Start with a Mumbai VPS if your stream is being sent from India, then test Singapore and any other nearby locations your provider actually offers. Mumbai is a sensible first candidate, not a guaranteed winner: the best location depends on the route from that specific VPS to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, and no universal Mumbai-versus-Singapore benchmark establishes which is faster or more reliable.

Use the same encoder settings and destination for each test. Compare sustained upload capacity, stream health, interruptions and route consistency—not just the region’s name or a single speed-test result.

Why VPS location matters—and what it cannot tell you

A VPS sends the encoded video from its data center to YouTube. The network path between that server and YouTube’s ingest endpoint can affect latency, available upload capacity and the likelihood of interruptions. A nearby location is a useful starting point, but geography alone does not prove that its network route will perform best.

Google Cloud lists Mumbai (asia-south1) and Singapore (asia-southeast1) for its Live Stream API locations. That list describes Google Cloud’s Live Stream API, not the locations offered by every VPS provider. It also is not a benchmark showing that either region is fastest for an Indian VPS-to-YouTube stream.

Google Cloud says location choices for its live-stream service may involve latency, cost, resiliency and co-location. Those are useful factors to consider, but they do not establish the performance of a VPS plan. Check the specific provider’s locations, network, support and continuous-use terms.

How to compare Mumbai, Singapore and other VPS regions

  1. Check the provider’s actual inventory. List the regions available on the VPS plan you might use. Do not assume a Google Cloud API region is also available as a VPS location from another provider.
  2. Choose candidates. Begin with Mumbai if offered, then compare Singapore or another nearby region that the provider offers. Include a farther option only if it is a realistic alternative for your budget or needs.
  3. Keep the test consistent. Use the same VPS plan where possible, the same source video, encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and YouTube destination. A different workload can make a region comparison misleading.
  4. Measure sustained performance. Check outbound capacity during a representative stream, not only with a brief speed test. Compare route latency and consistency, packet loss or interruptions where measurable, and YouTube’s stream-health status.
  5. Assess operational fit. Compare recurring cost, provider resiliency and support. Confirm in the current plan terms that continuous streaming is permitted and check any bandwidth or sustained-use limits; these vary by provider.
  6. Retest when conditions change. Repeat the test if the provider changes its network, the route changes, or the stream begins showing health problems. There is no fixed retest interval established by YouTube or Google’s cited guidance.

For the comparison to be useful, record the region, test time, encoder configuration, destination and observed health results. A location that looks good in one brief test may not remain consistent over a long broadcast.

Set the encoder and YouTube stream up for a fair test

Choose a bitrate that matches the video

YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance gives recommendations by codec, resolution and frame rate. Use its current table for your actual configuration rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. These are YouTube technical recommendations, not a measured guarantee of the bandwidth a particular VPS will sustain.

Verify that the VPS can sustain the selected outbound bitrate during a representative stream. A short speed test is not proof that a connection can carry a continuous broadcast without interruption. The retrieved guidance does not set a universal extra-bandwidth margin, so do not treat an invented headroom figure as an official threshold.

Use supported video and keyframe settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Match the settings to the stream you intend to run, then confirm them in the encoder and test before relying on the VPS for a continuous channel.

Prefer RTMPS for the ingest connection

YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP. Its ingestion protocol documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP carried through an SSL connection and a suitable choice for most ordinary user content, particularly when lower latency is needed. Use the RTMPS server address and stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Studio; do not expose the key publicly or reuse a key contrary to your channel’s security practices.

Choose latency for the audience, not because the stream is continuous

YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance distinguishes low latency for limited interaction from ultra-low latency for real-time audience engagement. Both reduce the time available for read-ahead buffering, which can make network issues more noticeable; YouTube warns that ultra-low latency can increase buffering. For a non-interactive 24/7 channel, normal latency may be a reasonable stability-oriented choice. Select the mode in YouTube Studio based on the viewing experience you need.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Run an upload-speed check from the VPS. YouTube recommends checking upload speed. Test the server’s outbound connection to assess whether it can support the selected stream configuration.
  2. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast. Use representative audio and video movement rather than a static or unusually light sample. Confirm the selected resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and RTMPS connection.
  3. Watch YouTube stream health during the test. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during an event. Look for warnings, drops or other signs the connection is not consistently delivering the configured stream.
  4. Compare candidate regions under equivalent conditions. Repeat the same test for each VPS location, then compare continuity and health along with sustained outbound capacity and route consistency.
  5. Check the VPS provider’s operating terms. Confirm that the specific plan permits continuous streaming and understand any applicable bandwidth or sustained-use limits before using it as a 24/7 host.

YouTube recommends testing encoder settings before going live and monitoring stream health while live. A test cannot guarantee future performance: provider routing and network conditions can change.

Troubleshoot a weak or unstable test

  • YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops: Check the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity, encoder bitrate and route consistency. Repeat with the same settings and destination, and compare another provider region rather than assuming a closer location will fix the problem.
  • A speed test looks good but the broadcast is interrupted: A brief test does not establish continuous performance. Run a representative stream test, monitor health over time and check for packet loss or interruptions where measurable.
  • The stream is stable but viewers experience too much delay: Review the latency mode in YouTube Studio. Lower-latency settings may suit interactive streams, but reduced read-ahead buffering can expose network issues and ultra-low latency can increase buffering.
  • RTMPS does not connect: Verify that the encoder uses the RTMPS server address and stream key displayed for the active broadcast in YouTube Studio. Check for a copied or outdated key and confirm the encoder supports the selected protocol.
  • A provider will not confirm continuous use: Do not assume that an advertised VPS plan permits a 24/7 streaming workload. Ask the provider or check its current terms before committing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If managing a VPS and comparing routes is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live; the cloud loops the video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

  • Nothing has to stay running at home.
  • Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.
