For most Android users in October 2026, start with Gemini—but only after confirming that your phone, Google account, language, country and required permissions support the features you need. Then compare assistants by actual jobs: controlling the phone, making calls, working with apps, responding from the lock screen, and integrating with Galaxy hardware or other paired devices.
Google is phasing out Google Assistant on mobile, while Samsung continues to offer Bixby on Galaxy devices and documents Google or Alexa as possible defaults on supported configurations. Availability and menus vary by model, software version, carrier, account type and region, so the right choice is the one that is available and reliable for your specific setup—not the one with the longest feature list.

Which voice assistants can you use on Android?
Android does not have one identical assistant experience on every phone. The options visible in your settings depend on the manufacturer, Android and app versions, account type, language, country and sometimes your mobile carrier.

Gemini is Google’s current conversational assistant for eligible Android devices. It can be used by voice or touch when the Google app is selected as the phone’s default assist app. Google notes that eligibility and individual features vary by device, signed-in account, supported language and location. Some work or school accounts have additional limitations.

Gemini’s Android Device assistance can perform a defined set of quick actions when configured correctly. Examples documented by Google include managing supported settings, changing volume, taking a photo or screenshot and powering off the device. Reading and replying to notifications requires notification access, and some device actions require the Google app to be the default assistant.
Google Assistant during the 2026 mobile transition
Google’s August 6, 2026 announcement says removal of Google Assistant from mobile began September 3, 2026 and may take several weeks to reach every device. On a phone, tablet or paired device where the change has taken effect, Google says you cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Google also says Nest and Home speakers and displays are unaffected, while cars with Google built-in can continue using Google Assistant beyond September 3, 2026.
Google support instructions still show how to switch from Gemini to Google Assistant where that option remains available. Treat that option as temporary and device-specific rather than a dependable long-term plan. Check your own phone and paired accessories before relying on an old Assistant routine.
Bixby
Bixby is Samsung’s assistant for Galaxy phones and tablets. Samsung says Bixby Voice requires a Samsung account and documents Bixby Voice and the Reminder app for creating reminders. Bixby is particularly relevant when your priority is Galaxy-specific device control rather than a cross-brand assistant.
Samsung’s 2026 One UI 8.5 announcement describes an updated, more conversational Bixby focused on controlling Galaxy devices. Samsung also cautions that recognition can vary with accent, dialect, wording, pronunciation, voice level and surrounding noise. That is a product description, not an independent accuracy comparison with Gemini.
Alexa and other third-party assistants
Samsung support material names Alexa as a possible default assistant on supported Galaxy configurations. That does not establish universal availability across all Android manufacturers, Android versions, app versions or markets. If you want a third-party assistant, confirm that it appears under your phone’s Default apps settings before planning around it.
Start with a device-and-account eligibility check
Do this before comparing individual commands. An assistant that is unavailable on your phone, account or language cannot be your practical choice.

Compare assistants by the jobs you actually need
| Decision axis | What to verify | What the documented behavior means |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Model, Android version, account, language and country | Gemini is conditional on device, account, language and location eligibility; work and school accounts may have limits. |
| Phone controls | Alarms, timers, settings, volume, notifications, camera and power | Gemini Device assistance supports a defined set of actions. Permissions and default-assistant status can determine which work. |
| Calls and contacts | Phone app, contacts, permissions and mobile plan | Gemini can place calls through the device Phone app when Google’s stated requirements are met. |
| Activation | Wake word, Voice Match, button or gesture, lock screen | Voice and touch activation are configurable, but exact controls differ by manufacturer and device. |
| Galaxy features | Bixby functions, Samsung account and Galaxy apps | Bixby remains a Galaxy-specific option; supported Galaxy configurations may also offer Google or Alexa as the default. |
| Continuity | Watch, earbuds, Android Auto, speakers and vehicle | Google’s 2026 transition treats paired mobile devices, Nest/Home hardware and cars with Google built-in differently. Verify each device separately. |
Choose Gemini when its requirements match your use
Gemini is the logical first candidate if you want Google’s current mobile assistant and your phone and account are eligible. Its strongest documented case here is a combination of conversational interaction and practical Android actions, not a proven superiority in speed, privacy or speech recognition. No comparable benchmark establishes those claims.
Device assistance and permissions
Gemini Device assistance can manage supported phone functions, including selected settings, volume, photos, screenshots and power controls. The supported list is narrower than “anything on the phone,” so test the exact commands that matter to you.
Notification handling is a separate permission. To read or reply to notifications, Gemini needs notification access. Some device actions also require the Google app to be selected as the default assistant. If a command fails, check those two prerequisites before concluding that the feature is unavailable.

Calls and connected apps
Gemini can make calls through the phone’s Phone app when the device has an active mobile plan, contacts are available and required permissions are granted. Contact synchronization, account setup and the Phone app’s permissions all affect the result.
Connected-app behavior is also conditional. A command involving another app may require that app to be connected, signed in or supported on your account and region. Treat “works with apps” as a setup question, not a blanket promise that every installed app is voice-controlled.
Choose Bixby when Galaxy control is your priority
Bixby deserves a close look if you own a Galaxy phone or tablet and want Samsung’s own device functions, reminders and account integration. Samsung requires a Samsung account for Bixby Voice. You can use Bixby Voice or the Reminder app to create reminders.
Samsung’s One UI 8.5 description presents Bixby as a more conversational device agent, but it also warns that recognition varies with speech and environment. Consider that warning when you use a strong accent, a dialect, unusual pronunciation, a quiet voice or a noisy room. It is a reason to test your own conditions, not evidence that Bixby is universally better or worse than another assistant.

Understand activation before you decide
An assistant can be technically capable yet inconvenient if you cannot invoke it in the situations where you need it.
Voice activation
Gemini can use “Hey Google” and Voice Match where those features are supported and enabled. Google notes that wake-word and related features are not available in every language, country or account type. Voice Match behavior can also change when the phone is locked.
Touch, buttons and gestures
Android devices may launch the default assistant from a power-button hold, Home gesture, navigation control or another manufacturer-specific action. Google’s setup instructions vary by device. Check which gesture or button your phone actually uses rather than assuming that a tutorial for another Android model applies.

Lock-screen access
Review lock-screen assistant settings separately. Some actions may require unlocking, while others can be allowed from the lock screen. A setting that improves convenience can also expose notification or personal information to anyone holding the phone, so choose deliberately.
Accessibility and noisy environments
If you rely on touch activation, use a physical button, or have difficulty with wake-word detection, test that path before switching assistants. Background noise, speaking volume and pronunciation can affect recognition; Samsung explicitly calls out those variables for Bixby, and Google’s feature availability also varies by configuration.
Set up and verify your primary assistant
- Open the default-assistant control: Go to Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app. Wording and location can vary. On some phones, search Settings for “default digital assistant.”
- Record what is currently selected: Note whether the phone uses Gemini, Google Assistant, Bixby, another listed app or None. If the option you want is absent, verify app installation, account eligibility, region and manufacturer support.
- Select the Google app for Gemini: If Gemini is your choice, make sure the Google app is the device’s default assist app, then open Gemini and complete its setup.
- Confirm eligibility: Check the phone, signed-in account, language and location requirements. Work or school users should confirm that their organization’s plan permits the features they need.
- Configure invocation: Review “Hey Google,” Voice Match, the power-button or gesture shortcut, and lock-screen access. Test both voice and touch if you expect to use both.
- Grant only the permissions you need: For Device assistance, review Google app permissions. To read or reply to notifications, enable notification access. If you do not need notification handling, leave that access disabled.
- Prepare calling: Confirm an active mobile plan, the Phone app’s permissions and correctly synced contacts. Place a test call to a known contact before depending on voice dialing.
- Configure Bixby if you use Galaxy functions: Sign in to the required Samsung account, test Bixby Voice and check the Reminder app if reminders are important.
- Test paired devices separately: Try the assistant from your watch, earbuds or headphones, Android Auto connection, speaker and vehicle. Record which assistant each device actually invokes.
Account for Google Assistant’s phased mobile removal
The September 3, 2026 date is the beginning of a rollout, not a guarantee that every phone changed on that day. Google said the removal could take weeks. During that period, two otherwise similar phones may show different options.
Google’s announcement distinguishes among device categories:
- Phones, tablets and paired mobile devices: Once the transition reaches an affected device, Google says Google Assistant cannot be restored there.
- Nest and Home speakers and displays: Google says these are unaffected by the mobile removal announcement.
- Cars with Google built-in: Google says Google Assistant can continue beyond September 3, 2026.
For a household with several device types, choose an assistant per device category rather than assuming that one setting controls everything. Recheck routines, wake-word behavior and button shortcuts after the transition reaches your phone.

Use this decision path
If you have a non-Samsung Android phone
- Check whether Gemini is eligible for your model, account, language and location.
- If it is eligible, list the Device assistance actions and calling features you actually need.
- Set the Google app as the default assist app and verify permissions.
- If Gemini is unavailable or a required feature is missing, inspect the Digital assistant app list for another supported option. Do not assume Alexa or another third-party app is universally available.
If you have a Galaxy phone or tablet
- Test Bixby for Galaxy-specific controls and reminders, including the Samsung account requirement.
- Check Samsung’s Default assistant setting for your exact model and software.
- Compare Bixby with Gemini based on the tasks you named, not general claims about intelligence or accuracy.
- If you select Google or Alexa as the default, confirm whether Bixby’s separate features remain available for the functions you still want.
If you depend on calls or notifications
- For calls, verify contacts, Phone app permissions and an active mobile plan.
- For notifications, enable notification access only if reading or replying is worth the additional access.
- Test while the phone is locked and unlocked, because the available actions may differ.
If you use a car, watch or earbuds
- Identify whether the accessory is paired to the phone, runs its own assistant integration or connects through a car system.
- Test the wake word and hardware shortcut on that accessory.
- Check the transition status independently; Google’s mobile announcement does not apply identically to every category.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The assistant does not appear in Default apps
Check that the relevant app is installed and updated, you are signed in to the expected account, and your language and region are supported. On Galaxy devices, model, carrier and software differences can remove choices shown on another phone.
Voice activation does nothing
Review the wake-word language, Voice Match, microphone permission, lock-screen setting and battery or background restrictions. Test the touch or button shortcut to determine whether the problem is recognition or launching.
A device command fails
Confirm that the Google app is the default assistant where required, then review Google app permissions. For notification commands, verify notification access. If the requested action is outside the documented Device assistance set, use the phone’s normal settings or app controls instead.
Calling fails or reaches the wrong contact
Check the active mobile plan, Phone app permissions and contact synchronization. Use a clearly named test contact and confirm which account supplies your contacts.
Google Assistant disappeared
During the 2026 rollout, disappearance may simply mean the transition has reached that device. Google says affected mobile devices cannot switch back. Check Gemini eligibility and setup, then test any paired device separately because speakers, displays and vehicles can follow different rules.
Bixby misunderstands speech
Reduce background noise, speak at a normal volume and try clearer wording. Samsung identifies accent, dialect, expression, pronunciation, voice level and surrounding noise as factors that can affect recognition. If the result remains unsuitable, compare the same command through the default assistant available on your Galaxy configuration.
Bottom line: select the assistant your phone can actually support
For a new primary assistant on most Android phones, verify Gemini first and configure it only after checking eligibility, default-assistant status and permissions. Galaxy owners should test Bixby alongside Gemini when Samsung device controls or reminders matter. Treat Google Assistant as a transition-era option whose availability can disappear from mobile, and treat Alexa or other third-party assistants as device-specific possibilities rather than universal Android choices. The decisive test is a short list of your own commands—device controls, calls, notifications, activation and paired-device use—performed on your exact phone and account.
