A VPN can sometimes improve Overwatch latency if your internet provider is sending game traffic along a poor route, but it can also increase ping by adding another connection leg. There is no independent, repeatable comparison here that establishes five VPNs as the best for Overwatch. Treat any service as something to test on your own connection, not a guaranteed low-ping fix.
First identify what kind of network problem you have
Lag is not always a bandwidth problem, and a high ping reading is not the same symptom as packet loss. Overwatch’s LAT is a smoothed estimate of how long a server takes to respond after a player command. Blizzard says interpolation delay is normally around 50–60 ms; persistent latency above that level, or continuing packet-loss symptoms, warrants troubleshooting. Blizzard explains the in-game network metrics here.

Use the in-game Netgraph to examine minimum, average, and maximum values rather than judging a connection from one moment. Blizzard describes orange highlighted bars when latency exceeds interpolation delay. Look for a pattern across a match: a consistently high LAT, intermittent spikes, packet loss, or an unstable connection can point to different problems.
Try Blizzard’s connection fixes before adding a VPN
Establish a stable baseline first. Blizzard’s basic troubleshooting guidance recommends closing other programs that use the internet, power-cycling the modem, and testing a direct wired connection. It specifically notes that Wi-Fi can cause difficulties with online gaming. If symptoms continue after these checks, contact your internet service provider. See Blizzard’s connection troubleshooting steps.

When a VPN might help—and when it may make things worse
A VPN changes the route your traffic takes between your device and the game service. That can help if the route used by your provider is unusually poor and the VPN provides a better path. But the VPN also adds a leg to the connection, so a route that is farther away or less efficient can raise ping instead.
A years-old guide posted on Blizzard’s Overwatch forums discusses the possibility of a VPN offering a more optimized path in some situations, while warning that it may not work better and that Blizzard does not support troubleshooting VPN services. Treat that as conditional, dated guidance—not a current guarantee or an official recommendation. Read the forum guide.

- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
- Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
- Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
- Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
Provider support pages also acknowledge the tradeoff. NordVPN warns that connecting to a distant country can increase ping. ExpressVPN markets an Overwatch 2 use case and says connecting near the game server may help bypass routing problems; that is a vendor claim, not an independently verified result. These statements support testing nearby routes, not assuming a particular provider will reduce your latency.

- Record a no-VPN baseline. Play in the same game region and, as far as possible, under similar network conditions. Note LAT, packet loss, and whether latency is steady or spiky.
- Choose a nearby VPN endpoint. Start with an endpoint geographically close to you and relevant to the game region you actually use. Avoid testing a distant country first: NordVPN’s support guidance specifically cautions that distance can increase ping. NordVPN’s Windows connection guidance.
- Repeat the same comparison without changing other conditions. Record the same metrics over multiple sessions with the VPN on, then compare them with the baseline. A single match or one unusually good reading is not enough to establish a reliable improvement.
- Keep the VPN only if the overall result is better. Consider consistency and packet loss as well as average LAT. If the VPN increases latency, adds instability, or does not improve the problem repeatedly, disconnect it and continue troubleshooting the underlying connection.
How to assess services without a misleading “best” ranking
The available evidence does not support naming five independently tested winners or ranking providers by Overwatch ping. A provider’s server count, broad speed claims, or download-test results do not establish latency on your route to an Overwatch server. Compare services only on details that can be verified for your needs—such as whether they offer endpoints near you and your game region and support your device—and use your own repeated LAT, packet-loss, and stability results to judge performance.
