A USB-C port may support charging and data but lack DisplayPort Alt Mode, in which case no hub can send video to a monitor or TV. If your phone supports wired display output, choose a simple USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for display-only use, or a multiport dock with HDMI, USB data ports and USB Power Delivery (PD) pass-through when you also need peripherals and charging.
Before buying, verify wired-display support for the exact phone, then match the hub’s video standard, USB speeds, power allocation and cable requirements to your setup. The steps below cover iPhone, Samsung DeX and other USB-C phones without assuming that every model works with every hub.

Start with the phone: USB-C does not guarantee video
USB-C describes the connector, not every function carried through it. The phone must implement DisplayPort Alt Mode, or a vendor feature that uses compatible wired display output, before a hub can drive a monitor. The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) defines DisplayPort over USB-C as an Alt Mode that lets the connector and cable carry DisplayPort audio and video. VESA also explains that USB data and USB Power Delivery can operate at the same time when the phone, cable and dock support those modes: DisplayPort FAQ.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Look up the exact model number in the phone maker’s support documentation. Do not infer compatibility from a product title such as “USB-C hub with HDMI,” from Android branding, or from the fact that the phone charges over USB-C. A data-only hub can provide storage, keyboards or a card reader while still producing no picture.

What to verify before shopping
- Exact phone model and regional variant.
- Whether the phone supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or a documented wired-display mode.
- Whether the feature mirrors the phone screen, provides a desktop interface, or both.
- Maximum supported resolution and refresh rate for the phone’s wired output.
- Whether the operating system and the intended apps support the attached keyboard, mouse, storage or Ethernet adapter.
If the specification only says USB-C charging and data, treat video support as unconfirmed until the manufacturer says otherwise. A dock cannot add a missing video function to the phone.
Choose the accessory by what you need to do
| Your setup | Best fit | Checks before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Mirror the phone on a TV or monitor | USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable | Wired-display support on the exact phone; adapter resolution and refresh-rate support. |
| Use a display, USB accessories and charging together | Multiport USB-C dock | HDMI capability, USB data ports, PD pass-through, power reserved for the dock and phone-side video support. |
| Samsung desktop-style workflow | Compatible DeX dock or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter | Exact DeX-supported Galaxy model, wired HDMI support, charger and accessory requirements. |
| Storage, photos, Ethernet or peripherals without a display | USB-C data hub or single-purpose adapter | Phone operating-system and app support, connector data speed and power needs of each device. |
For a single monitor, a hub with several unused ports adds cost and possible power-management issues without improving the image. A dock becomes useful when you need two or more functions at once, such as HDMI plus a keyboard and charging.
Understand the ports and specifications
HDMI output
Read the HDMI specification together with the advertised resolution and refresh rate. “HDMI” alone does not tell you whether a dock can deliver 4K at 60 Hz, 4K at 30 Hz or only 1080p. The phone, dock, HDMI cable and display must all support the chosen mode; the weakest link determines the result.

Its support page also documents DisplayPort output to USB-C displays up to 4K at 60 Hz: Charge and connect with the USB-C connector on your iPhone. These figures apply to the supported iPhone models and compatible accessories described by Apple, not to every USB-C phone.
USB-A and USB-C data ports
Count the ports you will use simultaneously. USB-A is convenient for a mouse, keyboard, flash drive or card reader; a USB-C data port can be useful for newer storage and accessories. Check whether a USB-C socket is data, charging input, or both. Some docks place a USB-C data port beside a separate USB-C PD input, and a port labeled “PD” may not accept peripherals.

Advertised bus speed is not the same as guaranteed performance for every attached device. Phones may limit storage speed, and several peripherals share the dock’s upstream connection. For a camera card reader or external drive, confirm that the phone’s file manager or camera app can access the media format you intend to use.
Power Delivery pass-through
PD pass-through lets a wall charger feed the dock while the dock sends negotiated power to the phone. The number printed as the dock’s maximum input is not necessarily what reaches the phone: the dock consumes power for its own electronics and connected peripherals first.
As a concrete manufacturer example, Belkin’s Connect 5-Port USB-C Hub with Dual USB-C Ports (AVC022) lists up to 100 W total PD input, approximately 15 W used by the hub and up to 85 W available to the host. Belkin recommends a 60 W or higher USB-C charger for optimal performance with peripherals. Those are AVC022 specifications and a recommendation for that product, not a universal requirement for phone docks: Belkin AVC022 support information.
Phones generally draw less than laptops, but a high-input rating can still matter when an SSD, monitor or several USB devices are attached. Choose a charger that meets the dock maker’s recommendation and leave headroom for the dock’s own consumption.
Cables matter as much as the dock
The cable between phone and dock must carry the functions you need. A charge-only or USB 2 cable may power the phone while preventing high-speed data or a video Alt Mode connection. Apple says the cable included with an iPhone supports charging and USB 2 speeds; a compliant USB 3 cable is required for USB 3 devices. If a dock uses a detachable host cable, check its data and video capability rather than reusing an unknown cable.

For HDMI, use the HDMI cable class required by the target resolution and refresh rate. For USB-C monitors, use a full-featured USB-C cable rated for DisplayPort and the required power level. Keep the host cable short and securely seated when troubleshooting intermittent video.
How to choose a hub step by step
- Write down the exact phone model. Include the generation and, where relevant, the regional variant. “iPhone 16” and “iPhone 16e,” for example, do not have identical external-display support in Apple’s current documentation.
- Confirm wired video support. Search the manufacturer’s support page for DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB-C video output, HDMI adapter support or the vendor’s desktop-display feature. If no such statement exists, buy a data hub only until support is confirmed.
- Define the connection you will use. List the display resolution and refresh rate, then list every simultaneous accessory: keyboard, mouse, drive, Ethernet adapter, card reader and charger.
- Select the minimum port layout that covers that list. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is sufficient for display-only use. Add USB data ports and PD input only when you need them.
- Check the dock’s power path. Read how much power the dock reserves for itself and how much reaches the host. Compare the recommended charger wattage with your charger.
- Check host-cable specifications. Confirm that the included or replacement cable carries DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB data at the required speed and PD when those functions are needed together.
- Verify the display and accessory limits. Match HDMI version, resolution and refresh rate; confirm storage and peripheral support in the phone’s operating system; and check whether any monitor requires its own power supply.
- Plan the connection order. Connect the charger to the dock’s PD input, attach HDMI and USB devices, then connect the dock to the unlocked phone. If the phone does not detect the display, disconnect and reconnect the host cable after the display is powered.
iPhone USB-C hub compatibility
Apple’s current support page lists external-display support for iPhone 15 models, iPhone 16 models except iPhone 16e, iPhone 17 models except iPhone 17e, and iPhone 18 Pro models. The list is model-specific and can change, so check the current Apple documentation for your device before buying: Apple’s USB-C connection guide.
When a supported iPhone is connected to a display, Apple says the display mirrors the iPhone screen except when an app provides a second-screen experience. That is different from a desktop shell that rearranges the entire operating system. If your goal is presentation playback, a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is usually the simplest path. If you need a keyboard, mouse, storage and charging at the same time, use a dock whose HDMI and USB ports are specified for simultaneous operation.
Apple documents HDMI output up to 4K at 60 Hz with an HDMI 2.0-capable adapter or cable, and DisplayPort output up to 4K at 60 Hz to a compatible USB-C display. The adapter, cable and display must support the selected mode; connecting an unsupported iPhone model to the same accessory will not create video output.
Samsung Galaxy and DeX
Samsung’s DeX documentation says a standard USB-C-to-HDMI adapter can start DeX on compatible phones. DeX support is model-specific, and Samsung distinguishes wired DeX from wireless DeX and DeX for PC. Its support page includes exclusions, so check the exact Galaxy model and the current compatibility list rather than assuming that every Galaxy phone supports wired DeX: Use the Samsung DeX screen on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
Rank #4
- 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
For a DeX setup, confirm three separate things: the phone supports wired HDMI output, the chosen adapter or dock is recognized by DeX, and the charger can sustain the phone and attached accessories. A dock with HDMI, USB ports and PD input is useful for a keyboard, mouse and external storage, while a simple adapter is appropriate when DeX will be used only on a screen.
Samsung describes the DeX Pad and DeX Station as docking stations with HDMI and wired accessory connections. Availability and compatibility vary by model and market, so verify current support before selecting one. Wireless DeX does not prove that a phone can send video through its USB-C port; it uses a different connection path.
Using a hub without a display
If you only need a card reader, USB drive, Ethernet adapter, keyboard or mouse, video capability is unnecessary. A USB-C data hub can be the better choice, provided the phone’s operating system recognizes the accessory. Check the connector type and data speed, and consider power for devices that draw more than the phone can provide.
For photo transfer, confirm that the phone’s file-management or photo application can read the card or drive format. For Ethernet, verify that the operating system supports the adapter chipset and that the network allows a new wired interface. For a keyboard or mouse, a powered dock can prevent disconnects when other USB devices are active.
Product examples and how to interpret their claims
USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable
Apple and Samsung both document this basic connection for supported phones. It is the most direct option for a single display because it has fewer components and no hub power budget to manage. Confirm the phone’s video support and the adapter’s HDMI resolution before purchase.

Belkin Connect 5-Port USB-C Hub with Dual USB-C Ports (AVC022)
Belkin lists HDMI 2.0 up to 4K at 60 Hz, two USB-A data ports, one USB-C data port and PD 3.0 pass-through up to 100 W total input. The same listing states that approximately 15 W is used by the hub, up to 85 W is available to the host and a 60 W or higher charger is recommended for optimal performance with peripherals. Belkin lists USB-C smartphones with video-output support, including Samsung DeX-enabled devices, as compatible. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results: AVC022 specifications.
Samsung DeX Pad or DeX Station
These are purpose-built docking options for compatible Galaxy phones, with HDMI and wired accessory connections described by Samsung. They make sense only when your exact phone is on Samsung’s supported list and you specifically want the DeX workflow. Confirm current availability and compatibility before buying.
Power and monitor requirements that are easy to miss
A phone may be able to provide enough power for a mouse but not for a portable monitor and an external drive at the same time. Some mobile displays have their own stated power requirement. Plugable’s guidance for its USBC-PDMON portable monitor says the monitor can require external power when the mobile device cannot provide its stated 15 W requirement; that figure applies to that monitor setup, not to every hub or display: Plugable’s smartphone and tablet monitor guidance.
When a monitor is dim, repeatedly reconnects or never starts, connect its power supply first, then attach the dock and phone. Do not treat the phone’s charging wattage as proof that it can power every downstream device.
Troubleshooting a phone hub
No picture on the monitor
- Recheck the exact phone model’s wired-display support. If the phone lacks DisplayPort Alt Mode or a compatible vendor feature, changing hubs will not solve the problem.
- Test the phone with a known-compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter and a different HDMI cable to isolate the dock.
- Power the monitor, select the correct HDMI input and reconnect the host cable with the phone unlocked.
- Confirm that the dock’s HDMI port is an output and that the host cable is full-featured rather than charge-only.
Picture appears but flickers or drops
- Use the dock’s specified HDMI cable and a shorter, compliant host cable.
- Disconnect high-draw USB devices and test the display alone.
- Connect the recommended PD charger to the dock before reconnecting the phone.
- Reduce the display to a supported resolution or refresh rate if the phone, adapter or display has a lower limit.
USB devices disconnect
- Connect PD power and test one peripheral at a time.
- Check that the port is a data port, not a PD input.
- Use a powered reader or drive when the phone cannot supply enough bus power.
- Verify that the phone’s operating system and app support the accessory.
The phone charges slowly
- Remember that the dock consumes part of the incoming power; its maximum input is not the phone’s guaranteed charging rate.
- Use a charger meeting the dock maker’s recommendation and a cable rated for USB PD.
- Temporarily remove the monitor and USB devices to determine whether the dock is reserving power for them.
DeX does not launch
- Confirm that the exact Galaxy model supports wired DeX, not only wireless DeX or DeX for PC.
- Use a direct USB-C-to-HDMI connection to rule out a dock compatibility issue.
- Update the phone and reconnect with the display powered and the charger attached.
What to buy for common setups
- Phone to TV for video or presentations: a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, with the required HDMI specification.
- Phone, monitor, keyboard and charging: a multiport dock with HDMI, at least one suitable USB data port and PD pass-through; verify power allocation.
- Samsung desktop workflow: a DeX-compatible adapter or dock after confirming the exact Galaxy model’s wired support.
- Camera cards, storage or Ethernet only: a data-focused USB-C hub or single-purpose adapter, with operating-system and power compatibility checked first.
The decisive purchase question is not “Which USB-C hub is best?” It is “Does my exact phone send the signal and data I need, and does this accessory preserve those functions while supplying enough power?” Answer that first, then buy the simplest hub that meets the verified requirements.
