For a PS5 game targeting 60 FPS, choose a display that supports 60 Hz at the resolution you want. A 120 Hz screen is optional: it matters only when a game and its selected mode can output more than 60 frames per second. Choose screen size around your viewing distance, then verify the exact HDMI input, cable path and display modes before buying.

The refresh-rate rule that decides the purchase

Frames per second (FPS) describes what the PS5 renders; hertz (Hz) describes how often the display can refresh. A 60 FPS target therefore needs a display mode that can run at 60 Hz. This is the baseline specification to check, not a particular panel type or a gaming label.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A 120 Hz display does not make a 60 FPS game render at 120 FPS by itself. It gives the console and game room to use a higher-refresh mode when that mode exists. PlayStation documentation describes PS5 output up to 120 Hz when a compatible game supports it, while Sony documents 4K/120 Hz output for compatible equipment. If the game is locked to 60 FPS, the extra refresh capacity remains unused for that game.

What to check on a specification sheet

  • Look for the refresh rate at the resolution you intend to use, not merely a maximum refresh number at a lower resolution.
  • Confirm that the listed mode applies to the HDMI input. A monitor may advertise a high refresh rate over DisplayPort while offering a different limit over HDMI.
  • Check whether 120 Hz, 4K, VRR and other features are supported simultaneously. A specification that lists each feature separately does not necessarily promise every combination.
  • Use the exact model number and regional specification sheet. Port capabilities and firmware behavior can vary between models or sizes in the same product family.

Choose the resolution before choosing the screen

Resolution affects detail, the practical screen size and the amount you pay. It is separate from frame rate: a 4K display can be used for a 60 FPS target, and a 1440p display can also be used for 60 FPS when its HDMI mode supports it.

PS5 target Display capability to verify Useful decision point
1080p at 60 FPS 1080p at 60 Hz over the chosen HDMI input Practical for a smaller desk display or a lower-cost setup where 4K detail is not a priority.
1440p at 60 FPS 1440p at 60 Hz; Sony says compatible displays need 1440p/60 Hz support at minimum for this PS5 output A middle ground for desk distance and QHD monitors. Confirm that the specific model accepts the PS5’s 1440p signal.
4K at 60 FPS 4K at 60 Hz over the selected HDMI input Suitable when you sit farther away, want higher-detail output or prefer a larger TV.
4K at up to 120 FPS in supported modes 4K/120 Hz on a compatible HDMI input, with a compatible cable and game mode A future-facing option for games that provide a higher-frame-rate mode. It is not required for a steady 60 FPS target.

How viewing distance changes the sensible size

Start with where you will sit rather than with a diagonal measurement. A desk viewer is close enough to inspect a monitor comfortably; a sofa viewer usually needs a larger image for the same visual impact. Measure the distance from your eyes to the display position, then compare candidate sizes in the room or on the desk. If you move the screen farther away, a very small panel can make menus and fine detail harder to read. If you sit close to a very large panel, you may spend more time moving your eyes around the image.

Use resolution and size together. A large 1080p image viewed closely can look less refined than a smaller, higher-resolution image at the same distance. Conversely, paying for 4K solely because the number is higher may offer little practical benefit if the display is small or far enough away that the additional detail is difficult to resolve. The right combination depends on your room, desk depth, eyesight, games and budget.

What 1440p support actually means on PS5

PS5 supports 1440p output on compatible displays. Sony’s stated minimum for that output is 1440p at 60 Hz, so do not assume that every monitor marketed as “QHD” will accept the console’s signal in every mode. Look for explicit PS5 or HDMI 1440p support in the manufacturer’s specification, and test the mode through the console’s video-output menu after installation.

TV or monitor: compare the use case, not the label

Official compatibility information establishes what PS5 signals a display can accept; it does not establish a universal winner between televisions and monitors, nor does it provide independent rankings for input latency, response time or image quality. Treat the form factor as a room-and-connection decision.

Decision axis Questions for a TV Questions for a monitor
Viewing position Will you play from a sofa or other distance that favors a larger screen? Will you sit at a desk or close viewing position?
Size Does the diagonal fit the wall, stand and seating distance? Does the panel fit the desk, stand or arm without forcing an uncomfortable distance?
Resolution Does the HDMI input accept your chosen 1080p, 1440p or 4K signal? Does the HDMI input accept the PS5’s chosen resolution, including 1440p if that is your plan?
Refresh rate Is 60 Hz available at the desired resolution, and does the model support 120 Hz if you need it? Is the advertised refresh rate available through HDMI rather than only another input?
Variable refresh Does the model support VRR over a compatible HDMI connection? Does the monitor support VRR over HDMI and list PS5 compatibility?
Automatic low-latency switching Does the TV provide ALLM, and what does its manual call the feature? Is an equivalent automatic mode present, or will you select the gaming mode manually?
Connection path Can the PS5 connect directly to the input that supports the desired signal? Can the PS5 connect directly without relying on a DisplayPort-only feature or an incompatible adapter?

When a TV is the better fit

Choose a TV when the room encourages longer-distance viewing, several people may watch, or you want a larger screen as part of the room. Verify the exact HDMI port rather than assuming every port has the same bandwidth. If you want 4K/120 Hz or HDMI 2.1 VRR, identify the port that explicitly supports those functions and use that port for the console.

  • Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
  • Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
  • New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.

When a monitor is the better fit

Choose a monitor when you will play at a desk, want a size that fits close viewing, or prefer a 1440p setup. A QHD monitor can be a sensible category for PS5 because the console supports 1440p output on compatible displays. Confirm the HDMI specification and the supported refresh rate; a monitor’s headline PC refresh rate may not describe its PS5 behavior.

Understand 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM as optional features

120 Hz

Consider 120 Hz when you play titles that offer a 120-FPS or other high-refresh mode, want the option to use those modes later, or are buying a display for both PS5 and another high-refresh source. The game and its selected graphics mode still determine the output. A 120 Hz setting cannot turn a 30 FPS or 60 FPS mode into a faster one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a display purchased only for a stable 60 FPS target, spending more for 120 Hz is a preference and upgrade path, not a requirement. Check the complete signal combination—resolution, HDR if relevant to your use, VRR and refresh rate—rather than accepting a single “120 Hz” badge as proof that the desired mode works.

Variable refresh rate (VRR)

VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh behavior with the PS5’s graphical output when both the display connection and game support it. Sony describes VRR for HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors and notes that its effects vary with the display and game. VRR is therefore useful for compatible variable-frame-rate situations, but it is not needed to show a game that consistently delivers 60 FPS at a supported 60 Hz mode.

“On HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output.”

Before paying for VRR, confirm that the feature works over the HDMI input you will use and that the manufacturer’s documentation lists the relevant PS5 behavior. A display can support VRR for one source or range of signals and not for every resolution-and-refresh combination.

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)

Sony describes ALLM as an option for compatible TVs. It lets a compatible television switch to an appropriate low-latency picture mode when the console is active, but the feature name, trigger and menu behavior are set by the manufacturer. Read the TV’s manual and settings description rather than assuming that a generic “game mode” label means ALLM is present.

Check the HDMI connection before you buy

Many failed 4K/120 or VRR setups are connection mismatches rather than console faults. Read the port map in the display’s manual and identify the input that supports your intended signal. Some displays reserve their highest-bandwidth features for one or a subset of HDMI inputs.

  • Confirm the port’s supported resolution and refresh combination, such as 4K at 120 Hz, rather than checking only the number of HDMI ports.
  • Confirm whether VRR is supported on that same port and at the resolution you plan to use.
  • Check whether a soundbar, receiver, switch or capture device sits between the PS5 and display. Each device must pass the complete signal; a direct connection is the cleanest first test.
  • Use the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5 as the starting point. Sony also describes an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable as a general option for compatible high-bandwidth signals; replacing the cable is not the first step when the included cable and direct path work.

Set up the PS5 and verify the chosen mode

  1. Write down the target. Decide whether you want 1080p, 1440p or 4K, and whether 60 Hz is sufficient or 120 Hz is an intended option. This prevents you from troubleshooting a mode you never needed.
  2. Connect directly. Plug the PS5 into the display input identified in the display manual. Leave switches, receivers and adapters out of the first test.
  3. Use the supplied cable first. The included PS5 cable is Sony’s recommended starting point. Move to an appropriately rated Ultra High Speed HDMI cable only if the desired signal still fails after the port, settings and firmware are checked.
  4. Open the console’s video settings. On PS5, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the resolution, 120 Hz Output, VRR and ALLM options that the console exposes for the connected display.
  5. Test 1440p when applicable. In the same video-output area, use the PS5’s 1440p output test if you bought a QHD monitor or TV. A successful test confirms that the console and display negotiated the mode; it does not guarantee that every game uses 1440p.
  6. Check the game’s mode. A display can be ready for 120 Hz while the running title remains in a 60-FPS quality mode. Select the game’s higher-frame-rate option only when that title provides one and you prefer its trade-offs.
  7. Confirm the result on the display. Use the TV or monitor’s information panel, if available, to see the incoming resolution and refresh rate. Do not rely solely on the product box or the console’s maximum setting.

Troubleshoot a missing 4K/120 signal

1. Confirm that the game and mode support 120 Hz

PS5 can output up to 120 Hz when the connected display and game mode support it. If the title only offers a 60-FPS mode, the display will not receive a 120-FPS signal even though it is capable of 120 Hz.

  • Package Contents: DisplayPort cable, L-shaped Screwdriver, Power cord, Power adapter, Quick start guide, Warranty Card

2. Move to the correct HDMI input

Check the labels and manual for the port that supports the required bandwidth. Test the PS5 directly on that input. If the display has multiple HDMI ports, do not assume they are interchangeable.

3. Remove intermediate equipment

Temporarily bypass a receiver, soundbar, switch, splitter or capture device. If the signal works with a direct connection, the intermediate device or its configuration is limiting the negotiated mode.

4. Check the cable without making it the default culprit

Reseat both ends of the supplied cable and test again. If the desired high-bandwidth mode still does not appear, use a properly rated Ultra High Speed HDMI cable as Sony advises for compatible signals. A new cable cannot compensate for an HDMI input that lacks the required capability.

5. Update firmware and review output settings

Install available display firmware and check the PS5’s video-output settings again. Set the console to a mode the display explicitly supports, then test 4K, 120 Hz and VRR one at a time so that a failed negotiation has a clear cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Check VRR separately

If 4K/120 works but VRR does not, verify that the display supports VRR over HDMI at that signal and that the game is compatible. Sony notes that VRR effects vary by display and game, so a working 4K/120 connection does not prove that every VRR behavior will match.

Practical buying paths

Desk setup focused on 60 FPS

Prioritize a comfortable close-viewing size, 1440p or 1080p according to your preference, and an HDMI input that explicitly supports 60 Hz at that resolution. A 1440p monitor is a logical category to investigate when you want more detail than 1080p without selecting a large living-room TV. Treat 120 Hz and VRR as optional additions.

Living-room setup focused on 4K/60

Prioritize viewing distance, a size that remains comfortable from the seating position, and 4K at 60 Hz on the HDMI input used by the PS5. If you do not play games with higher-refresh modes, do not let a 120 Hz label outweigh basic fit, port support and picture settings you actually use.

One display for 60 FPS now and 120 Hz later

Choose a model whose specification explicitly combines the resolution and refresh rate you may want, such as 4K/120 Hz, on a compatible HDMI input. Confirm the cable path and firmware support. This path costs more only when the complete mode is useful to you; the presence of a 120 Hz panel alone is not a performance guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixed PS5 and PC use

List the required modes for each source before shopping. A monitor may advertise a very high PC refresh rate through DisplayPort while the PS5 uses HDMI at a lower limit. Verify every source separately and count the number of HDMI inputs you need for consoles, audio equipment and other devices.

Marketing claims that need closer inspection

  • “120 Hz” without a signal table: Find the supported HDMI resolution-and-refresh combinations. The panel’s maximum may apply only to another input or lower resolution.
  • “PS5 compatible” without a mode list: Ask which resolutions, refresh rates and VRR ranges are supported. Compatibility is more useful when the exact mode is stated.
  • “Gaming monitor” as a substitute for testing: The category name does not establish a universal latency, response-time or image-quality ranking.
  • “HDMI 2.1” as a complete answer: Confirm the port’s actual bandwidth and whether 4K/120 and VRR work together on that model.
  • “Game mode” as proof of ALLM: Game mode can be a manual picture preset. Check whether the TV specifically supports Auto Low Latency Mode and how it behaves.

A final pre-purchase checklist

  • My target game mode is 60 FPS, and the display supports 60 Hz at my chosen resolution.
  • I selected the resolution and screen size for my actual viewing distance.
  • If I want 1440p, the model explicitly accepts 1440p/60 Hz from PS5.
  • If I want 4K/120, the exact HDMI input supports 4K/120, not merely 4K or 120 Hz separately.
  • I know whether VRR is available over that input and understand that game support affects its result.
  • I checked the TV’s ALLM documentation instead of assuming that a gaming preset provides it.
  • I can connect the PS5 directly and have identified the supplied cable as my first test cable.
  • I have checked the model-level manual for firmware, port and regional differences.

The best display for 60 FPS PS5 gaming is the one that supports your selected resolution at 60 Hz, fits the distance and size of your room or desk, and accepts that signal through the HDMI path you will actually use. Add 120 Hz, VRR or ALLM when a compatible game and setup make those features worth paying for.
