and stacking for Xverse. It also lists stacking or pooling for Leather. These labels describe available categories in the directory, not a guarantee that a particular provider, geographic region, payment method, minimum, fee, or pool is available to you. Open the current in-wallet flow and confirm the terms before authorizing anything.

Check Stacks application compatibility, not just wallet branding

Stacks Connect documentation shows meaningful differences between wallet providers for calls, transfers, tokens, NFTs, and signing methods. In practice, an application may connect successfully for one operation and fail for another, or present different prompts depending on the provider.

Use an operation checklist

  1. Name the application. Record the exact Stacks app, marketplace, bridge, or service you intend to use.
  2. Name the action. Distinguish a simple STX transfer from a token transfer, NFT listing, contract call, message signature, or hardware-backed signature.
  3. Check the provider table. Look for the wallet provider and the method required by that action in the current Stacks Connect compatibility documentation.
  4. Confirm the network and address. Make sure the application and wallet show the same network and that the receiving address is yours.
  5. Test with a low-value action. If the application is new to you, perform the smallest practical transaction or connection test first.

A “Connect wallet” button is not a complete compatibility test. The important question is whether the wallet can approve the exact request you will sign.

Decide whether you need Ledger hardware support

A Ledger device is optional. You do not need hardware storage to use Stacks, Leather, or Xverse. Hardware support matters when you want transaction approvals and key material separated from the everyday browser or phone environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stacks materials identify Ledger integration for Leather and Ledger support for Xverse. They do not establish support for every Ledger model, asset, firmware version, browser, mobile connection, or Stacks application. Check the current wallet and device documentation before buying or transferring funds.

Hardware is useful when

  • You hold an amount whose loss would be difficult to tolerate.
  • You prefer to approve transactions on a separate physical device.
  • You can maintain a secure recovery process for both the hardware wallet and the associated accounts.
  • Your required Stacks applications explicitly support the hardware signing path.

Hardware does not solve every risk

  • A hardware device cannot protect you from approving a malicious or incorrect transaction.
  • It does not remove the need to verify addresses, networks, fees, and contract details.
  • It does not make an unsupported token or application compatible.
  • You still need to protect the recovery material and follow the device manufacturer’s backup instructions.

Protect and back up the recovery phrase

Stacks Labs’ guide gives Leather a 24-word recovery phrase and Xverse a 12-word recovery phrase. Use the phrase exactly as shown by the wallet; do not combine words from different wallets or create a shortened backup.

Recommended handling

  1. Generate or reveal the phrase only inside the genuine wallet application obtained through its official download path.
  2. Write the words down privately, in the correct order, while offline.
  3. Check the spelling and sequence using the wallet’s verification prompt.
  4. Store the written backup where unauthorized people cannot reach it and where ordinary device failure will not destroy it.
  5. Consider a second physical copy only if you can secure both copies and understand the additional exposure.
  6. Never share the phrase with support staff, a website, a person claiming to be an administrator, or anyone offering to “validate” your wallet.

Stacks Labs states: “Only download from the official site.” Its June 21, 2026 guide recommends navigating from the official wallet site to the app-store or extension download, confirming the developer, and keeping the recovery phrase private. These are basic precautions, not a guarantee against phishing or loss.

Set up Leather or Xverse safely

  1. Choose the platform. Decide whether you will use a browser extension, Chrome, mobile app, or a combination supported by the wallet’s current documentation.
  2. Reach the download from the official wallet site. Follow the site’s link to the extension store or app store rather than relying on an advertisement or an unsolicited message.
  3. Verify the developer and application name. Check spelling, publisher information, permissions, and reviews for obvious impersonation signals.
  4. Create a new wallet or import an existing one. If you import, enter the recovery phrase only into the genuine wallet application. Never type it into a web form sent by another person.
  5. Record the recovery phrase offline. Leather uses 24 words in the cited Stacks Labs guide; Xverse uses 12. Complete the wallet’s verification step.
  6. Set a device password or PIN. Treat it as an unlock control for that device, not as a replacement for the recovery phrase.
  7. Copy a receiving address and verify it. Compare the address shown in the wallet with the address shown by the sender or application. For a new setup, start with a small amount.
  8. Connect an application only when needed. Review the requested permissions and the account address before approving the connection.
  9. Read every signing prompt. Check the operation, amount, recipient, network, and fees. Reject prompts you do not understand.
  10. Add hardware only after confirming compatibility. If you use Ledger, verify the exact model and Stacks operation before moving funds or relying on it for an application.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Installing an impersonator

Fake wallet extensions and mobile applications often imitate names and icons. Stop installation if the developer, domain, permissions, or download path does not match the official wallet site. If you entered a recovery phrase into a suspicious application, assume it is exposed: create a new wallet in a verified application and move assets to the new address, subject to the relevant network and transaction requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing the PIN with the backup

A forgotten device PIN may require a wallet reset and restoration from the recovery phrase. Losing the phrase is more serious. Keep the offline backup available before deleting an application, replacing a phone, clearing browser data, or resetting a device.

Assuming a connected app can perform every action

Connection success does not prove support for token transfers, NFTs, contract calls, or a particular signature method. Consult the current Stacks Connect compatibility information and use a low-value test where practical.

Sending an asset to an address without checking support

An address format alone is not evidence that the recipient wallet can display or use an asset. Verify support for STX, BTC, sBTC, the specific token or NFT, and the intended application before sending.

Buying hardware before checking the workflow

Ledger support is listed for Leather and Xverse, but the cited materials do not confirm every model or feature combination. Confirm the complete path—wallet, device, browser or phone, asset, and application—before purchasing or transferring funds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision framework

Use this sequence to narrow the choice without relying on a generic “best wallet” ranking.

  1. Start with your device. If you require mobile access, Chrome, a browser extension, or a particular operating system, eliminate wallets that do not list that platform.
  2. List your assets. Write down STX, BTC, sBTC, tokens, and NFTs separately. A wallet’s support for one does not establish support for the others.
  3. List your actions. Include receiving, sending, swapping, buying, stacking, pooling, NFT viewing or trading, and contract calls.
  4. Check each application. Verify the wallet provider and signing method in the current Stacks Connect compatibility information.
  5. Choose your custody level. Decide whether software-only self-custody is sufficient or whether you want optional Ledger-backed approvals.
  6. Compare recovery procedures. Make sure you understand the phrase length, backup location, device unlock method, and restoration process before depositing funds.
  7. Test before scaling up. Connect, receive, and sign a small transaction first. Keep records of the address and network you used.
Your priority What to verify first Likely starting point from the official materials
Desktop browser and broad Stacks application use Extension availability and the app’s required Connect methods Leather
Mobile plus Chrome access Platform parity and the application’s wallet connector Xverse
NFT viewing or trading Collection support and the exact listing or transfer signature Xverse
Stacking or pooling Current network rules, pool terms, minimums, and supported signing flow Leather or Xverse, then verify the specific service
sBTC use Current sBTC instructions, wallet support, address type, and transaction status Leather or Xverse
Hardware-backed approvals Exact Ledger model, wallet version, platform, asset, and application support Leather or Xverse with Ledger, after compatibility checks
A different custody or device model Current directory details for the required asset and operation Ryder, D’CENT, or Asigna only after direct verification

What to verify before committing funds

  • The wallet was downloaded through the official site and the listed developer is genuine.
  • Your required platform is supported today, not merely shown in an old screenshot.
  • STX, BTC, sBTC, and each specific token or NFT you need are supported for the operation you intend.
  • The Stacks application supports your wallet provider and signing method.
  • You have written and verified the correct recovery phrase offline.
  • You understand the difference between the device PIN and the recovery phrase.
  • Ledger support, if desired, covers your exact model and workflow.
  • You have completed a small test transaction before transferring a larger balance.

Wallet support is volatile: app-store listings, token displays, hardware compatibility, and protocol instructions can change. Recheck the current official wallet, Stacks, sBTC, and application documentation immediately before an important transaction.
