Choose a USB-C Power Delivery (USB-PD) charger that meets your laptop maker’s recommended wattage, then check your phone’s charging protocol, the cable’s power rating, and how the charger splits power across ports. USB-C describes the connector—not a guaranteed charging speed.
Start with the laptop’s recommended wattage
Find your exact laptop model’s charging guidance and recommended adapter wattage. For USB-C Mac laptops, Apple says a USB-C adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery can charge the computer; for the best charging experience, Apple recommends at least the wattage specified for that Mac. Other laptop makers may have different requirements, so check the guidance for your model rather than assuming that any USB-C charger will be suitable. Apple’s Mac charging guidance explains its recommendation.

USB Power Delivery is a negotiated power standard, while USB-C is the connector family. A USB-C charger or cable does not automatically support USB-PD or the charging mode your device uses. The USB Implementers Forum describes USB PD 3.1 as supporting up to 240W; that is a capability of the standard, not a recommended charging rate for every phone or laptop. See the USB-IF overview of USB Power Delivery.

Look up the exact phone model and its supported charging protocol before choosing a charger. Manufacturer recommendations differ even among phones from the same brand; a charger’s headline wattage alone does not establish that a phone will use its fastest charging mode.

Samsung and other phones
Do not assume one PPS charger guarantees a particular Samsung “Super Fast Charging” tier across models. The exact supported PPS mode and adapter requirement need to be checked against the manufacturer guidance for the specific phone. Apply the same model-specific check to other brands.

Match the cable to the power you need
The cable is part of the charging setup: a suitable charger cannot make an inadequately rated cable appropriate for the power being delivered. Check the cable’s stated power rating against the charger output and the connected device’s needs. USB-IF describes requirements for higher-power USB-C cables in its USB Power Delivery overview.

Buy compliant products from trusted sources and look for USB-IF certified logos on packaging, product briefs, the cable, or the device. USB-IF advises consumers to do so in its compliance announcement. A logo or listing does not replace checking the specific cable’s rating and the equipment’s condition.
For two devices, check shared output—not just the port count
Multi-port chargers can change the power available to each device when another device is connected. Check the charger’s specification for both per-port output and total output with the intended combination of devices attached. A high single-port rating does not tell you what a laptop and phone will receive simultaneously.

Use a practical compatibility checklist
- Laptop: Confirm the exact model supports USB-C charging through USB-PD and identify the maker’s recommended adapter wattage.
- Phone: Confirm its supported protocol and model-specific fast-charging guidance.
- Cable: Check that its stated power rating suits the devices and charger.
- Multiple devices: Verify each port’s output and the total shared output for the combination you plan to use.
- Equipment: Choose compliant, undamaged charger and cable products from trusted sources.
Compare chargers against these requirements instead of choosing solely by the largest wattage number or the number of ports. A charger’s capability matters only when it aligns with the device, cable, and way you intend to connect them.
Charge safely and understand what can affect speed
Inspect charger and cable labels, use equipment rated for the device’s required voltage and current, and follow the device and charger instructions. Google warns that incompatible voltage or current, or non-compliant cables and devices, can cause injury or permanent damage. Keep connectors dry and unobstructed, and stop charging if a manufacturer warning tells you to disconnect. See Google’s Pixel safety guidance.
Even with compatible equipment, charging speed can depend on the device’s state, settings, temperature, and whether the charger is sharing output. Apple notes that excessive heat or cold can prevent fast charging in its iPhone fast-charge guidance.
