The right USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter is determined by your exact phone model, not by the shape of its port. Before buying, confirm that the phone supports USB-C digital audio and whether its manufacturer requires an adapter with a built-in digital-to-analog converter (DAC). For newer Galaxy models covered by Samsung’s support guidance, choose a DAC-equipped adapter. Also verify microphone and call support if you use a headset rather than headphones.
Why a USB-C plug does not guarantee headphone compatibility
A USB-C connector carries digital data, but phones implement audio over that connector in different ways. Some models can send digital audio to an adapter that converts it to the analog signal required by a 3.5 mm headset. Other models may support only particular USB-C audio accessories, may require an active adapter with its own DAC, or may not support certain headset functions through USB-C at all.

That is why a physically snug connection can still produce silence, an error message, or headphones that work for music but not for calls. Google’s Pixel support guidance specifically tells owners to check that USB-C accessories work with digital audio and to verify the requirements for the particular phone. Samsung gives a similar warning for newer Galaxy devices and says the adapter must include a DAC.

The practical rule is simple: identify the exact phone model first, then buy an adapter whose audio method and headset functions are explicitly compatible with it.

How to choose a USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter that works with your phone
1. Identify the exact phone model
Do not rely on a family name such as “Galaxy,” “Pixel,” or “Android.” Requirements can differ between generations and regional variants. Find the full model name in Settings, on the phone’s original packaging, or on the manufacturer’s support page. Record the model number if one is shown.
Then open the current specifications or support documentation for that model and search for terms such as USB-C digital audio, USB audio, headset adapter, DAC, or 3.5 mm adapter. Google recommends this manufacturer check rather than assuming that every USB-C phone uses the same audio implementation.
2. Confirm that the phone supports digital audio over USB-C
Look for an explicit statement that the USB-C port supports digital audio or USB audio accessories. A USB-C port described only for charging and data is not proof that analog headphones will work through an adapter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the manufacturer does not publish a clear answer, treat compatibility as unconfirmed. A retailer listing that says “fits USB-C phones” is not a substitute for the phone maker’s specification. The relevant question is whether your model can output digital audio through USB-C and what type of adapter it expects.

- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
3. Check whether a built-in DAC is required
A DAC converts the phone’s digital audio stream into the analog signal that travels through the 3.5 mm socket to your headphones. In an adapter, the DAC is an electronic component; an adapter without one is generally a passive connection that can work only when the phone provides the necessary analog output itself.
For newer Galaxy models covered by Samsung’s support guidance, use a USB Type-C to 3.5 mm adapter with a built-in DAC. Samsung also tells customers to check this requirement when buying a third-party adapter. Its UK support page, updated 12 August 2026, states: If you choose an adaptor from a different manufacturer, always ensure that it is DAC compatible.
If your phone maker specifies a DAC, look for an unambiguous statement such as built-in DAC, digital audio converter, or DAC compatible in the product’s technical description. “USB-C to 3.5 mm” by itself does not establish that requirement.
4. Match the 3.5 mm functions you actually need
A 3.5 mm socket can carry stereo sound, but headset features depend on the phone, adapter, and headset wiring. If you need a microphone, remote buttons, voice calls, or video-call audio, confirm that the adapter supports those functions for your model.

Google’s Pixel USB-C earbud support documentation warns that some devices may not allow calls through USB-C earbuds. Therefore, do not infer call support merely because music plays. Look for explicit headset or microphone support in the phone documentation or adapter specifications.
5. Decide between the phone maker’s adapter and a third-party model
The phone maker’s adapter is usually the least ambiguous route when it is listed for your model, because its compatibility claim is tied to that manufacturer’s hardware. Samsung identifies a genuine USB Type-C to 3.5 mm Headset Jack Convert Adapter for relevant Galaxy devices. Availability can change, so verify that the current listing covers your exact model before ordering.
A third-party adapter can be suitable when its specifications clearly meet the phone’s requirements. Compare it on confirmed model compatibility, explicit digital-audio support, DAC status where required, and microphone/call support—not just price or cable length.
| Buying path | What to verify | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Phone maker’s adapter | Exact phone-model compatibility and current availability | You want the manufacturer’s stated solution and the model is listed |
| Third-party adapter with DAC | Built-in DAC, USB-C digital-audio support, and headset microphone/call support | Your phone requires a DAC or the maker does not sell an adapter |
| Adapter with no stated DAC | Only buy if the phone maker explicitly supports that type of adapter | The phone specification confirms the needed analog or passive path |
What “DAC required” means in practice
Digital music stored or streamed by the phone must become an analog electrical signal before it reaches conventional wired headphones. Depending on the phone design, that conversion can happen inside the phone, inside the adapter, or through another supported USB audio device.

A DAC-equipped adapter receives digital audio over USB-C and performs the conversion before sending left, right, and ground signals to the 3.5 mm plug. A passive adapter has no such converter. It depends on the phone exposing an analog audio path through USB-C, a feature that is not universal.
Do not treat a DAC label as a guarantee of every feature. The adapter can still lack microphone wiring, button support, or call compatibility. DAC status answers the audio-conversion question; it does not replace the model-specific and headset-function checks.
How to verify compatibility before you buy
- Write down the exact model. Include the model number and region when the manufacturer distinguishes variants.
- Read the manufacturer’s current support page or specifications. Confirm USB-C digital-audio support and note whether a DAC-equipped adapter is required.
- Define your headset functions. Decide whether you need stereo playback only, or also a microphone, inline controls, voice calls, and video calls.
- Read the adapter’s technical listing. Check for a built-in DAC when required, explicit USB-C digital-audio compatibility, and stated microphone/call support.
- Compare the maker’s adapter with third-party options. Reject any listing that does not identify the audio method or gives only a generic “works with USB-C phones” claim.
- Keep the compatibility evidence. Save the product description and the phone support page until you have tested playback and calls; this makes a return or exchange easier if the functions do not match.
Setup after the adapter arrives
- Unlock the phone and insert the USB-C plug fully. Remove a thick case temporarily if it prevents the plug from seating completely.
- Connect the 3.5 mm plug from your headphones or headset to the adapter.
- Start audio playback and raise the phone’s media volume. Check whether the phone displays a USB-audio or wired-headset indicator.
- Test the headset microphone with a voice recorder or a short call if microphone use matters to you.
- Test the functions you actually need: music, a video, an incoming call, outgoing call audio, microphone transmission, and any inline buttons.
A successful music test does not prove that calls or the microphone are supported, so perform those tests separately.
Troubleshooting: what to check when there is no sound
The phone does not recognize the adapter
- Unplug and reconnect the USB-C plug, making sure it is fully inserted.
- Remove the case or debris that may prevent a complete connection.
- Try the adapter with another known-compatible headset, then try a known-compatible adapter with your phone. This separates a headset fault from an adapter or phone-compatibility issue.
- Recheck the phone maker’s documentation. If the model requires a DAC and the adapter does not state that it has one, the mismatch is the most likely explanation.
The adapter is detected but audio remains silent
- Confirm that media volume is raised and that audio is not routed to a Bluetooth device or another USB accessory.
- Check the phone’s sound or connected-device settings for a USB-audio option. Google’s USB-C earbud guidance notes that some devices may require USB-C audio to be enabled.
- Restart the phone with the adapter disconnected, then reconnect it after the phone has finished starting.
- Test another audio app and another headset. If only one app fails, the issue may be app-specific rather than an adapter mismatch.
Music works but calls or the microphone do not
This symptom usually points to a function mismatch rather than a failure of the DAC. Confirm that the adapter supports headset microphones and calls on your exact phone. Google notes that some devices do not permit calls through USB-C earbuds, so a working music path cannot establish call support.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.
Check the call-audio route while a call is active and verify that the app has microphone permission. If the phone maker documents a limitation for USB-C headsets, no setting can add a function that the device does not support.
One adapter works and another does not
Compare their specifications rather than assuming the failed unit is defective. The working model may contain a DAC, while the other is passive; it may also use different headset wiring or explicitly support calls. Match the working adapter’s verified characteristics to the phone requirements.
Common buying mistakes
- Buying by connector shape alone: USB-C describes the plug, not a universal audio implementation.
- Ignoring the exact model: Requirements can change between generations in the same product family.
- Assuming every adapter has a DAC: A generic USB-C-to-3.5 mm description may omit the conversion hardware.
- Testing only music: Microphone and call support must be checked separately.
- Trusting a broad compatibility list: A seller’s list may not reflect a phone maker’s current guidance or regional variant.
- Concluding that the phone is defective too soon: Check USB-C audio settings and the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps first.
A quick decision checklist
- Exact phone model identified, including variant where relevant.
- Manufacturer documentation confirms USB-C digital-audio support.
- Built-in DAC selected when the phone maker requires it.
- Adapter listing states compatibility with the phone or its required audio standard.
- Microphone and call support confirmed if you use a headset.
- Current availability and return terms checked for the chosen model.
- Playback, microphone, and call functions tested after installation.
Bottom line for choosing your adapter
Start with the phone manufacturer’s documentation, not the adapter aisle. Select a model that supports USB-C digital audio for your exact phone, add a built-in DAC when required—especially for newer Galaxy models covered by Samsung’s guidance—and verify microphone and call support separately. If audio fails, check USB-C sound settings and the manufacturer’s troubleshooting advice before replacing the adapter.
