The best USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter is the one confirmed to work with your exact phone, tablet, or computer. Check that it supports digital-to-analog audio (DAC) conversion; a USB-C plug by itself does not guarantee compatibility. If you use headset calls or inline controls, verify those functions too.
What to check before you buy
- Confirm host compatibility. Look up the adapter requirements for your exact device model. Android’s adapter specification allows digital-to-analog adapters and says analog-only adapters are not supported. A shared USB-C connector does not mean every adapter will work with every host. Android’s USB headset specification describes the relevant adapter behavior.
- Look for DAC support. Many phones send digital audio through USB-C, so an adapter needs to convert that signal for a 3.5 mm connection. Samsung says some Galaxy devices require an adapter with a built-in DAC and advises choosing third-party adapters that are DAC-compatible. Samsung’s adapter guidance explains its requirements.
- Check microphone and button support if you need them. The adapter category can support stereo output, microphone input, headset detection, and button events, but the host must support the functions you plan to use. Don’t assume that an adapter which plays music will also pass calls or inline controls.
- Consider charging pass-through only if you need it. A basic adapter occupies the USB-C port. If you need to charge while listening, check for a model explicitly designed with charging pass-through and confirm that it works with your device; no particular pass-through model is established here.
- Check local terms. Price, availability, and warranty depend on the region and seller. Confirm them on the relevant local product page before ordering.

Will it work with my phone or computer?
There is no reliable answer from the port shape alone. For Android, the official specification describes digital-to-analog adapters as the supported type and excludes analog-only adapters. Samsung separately notes that some Galaxy devices require a built-in DAC. Google’s USB-C audio guidance also says to check that the host uses USB-C digital audio; sound settings and call support can differ between devices. Before buying, check the host manufacturer’s support page or ask the adapter maker to confirm your exact model. If you need headset calls, test microphone and call behavior as well as music playback, and check the host’s sound settings if audio does not route as expected.

Do my headphones’ microphone and buttons work?
They may, but support depends on both the adapter and the host. Android’s USB headset specification describes support for microphone input, headset detection, and button events alongside stereo playback; that describes possible behavior, not a guarantee for every device-and-adapter combination. If you rely on calls or inline volume and playback controls, make those features explicit compatibility requirements rather than assuming they come with headphone audio.
