The best smart TV VPN depends first on your television’s operating system. Android TV and Fire TV have documented VPN apps; Samsung Tizen and LG webOS often call for a router-based setup or, in some cases, a DNS feature that is not an encrypted VPN. Check your exact TV model and OS before subscribing.
Start with the TV platform
“Smart TV” does not describe one app store or setup method. Identify whether your set runs Android TV or Google TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Tizen, or LG webOS, then confirm the provider supports that platform and your device version. A feature listed for one operating system or model should not be assumed to work on another.

Native VPN app on the TV or streaming device
When your platform has a supported VPN app, install it on the television or streaming device, sign in, and connect to a location. This is generally the simplest route for that device. It does not automatically cover other devices on your home network.

VPN configured on a router
A router VPN can route traffic from devices connected through that router, subject to the router’s capabilities and configuration. It can be useful when the TV lacks a native VPN app, but check provider instructions for your router model and understand which network devices will use the VPN route.
DNS service such as MediaStreamer
A DNS feature may be easier to configure on some televisions, but it should not be mistaken for a VPN tunnel. ExpressVPN says of its MediaStreamer feature: “MediaStreamer is not a VPN and does not offer the privacy and security benefits of a VPN.” Its Samsung instructions also state that MediaStreamer cannot change locations. Treat it as a separate compatibility option, not as encrypted VPN protection.

Provider options by platform
Android TV and Google TV
Proton VPN’s Android TV app requires Android 8 or later, except builds installed from the Amazon Appstore, which support Android 7.1 and later, according to its support guidance accessed October 7, 2026. Proton also identifies Chromecast with Google TV support. Streaming support is available on paid Proton VPN plans. ExpressVPN and NordVPN also document Android TV apps. Confirm the app is available for your device and plan before subscribing.
Fire TV and Fire TV Stick
Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN document native Fire TV app routes. Proton’s guide specifically identifies Fire TV Stick support. A Fire TV Stick can be a practical add-on when the television’s own system lacks a VPN app, but the VPN app runs on and protects the Stick’s traffic; it does not secure apps running directly on the TV.

Samsung Tizen
NordVPN lists router or computer-sharing methods for Samsung TVs. ExpressVPN’s Samsung guide documents two alternatives: a router route and MediaStreamer DNS. Its tutorial, last updated September 29, 2026, says it was tested on a Samsung Crystal UHD DU8000 4K Smart TV. The MediaStreamer process involves registering the public IP address and entering DNS server addresses in the TV settings; follow the current vendor instructions for your model rather than assuming menu labels are identical across Samsung TVs.
LG webOS
ExpressVPN’s overview lists router or Aircove and MediaStreamer routes for LG televisions. That overview is not enough to establish compatibility for every webOS version or LG model, so check the current provider instructions for the exact set. The consulted NordVPN guide does not give an LG-specific setup path.
