VSCodium uses Open VSX as its default extension gallery. That answers where to search first, but it does not answer whether an extension will work or whether its license permits use in VSCodium. Check three things separately: whether the exact extension is available, whether its license and marketplace terms allow your use, and whether its code supports VSCodium rather than checking exclusively for Microsoft’s product.
If a required extension is missing or blocked, your documented options are to ask its maintainer to publish it on Open VSX, request publication through the VSCodium project, or install a VSIX obtained from the extension’s official source release. A VSIX changes the delivery method; it does not override licensing or technical incompatibility.

What VSCodium’s extension marketplace actually is
VSCodium is a community-built distribution of the Visual Studio Code editor. Its default extension gallery is Open VSX. VSCodium’s marketplace documentation states that its product.json file is set up to use open-vsx.org as the extension gallery by default. Consequently, the Extensions view in a standard VSCodium installation searches Open VSX rather than the Microsoft Marketplace.

It does not certify that every listed package is compatible with every editor. An extension can be absent because its maintainer has not published it to Open VSX, unavailable because of distribution policy, or present but unusable because it expects the official Microsoft product or depends on proprietary APIs.

Availability, permission and operation are three different questions:
- Availability: Is the exact publisher-and-extension identifier listed in the gallery, or is there an official VSIX release?
- Permission: Does the extension’s license allow installation in VSCodium, and do the terms of the distribution service permit the intended use?
- Operation: Does the extension run correctly in VSCodium’s product environment, APIs and version?
Do not treat a search result, a successful download or a completed installation as proof of all three.
Which distribution route should you choose?
Use the route that satisfies your particular extension’s coverage, terms, compatibility, trust and version-management requirements. There is no evidence-based ranking that makes one route best for every extension, and the available catalogue and policies can change.

Step 1: Find the exact extension, not a similarly named one
- Open VSCodium’s Extensions view.
- Search using the extension’s exact name and publisher. If you know the identifier, search for that identifier rather than a broad feature phrase.
- Open the listing and compare its publisher, identifier, description, repository and release information with the maintainer’s documentation.
- Check that the version shown is suitable for your VSCodium release and operating system. A similarly named package can be a fork, an abandoned project or an unrelated tool.
Because VSCodium’s default service is Open VSX, an absent result first means “not found in this catalogue.” It does not establish that the extension cannot run in VSCodium. Search the maintainer’s official source repository or release page before choosing another route.
Step 2: Check the license and marketplace terms
Read the extension’s own license and its installation or support notes. Look for restrictions on the editor, product family, redistribution, telemetry, commercial use and bundled services. A package can have source code that looks portable while its license limits where it may be installed.

This wording is a real constraint, not a warning that can be bypassed by editing a setting. Reconfiguring VSCodium to point at another gallery, downloading a package manually or installing a VSIX does not prove that the license or marketplace terms permit the use. If the terms are unclear, ask the extension maintainer or your organization’s legal adviser rather than treating technical success as permission.
Step 3: Check technical compatibility with VSCodium
Read the extension’s documentation for supported products and inspect its requirements. Pay particular attention to statements that name the official Microsoft product, require proprietary services, or describe APIs unavailable in VSCodium. Some extensions perform a product check at startup; others fail only when a particular command is invoked.
VSCodium maintains a compatibility page with examples it considers incompatible or problematic. The current examples include C/C++, LaTeX Workshop, Live Share, Python and several Remote Development extensions. The list can change as extensions and VSCodium releases change, so verify the current entry before committing to a migration.
Compatibility is also version-specific. An extension that worked in one VSCodium release can fail after an API change, while a newer extension release may drop support for an older editor. Record the VSCodium version, extension version and operating system when diagnosing a failure.
Known replacement paths for common incompatibilities
VSCodium’s compatibility guidance identifies project-listed alternatives for several categories. These are starting points, not guarantees that every feature will match the original workflow.

C and C++ development
For language intelligence and debugging tasks, VSCodium lists clangd and Native Debug as alternatives to incompatible C/C++ tooling. Compare compiler discovery, IntelliSense-like features, debugger protocols, build integration and platform support before switching. A replacement may require new configuration files or different command names.
Python
VSCodium lists BasedPyright as a replacement option for Python scenarios. Check interpreter selection, virtual-environment discovery, type-checking settings, test integration, linting and notebook support against your actual project. Do not assume that settings from another Python extension transfer unchanged.
Remote development
For some remote-development tasks, VSCodium points to Open Remote extensions. Confirm which transport, container, SSH or development-environment feature you need. “Remote development” is a category rather than a single capability, and support can differ between local, container and remote-host workflows.
Other categories
For LaTeX, collaboration, language servers and other categories named on the compatibility page, check the extension’s own product requirements and current VSCodium notes. If no listed replacement covers your use case, prefer a maintainer-supported package or a tool that communicates through standard protocols instead of relying on an editor-specific integration.
What to do when an extension is missing
Ask the maintainer to publish on Open VSX
Open the extension’s official repository or project contact channel and request an Open VSX publication. Include the exact extension identifier, your VSCodium version and the reason the package is needed. A maintainer-controlled publication is preferable to an unverified repackage because it preserves provenance and gives the project control over releases.
Request publication through VSCodium
VSCodium documents a route for requesting publication through a pull request to its repository. Follow the project’s current contribution instructions and provide the upstream project details. This is a request for distribution, not a compatibility certification; the extension still needs to satisfy its own license and technical requirements.

Install an official VSIX
If the maintainer publishes a VSIX through an official source repository or release page, download the intended version from that source. In VSCodium, use the Extensions view’s action menu and choose Install from VSIX…, then select the downloaded file. Some installations also expose the equivalent command-line installation option; use the command shown by your installed VSCodium build rather than copying a command for a different package name.
After installation, open the extension details and confirm its identifier and version. Restart or reload the window if VSCodium requests it, then exercise the feature you actually need. Keep the release notes and source URL with your project records so another developer can reproduce the installation.

- Source: Download only from the maintainer’s official repository, release page or another source you explicitly trust.
- Identity: Verify the publisher, extension identifier and version inside the package against the project’s documentation.
- Integrity: Use a checksum or signed release when the maintainer provides one. A file merely named “official” is not evidence of provenance.
- Permissions: Review the extension’s requested capabilities, network behavior and bundled binaries where documented.
- Terms: Re-read the license and any marketplace restrictions; sideloading does not remove them.
- Reproducibility: Record the VSCodium version, VSIX version and installation date, and decide how you will receive security and bug-fix updates.
Test a manually installed extension in a non-critical workspace first. If it activates a language server, debugger or external binary, verify that component separately and avoid granting broader system access than the workflow requires.
Gallery configuration: what changing it can and cannot solve
VSCodium’s documentation describes gallery configuration through its product settings. Changing the configured gallery can make a different catalogue visible, but it does not alter an extension’s license, add missing proprietary APIs or remove product checks. Treat a gallery change as a catalogue decision only.
Before changing configuration, note the original value and test with a disposable profile or separate installation. A gallery may expose packages with different publisher metadata, update behavior or trust assumptions. After the change, repeat the exact-identifier, license and technical-compatibility checks; do not infer safety from the fact that a listing appears.
Version management and updates
Choose a version strategy before installing an extension used by a team or build environment.
- Track the moving release: Use the gallery’s normal update path when you want current fixes and accept that behavior can change.
- Pin a known release: Microsoft’s extension documentation describes downloading a specific-version VSIX. A pinned package can improve reproducibility, but you must monitor later security and compatibility releases yourself.
- Test before rollout: Install updates in a test profile, open representative projects and run the commands, builds, tests or debugging sessions that matter to your team.
- Document rollback: Keep the previously working VSIX or version reference and know how to disable or uninstall the extension from the Extensions view.
Do not mix an extension update, a VSCodium update and a gallery change in one troubleshooting step. Change one variable, record the result and keep the failing version information.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The extension does not appear in search
- Confirm that VSCodium is using its expected Open VSX gallery and that the network permits access to it.
- Search by exact publisher and identifier.
- Check the maintainer’s repository for an Open VSX listing or official VSIX.
- If neither exists, use the publication-request routes rather than installing an unverified repackage.
The extension appears but will not install
Read the error for an engine-version requirement, platform mismatch or dependency failure. Compare the extension’s declared supported editor versions with your VSCodium release. If the package is restricted to a product or service you are not using, do not keep retrying through a different gallery; evaluate a compatible replacement or ask the maintainer.
The extension installs but is disabled or refuses to activate
Open the extension’s details and VSCodium’s output or developer logs. Product checks, missing APIs, incompatible dependencies and unsupported operating systems commonly produce this pattern. Record the exact message, then check the current VSCodium compatibility guidance and the extension’s issue tracker.

A command is present but the feature is incomplete
Test the smallest workflow described in the extension’s documentation. Missing proprietary services, external binaries or language-server components can leave menus visible while core operations fail. Compare required dependencies and configuration with the replacement or upstream documentation.
An update broke a working setup
- Identify which component changed: VSCodium, the extension, a dependency or the gallery configuration.
- Disable the extension to confirm the cause.
- Restore the previously known-good extension version if you retained an official VSIX or version reference.
- Report the reproducible details to the maintainer, including versions, operating system and logs.
A repeatable decision checklist
Use this checklist for every extension that matters to your workflow:
- Search Open VSX from VSCodium’s Extensions view.
- Verify the exact publisher and identifier.
- Read the extension license and supported-product notes.
- Check VSCodium’s current compatibility guidance for the category or extension.
- Look for product checks, proprietary APIs, external services and required binaries.
- Choose Open VSX, a maintainer-provided VSIX, a publication request or a replacement based on those findings.
- For a VSIX, verify source, version, integrity information and update plan before installation.
- Test the real workflow in a disposable profile or representative project.
- Record the VSCodium version, extension version and configuration so you can reproduce or roll back the setup.
The practical rule is simple: start with Open VSX because it is VSCodium’s default, then evaluate every extension independently. Catalogue presence is only the first check; lawful use, technical support and a trustworthy update path determine whether the extension is a sound choice.
